2024 Darley Pre-Season Preview

With pre-season preparations well under way and Round 1 quickly approaching, Scoop has gone one-on-one with all 11 senior football coaches ahead of the 2024 McDonalds BFNL season.

COACH:Dan Jordan

Previous Experience/Accolades: Former Essendon AFL Assistant Coach (Essendon 2020-21), BFNL Hall of Fame Member, Darley 2023 BFNL Premiership Coach

ON THE RECORD

SCOOP: Firstly Dan, congratulations on your flag success just two years in with the Devils. To win virtually out of a pigeon shed with home ground renovations going on suggests the group is pretty tight and able to maintain focus (won last 10 games on the trot). Rate the nature of the group given your 20+ years in footy...

DAN JORDAN: Regarding facilities - It’s what you make of it, the 'home' is essentially the group and the people within it, we think we're well led and endeavouring to be well connected. We try to focus more on the 'what haves' than the 'have nots' and allow people to feel comfortable being themselves. We think they're the key ingredients to being a good club, not the physical facilities.

SCOOP: You said dealing with expectation after two finals in 2022 would ask questions of your relatively young group. Surely defending a flag comes with its own level of raised expectation. How as a coach do you go about restoring motivation and the need to improve?

DJ: Expectations are more often external. We welcome the challenge being the hunted and are keen to stand up. The group enjoyed the successes of last year but are well aware of the work that is required to achieve. We'll need a bit of luck with injuries etc along the way and are hopeful being in the mix for a top three finish.

SCOOP: You'll have to get it done this year primarily without Mace Cousins (Geelong VFL), ruckman Lucas Impey (Western Jets) and experienced multiple premiership winning trio Shane Page, Darren Leonard and Jacob Zeestraaten. Page is the big out given he's barely 30. Soldier out, soldier in doesn't fit the Page solution. Has he simply had enough?

DJ: Teams are always evolving - it's very rare you have the same side from one year into the next. I'm excited for the opportunity that has opened up for a few of our youngsters. On (Shane) Page, he's reached a time in his footy where he thinks he's got nothing left to give. We'd love to have him around the club in some fashion.

SCOOP: There's no ceiling on what impact a fit and healthy Brady Wright (6'4') can deliver for the group. Where does he fit into the mould given he's a 'rare' tall among your best 22?

DJ: We're hoping Brady can play a Darren Leonard type role for us but we won't be rushing him given he's coming off a significant injury. While a slow integration is more likely we're excited about Brady's prospects. He's added more size and strength and we know he can certainly play.

SCOOP: You've had a relatively quiet off-season in the marketplace. Has that been by design, or has it been difficult to find the piece(s) you're after?

DJ: Bit of both. Our priority was re-signing all of our (available) players from last year’s grand final so the focus will be on improvement within.

IDENTIFIED STRENGTHS

DJ: Flexibility, adaptability, connection, pride, avenues to goal.

PROJECTED IMPROVEMENT

DJ: Young guys challenging selection - finals are often won on the back of 'bottom six' contributions.

Progression of our mid-tier players impacting games. Top end is sound.

MOST UNDER AND OVERRATED STAT IN TODAY'S BFNL FOOTY

Goalkicking accuracy – Underrated, Clearances – Overrated, the 'nature of' is more important.

PRE-SEASON TRAINING

DJ: Came back late due to Grand Final appearance. We'll ramp it up pretty quick - the players are familiar with what is required. In 2022 we worked on building fitness, 2023 teaching and now 2024 will endeavour tinkering with the plan for improvement.

PLAYER INS

Mikey Edwards (Banyule), likely more to come.

PLAYER OUTS

Darren Leonard (Retired), Shane Page (Retired), Jacob Zeestraaten (Retired), Blake Colley (Ballan), Trae Van Leith (Ballan), Billy Sullivan (Melton).

VFL AFFILIATED PLAYERS

Mace Cousins (Geelong), Bailey Young (Footscray), Lucas Impey (Williamstown), Joel Cadman (Port Melbourne training), Mitch Ward (Port Melbourne training), Will Johnson (Geelong training), Adam Azzopardi (Geelong training)

THE DRAW

SCOOP: It is a tougher H&A assignment in store for the reigning premiers. Get 4/5 remaining finalists from last year twice - Melton, North Ballarat, Sebastopol and East Point - also likely improvers Sunbury and Bacchus Marsh. A season of two halves really for Dan Jordan's men with just two games (Melton South and Lake Wendouree) in five weeks through the middle stages of the season from June 2nd to July 12th. Expect a testing season ahead for the new benchmark premiers who remain unbeaten in their previous 10 BFNL games. The Devils would be happy with a top three finish ahead of finals.

PRACTICE MATCH SCHEDULE

March 23 v Rowville (H)

April 6 v Lara (A)

IMPROVERS TIP (OUTSIDE OF DARLEY)

DJ: East Point and Ballarat

FLAG TIP (OUTSIDE OF DARLEY)

DJ: North Ballarat - more improvement to come.

Matthew Brett:Travis Minns, pre covid. He maintained contact through 2020, built rapport and the rest is history.

INSIDER: What is your actual role at the club Matty?

MB:Assistant Coach - Backs

INSIDER: It was great news for Devils’ fans to hear you were sticking around after a winless 2021 - the club must be growing on you?

MB:The importance of building connection / relationships with people.

Bewley Lands Henderson Double

Darley star playmaker Brett Bewley made it back-to-back Henderson Medals on Monday night with a four vote win over close teammate, Luther Baker.

The 28 year old polled in ten of his 15 games to finish on 27 votes, two shy of his 29 vote winning haul in 2022.

The former Darley junior and Fremantle Docker took the lead after round 14 to hold off Baker, who polled in 10 of his 13 games.

Baker’s profound influence (competition rank #3 for centre clearance average) was highlighted by the fact the Devils' two home and away losses came during a period of absence from the 29-year-old as he nursed a hamstring strain.

But all honours are with Bewley, what an impact the humble role model has had since his return to the Devils in 2022.

The damaging left footer recorded a staggering eight best on grounds to win graciously in front of an approving stacked room at Melton’s TabCorp Park.

Bewley averaged a tick over 38 disposals a game to attract the eye and attention of umpires and record a historic win on a significant night for the Devils
ahead of their biggest day of the season on Saturday at City Oval.

Success on Grand Final day was seemingly all on Bewley’s mind upon receiving his second Henderson Medal.

After acknowledging his immediate family and influencers the focus shifted to Saturday’s decider against North Ballarat.

“We’re really looking forward to Saturday, let’s hope we can add another medal,” Bewley said.

North Ballarat midfielder Riley Polkinghorne, who averaged 30 disposals per game in 2023, finished the count in third place on 19 votes.

2023 Henderson Medal Top 10 Leaderboard
1st Brett Bewley (Darley) - 27 votes
2nd Luther Baker (Darley) - 23 votes
3rd Riley Polkinghorne (North Ballarat) - 19 votes
=4th Matthew Johnston (East Point), Bailey Medwell (Sebastopol) - 18 votes
=6th Jack Walker (Melton), Izaac Grant (Redan), Josh Guthrie (Sunbury) - 14 votes

Bewley Wins Hendo in Fine Style

Scoop was watching it all unfold as the 2022 Henderson & McLean Medal counts took place at North Ballarat Sports Club last night.

Darley Captain and star midfielder Brett Bewley has capped off a memorable return to the club where it all began with a stunning win in last night's Henderson Medal count held at the North Ballarat Social Club.

Bewley polled in 13 of 16 home and away games to finish on 29 votes, 13 clear of nearest rivals Jack Walker (Melton), Jordy Johnston (East Point) and Lachie George (Redan) who tied for second.

The former Fremantle Docker was considered the top pick to win the time-honoured event by many across the competition and didn't let the 'judges' down, recording seven best-on-ground performances on his way to a deserving runaway result. Bewley put the Medal beyond doubt having led by 10 votes with three rounds still remaining

Bewley thanked his partner Sarah, immediate family, the wider club and the playing group before acknowledging the influence of new coach Dan Jordan.

"DJ helped me fall in love with the game again by allowing me the license to play freely, more the way I want to play," said Bewley upon receiving his Medal.

BFNL Chairman, Adrian Bettio (left) and awards MC, Wes Cusworth (right) toast the 2022 Henderson Medallist Brett Bewley and 2022 McLean Medallist Soli Ropati.

The 27-year-old said the decision to return to Darley after his delisting from Fremantle (AFL) in 2021 was made easier with a young family and with the Devils seemingly struggling without a win in 2021.

"I felt like I could bring something, at least give back to the club," Bewley said.

"(Nick Rodda) Rodd's and I are pretty good mates so I was able to help get him to come across," he added.

"And once DJ had signed it was all pretty smooth sailing from there on, and that helped seal the deal."

The former Essendon Assistant Coach has already signed on for season 2023.

Bewley attributed his individual success largely to his impeccable preparation.

Fellow teammates have been quoted saying Bewley prepares like no other - "super impressive".

Williamstown recruit Nick Rodda shared the Tony Lockett Medal honours in his debut season with the club finishing on 56 goals.
