2024 East Point Pre-Season Preview

With pre-season preparations well under way and Round 1 quickly approaching, Scoop has gone one-on-one with all 11 senior football coaches ahead of the 2024 McDonalds BFNL season.

COACH:Joe Carmody

PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE/ACCOLADES:Ballarat FNC Senior Coach

ON THE RECORD

SCOOP: Hey Joe - welcome back to the BFNL coaching ranks - how was the year off personally and how did you end up at the Kangas?

JOE CARMODY: Good break. Burnt out after stint at Ballarat. Unfortunately ousted in the 2022 Prelim. While I enjoyed a breather the want to coach (again) was always there. When Jackson Merrett indicated he wasn't going around again (as coach) I was approached by the club. I'm familiar with most of the group too having taught (school) or coached against them - they're a good bunch of blokes. Exciting times ahead.

SCOOP: The Kangas finished off the season well with a couple of finals wins - where do you think the boys are at?

JC: Difficult to gauge given we finished 6th. We look forward to working with our young players - fully aware that will have its ups and downs - but we're up for the challenge and fast tracking their progress.

SCOOP: The club must be rapt with a strong bodied mid like Mikitja Rottumah-Onus returning to the club. Players like him are hard to find...

JC: Fittest I’ve seen him despite an interrupted pre-season (appendix). He's an inside bull who can extract the ball - adds depth to our midfield - and will ask questions of opposition defence in one-on-one situations forward if and when required forward.

SCOOP: With Alex Molan back from the Rebels full time, your midfield stocks are on the rise. Just curious, are you in the Jordy Johnston predominately forward or mid camp? Nice problem to have..

JC: There will definitely be midfield time for Jordy but one-on-ones forward would be the ideal. Molan and Rottumah-Onus will add to our midfield options allowing JJ to spend more time forward. He's a very dangerous player.

SCOOP: Young forward Strahan Robinson rose to prominence in the second half of last year - how's he travelling?

JC: Training at GWV Rebels, and made the list. We're excited for him and welcome his return subject to availability.

IDENTIFIED STRENGTHS

JC: Running capacity - our time trials have been impressive and will aid us in transition. Our young guys are strong and can hold their ground over the ball - are very coachable and keen.

PROJECTED IMPROVEMENT

JC: Team defence. 18 man buy-in. Our ambition is to be a front half team conceding lower scores. We'll be working hard to instill the importance of that 'team' buy-in.

MOST UNDER AND OVERRRATED STAT IN TODAY'S BFNL FOOTY

JC: Marks inside 50 – Underrated, Clearances - Overrated (Post clearance possession more important)

PRE-SEASON TRAINING

JC: Started mid-November. Young guys have put their hands up on the track. Returned Jan 29. Healthy numbers (40 odd) pre-Christmas.

PLAYER INS

Mikitja Rottumah-Onus (Southern Mallee Tigers), Jesse Cairns (return o/s), Billy Jones (return o/s), Matt Rommeril (Skipton).

PLAYER OUTS

Jake Toulmin (Geelong District), Brad Whittaker (Coaching Dunnstown), Mitch Walsh (Skipton).

VFL AFFILIATED PLAYERS

THE DRAW

SCOOP: It’s an even draw for the Kangas ranked 5/11 easiest. They cop Darley, North Ballarat and Sebastopol from last year’s finals twice and a one-off meeting with Melton away. East were the surprise packet of last year’s finals series reaching the preliminary final after almost missing out on September action altogether. A finals berth again in an even comp would be a tick for Carmody in his first season in charge.

PRACTICE MATCH SCHEDULE

March 16 v Drysdale (H)

March 23 v Strathfieldsaye (H)

IMPROVERS TIP (OUTSIDE OF EAST POINT)

JC: Bacchus Marsh

FLAG TIP: (OUTSIDE OF EAST POINT)

JC: Darley

INSIDER: Browny, welcome to 'At the Bar' - the boys tell me you're no stranger 'in the bar', would that be fair or is that an old school stitch up?

    Making the 2024 Grand Final

INSIDER: How good, a spot in the grand final! Gee you've earned it - you're about to head into a seventh game in a row against top six opposition let alone Melton. Is there anything left in the tank?

JOE CARMODY: The boys have shown so much character to make it - we'll recharge give it a good crack!

INSIDER: Rewarding Monday night for the club and you personally winning the 2024 BFNL Coach of the Year - firstly share your initial feelings upon receiving the award and secondly describe Henderson Medal winner Matty Johnston and third place Mickitja Rotumah-Onus.

JC: Firstly, it was a great night for the club and the support, players, very uniting for the group. An award for the whole club really. Secondly, MJ - one of the most courageous I’ve come across in footy and MRO - superstar on and off the field.

INSIDER: Are there any similarities between the Ballarat side you led to a preliminary final in 2022 and this current group you have at East Point?

JC: Similar quality characters - pleasure to coach.

INSIDER: East Point improved from 7th in defence (2023 - 75pts AGST avg) and 5th in offence (2023 - 93pts FOR avg) to 2nd in both areas (51 pts AGST avg, 108pts FOR avg) behind Melton. Scoring has never been a problem at East but was a team defence a primary focus of the club post your appointment?

JC: Yes we identified that and spent lot of time working without the footy.

INSIDER: Scoreboard aside, what's the one stat you'd like to win on Saturday?

JC: Contested ball

INSIDER: What is your #1 non-negotiable asked of the players each week?

JC: Play your role

INSIDER: Playing group aside, is there another battle going on on-field between coaches - are some harder to play against than others - do some work out your theories better than others where you need to adapt on the run?

JC: Each coach brings something different. Quality depth in stocks make it a challenging role from week to week.

INSIDER: Who is your harshest critic?

JC: My kids!

INSIDER: Favorite BFNL ground away from Eastern Oval?

JC: City Oval

INSIDER: What other sport could you coach at a high level if there were no footy?

JC: Cricket

INSIDER: In a freakish sense, which player at the club can do things on-field that others can't?

JC: Jordy Johnston

INSIDER: Who at the club has the most upside from a junior perspective?

JC: Alex Molan

INSIDER: Who is the most fundamentally skilled player at the club?

JC: Jackson Merrett

INSIDER: Who is your favorite footy person at the club?

JC: Todd Sporton

INSIDER: Are you a footy head - how do you consume your footy each week?

JC: 10/10 - all platforms covered (local and AFL)

INSIDER: If you had to cook for the whole club what would be your signature dish of approval?

JC: Toast

INSIDER: Invite 5 people whoever you like to sit at the dinner table with you…

JC: My wife Amy, Jacob Brown, Harry Sheezel, Todd Sporton, Marcus Bontempelli

INSIDER: Who at the club would most likely win a million dollars on a quiz show?

JC: Matty Johnston!

INSIDER: Who at the club thinks they're funnier than they really are?

JC: Kane Irvin

INSIDER: Name a player that has any unusual, weird superstitions ahead of game time...

JC: Tom Conlan, always late! He calls it 'superstition'!

INSIDER: Favorite AFL club and player?

JC: North Melbourne, Harry Sheezel

INSIDER: If you could add three players from other BFNL clubs to your list, who would you pick?

JC: Brett Bewley (Darley), Braedan Kight (Melton), Riley Polkinghorne (North Ballarat).
