Round 13 saw the emergence of a genuine threat to flag favourites Melton, as North Ballarat sent the Bloods home with considerably more to think about moving forward. The windy, wintery conditions across the region saw the lowest goal count of any round this year. In the wash-up, the top six remained the same with Bacchus Marsh knocking on the door in seventh place with their percentage keeping them outside. 

Melton's unbeaten run in 2022 came to an end at the weekend, going down to North Ballarat by 34 points. Ironically, the last team to beat the Bloods was North Ballarat back in Round 8 of 2021 at Mars Stadium. While many didn't see the upset coming, North Ballarat coach Brendan McCartney gave us fair warning. In fact, McCartney identified the resemblance of some positive habits as far back as Round 6 when his boys failed dismally against the Bloods at their first meet by 68 points. The former Western Bulldogs coach has never looked too far ahead, rather a firm believer in the season having 'a long way to go'.

The hard-working, sleeves-up performance of his boys at the weekend offers hope and optimism to not only North Ballarat but rival clubs as well. The blueprint to defeating Melton lies in the replay for all to see – but is easier said than done. For Aaron Tymms and his boys was it that loss you had to have? Or does the nature of the loss give reason to be concerned now that clubs know Melton are beatable? Great result for the competition, we have a cracking climax to the season to look forward to.

Since Tymms' appointment as Head Coach of the Bloods in the 2018 season, Melton are 0-3 at Mars Stadium - the home of this year's McDonald’s Ballarat FNL Grand Final.

A blend of North Ballarat youth and experience led the charge with Jamie Quick (3 goals - BOG), Sam Artz and Tim Speirs named in the best. For the Bloods, Blake Souter continued his stellar season to feature along with Jordan Kight and Liam Carter. It was the Bloods' lowest score since Round 10, 2019 (3.6-24 v Ballarat)

What the coaches said:

Brendan McCartney (North Ballarat):Tough conditions with many long contests. Our boys were fantastic in the contest and played for each other. We are working hard and making good progress.

Aaron Tymms (Melton):North’s pressure was elite; they hunted the footy and the man with intent. The third quarter was the big one for them when they just 'blew us out of the water'. We will learn plenty and will be better for it. Well deserved win.

Darley recorded its seventh win of the season under new coach Dan Jordan to cling to the sixth position on the ladder with a 12-point win over Sunbury. The Lions' 2-9 record did not affect the Devils' mindset heading in and were under no illusions - this was a 'danger game' by definition. And they weren't wrong. To label the conditions 'testing' would be an understatement - just simple execution of the basic fundamentals was held at a premium. And it was the Lions who adjusted best in the opening half, their run and carry especially by hand denied the Devils a game on their terms.

Lions' quintet Harry Minton-Connell (two goals), Haydn Ross, Josh Guthrie, Harry Power and Daniel Toman combined on numerous occasions through the middle of the ground, exposing the Devils' two-way run on the back of turnovers. Tyson Lever, Patrick Scanlon and Jack Hannett provided plenty of drive off half back for the Lions on a tough day for Sunbury's forwards. After halftime and a pointed message from Jordan, the Devils settled with the breeze to arrest a nine-point deficit with three goals in the opening 10 minutes. Despite most of the quarter played in the Devils' half of the ground, they could manage just 3.9 for the term despite the clear weight of possession.

A test of character and belief awaited the Devils heading into the breeze for the final stanza. While the Lions pressed and had their moments, the Devils collective simply found a way to hold on. Defender Mitch Ward kicked the sealer against the run of play 27 minutes in to break the Lions' hearts. While both sides struggled to hit the scoreboard on the goal front, it would be Sunbury left lamenting a wasteful 1.6 final term.

Darley's VFL affiliates Billy Myers and Dylan Landt were a class above on a tough day at any level and were part of a support crew a dozen strong that ensured Jordan's Devils got over the line.

What the coaches said:

Travis Hodgson (Sunbury):Super first quarter into the breeze. We challenged the opposition with our run and carry. (We) failed to use the scoring end in the second quarter and that was the beginning of the end. Credit to Darley, they know how to win, an element of footy we're clearly still trying to learn.

Dan Jordan (Darley):A hard fought win in trying conditions with great spirit and discipline shown.

The Cobras led from go-to-woe to secure the Premiership points with a win over the Panthers at Melton Rec Reserve.

Again, in tough conditions, the state of play wasn't pretty to the eye. Both sides struggled to gain any impetus on the scoreboard, locked on four goals apiece at three-quarter time. But it was the Cobras who broke the shackles to open up in the final term adding four goals to one. Cobras forward Aaron Willetts (5 goals) was the star on the day and arguably the difference. According to Panthers coach Heath Pritchard, his boys were disappointed with their performance. The game held greater expectations for their club and a fourth win of the season. The Panthers' home record extends to 0-7 for the year.

The Cobras would be delighted with a seventh win, remaining just outside the top six on percentage. Jack Williams, Tom German and Nick Stuhldreier overwhelmed the Panthers winning plenty of their own ball while youngster Joshua Huxtable continues to progress.

Experienced Panthers trio Billy Lloyd, Dylan Jones and Matthew Notman featured prominently for the home side while Cody Chapman continues to thrive in his most consistent year yet. Dylan Conway returned for the Navy Blue and White while concerns on Cobras ruckman Daniel Burton's (foot) prognosis gains momentum (missed last 3 weeks).

What the coaches said:

Heath Pritchard (Melton South):We were disappointing today. (We) really just didn't get our game going at all and we know we can perform much better than what we did today. The good thing about footy is you get the opportunity to show improvement the next week.

Tom German (Bacchus Marsh):We played a good four quarters without the scoreboard results for the first three (quarters). We were able to break the game open in the fourth (quarter). We had a really good spread of contributors across the ground from our younger guys to our elder statesman.

Sebastopol answered the challenge put to them mid-week with a match-winning opening term. It was enough to stave off a late charge from league heavyweights East Point. Once again the wind played a significant role as the 'Burras took full advantage of it in the first term, outscoring the Kangas 38-2. The reigning dual Premiers' response with the breeze was that of inaccuracy at goal (2.8), as they trailed by 28 points to finish the half. While the Kangas went on to outscore the 'Burras five goals to two in the second half, the damage was already done. The Kangas finished eight points shy at the final siren despite superior shots on goal numbers. 25 to 18 tells the story.

It took the 'Burras big guns to make it 2-0 over the Kangas in 2022. Tony Lockyer, James Keeble (two goals), Matt Austin and Lachie Cassidy featured as the better players as did Luke Kiel (three goals) who returned for his first game since Round 1. The 'Burras also had a stroke of luck with a goal from Hugo Papst who had gone to match up the Kangas' spare in defence, Jordy Johnston. Despite conceding the goal, Jordy along with his brother Matty led the Kangas' comeback and were ably supported by Joel Van Meel, Mickitja Rotumah-Onus and young duo Charlie Molan and Liam Howard.

Both sides face tough assignments again this week, with the 'Burras heading down the highway for a meeting with Bacchus Marsh. East Point host new giant killers North Ballarat at Eastern Oval.

What the coaches said:

Michael Searl (Sebastopol):(I was) really pleased with our first half. Our ability to take our chances in front of goal set up the win. We restricted their efficiency and forced many of their shots wide or under pressure. They outworked us in the second half, but we dug in and had enough contributors across the ground to hold on. 

Jake Bridges (East Point):Lapses (in judgement) continue to challenge us. Our grind and effort continue as a strength. The toughness of Mark Sculley holding himself upright to be there for the team is reminder of how united our club is. With a disappointing result comes a greater hunger to be better.

The Swans kicked the highest score of the round in difficult conditions, holding off Redan by 15 points at Alfredton Oval. Their efforts were made easier by an upbeat start that saw the Swans minus Josh Gibson (hamstring) and Nick Weightman (concussion) in front by 15 points at quarter time and later, by 16 at the half.

Swans midfielders Will Liston and Sam James enjoy their best run of form for the season to feature again, while youngster Angus Bade made it back-to-back weeks amid voting contention. Four Swans players recorded multiple goals, namely Andrew Hooper, Jack Dunne, Paddy Simpson and Rhys Perry, all finished with two majors. More was asked of Swans ruckman Marcus Powling in his second game back from a hamstring. The Swans raised Powling's game time from 70% to near 90%. Coach Joe Carmody was very pleased with his game.

For Redan their 4-8 win/loss record is beginning to 'red-line' as potential Finals hopes, slip away. While they were beaten once again in a game, they would have fancied their chances, some merit can be given to their final quarter response. Reducing a 29-point deficit to 15 at the game's end. The Lions' best is very good, two of their four wins have come over North Ballarat and Sebastopol. Any resemblance of that form on the road this week against Darley would see them with a good chance of claiming their third scalp above them for the year.

While the Lions were buoyed with the inclusion of Cooper Craig-Peters, too much was asked of a young group to take down the Swans. The Atchison brothers Cooper and Flynn were named best along with Craig-Peters, Daniel Bond, and experienced forward Grant Bell (two goals). Lions’ barometer duo Izaac Grant and Lachie George also finished with two.

What the coaches said:

Joe Carmody (Ballarat):Very difficult conditions but we were able to score against the breeze in the second quarter with limited inside 50s which gave us a break, we held (them) for the rest of the game.

Jarrett Giampaolo (Redan);Very challenging day for both sides with the conditions. (There was) probably a 4-5 goal breeze to one end. We weren't able to capitalise on that in the second quarter, while the Swans made good use of their opportunity in the third. The boys battled all the way to the end to get close enough, but the Swans were just too good in a close one.

Round 14 Football Preview with 'Scoop'

Things are still a tug of war in the current ladder of McDonald's Ballarat FNL Senior Men's comp. The top six are still uncertain with five weeks left. Round 14 could be the turning point, so let's take a look at what could be a taste of things to come.

Devils coach Dan Jordan will need to extract every ounce of effort and buy-in from his young group if they're to avoid a loss at home to Redan. Despite the emphatic nature of the Devils' win at their earlier meeting, injury and unavailability of key Darley players suggest the Lions are in this game up to their eyeballs - if they weren't already. Billy Myers (VFL return), Dylan Landt (wedding), Shane Page (overseas), Leigh Spiteri (hamstring) and Bailey Wright (Rebels) will all be missing from the Devils' hard-fought 12-point win over Sunbury last week.

The Devils' 7-5 season win/loss record (6th) over the Lions' 4-8 (8th) doesn't truly reflect the nature of favouritism. The Lions’ best is very good with wins over top six teams North Ballarat and Sebastopol, as well as narrow defeats to Melton (10 pts) and Ballarat (6 pts & 15 pts) along the way. The Devils’ only win against top six opposition came against Sebastopol (6pts) in Round 1.

In fairness, Redan may have to get this road trip assignment done without Cooper Craig-Peters (likely VFL return) and Liam Hoy (doubtful - hamstring) who is nearing three weeks on the sidelines. But the Lions should not fear the highway with wins over Sunbury and Melton South already this year.

The returns on the goal front of both sides are expected to yield the greatest interest externally as leading Devils forward Nick Rodda (44 goals) attempts to counteract the damage of Lions' sharpshooters Izaac Grant (27), Lachie George (20) and Grant Bell (15) at the other end who make up 52% of all Redan's goals. Internally, however, I expect the focus to be on clearance and contested ball. Redan has a history of being good around stoppage - expect Lachie George and Daniel Bond to shoulder the load against in-form Devils combo Brett Bewley and Luther Baker. In summary, very much a dangerous game for Darley, and the last roll of the dice for Redan.   

The battle between the Cobras and the ‘Burras verges on Match of the Round billing given the winner will find themselves a game clear inside the top six. It's hard to fathom that these two sides met just four weeks ago when the Cobras kicked away early to a 26-point quarter-time lead before steadying late for a thoroughly deserved 22-point win on the road.

I know the venue favours Bacchus Marsh ahead of the return bout, but there are a few notable list changes - two ‘big ins’ and one 'big out' - that could swing the pendulum the visitors’ way. ‘Burras' utility Luke Kiel (3 goals) made a safe return last week and is likely to back up his performance while reigning Henderson Medallist and 'Burras gun midfielder Lachie Cassidy looks back on track after his promising return in Round 11. The Cobras are expected to be without dominant ruckman Daniel Burton (foot) - his season rests on tenterhooks.

What has impressed across the wider McDonald’s Ballarat FNL is the ability of these two sides to bring the heat and the urgency to the contest. Expect this game to be on from the opening bounce, both teams love the ball in tight. I can guarantee you the Cobras will be up for the scrap… 'Burras heed the warning.

Even Melton coach Aaran Tymms commented on the heat brought by these two sides, albeit for a half. Maybe the team that can sustain the pressure the longest will own the Premiership points come 5pm. The rebound off half back from Cobras duo Jake Owen and Jack Williams versus Tony Lockyer and Riley O'Keefe for Sebas, and how that can amount to scores for each side, will go a long way towards defining the outcome. That quartet lead an impressive list of talent primed for a classic blue-collar in and under square-off.

There's plenty at stake for the winner here, let's hope it can deliver on the promise.

Panthers coach Heath Pritchard would be the first to concede that copping Melton at Maccy Park on the back of their only defeat so far in 2022 will be a tough ask.

If there's any consolation for Pritchard’s boys, they are one of only two teams to score 18 points or more against the Bloods in first quarters this year. In fact, so dominant have the Bloods been, they're currently 11-1 for first and third quarters. Their only losses for the two terms came last week in the Bloods' 34-point loss to North Ballarat.

Given the Bloods’ numbers for second and fourth quarter wins (7-5) are modest (comparatively) the message is clear: Melton strips teams of their will in opening quarters, outscoring opposition sides 307/113 (+194) before reasserting their authority in the third 392/135 (+257). Seven teams have been kept to one goal or less in first quarters by Melton in their 12 games. It's a bit to digest I know, so what to make of it all?

Melton South must start well to be any chance - go all in early and reassess at quarter time. A no-show opener would spell trouble for the Panthers as the Bloods aim to apply last week's learnings. Tymms told "The Presser” that he has 13 players in the Reserves who have played under him at senior level. Naturally, in the aftermath of a loss, competition for selection heightens. Some listed Seniors will feel like they're playing for their spots and Pritchard’s Panthers will ensure they earn it.

It's a throw at the stumps game for Melton South that presents another growth opportunity. For Melton, no extra motivation is required here - the nature of a local derby will be enough to reaffirm the number one standing on the McDonald’s Ballarat Senior Men’s ladder with an all-around performance.

Something tells me Brendan McCartney and his team took a liking to 'the hunters' tag last week with their surprise win over Melton. Hope you enjoyed it, that will be the last we hear of that term for a while…

North Ballarat has deservedly regained 'hunted' status, as the challenge looms for Jake Bridges' East Point. Macca has an eye for football, he sees far more than just the score. Despite North Ballarat's Round 6, 68-point shellacking at the hands of Melton, McCartney was encouraged by what he saw. Surely not?... Surely!  

Since their bye in Round 7, North Ballarat has been building. Despite a three-point hiccup against Redan in Round 9, Maccas' boys have disposed of Bacchus Marsh (27pts, felt like 47), Melton South (83pts), Darley (69pts) and flag favourites Melton (34pts).

The Kangas are a proud group, dual reigning Premiers and a bona fide chance to feature again at the business end. Previously, it's been North Ballarat who has held the edge over the Kangas despite an inferior position on the ladder. Sometimes teams just match up better than others and I think this is a classic example. What is difficult for most teams to contain in East Point's case is not such an issue for North Ballarat. They seem to have the formula, the mix capable of dissolving the Kangas potency.

Bridges' boys get another crack at North Ballarat on Saturday, which makes for compelling viewing. If the Kangas are keen on locking away a top two finish, they'll need to get it done against a North combination that is hitting their straps, with an eye on a similar prize (double chance).    

I’m tipping a low-scoring game. How the Kangas respond to the pressure of North is enough to keep the eyes peeled on this must-watch showstopper. All will be revealed.

Given the Lakers' 1-10 win/loss record in 2022, coach Jack Fitzpatrick would take any result that resembled their 13-point loss to the Swans in Round 8. Ballarat kicked the last two goals of the game to survive a scare in conditions Fitzpatrick aptly described as abhorrent. Clearly a defining welcome for Jack to the Ballarat winter!

Expect Swans ruckman Marcus Powling to feature prominently, third up from a lengthy lay-off with a hamstring strain. His 'tap to advantage' ability will provide in-form mids Sam James and Will Liston with first use at centre bounce. Converting forward 50 entries remains a work in progress for the Swans but the recent inclusion of Jack Dunne, joining Andrew Hooper provides an extra avenue to goal.

The Swans' defence led by Nick Swain, returning Nick Weightman (concussion) and utility Angus Bade provide plenty of rebound, igniting the impressive Swans when on the spread. Lachie Dawson, Aiden Domic and Daniel Kennedy deliver the grunt between the arcs while their youth are not shy on leg speed.

The Lakers will be refreshed off a hard-earned bye last week and might offer something early to deny the Swans a must-win game on their own terms. Fitzpatrick will be aware the Swans aren't the fastest starters from the grid and will be keen to get them on the hop and stir thoughts of an upset in what would be a most memorable win in front of the hearty faithful. Easier said than done. Scotty Carlin, Jacob Coxall, Timmy Collins and the O'Connell boys will need to dig their heels in while Callum McKay and Nathan Pring lead a busy front six capable of a winning score.

On the flipside, Swans coach Joe Carmody will want this game put to bed early, silencing the crowd in the process. The prized double chance remains in play for the soaring Swannies!

When it comes to a top-of-the-table clash, we’re still not too sure who the hunters are, and who are the prey. There really are no easy wins in this competition, regardless of whether clubs are in the top six, pushing to make finals or just playing for the jumper.

Sebastopol coughed up a 26-point lead on the road against Bacchus Marsh before steadying late to record an all-important two-point win at Maddingley Park.

There was plenty at stake heading in as the prospect of being a game clear inside the top six brought out the best of both sides in this see-sawing affair.

The 'Burras (minus James Keeble) came to play early and were much cleaner with their ball handling and movement, on their way to a five-goal opening term led by Luke Kiel (2 goals), Matt Austin and Lachie Cassidy who were the primary instigators and beneficiaries of their spread. The Cobras were kept in the game at quarter time with two goals of their own, solely on the back of unforced Sebastopol errors. When the 'Burras kicked the opening two goals of the second term to extend the lead to 26, the forecast for the Cobras looked bleak in otherwise perfect conditions for football.

It was as if the 'Burras had been charged by a cheap battery, their flair and dare virtually disappeared allowing the Cobras back into the game with six consecutive goals. Tom German's men raised the bar around stoppage and began to reap some reward for their ball movement. Cobras forward Aaron Willetts (4 goals), three of those from 'holding' free kicks had the 'Burras defence nervous on the back of repeat entries caused by their own doings - specifically, turnovers.

While 21 scoring shots to 13 in favour of the Cobras tells a story of missed opportunity, the 'rushed' nature of the behinds makes the outcome easier to digest in the wash-up. Sure, the 'Burras took their opportunities, but the Cobras were solid converting in front of goal despite their 3.6 return in the second half. The 'Burras would be thrilled with the win as Liam Stow, Daniel Widgery and Jed Hill (2 goals) took best player honours. The Cobras were reminded of the degrees of difficulty against the better teams not 'turning up' from the get-go. Catching up proved all too much despite the efforts of Simon LaFranchi, Jake Owen, Ryley Stuhldreier and Jack Parente (2 goals). 

What the coaches said:

Tom German (Bacchus Marsh):Sebastopol got the jump on us, but we clawed our way back and were really strong through the middle part of the game. We just failed to take our opportunities while Sebastopol did.

Michael Searl (Sebastopol):It was nice to finally win a close one. Our boys showed plenty of desire and character to arrest the game back after Bacchus Marsh hit the front. Credit to the Cobras denying us the game on our own terms after we led (26 points) early on in the second quarter. We were made to work extremely hard for the win.

Enigmatic Darley were left lamenting a golden opportunity to consolidate their place in the top six, with a disappointing 14-point loss at home to Redan. You could reel off more than a handful of missing Devils on Saturday to validate the loss but the harsh reality is, that they had enough top end talent to get it done but too many skill errors would prove their undoing. A win for the Devils would have seen them a game clear inside the six. As a result, the Devils' Finals' chances look like a 50% chance at best as their local derby against Bacchus Marsh (7th) on August 6 looms as the premature decider.

The Devils have East Point (home), Bacchus Marsh (away), Bye, and North Ballarat (home) to round out their home and away season. Hats off to Redan and a fifth win. Izaac Grant (4 goals) was named best afield along with Cooper Atchison and progressive youngsters Harry Lawson (2 goals) and Liam Farnsworth (U/17 debut). The Lions remain a very slim mathematical chance of making the Finals. They would need Darley to lose their remaining three games, all while disposing of Lake Wendouree (home), Bacchus Marsh (away) and Melton South (home) comfortably themselves. Also, the Cobras would need to (only just) beat Darley and lose to Sunbury by as much as possible. 'Slim' is the operative word on the Lions' Finals chances.

What the coaches said:

Dan Jordan (Darley):(It was a) disappointing loss where we made too many simple skill errors and gave the ball back to Redan. Full credit to them and their ability to pressure for four quarters and capitilise on their turnovers. (There are) some great learnings and areas to focus on for our young group.

Jarrett Giampaolo (Redan):(There's) been plenty of close games that we've lost this year so it was really pleasing to fight one out and get a win. Two very young sides going at it and a good game of footy to watch. Consistency has been an issue for us, but I thought we played well for four quarters. Reward for effort.

Reigning dual Premiers East Point successfully reeled in an eight-goal deficit from early on in the second quarter to stun North Ballarat by 11 points, leaving the most loyal of fans in a frenzy of pride and disbelief.

When Brendan McCartney's North led by 37 at quarter time, questions surrounding the Kangas' ability to handle the 2021 Minor Premiers heat had been all but answered given it was considered a three-goal breeze at best. However, Jake Bridges' boys had other ideas on how this game was to play out. McCartney conceded in the aftermath that the Kangas simply 'wanted it more when it mattered’.

The hierarchy at the Kangas must have held some serious faith, steering the ship back from the brink. While the result wasn't the be-all and end-all for the Kangas staring down the barrel at quarter time, credit must be given to all and sundry on and off the field, 'getting the job done.' 

Kangas Premiership players Joel Van Meel, Jacob Brown, Cam Lovig, Mickitja Rotumah-Onus, Joel Mahar, Matty and Jordy Johnston (5 goals) led the charge in a methodical comeback win that could be looked back upon as a season-defining win. The self-belief and confidence boost potentially derived for this group is real. The club has alleviated any doubts about their place in the BFNL pecking order with a seventh win from their last nine games.

But what of North Ballarat? Clearly, their best is good enough and proven against the competition's heavyweights. But good enough for long enough, like many, remains their greatest challenge moving forward. While the game will be remembered more so for the resolve of the Kangas, one can't deny the ominous nature of North Ballarat in the first quarter - scary good.

Collingwood VFL affiliate Sam Glover (5 goals) starred in a losing side while Tom Bromley-Lynch, the Loader brothers and Isaac Lovison were recognised for their four-quarter efforts.

Jake Bridges (East Point):We were relentless and never gave up.

Brendan McCartney (North Ballarat):They wanted it more when it mattered and deserved a great win for their footy club. We will learn from the experience and move forward.

The Swans held off a plucky Lakers outfit to bank an important win on the road by six points.

Despite their impressive 9-4 record, the Swans were made to work hard for the win after trailing at halftime for a ninth occasion this year. The narrow win became the Swans' fifth coming from behind at the half. For the record, 54 out of the 70 BFNL games played so far this year (77%), show the team leading at half-time winning the games. On only 16 occasions (23%), including Ballarat (5 times) has the team trailing been able to come back and win. Next best are Darley (3), East Point (3), Melton (2), Redan, Sebastopol and North Ballarat (1).

I'm not sure how Swans coach Joe Carmody processes the information or whether there's any time spent referencing the habitual nature of their slow starts. As we near the business end, the Swans have three more tests to address the issue, if indeed it is one. I mean, how do you coach rectify the concern? North Ballarat (home), Sunbury (home) and Sebastopol (away) round out the perfect segue into finals for a Swans group on the rise.

Unlikely Swans hero Rhys Perry's six-goal best-on-ground performance, may well have been the difference between writing up the Swans win as opposed to a Lakers upset. The youngster had just two goals from his previous 11 games heading in. Lakers mid/forward Jacob Coxall's four goals gave the home side a chance to post a winning score, but a third-quarter lapse would deny them a second win of the season. Coxall, along with youngsters Cooper James and Bailey Ryan took it up to their more seasoned opponents but the run of Will Liston, Aiden Domic and Paddy Simpson proved enough for the Swans to prevail. Lakers Coach Jack Fitzpatrick was clearly pleased with the efforts of his young group despite the loss and will be hoping for a similar effort against Redan this Saturday. An upset win at City Oval over the Lions would end any slim chance of Redan featuring in the finals.      

What the coaches said:

Jack Fitzpatrick (Lake Wendouree):(We) learnt the hard lesson today that you can play three and a bit excellent quarters of footy and it's not enough to get the job done. They were able to kick 5.2 in a 20-minute period and it was the difference in the game.

Joe Carmody (Ballarat): We had a really poor first half. All credit to Lakers who defended us really well. Improved ball movement in the third quarter set us up with a winning lead at the final change.

Melton responded to their only loss in Round 13 with a comprehensive 148-point win over depleted cross-town rivals Melton South.

The Bloods forwards 'came out to play,' putting the Panthers to the sword booting 18 goals to one after half-time. Liam Carter (7 goals), Ryan Carter (5 goals) and Braedan Kight (5 goals) were the beneficiaries of the sheer weight of entries forward in an emphatic, ruthless display from the flag favourites.

Credit to the Panthers for starting as well as they did, within five points at the first change but that's where it ended and the flood gates opened. The Bloods kicked 25 goals to two after quarter time in devastating fashion to record the biggest winning margin and the highest score of the year to date. While the Bloods forwards rejoice in their scoreboard returns, coach Aaron Tymms did not miss the driving forces behind the opportunity. Mark Orr, Lachie Watkins (3 goals) and Jordy Cotter were all lauded as the primary contributors.

For Heath's Pritchard's Panthers, youngster Jarrod Bibby continues to show promise named best for a second time this year against the Bloods, while Billy Lloyd and Cody Chapman were acknowledged for their efforts. While Pritchard had every reason to be disappointed with the one-sided nature of the affair (understatement), their chances had been reduced to near zero in the absence of Shaun Wyatt, Dylan Jones, Jake Thornton-Gielen, Ben Casley, Dylan Conway (retired), Brendan Hooper and Daniel Vasjuta. The situation was further compounded for the Panthers after halftime when they lost Hudson Wilde (concussion), Shaun White (knee) and Broden Collins (hip).

Aaron Tymms (Melton):(A) Really good response from our boys to bounce back. (We) just did all the basics well.

Heath Pritchard (Melton South):I thought our first quarter was excellent and we played well. Melton are a good side and showed their strength - our boys tried hard but we were outmatched. Hopefully we get a few (players) back in the coming weeks and get back to being our competitive best.

After a hotly contested home and away season, we have finally reached the pointy end of the year. There will be plenty of intrigue ahead of the weekend with do-or-die clashes and potential premiership favouritism on the line!

Maddingley Park, Bacchus Marsh plays host to league heavyweights Melton and Darley for a highly anticipated Qualifying Final.

Trying to find differences between the two sides is like trying to split peas despite the Devils’ 2-0 season record over the reigning premiers.

Over recent weeks the Bloods have looked to be coasting with an eye toward the business end they know so well.

Despite a topsy-turvy run with injury in the back half of the season, both sides look primed and ready to go. From the outside, only Brett McIntyre (Melton) and Mace Cousins (Darley) are likely to miss.

The Bloods won't be dwelling on their earlier defeats to Darley too much, rather as a learning tool, limiting the prospect of a third straight loss to the Devils and possible elimination final next week.

The minor premiers had excuses at Darley Park in their 21-point loss losing Lachie Watkins (heavy knock), Ryan Carter (ill), Brody Sullivan (ankle) and Lachlan Walker (knee) in the latter stages but all will be ok to play this weekend.

Brenton Payne (15 goals from 5 games) and Jono O'Brien missed the Round 17 loss and will add to the aerial presence (Payne) and physicality around stoppage (O'Brien).

The Devils have won seven games in a row and arrive with no excuses. In both wins over the Bloods this year the Devils had more ball (+82 and +68) representing 11-point (Round 8) and 21-point (Round 17) advantages.

Finding a winner between these two is a difficult task. Both sides rank one and two in offence and defence and have eight players inside the top 50 goalkickers for 2023 but only one has access to the reigning Henderson Medalist in Brett Bewley.      

Scoop’s tip: Darley

East Point won't know themselves when they return home (by chance) for an elimination final with cross town rival Sebastopol.

It will be just their third game on Eastern Oval since Round 9, one of those more recently against the Burra in Round 16.

While the Kangas’ 4-4 win/loss record at home in 2023 should be of little concern for the Burra, any advantage given the evenness of the competition can't be ignored.

Sebastopol have proven tough to beat in Ballarat all year - in fact last week’s loss to Redan was their first at home, and for the record, the first time they had trailed at halftime during any of their 13 games in the west.

Kangas’ star mid Matty Johnston (concussion) returns to bolster the midfield stocks, joining his brother and Henderson Medal chance Jordy for first crack at the depth laden Burra who have seemingly hit a late hurdle.

A season ending broken leg to playing coach Luke Kiel will surely have rattled the group, not mentioning the fitness clouds over crucial playmakers Toby Hutt and James Keeble.

Kiel's DNA is made for finals while Hutt (in best 3 out of 4 times) and Keeble (2 out 4) featured prominently for the Burra in last year’s arduous four week finals campaign.

While the Burra's confidence levels should be high heading in with two previous wins over the Kangas already this season (34 points in Round 8 and 9 points in Round 16), don’t be so sure this result is all said and done.   

Expect the Kangas to embrace the underdog tag and really serve it up to the Burra and steal one of the upsets of the season to date.

Scoop’s tip: East Point

Just what version of Redan we're likely to see will determine the potential outcome of this sudden death elimination final at Eastern Oval on Sunday.

Sure, Brendan McCartney's North Ballarat have a 2-0 season advantage heading in but there's a certain feel about what the Lions can produce if they can deliver their best.

Redan did have some joy at Eastern Oval earlier in the year (Round 6) downing East Point by 13 points while North Ballarat fell 20 points shy of the Kangas in Round 5.

Clutching at straws I know, but just identifying some form at the ground that also brought the end to the Roosters’ finals campaign in the corresponding fixture against Sebastopol last year.

While we're unsure of what version we'll get from Redan, you can be confident of what to expect from McCartney's North Ballarat.

Their top end is as good as any on their day namely - Jack Riding, Jamie Quick, Stewart Crameri, Cam McCullum and the Collingwood VFL listed Sam Glover is also a chance to feature.

But for all intent and purposes, the Lions’ unpredictable best is good enough to progress. Isaac Grant (54 goals) and a pain-free Lachie George head an enigmatic group untapped on it's potential.

Just where to start denying the Lions on their day is a wave that's proven in more recent times over Sebastopol and Darley.

Again, the Lions’ back six will be stretched by the highly talented Roosters front half, and will require a chop-out from their mids to keep the game in check.

North Ballarat will start warm favorites and deservedly so on consistency of work ethic and foundation alone but there's a lingering feeling that all lower placed teams in week one of BFNL finals will look the winners at some stage.

Who really knows?    

Scoop’s tip: Redan

The wait is over.

Two of the competitions best performed teams in 2024 will go head-to-head for the McDonald’s BFNL premiership cup at City Oval on Saturday.

On form alone, there's no two sides more deserving of a chance securing the time honoured silverware. 

The Bloods, under new coach Troy Scoble, have been a model of consistency having won 15 of 16 home and away games, plus two finals, marching into their third grand final in the last five completed seasons.

Not to be outdone, East Point went through the home and away season with 14 wins in a row but have had to endure three 'down to the wire' finals enroute to the grand final including an unforgettable 150 minute extra-time win over Darley in last week’s prelim.

In fact, it was the Kangas’ sixth game in a row against top six opposition, the grand final will mark number seven in as many weeks.

Recently crowned BFNL Coach of the Year, Joe Carmody, will need to extract something special if his boys can go back to the well, restore energy levels and execute against a ruthless Bloods’ outfit who have been sitting back watching everything unfold on the back of a week off.

For the record, Melton's last six games against top six opposition has been spread over 91 days, a much easier preparation on the body.

But what say of the mind?

Carmody will surely channel the advantages of a gruelling preparation adopting the old theory 'iron sharpens iron'.

The former Ballarat Swans coach has no other choice.

Kangas fans can be guaranteed this messaging will be well received by a core group of experienced leaders led by Matty Johnston who will still be buzzing after his Henderson Medal crowning on Monday night and Jackson Merrett who will endeavour to represent, spreading the optimism.

Ambition is one thing, execution another.

I know the Kangas have had terrible conditions to endure over the last month but when system and shape take a back seat to 'territory gain' for long enough it can be unsettling, especially if a fine day lands upon us.

System is rinse, repeat, execute, trust week in, week out - the Bloods’ 'one wood' essentially.

Something tells me the more recent version of the Kangas have had to prioritise their time more in the recovery space.

The Bloods are all on the same page, their exits look clean and energised.

Handball give and receive options are abundant, their foot skills, especially in transition, exemplary.

I fear for the Kangas defending the Bloods on the spread.

Scoble's unit will look like they're running on top of the ground for long periods, the Kangas I hasten to add, through it given an arduous last seven weeks.

I wish the Kangas all the best, but I truly believe they're up against it despite being the only side to have downed the Bloods in 2024.

It would be a monumental achievement for Carmody and his talent laden group to win a third flag for the club in the last five completed seasons but given the prep it looks a tough ask.

Unfortunately, Ferrari's need fuel too!

The Bloods will not take anything for granted.

Under Scoble, nothing is complete until the final siren on grand final day.

They'll be made to earn everything that comes their way I assure you.

If indeed, that is in the form of a premiership cup, what a united, emotional accomplishment that would be capping an otherwise challenging year for the Bloods loyal and faithful.

Brown, not dissimilar to Merrett ranks fourth in the comp for effective kicks, seventh for kicks, fourth for marks AND second for intercept marks. Round 1 Football Preview with Scoop!

With Good Friday action done and dusted, eight more clubs will kick off their 2023 campaigns this weekend. It's set to be a big round of BFNL football this Saturday!

Expect underdogs Melton South, under new coaches Jason Hamilton and Ryan Hoy, to 'bring the heat' early when they face off against cross-town rival and reigning premiers Melton in another Round 1 edition of the local derby.

But that may be 'all she wrote' given where the two teams are at as Aaron Tymms' Bloods unveil their 2022 flag success ahead of the opening bounce.

The Bloods will be hard to beat again in 2023, in fact they're one of the flag favorites for many despite losing a few players in the off-season.

How the Panthers cope with the Bloods 'spoilt for choice' options forward of centre will have a huge say in the extent of the result. The Carter brothers, Braedyn Kight and Luke Heeney all kicked bags of goals at stages last year and the Panthers will be hopeful any resemblance of that can be put on hold for another week. Easier said than done.

Just how these two sides line up is a tough ask ahead of selection considering both have endured some turnover of their lists.

I'm looking forward to the return of the Bloods and how they deal with the status of the reigning premiers and the hunger to go again.

For the Panthers, progress of home-grown talent looks promising regardless of their final win/loss tally. Cody Chapman, Mitch Fino, Riley Theo, Rhys Lee and Jarod Bibby are five that spring to mind.

What influence will the Panthers new additions have? Well that's up to Tymmsy and his support staff to worry about.

Scoop’s tip:Melton to run away with it after half-time.

A youthful Swans outfit under new coach Chris Maple will start underdogs at home first up against the Devils, with up to 10 players missing from the side that reached last years’ preliminary final.

Outside of experienced forward Andrew Hooper (39 goals in 2022), finding avenues to goal may be the Swans’ greatest challenge with close to 30 per cent of last year’s 198 goals having left the club.

Maple is on a mission, blooding youth for sustained success and will look forward to the hit-out against a Dan Jordan led Darley who would be no strangers to the Swans situation. In fact, the Devils path is not too dissimilar, merely 12 months it's senior.

They too, must overcome loss of their own, in particular A-Grade duo Nick Rodda (58 goals) and Dylan Landt. For the record the Devils were eight wins and two losses with Landt and three wins and five losses without.

It’s also worth noting Darley has not beaten Ballarat since Round 18, 2019.

How the club deals with newfound expectation on the back of a 'finals win' season will be intriguing. 

Scoop’s tip: I'm leaning to the more seasoned, experienced Devils led by reigning Henderson Medalist Brett Bewley and ‘full time' addition Billy Myers (Williamstown VFL) to get the job done despite the resistance of key Swans quintet, Bailey Van de Heuval, Will Liston, Marcus Powling, Andrew Hooper and Angus Bade.

Expect Sebastopol to kickstart their season at home on a high when they host a rebuilding Bacchus Marsh.

it will be all systems go for the 'Burra under new coaches Luke Kiel and Michael Columbro as they attempt to end a 48-year premiership drought on the back of two runner-up finishes in 2019 and 2022.

These two sides are on their own separate journeys at present. The 'Burra remain clearly in the premiership window while the final win/loss tally for the Cobras under new Coach Jason Williams will not define their season.

An exodus of key playing personnel in the off-season has tempered any expectations of a Cobras return to finals for the first time since 2018.

Whether inspirational 'Burras leader Tony Lockyer takes his place will be a point of interest, on the comeback trail off a nasty syndesmosis injury sustained in last years’ week one finals win over North Ballarat.

The 'Burras ability to convert scores from Cobras turnover this round will be one area both Kiel and Columbro will cast a keen eye toward as the clubs’ off-season focus leant towards "a capacity to hit the scoreboard more".

For the Cobras, games into emerging organic talent will be the primary focus amid the infancy of their development phase. Expect Williams to find a few diamonds in the rough through opportunity but as for prospects of an upset win in Round 1, that looms a different challenge altogether. Check out Cobra newbies, Luke Goetz (200cm ruck), Jake McReery (mid/forward) and Tom Gillies (forward).

'Burras players, fighting for spots with a 'clean slate' under their new coaches will want to impress and cement their positions. For when all is said and done, the clubs’ last two flag attempts while brave, were simply not enough.

Scoop’s tip: Sebastopol comfortably.

Sunbury look primed and ready to go ahead of this potential match of the round season opener against North Ballarat.

The Lions’ previous two campaigns have endured horror starts on the win/loss front with Travis Hodgson's men virtually out of finals contention by the halfway mark of the season.

Hodgson and his staff have made no qualms of their intentions to start well, in fact this has been their primary focus and with unbeaten pre-season form coming in.

Sunbury's ins have been pointed, not overkill. Cody Brand (key position utility), Josiah Garistos (defender) and livewire Rivva Karpany (forward) fill the voids. They needed little more despite back-to-back five-win seasons. Josh Guthrie (North Melbourne VFL) and Mitch Lewis (Port Melbourne) are now full time at the club. The Lions will relish the running battle against Brendan Macartney's 'sure to be fit' group.

North Ballarat welcome marquee signing and former AFL 100 gamer Stewart Crameri to provide a key target forward, an area of focus missing at the club last year. Injuries didn't help though. Crameri, aged 34, hasn't played since 2019 but he'll know he's had a hit out come 5pm on the BFNL’s largest ground. Thankfully for Crameri however, his running capacity has been one of his greatest strengths over his career.

The midfield battle will decide this game. North Ballarat's strength this year will be forward of centre - expect the Roosters to kick some decent scores given their options. Sunbury's game style has changed over their last 10 games, all duly noted. If the Lions can win clearance the clearance game they should get the points. Hodgson and Macartney would both agree, this area will have a significant bearing on the result.

Scoop’s tip: Sunbury. They will be hard to beat at home all year.

Round 1 Football Preview with 'Scoop'

With anticipation at an all-time high, Round 1 offers plenty of tantalising contests to kick off the 2024 season!

The Cobras are in good hands following the appointment of new coach Dennis Armfield and offsider Andrejs Everitt as they prepare to host Chris Maple's young Swans at Maddingley Park.

Despite both sides missing finals last year, the future looks bright with a host of young talent making up a majority of game day senior lists.

So where do you start tipping a winner here?

The Cobras have the Swans covered aerially with proven talent Jake Owen, Luke Goetz, newcomer rebound defender Rye Penny (Collingwood VFL listed) and progressive youngsters Joel Freeman (21 goals/8 games last year) and Isaac Nixon.

If the Cobras can kick the ball well, which has been their Achilles heel over recent seasons, and maximise the advantage, the chances of posting a winning score will improve significantly.

Poor field kicking, however, will open the door for Maple's Swans who have the leg speed to expose any side on the spread.

While livewire Swans small forward Andrew Hooper is likely to have a pre-determined match up, expect Armfield and Everitt to back in their group having a genuine crack with a focus moreso on the execution of their own game.

The Cobras defence, led by Penny will need to be on their mettle denying the pacy Swans an opportunity to turn the tables on their last visit.

Looking forward to seeing top end Swans Lachie Dalgliesh (new), Will Liston, Callum Wellings (if available), Hooper and Footscray VFL listed duo Angus Bade and Tristan Maple take it up to the Cobras who look as united as a Bacchus Marsh group seen for some time.

PLAYER WATCH

Rye Penny (Bacchus Marsh):Super addition for the Cobras. Expect the rebounding Collingwood VFL listed defender to have immediate impact with his speed and aerial presence.

Lachie Dalgliesh (Ballarat):Former Essendon VFL listed player (30yo, 185cm) expected to play a number of roles for Maple's young Swans. The 30-year old's experience on-field will help extract the most from a group as he eyes a move into coaching sometime in the future.  

Scoop’s tip: Bacchus Marsh

The Bloods, under new coach Troy Scoble, will start warm favorites making it 11 local derby wins on the trot when they visit the home of cross-town rivals Melton South.

The two sides are at opposite ends of any flag discussions as the Bloods look to restore their reputation as the number one seed following a disappointing straight sets exit from last year’s finals.

Melton South on the other hand just want to be more competitive after a winless 2023.

New coach Travis Hodgson is the man leading the charge, the fightback if you will. It's hard to afford the Panthers a clean slate when assessing their chances despite the Hodgson appointment, a new season dawn and the arrival of bona fide talent.

The club won just one quarter for the 2023 season averaging 29 points per game (187.5 points against).

Unfortunately, the Panthers will be missing up to six players for their season opener, and not expected to resemble their potential best 22 until at least Round 3.

Even then, an injury interrupted pre-season for the returning will surely test conditioning and continuity.

If it's any consolation, the Bloods are tipped to be similarly shy of their best 22, paving an ideal segue for the 'what have's' conversation re-depth in the aftermath.

PLAYER WATCH

Ryan Carter (Melton):Has kicked 25 goals in his last four games against the Panthers.

Patrick Veszpremi (Melton South): Former AFL player with the Western Bulldogs. Will aid the Panthers especially on the smaller ground with his penetrating right foot.

Scoop’s tip: Melton

There's plenty to like about a rejuvenated Sunbury ahead of the 2024 season with a new coach in Matthew White, encouraging acquisitions, Ben Cameron among a few, the return of multiple VFL listed talent and an injury free captain in Tyson Lever.

However, there's no denying the capitulation of the Sunbury Lions last year who post their second season bye, lost their last five games to miss the finals. Saturday will mark 266 days or 38 weeks since their last win for premiership points.

Off-season for BFNL sides who don't make finals leaves a long time for contemplation.

Another opportunity for the proud Sunbury club has finally arrived in the form of a new season opener, albeit on the road against Redan at City Oval.

Solid Pre-season matches against Keilor, Hoppers Crossing and Gisborne should see them cherry ripe to kickstart White's BFNL tenure off on the right foot with no excuses.

Redan hasn't had much luck in the off-season losing Isaac Grant (Hepburn) and more recently star recruit Lachie Bond (leg) who will spend a month on the sidelines.

But luck aside, good or bad won't alter the focus of Redan coach Gary Learmonth who will see the misfortune as an opportunity to blood another exciting youngster into the senior ranks.

Both sides have promising youth, with Sunbury boasting seven players from last year’s BFNL interleague team that defeated the Hampden League.

When you add top end talent (Mitch Lewis, Josh Guthrie for example) to that wealth of youth you make a serious case for an opening round win.

Redan's young guns are a year or two younger than the Sunbury equivalent, call it 25-35 games shy on experience.

But that won't concern Learmonth either, he'll back in his crew getting the job done at home in front of a large contingent of eager eyes and ears.

Call it 'only Round 1' at your peril - these two sides could be fighting for a similar spot come the  business end.

Time to get to work.

PLAYER WATCH

Marty Boyer (Redan):Tall, lean, young left footer dangerous around the goal rose to prominence with a five goal haul last year against the Cobras. Look for further improvement.

Jake Sutton (Sunbury):Quality lead up forward with excellent hands formerly Essendon VFL listed. Will play a prominent role in Sunbury's fortunes in the font half this season (37 goals/11 games last year)

Scoop’s tip: Sunbury

The Burra will look to consolidate its recent dominance over the Lakers when the two sides face off at CE Brown Reserve.

Popular leader Tony Lockyer has taken over the reins at Sebastopol who continue to strive for that elusive premiership, a drought dating back to the mid 1970's.

While there are some external reservations on the Burra’s chances, the same cannot be said for those held inside the four walls. Despite losing key contributors James Keeble, Hugo Papst and big man Arnold Kirby in the off season, Lockyer is confident the next wave of Burra talent can fill the void.

The Burra have the unofficial second easiest draw behind Melton and will have every chance to strategise, manage and 'get up' when the whips are cracking.

If the Burra can stay healthy there's no reason why they can't be in the silverware conversation. The journey begins with a likely win over Lake Wendouree.

Looking forward to Bailey Medwell and Jack Bambury taking their game to a new level and the growth of Cooper Littlehales who looks a ready-made type.

While only a brave few would dare tip the Lakers given their returns over the past few seasons, they're not without upside.

Can't wait to see twin towers Tom Zampatti and Felix Fogarty in action providing an aerial target after a positive pre-season alongside spruik recruit Jayden Wright.

Wishing Lakers coach Rohan Brown all the best in his new role, one of seven new coaches to be appointed by BFNL clubs for the coming season.

The Devils will unfurl their third flag in seven (completed) seasons when they host East Point in a Round 1 blockbuster.

However, that will be all of the 'looking back' coach Dan Jordan will let infiltrate his group, understanding a new season is upon us, and the looming threat of the Kangas is the here and now.

Both sides are laden primarily with midfield and offensive talent with a number of players more than capable of proving the difference.

Get set for another mouthwatering midfield battle as the Devils’ core led by reigning dual Henderson Medalist Brett Bewley and Luther Baker aim to overcome Matty Johnston and the returning Makitja Rottumah-Onus.

The availability of progressive VFL talent Joel Cadman (Darley/Werribee) and Alex Molan (East Point/Essendon VFL) poses a bittersweet scenario for both camps.

Where star Kangas’ playmaker Jordy Johnston starts, mid or forward is a problem new coach Joe Carmody is lucky to have.

A lingering hamstring complaint for Joe Dodd (doubtful) and potential VFL selection for Molan could make Carmody's decision easier. Jackson Merrett (suspended) will also miss.

The Kangas too will have their own challenges defending Devils trio Billy Myers, Will Johnson and Brady Wright. Myers (50) and Johnson (40) combined for 90 of the Devils 284 goals last season (32%). Wright spent the most part of 2023 recovering from injury, and brings plenty of aerial upside that won't be overlooked in Carmody's plans for containment.

The action returns this weekend after a long but intriging off-season. With plenty of enticing contests on the fixture, we're sure to start the year off with a bang!

In the first game under lights for the 2025 Season, Ballarat Swans host North Ballarat in one of two Ballarat based clashes.

Although North Ballarat has won nine of its past twelve clashes against Ballarat, the figures may be a little unkind to the Swans.

The Swans stormed home in 2024 to win seven of their last eight games, before their finals campaign came to an end after a six-point loss to East Point in gruelling conditions.

The Roosters on the other hand will look to enter the 2025 Season in much better shape than the backend of 2024. Injuries flooded the roster, including the now Port Melbourne VFL listed Riley Polkinghorne who, up until injury, was in good stead to be a Henderson Medal favourite.

Both clubs will be flaunting a number of new recruits for season 2025.

Expect the Swans’ Biggie Nyuon to headline the list of recruits across both teams and see how he’ll find his feet at the BFNL level.  

Meanwhile it’s weight in numbers for the recruits at North Ballarat, with eight players coming onto the Senior list. Josh Morris (Box Hill) has reunited with former coach Clint Proctor to lead the charge for the Rooster-recruits.  

Whilst both Clint Proctor and Ash Baker say they enter the 2025 season with the same brand of football, with two new coaches at the helm for both Clubs, there’s room to expect the unexpected.

With their last encounter being a draw, next to nothing separates the two sides coming into Round 1. After both teams made the finals last year, the winner will be off to the best start possible with a win over a fellow ’24 finalist.

Tip:North Ballarat

Undoubtedly the Match of the Day to kick off the BFNL Season for 2025.

After an almost unblemished 2024 season (one loss), Melton will commence its day by raising the 2024 premiership flag and look to enter the season with the same standard of performance that saw them take out the premiership.

Whilst celebrations will be on show for Melton, without doubt all attention will quickly shift to one of the biggest recruits of the season.

Nick Hind, although not unfamiliar with the BFNL landscape, will make his return to the league after finishing up his 95-game AFL career at Essendon and St Kilda.

The dynamic of Hind fitting in with Brett Bewley will be a partnership that punters are eager to see on the field.

Question marks remain on how much of Ryan Carter will be seen for the Bloods this season. Meanwhile, Jordy Cotter has been progressing well through the break after a foot injury midway through 2024 and could make his return to the field.

Melton ran away with the win in all three of the teams’ encounters in 2024 but looking at the two teams from a broader view offers a different perspective.

Next to nothings splits the two in every meeting. The last two years has seen them win three games each, with four of the six games having margins of 21 points or less.

Both Troy Scoble and Dan Jordan’s coaching philosophies emphasise the importance of playing a role, so expect similar approaches from both teams in the brand of football on display.

In a bold prediction for 2025, the opening Match of the Round has every bit of potential to showcase the teams facing off this year’s grand final.

Tip: Melton

With both the Cobras and the Lakers having had seasons last year well below what they would have been hoping for, it is fair to say there is quite an importance on getting the ideal start to the season for both teams.

The two clashes last year saw the visiting team return home with the points, with Round 12 marking Lake Wendouree’s first win at Maddingley Park since 2018.

Historically they are evenly matched, their 53 meetings split by just one win and the 26 matches at Maddingley Park sitting at 13 wins apiece.                

Stats aside, there is one name everyone is eagerly awaiting to see on Bacchus Marsh’s team sheet: Zach Tuohy.

Will the recently retired Geelong premiership player line up against the Lakers in Round 1? Or will BFNL punters need to patiently wait to Round 2 v Redan or even the Good Friday game against East Point?

The Cobras welcomed seven new recruits alongside Tuohy in the off-season, all in the mix for senior selection.

Meanwhile, the Lakers welcomed five players to Laker-land, including the return of Jake Lohmann after his time with Morningside. Expect Lohmann to be an explosive presence, which should be a massive help to ruckman Tom Zampatti.

Coming off an impressive individual season, Zampatti will face a mighty challenge from the first bounce as he fronts up against arguably the best ruckman in the BFNL, Luke Goetz.

There’s a lot of similarities between the Cobras and the Lakers as they enter the 2025 season. Both playing lists featuring a lot of youth, both looking to vastly improve on the 2024 season and both knowing a win here sets them in good stead of chasing that top six. 

Tip:Bacchus Marsh

In the second Ballarat based clash for Round 1, friendly rivals East Point and Sebastopol meet early in the season for the second year running.

The home team will be eager to maintain their form from the 2024, especially at the Eastern Oval.

The Roos are yet to drop a game in front of their home fans for some time, with the last occasion being at the hands of none other than the Burra in late 2023.

An injury cloud surrounded the Burra throughout 2024, who will hope to enter the ’25 season in the best shape possible.

Hugo Papst returns to the Club after a year with the Horsham Demons. Papst featured in both the Burra’s recent Grand Final appearances and will be a vital presence in defence and attack.

Bailey Medwell may miss the season opener after he featured in Footscray’s Round 1 VFL clash against Northern Bullants. After a Bye in Round 2, Medwell will well and truly be in the midst for selection after a solid debut (19 Disposals, 1 Goal).

Meanwhile, the Roos recently welcomed back Matt Johnston, Jordan Johnston and Jacob Brown after spending the off-season in the NTFL.

It remains to be seen whether their time in the NTFL helps them hit the ground running or if they need some time to adjust to the BFNL format.

The Roos will likely enter the season as contenders but not without some key losses. Experience in 150 gamer Jordy Taylor (Queensland) and young talents Strahan Robinson (Port Fairy), Tom Conlan (VAFA) and Max Filmer (Interstate) have all departed from the Grand Final side.

Whilst recent clashes say otherwise, still expect a good battle between the sides.

Will East continue their unbeaten record at home or will the Burra once again end their streak?

We're officially into the second half of the season now and the top six mix is just as intriguing as ever.

Remember the Bloods? Saturday will mark 21 days between hit-outs for the reigning premiers when they host Round 9 winners Ballarat.

Bloods’ coach Aaron Tymms had reservations about the nature of his bye allocation at the start of the season but given a recent run of injury and illness within the group, the break in hindsight has bordered on timely.

While important Bloods’ big men Liam Carter (calf) and Brett McIntyre (foot) prepare for a lengthy spell on the sidelines, the flag favorites are likely to welcome back midfield duo Jack Walker and Lachie Watkins who missed their 11-point Round 8 loss to Darley.

Newcomer and dasher Brady Rowles is a chance while Adrian Monitto is unlikely.

For the travelling young Swans, a golden opportunity presents - a chance to measure their levels of improvement in a real 'throw at the stumps game' against the competition benchmark.

Paddy Simpson has returned to full fitness following a shoulder complaint, teaming up with reigning club best and fairest Will Liston.

Marcus Powling continues to lead from the opening bounce and has had another ripping season while Andrew Hooper (24 goals), Rhys Perry (9) and Tom Mooney (7) are providing an aerial target forward.

Swans’ coach Chris Maple will need his boys up and about early and reminded of the home side’s dominance in third quarters.

Confidence levels for the visitors should be sky high after a breakout win over Sunbury, however, Melton at Melton are a different proposition altogether.

Yes, that is correct, Darley finally returns home for their first of eight back ended games ahead of a likely finals campaign. But don't expect it to be all champagne and roses for the home side given Redan are in this game up to their eyeballs.

The Devils’ journey back to full health won't be complete for some weeks, opening the door for the seventh placed Lions to replicate their last season success at the Den.

Despite losing to third placed Sebastopol last weekend the young Lions, with a side including five eligible U/19 players, did win each of the last three quarters before finishing five points shy at the final siren.

On the flipside, the undermanned Devils failed to flatter, losing all four quarters at MARS Stadium. Dan Jordan's two trips to North Ballarat in charge of the Devils have ended in 78 and 57-point defeats.

It's unlikely the Devils will see a return of any players already sidelined, while the Lions could welcome back star mid Lachie George (back), joining in-form trio Daniel Bond, Izaac Grant and Cooper Craig-Peters with Nathan Dunstan in the ruck.

For all of Grant's work in his new role through the midfield, the once permanent half forward still has 20 goals in 2023, ranked seventh in the BFNL.

The Devils will need a spark beyond Brett Bewley, Shane Page and Matthew Brett getting it done. Who will stand up? They're capable of finding at least one or two, you can't fluke seven straight wins on the road without a genuine spread of contributors. It might be Darley, just, in a close one.

The underdog Cobras will aim for a hattrick of wins when they host East Point at Maddingley Park.

Unfortunately for Jason William's men, up to five players will return to the Coates Talent Under 18s pathway competition from Saturday's 98-point win over Melton South.

Sure, the winless Panthers is not ideal form, but the importance of those young Cobras are impossible to ignore.

The Cobras would have been an outside chance with the inclusion of their Western Jets and GV Rebels affiliates given the Kangas have lost three of their last four, admittedly all against finals contenders, Sebastopol, Melton and Redan.

Plenty would need to go right for the Cobras to produce one of the upsets of the season. While they celebrated making it two on the bounce last week, you need only go the Cobras first half against the Panthers to suggest they're a fair way off challenging the Kangas, at present.

The Johnston boys are the obvious Kangas’ A-Grade talent Williams will need to curb to be any hope while playing coach Jackson Merrett is cruising under the radar hitting the scoreboard with nine majors in his four games.

Known duo Bryce McDougall (8 goals) and Brad Whittaker (16 goals - missed last week) will need some containing too, not mentioning the Kangas next wave of young talent who are more than capable - Liam Canny, Liam Howard, Jack Jeffrey and Patrick Hannaford to name four.

Containing the Cobras top end influence is the obvious task looming ahead for Merrett. Jake Owen with 16 goals for the season, Jake McCreery, who has been named in the best on five occasions and Luke Goetz in the ruck tick all the boxes.

Expect Sebastopol's stingy defence (comp rank #1) to deny the Lions forwards in a low scoring affair at Marty Busch Reserve.

Five times already this season has the Burra kept opposition to 57 points or less. If the visitors can't find avenues to goal, tipping a result in this game could be easier than first thought.

While the Lions disappointed on the road last week in their 26-point loss to Ballarat, coach Travis Hodgson would like their chances despite the home side owning the favorites tag.

They will miss their Captain Tyson Lever (foot) once again but will sweat on the availability of Essendon VFL listed player Harry Minton-Connell who missed for precautionary reasons last week with a hamstring complaint. Mitch Lewis will also miss.

On the other hand the Burra could welcome Werribee VFL listed pair Jay Dahlhaus and Jesse Clark to bolster stocks given the Tigers have the bye.

While Sebastopol assumed a majority of control in last week’s five-point win over Redan, they did lose three quarters, which must be of some concern.

Burras’ dual coach combo Luke Kiel and Michael Columbro will need to find suitable match ups for the Lions forwards. Fortunately, the Burra aren't bereft of options.

Like most, the game will be decided primarily at the coalface. Can Sunbury find enough impetus around the contest to deny the Burra on their home deck?

They clearly failed the brief against much younger opposition last week so expect a correction on intensity, especially early.

Despite the prospect of some major outs for the 'Burra ahead of Saturday, mainly Tony Lockyer with a cork, the home side should do enough to make it a seventh win of the season.

Expect North Ballarat to continue on their winning ways when they meet a one-win Lake Wendouree outfit.

Brendan McCartney's men are doing plenty right through the middle part of the season, never more so than last week’s 57-point demolition job of ladder leaders Darley.

The Roosters are in form, binding well with a feverish appetite to win the footy. Their top end players are in a purple patch of form and will look to improve in the coming weeks with the return of important utility Tom Hotchin from a 12 month layoff with an ACL injury.

Takeover Lakers’ coach Tim Shearer won't have to look far for the handful of Roosters laden with match winning talent.

Jamie Quick (32 goals), Riley Polkinghorne, Cam McCallum, Stewart Crameri and Werribee VFL listed Jack Riding head an unofficial top five, each in ripping form. But knowing is one thing, containing obviously another.

If the Lakers can match the trademark heat of the Roosters, maximum damage will be spared. It was encouraging to see Lakers’ duo Tom Zampatti and Michael Foster feature prominently in last week’s loss to East Point while you can bank on the week-to-week output from the O'Connell and Helyar boys.

Tipping the final score to resemble something similar to their last meeting in early 2022.

Scoop’s tip: North Ballarat

As we enter the second half of an all anticipated 2024 season, a number of season defining clashes present themselves for Round 10.

Sunbury host Melton in a highly anticipated top of the table clash in the BFNL's Match of the Round.

The numbers give every indication very little separates the two sides.

The Bloods have a slight edge in most KPIs according to the stats including scoring, pressure, disposals (except for handballs), contested ball, marks, clearances (overall and centre).

The advantage is so narrow, the mere fact Sunbury are playing at home near squares the ledger.

Identifying a weakness, enough to swing the pendulum of favour has not been easy.

Given the nature of near mirror image performance to date, even the tactical battle between the magnets off field will surely play a pivotal role.

In the event of one side getting the jump, can the opposition find a way back?

Coaches Matty White (Sunbury) and Troy Scoble (Melton) are astute mentors of the game but have rarely been tested or stretched in their seven and eight game winning season - a challenging day beckons.

Sure, Sunbury had to find a way back against the Devils (eight point win) and the Bloods had to dig in to hold the Roosters at bay (six point win) but East Point have proven both are gettable under finals like pressure.

Nonetheless, the Lions have been super impressive with wins of 25 (Redan), 53, 59, 81,128 and 144 points.

On the flipside, the Bloods remaining six wins make a compelling case for the favorites tag - 67 (Darley), 70, 76, 117, 118 and 188 points. Ridiculous.

Given the similarities in the two sides’ defence and midfield make-ups, it's the Bloods’ potent and less predictable front half that has me leaning to a win for the visitors.

Melton has six players with 10 season goals or more, including four of the top 12 goalkickers in the competition - B.Kight (48), R.Carter (19), K.Borg (15), R.Davis (15).

Sunbury has just two players with 10 goals or more - J.Sutton (36) and M.McLean (27) who in fairness rank #2 and #3 behind Kight.

Furthermore, the Bloods hold the advantage for marks Inside forward 50 (15.3/13.8) of which Braedan Kight (5.4) is responsible for 35%.

Lions duo Jake Sutton (4.6 @33%) and Mitch McLean (2.5 @18%) make up more than half for the hosts highlighting a greater focus and predictability of entries for the competition's #1 ranked defence to navigate.

Darley arrive at Melton South fresh off a 21-day break endeavouring to reboot its title defence when they take on the winless Panthers.

Sure, the result has 'foregone conclusion' written all over it but Devils coach Dan Jordan will be looking for his group to build on good habits ahead of a challenging period of 'double ups' at the back end of their draw against the likes of Melton, Sunbury and North Ballarat.

Jordan won't be in a rush either, well aware anything resembling the best version of the Devils will take time.

The tired old cliche 'one week at a time' fits the narrative to a tee in this scenario as the promising collective, eye a peak in form, health and fitness toward the business end of the season.

The Devils job at hand has been made easier in the absence of a handful of key Panthers due to injury.

Patrick Veszpremi (hand), Anthony Wilson (hamstring), Tom Phillips (hand), Jeff Garlett (hamstring), Lachie Pritchard (cork), Nathan Gemmel (hamstring) and Jesse Geddes (concussion) are all unavailable.

Sure, the aforementioned have varying degrees of ability but the point of mentioning them all is the depth factor. As many as five players who took part in last week’s 174-point loss to the Lakers will be replaced by five players that missed out on selection ahead of the humiliating defeat.

A tough afternoon is expected for the Panthers - containing the likes of Brett Bewley, Billy Myers, Luther Baker and co will test the resilience of the most loyal Panthers, both on and off field.

Expect Myers and Brady Wright to feature prominently, hitting the scoreboard.

The Devils will be happy to get through unscathed, injury free. For the Panthers, another test against formidable opposition awaits. 5pm for some you would think, can't come quick enough.

Visiting East Point will aim to buck the trend of home success for North Ballarat and emulate the feats of their nine-point win at Mars Stadium in Round 18 last year.

The simple fact is, the Kangas are flying under new season coach Joe Carmody and have taken all before them since their bye in Round 2.

The journey since has been unparalleled with seven wins on the trot including Melton and Sunbury. Super effort.

But one man - Brendan McCartney, who leads an army of willing young men, stands in their way of making it eight on the bounce.

The experienced mentor faced a similar scenario last year when the Kangas surged into a preliminary final on the back of four straight wins.

To suggest McCartney's choice of words were emotive in the lead up would be an understatement as he went on the record saying "they (East Point) won't be able to get away with what they have over recent weeks."

The tale of the tape would later confirm Macartney's due diligence to be on point as the Roosters went on to dismantle the inform Kangas by 41 points.

Expect much of the same on the resistance front from the proud Roosters despite being well shy of the personnel that got it done last time.

McCartney will have the plan to find a way, it will all be about execution and accountability.

Let's not forget the Roosters have lost just two games this year and went within a goal of Melton at MacPherson Park. 

It seems they're flying under the radar at the moment, having not played a top five side since the May 11th loss to Sunbury.

The Roosters’ next big test under McCartney has arrived.

Can they deny the Kangas who average 73 points per game against top five opposition, while North Ballarat average 51.

Plenty will be asked of the Roosters’ defence (comp rank #3) to hold out a rampant Kangas front half (comp rank #3) combo who boast four of the competitions top 20 goalkickers.

Evidently, North Ballarat has just the two (Ned Nash 18 goals, comp rank #10 and Hugh Trigg 13, #14) given the likely absence of Jamie Quick (ankle).

If that wasn't enough for the Roosters to worry about, the ability of the Kangas’ midfield to push forward and hit the scoreboard comparatively speaking, is compelling.

Enough at least to favour Carmody's visiting party getting the job done.

Ballarat will look to consolidate their sixth spot on the BFNL table when they host ninth placed Sebastopol.

Not dissimilar to last year, the gap between the Swans’ best and worse remains an ongoing variable for coach Chris Maple to navigate. And mark my words, despite the Swans superior ladder position, this match up looms every bit a danger game.

The Swans vulnerabilities are not new for Maple, he knows better than anyone where his team is at.

In fact, the former Footscray VFL Premiership Coach is probably happy the Swans are in the six given the season sample size gives every indication the top five have a bit on the rest.

It's all about continuing to develop with the potential of a finals berth up for grabs, and what an experience that would be for his group.

Five of the Swans’ eight remaining games are against teams outside the six, suggesting the likelihood of playing finals is a live proposition.

A win for the Swans on their home deck over the Burra will be crucial to their chances but easier said than done.

The arrival of Winter usually coincides with a spike in impact from the bigger bodied, more experienced players.

Burras quintet Tony Lockyer, Luke Kiel, Daniel Widgery, Bailey Medwell and Ryan Noether are largely responsible for the advantage over the Swans in key areas, namely inside 50's, contested possessions, ground ball gets and overall clearances including at ball-ups.

Sure, the Swans have the Burra covered in the numbers around marking but with the decline in weather and recent departure of Rhett Montgomery who was averaging 14 marks per game, the aerial advantage is less of a concern.

The Burra must deliver on the pressure witnessed in their Round 8 loss to Darley and for periods shown against Sunbury last week and somehow manufacture a way to score.

Yes, the Burra have been kept to under 30 points, three times already this season (Ballarat twice) but all were against top four opposition.

There's no denying the Swans hold the advantage on the scoring front averaging two goals more per game while conceding 10 points less.

However, I’m tipping an upset in a low scoring game amid chilly conditions, despite the fact the Swans haven't lost a game to any side below them.

The Cobras host the Lions in another cracking match up locked in for Round 10.

Both sides have three wins to date, all against the bottom three sides. Trying to find a winner has come down to its geographic location in the end given very little separates the two on paper.

Ironically the two sides’ last success came on the same day back in Round 6 adding yet another like-for-like stat into the equation. 

Expect only a couple of targeted match ups in the lead up.

Experienced Lions’ defender Jacob Werts is almost certain to go to Jake Owen at the opening bounce - that makes total sense.

But who will the Cobras hierarchy send to mark Lions’ star recruit Lachie Bond who prepares for his second game after a lengthy lay off with a foot complaint.

Bond booted two goals in his Lions debut last week and featured in the best players with limited opportunities.

So, what to make of the numbers alone, establishing a 'favorite' heading into this 50/50 encounter?

Bacchus Marsh lead Redan in all areas of disposals, marks, general play including contested ball, pressure and scoring with the exception of only three KPI's albeit a bare minimum disadvantage - namely inside 50's 44-45, tackles 58-62 and centre clearances 11-12.

Lions’ midfielder Khy Jess is the classic accumulator beyond his years.

In just his first full year out of the GWV Rebels program, the progressive left footer is averaging 20 disposals per game, 12 contested including six clearances and six inside 50s.

It would be an entertaining watch seeing Jess and similar age profile Cobras opponent Josh Huxtable go head to head.

Huxtable, like Jess is just one of a host of young talent expected on display, each backed by an integral core of experience.

Given the more experienced names of both sides are the ones we see featuring among the best players more often than not, this result is likely to come down to the output and impact of the next gen stocks.

Line in the sand game for me. If either of these sides want to pinch the (likely) sixth spot at the business end, winning this match is a massive step in the right direction.

Come 5pm Saturday each team will have played each other once, giving supporters a true indication of where their club is at on the BFNL table as we pass the halfway mark of the season.

The Swans will enjoy a return to their own deck and a match-up against similar opposition when they host the Cobras.

Both sides, clearly aware of where they're at, will be eyeing a potential eighth place finish on the table - essentially the 'next best' below the main body of teams.

Tipping there won't be much in this game at the end, but the home ground advantage must lean to the Swans on the back of their 26-point win over Sunbury in Round 9.

Matchups won't be too difficult for either side to ascertain given the stand-out consistencies from both teams top end talent.

Swans’ mid Wil Liston proved he was not out of place at Interleague level, especially with an inspirational second quarter that helped the BFNL back into the game, turning a quarter time deficit into a half time advantage against the talented Hampden League.

Bacchus Marsh too had a sole representative, Jack Parente, who was appointed vice-captain behind Redan star Izaac Grant.

Parente, a co-captain of the Cobras at just 20 years old was similarly courageous as Liston over his high minutes game in defence.

The Swans will need a match-up for Jake Owen (16 goals) as the Cobras will Andrew Hooper (26 goals).

The dual in the ruck between Luke Goetz and Michael Powling should be a ripper while at ground level, Swans youngsters Liston and Paddy Simpson go to head-to-head with more seasoned bodies in Jake McCreery and Tyson Shea.

If both sides can nullify avenues to goal, this game will come down to the second tier of options getting it done on the scoreboard and weight of forward 50 entries.

It builds to be a close one, where both sides will have their chances and look the winner at some stage.

All signs point to Redan being a game clear, entrenched in the final six after a successful visit to Melton South this weekend.

While the Lions have lost two of their last three, their win on the road over Darley in Round 10 gave every indication they're a genuine part of the finals conversation.

With Lachie George, Lachie McLean, Liam Hoy and Harry Lawson still to return, the Lions best bares no ceiling passing the halfway mark of the season. Given their proven depth quality, it really is soldier in, soldier out for the Lions at the moment.

Under new coach Gary Learmonth, Redan have two wins against top six opposition (Darley, East Point) and five wins for the season. A sixth win looms against the winless Panthers.

The hosts will have enjoyed last week’s selection and efforts of Cody Chapman and Mitch Fino in the newly introduced Under 23 Interleague concept under Carlton great Anthony Koutoufides.

Both boys validated their call-ups with contributions worthy of radar attention from opposition clubs moving forward - a timely boost in an otherwise long season for the Panthers.

Take your pick of who may get off the leash in front of goal for the Lions, it could be any of Izaac Grant, Grant Bell, Will Madden or Marty Boyer.

Scoop’s tip: Redan

Despite two losses on the bounce heading in, expect Sunbury to resemble some form closer to their best when they return home to meet East Point.

The Lions will be buoyed with the return of inspirational leader Tyson Lever (foot) and midfielder Mitch Lewis (overseas), not to mention a rejuvenated half dozen Under 23 BFNL representatives from last week’s success over the Hampden League.

Yes, Fraser Ampulski, Jake Egan, Jake Sutton, Harrison Minton-Connell, Cody Brand and Riley Miller all played significant roles in the league's meritorious 16-point win.

Not to be outdone, East Point duo Liam Canny and Liam Howard also featured prominently in the result.

The return of Lewis, joining Minton-Connell and Josh Guthrie in the middle provides every chance for the Lions to take it up against the class of the Johnston brothers, Matty and Jordy, and the crumbing ability of Joe Dodd who has worked his way back into some good form after missing early with injury.

It wouldn't be a surprise if the Kangas did get the job done, you're never sure what version of Sunbury you're going to get.

The visitors are more than capable of kicking a winning score on the road despite the new full time midfield role for proven goalkicker Jordy Johnston.

The Kangas have five players with 10 goals or more already in 2023 (20-B.Whittaker, 16-L.Canny, 13-J.Jeffrey, 11-B.McDougall, 10-J.Merrett) while the Lions just three (23-J.Sutton, 15-C.Brand, 12-L.Brennan).

Strangely, on the confidence taken by those six Lions interleague reps and performances along with the returns of Lever and Lewis, that alone is enough to sway the advantage in favour of the home side. Just.

Scoop’s tip: Sunbury

The Burra won't have a better opportunity downing the wounded Devils at the Den when the two sides meet for the first time since Round 1 last year.

Last time around it was the highly touted Burra losing to the 2021 wooden spooners, a completely unexpected result despite the Devils’ off-season appointment of experienced coach Dan Jordan.

Theorising just how the Devils can get it done is trumped by the strength and quality of depth the previous two-time runners up possess.

Expect Burra quartet Tony Lockyer, James Keeble, Ryan Noether and Grady Snowden to return after missing their Round 10, 27-point win over Sunbury.

How Darley can find a way through Sebastopol's #1 ranked defence will be Jordan's greatest challenge.

Only Melton (four times), North Ballarat and Ballarat have had their way with the Burra over their previous 20 games. The form reads a treat and holds up against any opposition that is not Melton.

Lockyer, Riley O'Keefe, Luke Kiel, Jack Bambury, Hugo Papst and Graydn Snowden make up an enviable back six for any side in regional Victoria let alone the BFNL.

The Devils look a mile off their drought breaking, Round 8 winning performance over Melton on June 3rd.

Some may have thought 'mountain peak' conquered - a short sighted reality to the fact they're merely at base camp as subsequent defeats to North Ballarat and Redan have proven.

The timing of the Devils return to full health will go a long way determining their reach in 2023, but a win against the odds, ahead of schedule will only enhance belief.

On the flipside, a win for the visitors consolidates second position on the ladder with games against Lake Wendoure and Melton South to follow.  

Scoop’s tip: Sebastopol

Reigning premiers Melton will have played one game in 35 days when they host Lake Wendouree this weekend.

But don't let that confuse you, coach Aaron Tymms will have warmed to the break, giving his 'niggle effected' charges enough rest to take on a back-to-back flag mission, replicating East Point's 2018-19 achievement.

The Bloods monstered the Swans in Round 10 with the inclusions of star duo Brenton Payne and Jack Watkins for their first games of the season.

It's unsure when they'll be seen again due to their Port Melbourne and North Melbourne VFL commitments but the Bloods on the whole look back to their best.

We're likely to see confirmation again of that nature against the Lakers. Bloods duo Brady Rowles and Adrian Monitto are not far off a return and could be nursed back for a hit-out as early as the Lakers game after lengthy layoffs.

Young guns Kyle Borg and Conrad Farrugia should be brimming with confidence after solid performances at Interleague level representing the Bloods and will look to carry that form into the latter half of the season while the Lakers’ sole selection Flynn Loader looked dangerous for the BFNL in the front half to warrant a match-up for Tymms.

The Lakers’ faithful will be looking forward to observing the progression of young bigmen duo Felix Fogarty and Tom Zampatti.       

Weather will determine degrees of separation on the scoreboard but if the Lakers were to come close to halving the margin from their most recent encounter, coach Tim Shearer would have been privy to some resistance from his group.

Scoop’s tip: Melton

A number of big clashes await in Round 11 with teams striving for a finals berth set to test themselves against genuine September outfits.

If it's any consolation for the Lions ahead of the weekend, they'll face a Bloods outfit a handful shy of their best 22 with Riley Walker (jaw) and Jordy Cotter (ankle) the latest pairing set for a stint on the sidelines.

While it's clear the top five sides have a clear edge on the remaining six, one spot in the finals is up for grabs.

Given that very little percentage separates those in the running for sixth, Redan won't be rolling over easily and will take it up to the flag favorites for periods.

Can the Lions get bang for buck for their forward 50 entries in the absence of Riley Walker and Cotter?

Grant Bell is on a ten-game stretch returning multiple goals while newcomer and Geelong VFL listed talent Lachie Bond will provide a headache for the Bloods’ defence.

Marty Boyer and Lachie McLean are not shy around goal either and will keep the visitors honest.

Despite injuries to a key few, the Bloods remain the team to beat regardless of any BFNL opposition.

The emotional toll of last week’s nail-biting win over Sunbury can play out in two ways.

One, they're well on the way to at least another minor premiership and no team will stand in their way - or two, there is a chance of a flat performance given the nature of what has transpired.

Whatever the scenario, you would be brave to tip against them.

Not me.

The winless Panthers will endure the second of back-to-back top five assignments when they host North Ballarat at Melton Recreation Reserve.

Both sides have had their fair share of bad luck on the injury front and will look for a response from their respective depth stocks who will be given an opportunity.

Star North Ballarat midfielder Riley Polkinghorne suffered a nasty ankle injury in the second quarter of last week’s loss to East Point and is set for a period on the sidelines, joining fellow playmakers Jamie Quick and Tom Bromley-Lynch.

Credit to the undermanned Roosters hitting the front against East Point in the last quarter before the Kangas were able to steady and kick away late.

While the absence of Polkinghorne will not affect this coming result, the nature of the predicted percentage boost may have taken a hit.

Just 'how far the Roosters?' has been quelled somewhat with the absence of key personnel.

Travis Hodgson's Panthers showed a bit last week against the Devils with their 'top end' players all making a contribution leading one of the youngest sides seen in the BFNL for sometime.

And they will need to produce again to avoid a 20-goal plus defeat.

Even with injury, you know what you're going to get from the Roosters - a feverish appetite for the contest and a well-structured set-up behind the ball that makes it hard for opposition to score.

Given the Panthers’ average less than 30 points per game, surpassing that return will be a challenge.  

Roosters’ coach Brendan McCartney will be hoping to get through unscathed and be looking for his players to develop on good habits ahead of the back end of the season when everything starts to heat up.

Sunbury head to Ballarat for a fourth time already this season, to take on the Swans at Alfredton Oval.

Lions coach Matty White would have been proud of his boys last week despite their narrow loss at home to Melton in arguably the best game of the year.

So, for the touring party it's not about rebounding or a response needed against the Swans, rather more of the same that has earned them an impressive seven win season and third spot on the BFNL ladder.

There's enough body of work seen from the Lions giving every indication they're the real deal and you know what you're going to get.

With the off-season addition of quality personnel and spike in performance of players who were already at Sunbury, the future looks bright - not dissimilar to the age profile of Melton that took them to the 2018 Grand Final before the crowning glory achievement of 2022.

For Chris Maple's Ballarat another challenge in the form of top five opposition presents and what an opportunity that is in front of home fans - a chance to measure yourselves against the pointy end.

So far for the Swans however, the challenge has proven beyond them.

Some mini-wins here at home will be the order of the day starting with the one non-negotiable - effort.

For without effort, surely the balance sheet of potential mini wins becomes null and void.

The Swans sit in sixth spot on the ladder with an asterix of vulnerability next to their name.

They along with Redan, Bacchus Marsh and Sebastopol are in a fight for the elusive sixth spot.

If the Swans want to rid themselves of the asterix and potentially making up the numbers come September, an honourable loss is the least we can ask of a group not shy on talent.

Don't expect Darley to have it all their own way when they host the Lakers on Saturday.

Rival coaches have gone on the record complimenting the one-win Lakers on their endeavour for long periods that culminated with an impressive 174-point win over Melton South in Round 9.

Rohan Brown's travelling party will be looking for further improvement off the bye, up against top four opposition.

While it's never really a good time to get Darley at Darley given their recent home record, coach Dan Jordan would be the first to concede the Devils have a bit of work to do recapturing the aura of last year.

So regardless of the two sides separation on the BFNL table, weight of progress will surely be measured in the aftermath.

Just what that looks like for Brown and Jordan is likely to remain 'in-house' but for those of us on the outside, the scoreboard will tell enough.

Did the Melton South game flatter the Lakers? They looked very good on the vision, playing a large part of the group into form for an assignment against a Devils outfit still trying to find their best.

Containing the Devils’ top end talent will be an afternoon long struggle for the developing Lakers who should embrace the experience.

While Brett Bewley and Billy Myers are the obvious trump cards expected to have the greatest influence, Jordan's challenge remains getting a deeper spread of contributors, preferably out of the Devils’ 'bottom half'.

The Lakers’ talls will keep the Devils honest.

Tom Zampatti, Jaydyn Wright and Felix Fogarty make up a healthy spine through the middle and forward of the ball.

Hybrid forward and Lakers’ leading goalkicker Bailey Thompson keeps hitting the scoreboard regardless of the opposition and is likely to have earned the respect out of the Devils’ camp with a designated match up.

Not sure what version we're going to get of these two sides. Darley will surely do enough, but how far?

Will the Devils impress with a tick forward in the right direction or can the Lakers back up their recent efforts by keeping the margin in check, something they've failed to do at Darley Park their previous two visits.

The Kangas will start warm favorites making it nine wins in a row when they host the Cobras at Eastern Oval.

It's been six years since the Cobras have enjoyed success at the venue and given the sample size of the season to date, don't expect the pattern to change.

The Cobras’ slim chances hang on the availability of premier ruck Luke Goetz who is a genuine barometer for the team, leading with his positivity by voice and proud example with action.

A tough afternoon looms for the Cobras given the depth of talent and form held by the hosts. Just who you target with a match up or run with role is a guess given they've up to 10 players worthy of thought.

The Kangas’ midfield bats as deep as any in the comp and will look to assume control early against a Cobras’ outfit without veteran Tyson Shea and Goetz (doubtful).

The Johnston brothers, Mikitja Rottumah-Onus lead a healthy band at the feet of underrated competitor Joel Van Meel who continues to hold his own for long periods in the ruck with barely a rest.

As if the Cobras’ concerns weren't restricted to the A-Grade midfield talent of the Kangas, the make-up of the hosts forward line poses another quandary for Dennis Armfield and his staff.

Given the plentiful assets at Kangas’ coach Joe Carmody's disposal, maybe Armfield goes down the track of using Saturday as another opportunity to shuffle the magnets, a variation on what we already know.

Maybe there's a better version of the Cobras best 22 and their most suitable positions. Who knows?

What we do know however, is that the Cobras will be stretched by the Kangas to the point where the touring party is left with little choice but to experiment.

Finding the right combination for the Cobras to score, defend and maintain possession between the arcs remains a work in progress jigsaw.

While it's likely the Kangas winning run will continue for at least another week, let's hope for Cobras fans it's an encouraging step in the right direction on the development front.

As we head into the abbreviated second round of matches, the bottom five sides get another opportunity on Saturday to measure progress on their first meet with a cheeky eye on manufacturing a major upset against five sides currently inside the top six.

The Cobras owe coach Jason Williams and their fans a buy-in this week when they host competition benchmark Melton at Maddingley Park.

When you're not expected to win, you can go about the task in two ways - accept the likelihood of defeat and play accordingly or 'dig in' and have a crack. At least, provide some resistance with a pride in the jumper performance.

The Cobras effort won't be judged on win or loss, for the Bloods have won 30 of their last 34 games, an amazing achievement.

For the same period the Cobras have won 13. So even with their backs to the wall, the Cobras can impact.

Win a quarter or win a half will be the 'real' expectations on the Cobras who are likely to play in front of a big crowd.

It's the perfect segue ahead of the clubs Round 13 local derby against Darley.

The Cobras top end talent would surely get a game with the powerhouse Bloods so it's not beyond the realms of possibility the hosts can push the ladder leaders for a half as they did against Sunbury in Round 7, when they led by four points at the half.

Melton on the other hand are cruising and will look to put this game to bed early. Their benchmark status has proven intimidating for struggling teams allowing Aaron Tymms’ boys more often a win on their own terms far too soon.

Given the stark contrast of fortunes of these two sides, it's difficult to mount a case for the winless Panthers making an impression on the fifth placed Lions at Clarke Oval.

The rejuvenated Lions returned to their best last week with an 80-point thumping of East Point and welcomed the return of top end talent duo Tyson Lever and Mitch Lewis.

And don't underestimate the confidence build of no less than six Lions who featured at Interleague level a fortnight ago - all made significant contributions in the win over the Hampden League.

That theory was confirmed immediately after strong performances against the Kangas from Harry Minton-Connell, Jake Sutton (five goals) and Cody Brand.

Unfortunately for the Panthers there'll be nowhere to hide on the wide expanses of the Clarke Oval.

Expect the Lions leg speed advantage on the spread to equate to scores the longer this game goes.

Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse for the Panthers on the injury front, the loss of inspirational leader Cody Chapman (hamstring) only compounds the situation and heightens the degrees of difficulty avoiding a loss in excess of three figures.

Who gets the job for the Panthers on dangerous Lions forward Jake Sutton makes for interesting discussion in the aftermath.

Keeping the Essendon VFL listed talent to eight goals will be a fair effort given a genuine lack of depth at the Panthers and the likelihood of a landslide in forward 50 entries.

Scoop’s tip: Sunbury

Swans coach Chris Maple and his young group have an opportunity to correct on its disappointing Round 6 loss when they meet North Ballarat at Mars Stadium this Saturday.

While most have the Swans winning chances slim at best, Maple can take some confidence into the game knowing his boys have won three of their last four games, including a top six scalp with a win over Sunbury.

The trip to Mars Stadium looms a timely footy audit for the Swans, a real chance to measure improvement against one of the best 'home' performing sides of the last three seasons.

Brendan McCartney's 14-3 record at 'Mars' since taking the reins at North Ballarat in 2021 is impressive and is likely to remain in good stead.

It makes you wonder if McCartney and North Ballarat really needed the bye last week, for they were flying.

No doubting they would have been well educated over the break for an assault on the back half of the season, so look for the Roosters to start well as they so often do.

For the Swans, believe, hang in and assess at the break. Where to start the match-up conversation for Maple's hierarchy is an unknown given the Roosters VFL player affiliations. Maybe adopt McCartney's theory that "matchups are a thing of the past".

Spend more time trying to win the game than saving is easier said than done. Tipping North Ballarat to be very hard to beat for the remainder of the season.  

Scoop’s tip: North Ballarat

East Point will look to bounce back when they head to City Oval for a meeting with legitimate finals contender Redan.

It was said some weeks ago, seven teams don’t go into six finals places, so one of these teams will have to miss out.

But when you look into the draw, the Kangas have so much more at stake.

After this weekend, the Lions have, on paper, the pick of the draws with North Ballarat, Lake Wendouree, Ballarat, Melton South and Sebastopol to come, essentially just two meetings with top six sides.

The Kangas on the other hand have Melton, Ballarat, Sebastopol, Lakers and North Ballarat, three of your current top six meets.

Getting it done on Saturday will be an ideal launching pad for Jackson Merrett's crew who sit a game and percentage outside the six.

The potential fall-out with finals chances on the line will be dealt a severe blow in the event of loss. But they're more than blessed with the talent to overcome the Lions despite their 13-point loss on Eastern Oval back in Round 6.

Merrett will have had little time for learnings on last week’s defeat against Sunbury given the nature of the loss and may have afforded his boys a 'mulligan' for indifferent performances from a young group are seldomly avoided.

The top end talent at the Kangas led by the Johnston brothers will need to be at their best to topple the mounting depth of the Lions.

Containing in-form Redan duo Isaac Grant and Marty Boyer who combined for 34 shots on goal last week would be a good place to start.

While the result for many looms inevitable, there's still plenty to gain for warm favorites Sebastopol when they face the one-win Lakers at Marty Busch Reserve.

Sure, the Burra have only lost three games for the season but recently they give every indication they're shy of their best.

Luke Kiel and Michael Columbro's men have won just one quarter in each of their games against fellow top six opposition Darley (loss), Redan (win), North Ballarat (loss) and Melton (loss).

Exceptions lie only in their three-quarter win over Sunbury and their 'hang on' win against Redan. But you get the drift, wanting more from the highly talented Burra.

And they're more than capable. In fact, a drought breaking premiership would not surprise and getting back to resembling the best version of themselves could be kick started this weekend.

Conditions didn't help last week against the Devils in fairness, but what else can you expect from weather in July.

Expect a steely focus from the visitors today and added buy-in from the players sounding a clear warning to the Lakers - be prepared! 

Staying in the game for the home side will be easier said than done but an improvement on their 15 point tally in Round 6 is a must, a mini win if you will given the final margin is likely to favour the visitors, comfortably.

The action is back after the interleague weekend and sides will have their sights firmly locked on to the backend of the 2024 season.

Plenty will need to go right for Sunbury avoiding a fourth loss in five games when they face Melton for a second time in 21 days.

Who could forget the nailbiting conclusion of their Round 10 meet at the Clarke Oval when Bloods' wingman Kyle Borg put the flag favorites in front just moments ahead of the final siren?

It's hard to push the argument that any have in fact, paving the way for a highly anticipated sequel.

It's often thought the sequel rarely usurps the original but the BFNL Match of the Round crew will be there to bring you all the action LIVE from 2pm Saturday.

While Bloods' defender Riley Walker is expected to return, intercept king Jordy Cotter (foot/ankle) will continue his rehab with an aim to return ahead of finals.

On the flipside, Sunbury have had a relatively good run with injury up until their Round 8 loss to East Point and have had to shuffle the magnets since which has been unsettling, equating to three losses from their last four games.

The Lions most recent 22-point loss to the Swans was no fluke when you look at the numbers in isolation.

Sunbury were beaten in near all KPI's and denied their usual uncontested brand - 51 uncontested marks (down 29 on their season average), marks inside 50 (down 6 ), disposals (down 46), clearances (-16),centre clearance (-8), inside 50s (-25), tackles (-25).

Well done Chris Maple pulling a rabbit out of a hat with all respect, given it was the first win for any side outside of the top five against top five opposition.

The win / loss record for bottom six teams v top five teams is now W1 L29.

A correction from the Lions camp on the numbers front will NOT necessarily guarantee Matt White's pride a winning result against a steely Melton combination that will ask questions of the entire group with and without the ball.

Not dissimilar to Round 10, Sunbury will have their opportunities but can they match the ladder leaders with bang for buck hitting the scoreboard?

Tipping you'll see a host of defenders featuring in the best for the winners, denying potential match winning forwards a day out on their own terms.

The one-win Lakers should hold little or no fears facing the Cobras at Maddingley Park if the last six weeks represents an adequate sample size.

Both sides had their respective first round bye and have won six of their last 20 quarters, four of those coming against bottom side Melton South.

The Lakers, like the Cobras, have just the one win for the period but have a slight percentage edge (72% v 64% last six weeks) adding some weight to the 'winning chance' conversation, albeit on the road.

The Cobras learnt quickly of the importance of big man Luke Goetz (ankle) in his recent absence.

While a return is predicted by some this week, it's far from set in concrete.

Veteran mid Tyson Shea will miss again asking more questions of a young Cobras midfield still finding their way.

I like the thought of dual Cobra BFNL Interleague representatives Isaac Nixon and Rhy Penny up onto a wing in a change up with ferocious leader and coach Dennis Armfield to spend some time behind the ball getting a birds-eye view how his chargers go about it.

Nixon and Penny are fresh off 19 disposal, confidence building performances against the Hampden League and would provide the necessary aerial presence and run with and without the ball to impact this game - shoring up the side gates if you will with a 'Beware of’ sign.  

Needless to add a lot of the Cobras fortunes will rest on the returns of ever consistent forward Jake Owen (23 goals, comp rank #8, in best 6/10 games). Expect Brayden Helyar to get the job.

The Lakers have some aerial presence of their own and will be tough to hold out if conditions suit.

Jaydo Wright, Felix Fogarty, Tom Zampatti, Ben Hayes and leading goalkicker Bailey Thompson (22 goals, comp rank #10) can all take a grab and provide an avenue to score.

Joel O'Connell, Angus Gove, rebound defender Kyle Anderson and exciting 16-year-old Lincoln Koliba will ensure the Cobras are made to earn a fourth win of the season. 

In a 50/50 game, geography had the final say given the Lakers’ struggles away from home.

The Lakers have lost their last 11 games on the road by an average of 74 points including a 92-point defeat here last year.

If Darley has any legitimate aspirations for a top three finish, a win over North Ballarat is a must.

The Devils will have every opportunity getting the job done over a touring party minus a handful of prime movers including x-factor forward Jamie Quick (ankle) and midfield duo Riley Polkinghorne (ankle) and Brock Leonard (concussion) who have proven a mainstay in pressure and accumulation numbers with and without the ball.

Former Cobra Joel Freeman is expected to debut in Roosters colors having just beat the clearance deadline and will provide a dual pronged aerial target alongside Stewart Crameri (1 game, 2 goals) and opportune forward Ned Nash (20 goals, comp rank #11).

Just how the Roosters find a way denying in form Devils midfield trio Brett Bewley, Luther Baker and Matt Denham will be an afternoon long problem for Brendan McCartney and his support staff.

Bewley and Baker especially feature among the top five ball winners in the comp and should thrive in the absence of Polkinghorne and Leonard.

McCartney has little alternative but to focus on the 'what haves' and will need his boys to deliver on their trademark pressure if they're to overcome the Devils who would be well aware of the importance banking the win given remaining 'double up' matches against top three giants East Point, Sunbury and Melton are still to come.

While it will be a 'one week at a time' mission for Dan Jordan and his crew finding their best, there's no denying the Devils top three chances hang in the balance for the here and now.

For North Ballarat, given their 'outs', a win would surely be their most satisfying and deserving of the season, whilst leaving the door ajar on a potential top three finish of their own.

Key Roosters Tom Bromley-Lynch, Simon McCartin and Cam McCallum are expected to return while Devils trio Wil Johnson, Adam Azzopardi and Mitch Ward continue their rehab on the sidelines for at least another week.

The Kangas would have fond memories of their last meet against the Burra, a Round 3 encounter that essentially kickstarted their impressive nine game winning streak.

A six-goals-to-one second half under the lights at Eastern Oval was enough to instill the belief and momentum in Joe Carmody's group that sees them now just percentage shy of ladder leaders Melton.

So why the dominance?

The Kangas’ numbers reel ahead of the 'double ups' is compelling, enough to see them with their best chance of winning a flag since their back-to-back achievement of 2018 and 2019.

Carmody's marching band rank #1 for scoring efficiency, centre clearances, groundball gets, marks inside 50 and behinds - rank #2 for kicks, contested possessions, overall clearances, spoils, goals - rank #3 for handballs, contested marks, marks, ball-up clearances, forward 50 tackles, disposal efficiency (kicks and handballs) and rank #4 for disposals.

Pretty impressive, not to mention five players in the top 27 goalkickers including two of the top nine - Bryson McDougall (36 goals, rank #3) and Strahan Robinson (23 goals, rank #9).

So where do you start when you're Burra coach Tony Lockyer trying to tame the flying Kangaroos when one of the biggest struggles of your own team has been scoring?

Well Lockyer is an experienced leader who will narrow the focus of importance. Given where the two teams are at in the context of their respective seasons, Lockyer will be looking for a simple buy-in on the process, hopeful a response from his group will equate to having in them in with a prize fighters chance at three quarter time.

Falling shy of the necessary buy-in would see the Kangas waltz on their merry way to a comfortable tenth win and remain on track for an all-important double chance amid a very even season at the top.

A cracking game looms at City Oval with the result almost certain to play a role shaping the final six even this far out.

While the thought of finals will be underplayed by these two respective coaches, the lure of the number six spot in the September action will not be denied by fans.

Sure, the two opponents are in the development phase given their age profile but that hasn't stopped the Swans causing the upset of the season to date as recent as Round 11 over third placed Sunbury.

But, as has been the case for a large portion of the season, the Swans’ ability to back up their solid efforts from quarter to quarter let alone game to game has been an ongoing challenge for coach Chris Maple.

For Swans fans, let's hope the win over the Sunbury Lions proves a line in the sand moment and the beginning of something resembling closer to the cliche ambition of consistency.

Hosts Redan today are 0-6 against top six opposition with all four of their season wins coming against the current bottom four. The importance of a win today, bucking the trend would be an understatement and not beyond reach of the Lions. 

The similarities between the two sides around scoring set the tone for another nailbiter despite the Swans having won an extra game and a 10 percent advantage on the BFNL table.

Redan have had two shots more on goal for the season, averaging 4.4 points more per game confirming the like-for-like match up.

The Swans (17.5/40) have won half a quarter more than the Lions while conceding an average of 15.6 points less per game.

All relevant numbers given each team in the BFNL has played each other once.

Looking forward to the battle of the midfield brigades.

If Lions’ pairing Khy Jess and Lachie George can turn their high number territory gains into score involvements, the hosts will prove a handful.

Who will Maple send to GFL listed player Lachie Bond? Angus Bade looks a likely match-up allowing attacking defender Lachie Dalgleish to play a role in the genesis of transition.

Trying conditions are expected, a challenging day for all – both on field and for the decision makers off it.

As the number suggests, Round 13 may prove unlucky for some, with a number of games looking capable of an upset.

The underdogs can take it up to their more fancied opponents for periods, but for how long looms their greatest challenge. 

Ballarat's upset win over Sunbury in Round 9 has added some intrigue to this battle. The Swans remain the pests in the comp shaping the top eight for their best is good enough and proven upset material.

But you can guarantee, Lions coach Travis Hodgson will have done his homework ensuring a 0-2 head to head v lowly Ballarat does not eventuate.

They may have to plan without their VFL affiliates Jack Newitt (Northern Bullants), Jake Sutton (Essendon) and Harry Minton-Connell (Essendon) whose rich vein of recent form has warranted selection at the higher level over the last month.

The Swans were simply too honest for Sunbury at their first meeting - Will Liston, Paddy Simpson and Marcus Powling especially don't play bad games and with the return of Daniel Kennedy, and usual threat of forward Andrew Hooper (33 goals) the visitors will arrive with confidence embracing the underdog tag.

Let's not forget only a week ago at three-quarter time these young Swans under Chris Maple were within 12 points of North Ballarat at Mars Stadium before discipline proved their undoing, conceding the last four goals of the game via free kicks.

Both sides boast promising depth, and it would be nice to see them hang on for another crack given the Lions debuted four players last week.

Not to be outdone the Swans had five players still eligible for the Under 19s take on Brendan McCartney’s Roosters, limiting them to 11 goals despite a 39-point loss.

If the Lions are fair dinkum, they should win, and win well at home against the eighth placed Swans.

Deny the visitors a sniff early and the Lions will be on their way. However, in the event of the door being left slight ajar, beware the momentum of youth.

Scoop’s tip: Sunbury

The Burra have an opportunity to fine tune their touch, selflessness and game plan when they take on the embattled Panthers whose season can't come to an end quick enough.

Unfortunately for the hosts, it's the painful reality of a season gone awry for various reasons.

Credit to coach Ryan Hoy who has stuck with the club since his move from St Kilda City in the off-season to endure the battle.

And this match-up won't be any easier for them when they take on Sebastopol who are still yet to settle on its own version of their best 22.

No doubt we'll see a few Burras players impact the scoreboard, like many have been able to do against the Panthers this year who average 176 points against per game.

With the result looming foregone, dual Burra coaching duo Luke Kiel and Michael Columbro will have their fingers crossed their group gets through unscathed after losing quality mid Lachie Cassidy to a recurring low grade hamstring strain. 

Burra forwards Toby Hutt, James Keeble and new edition Jay Dalhaus should enjoy a day out before a like-for-like match up awaits with North Ballarat in Round 14.

Scoop’s tip: Sebastopol

Redan missed a golden opportunity last week to go two games and percentage clear of East Point (7th) earning vital separation inside the top six.

But credit to the Kangas, they were far too good and find themselves within less than 1% of Redan.

So again, the pressure is on the Lions to deliver at home, this time against North Ballarat.

The Roosters remaining five games see them come up against team all in the top seven equation, so don't expect the visitors to be taking their foot off the pedal as they an eye an all-important top three finish.

Trying to make excuses for the Lions’ failings last week with arguably their best side in is perplexing.

Maybe their block of games with a young group going back to Round 5 had taken its toll - Melton, East Point, Sunbury, Sebastopol, Darley, Melton South and then the Kangas again.

It’s a tough stretch that continues with a showdown against Brendan McCartney's army who held off the Lions at their earlier meet at Mars Stadium by 13 points - their narrowest win at home for the season.

Redan coach Gary Learmonth will have conceded a forgiving run last week with an eye toward the next challenge. For the record, the Lions three wins at home at this season have come against bottom four sides.

McCartney on the otherhand will be fully aware of his own teams’ challengers en route to finals and will look to make it a seventh win on the trot.

The Roosters’ VFL affiliates are playing well at the higher level and are unlikely for an immediate return, providing the underdog Lions with a realistic 'throw at the stumps' chance. 

Redan's best is good enough, but we don't see it often enough and with North's emphasis on contested ball and tackling, questions will surely be asked of Learmonth's young group.  

Scoop’s tip: North Ballarat

For all of Melton’s ten wins so far in 2023, their eight-point win over East Point in Round 7 was in fact their narrowest and should give visiting coach Jackson Merrett no reason to fear the reigning premiers.

Furthermore, the Kangas have led the benchmark Bloods at halftime in five of their last six meets and will be wanting for a repeat of that pattern given the context of their season.

Merrett's men are just .57% shy of Redan in sixth place and will need a scalp ahead of the business end to feature given the Lions’ softer draw.

The Bloods are gettable, and will this week be shy, again, of their best 22 and scoring potential as Liam Carter and Ryan Davis are expected to miss for a further week.

To put scoring into perspective, the Bloods have two players available with 12 goals or more, Ryan Carter (31) and Braedyn Kight (18) while the Kangas have four, namely Brad Whittaker (23), Liam Canny (18), Jack Jeffrey (16) and Bryson McDougall (16).

Avenues to goal also include playing coach Jackson Merrett’s 11 goals from 7 games and shouldn't be a problem for the visitors nor the midfield battle for the Johnston brothers are more than capable matching it with Jack Walker and Lachie Watkins.

Tipping this game to be decided by a battle of the defences.

The Bloods hold a distinct advantage in this area conceding 65.8 points per game against top seven opposition while the Kangas seemingly have some work to do in this area averaging 90.9 points against.

The Kangas’ midfield must deny the Bloods weight of entries forward to give themselves a chance.

It's proven a half-time lead for the Kangas would not surprise but whether they can hang on over four quarters is another challenge altogether.

The Devils will aim to consolidate its top three credentials with a win over cross town rival Bacchus Marsh.

This season's earlier edition of the local derby saw Dan Jordan's men record a 50-point win with the Devils doing enough without setting the world on fire.

Now 12 rounds in, resembling a better version of themselves will be on Jordan's radar, as the Cobras arrive with all bar Jake Long available.

The Cobras will bring pressure, they often do, and energy on the back of a handful of returning youth from the Coates Talent League.

Fundamentally however, it's the Cobras kicking game on the bigger ground (Darley Park) that looms their greatest cause for concern.

They simply don't kick the ball well, validating the 'scrap' post script nature of many rivals’ coaches.

The Devils have had their own battles over the last month with injury and flat performances but looked more like the 8-2 team example with an encouraging win over Sebastopol in Round 11.

Strange when you hear that the Burra and Melton make up the Devils last two wins. Not many can say that in recent times.       

While the Cobras would have fond memories of their last visit to Darley Park in 2022 that ended in a last gasp one-point win, only five players have been retained from that day.

Darley could have up to 15 representatives from that game. Needless to add the Devils have made substantial gains since, are in the 'double chance' conversation and can't afford to be coughing up this one despite the usual local hype.

A number of heavyweight battles headline Round 13 with plenty of match ups set to determine the look of the ladder as we head into the pointy end of the season.

Despite the anomaly of the Kangas’ Round 1 failings, Joe Carmody's group will start warm favorites turning the tables on the Devils at Eastern Oval.

Since their 96-point wakeup call at Darley Park, the Kangas have taken all before them marching their way through a 10-game winning streak, beating every side bar Dan Jordan's touring party in the process.

For some Kangas, the loss to Darley will be a distant memory but for some it will feel like yesterday given the four-quarter obliteration.

But what a formidable side East Point have become under new season coach Joe Carmody - some rival clubs and players have gone on the record to say they're the best they've seen so far in 2024.

A win for Darley on the road given the form of the Kangas would be arguably Dan Jordan's biggest win outside of finals and the clubs’ seven-year, drought breaking win over Melton in Round 8 last year.

If the 'just going' Devils are still in the game at half time, the numbers suggest their challenges have only just begun.

Post Round 1, East Point's second half returns have been ridiculous.

For third quarters the Kangas are W9-L1 (348-96) averaging near 35 points (for) while conceding less than 10 (9.6) for the period.

Final quarters are just as impressive for the Kangas icing the cake having W9-D1-L0 (298-145), averaging near 30 points (for) and a miserly 14.5 against. The one-sided nature of the Kangas’ second halves equates to W10 L0 (646 pts FOR, 241 pts AGST) - essentially a seven goal advantage.

Darley's task will be made even tougher in the likely absence of star playmaker Billy Myers (calf) who was unsighted after half time in the club’s 12-point win over North Ballarat.

Myers joins Wil Johnson, Adam Azzopardi, Mitch Ward and Jack Bewley on the injury list, an area East Point have been blessed with since the season opener.... until now.

There are concerns for Joe Dodd (dislocated knee), Deng Lual (leg), Geordie Slater (leg) and Strahan Robinson (minor calf) getting up for the BFNL's Match of the Round, leaving the door slightly ajar for the visitors.

I'm not sure the Devils can get it done with their outs, limited avenues to goal and season long struggles for connection unlike their 2023 premiership year, but you can guarantee a Dan Jordan mentored and Brett Bewley (41.8 avg disposals - comp rank #1) led crew will have other ideas.

The Kangas’ top end are all in career best form - Matty Johnston (36 disp avg - comp rank #2), Jordy Johnston (18 goals, 7.4 marks, 6 inside 50s, 10 score involvements), Bryson McDougall (43 goals - comp rank #2), Joel Van Meel (comp rank #1 for hits to advantage 10.8), Jackson Merrett and Jacob Brown (average 17 marks between them in the back half - comp rank #1 and #4 for uncontested marks) and Mikitja Rottumah-Onus (25 disp - 7 clearances).

East Point

A young Roosters outfit will endeavour to end the Bloods’ six game winning streak at Mars Stadium this Saturday as Melton head up the highway.

Brendan McCartney would be the first to concede it’s a mission easier said than done despite the Roosters’ impressive record at home.

Only East Point (twice), Melton and Ballarat have been successful at the venue dating back to the start of 2022.

Unfortunately for McCartney's group, injuries and unavailability of key personnel will make it tough tp deny the Bloods a seventh win on the trot.

It won’t be without some minor concerns for the Bloods with the absence of Jordy Cotter, Jono O'Brien and Ryan Davis.

Not dissimilar to last week, expect North Ballarat to will this game into an arm wrestle for as long as possible and minimise the damage the Bloods can inflict given an (uncontested) game on their own terms.

The Bloods are so well set up behind the ball, structurally sound and thriving in a period 'all on the same page'.

Forward, they're dynamite at the moment, in rare air, posing a five-pronged attack who rarely miss their opportunities.

The Kights, the Carters and (push forward) winger Kyle Borg are finding isolation aerially and at ground level to swoop and score far too easily.

Can McCartney and his band of inexperienced soldiers find a way to stifle a recurrence? I anticipate they will for periods but for the long haul, albeit four quarters will be a tough ask.

The effort the Bloods brought to the table in the last quarter of last week’s 77-point win over Sunbury was that of a team on a mission with an unquestionable work ethic.

There was simply no let up as the Bloods kicked the last four goals of the game to put the icing on the cake.

Their premiership credentials this far out are compelling.

McCartney has been on the record making us acutely aware over recent seasons, around this time, there's still 'a long way to go'.

In fact, Melton had lost just the one game at this stage last year adding a sense of deja vu to the conversation.  

The Bloods won't find it easy to shrug the resistance of the hosts, East Point and Darley more recently can attest to that.

Somehow, undermanned North Ballarat hit the front in the last quarter against the Kangas and were within a goal late of the Devils before falling 'respectfully' short.

Consider the evidence a reminder for Bloods’ coach Troy Scoble who will take no prisoners regardless of opposition or where they're situated on the table - it's all part of rendering the mission complete.

Melton

Sunbury host Redan in a must win game for both clubs given their recent records.

These two sides have lost four of their last five games. Sunbury will be desperate to keep their top three credentials alive while Redan's chances of pinching a spot in the finals action hang by a thread.

In a battle between the Lions in the 'East' and the Lions in the 'West', just who is the hungrier of the two prides and more methodical in the stalking of their prey will surely earn the all-important four premiership points.

With Darley and North Ballarat starting underdogs this round against East Point and Melton respectively it's the ideal opportunity for Sunbury to bounce back.

A win could see the Lions of the 'East' (Sunbury) return into third place come 5pm Saturday, and they should get it done especially on their own territory.

But you can't dismiss the visitors and their agenda with a top six finish still on the cards - just!

Gary Learmonth's group need a win against a team above them if they're to feature.

At the moment seventh placed Redan are W0 L7 against the top six teams. Winning at the Clarke Oval has been a tough assignment for any BFNL touring party regardless of ladder position.

Only Melton (four points) have been successful.

Questions will be asked of Redan as Sunbury welcome back overlap runner and link man Mitch Lewis onto a wing.

Given the size of the Clarke Oval you can't downplay the importance of the wingmen, they're essentially an extension of the midfield.

Expect the former Port Melbourne utility to improve the general makeup of the Sunbury lineup who were without Jack Hannett, Nathan Wood and Jake Egan in last week’s 77-point loss to Melton.

Jordan Tentonello should be fine to go after a 'corky' left him lame on the sidelines for last week’s second half.

Redan's struggles to score are a massive concern given the talent that is in their front half.

The Geelong VFL listed Lachie Bond will appreciate the room at Clarke Oval and be keen for a breakout game alongside more than capable trio Grant Bell, Marty Boyer and Lachie McLean.

Mobile ruckman Rudie Forde is showing great promise and should welcome the big ground giving Khy Jess and Lachie Bond a chance to better a Sunbury midfield that has had its colors lowered in recent weeks against Melton (twice), Ballarat and East Point.

However, I expect in-form Sunbury forwards Jake Sutton and Mitch McLean will prove an afternoon long handful for the Redan defence and arguably the difference in the game come 5pm Saturday.

Bacchus Marsh will look to bounce back to the winner’s list when they travel to Melton South this weekend.

After showing periods of promise equating to three wins from their opening six games, the Cobras remain winless post their bye having lost their last five games.

The recent struggles for the Cobras hitting the scoreboard will give the Panthers a live chance recording their first 'quarter win' of the season.

Ironically, it was against the Cobras last year the Panthers recorded their only 'quarter' win of the season.

Since the Cobras’ Round 7 bye, goal returns of nine, six, eight, three and seven have provided them with little chance acquiring an elusive fourth win.

But the perfect opportunity to buck the trend presents in the form of the winless Panthers who average 150 points against per game.

Expect experienced campaigner and tireless key Jake Owen (25 goals - comp rank #7) to feature despite a deliberate match-up from former coach Travis Hodgson who has huge respect for the former Cobras’ captain.  

The Panthers will be refreshed after a week off and buoyed by the recent contributions of Cody Chapman, Mitch Fino and Broden Collins at interleague level that should instill the group with some confidence to take it up to the struggling Cobras for periods.

While Hodgson looks for mini wins from his embattled group, expectations will be much greater out of the Cobras camp led by playing coach Dennis Armfield.

This Round 13 match-up will provide Armfield with the perfect stage to resemble more of the style of footy he wants his group to play.

Failure here to replicate on a simple plan of demands from the former Carlton AFL utility would compound the recent frustrations for a group not shy on talent or will to play for the jumper.

It's all about regaining continuity and connection for the Cobras this weekend.

A spike in enjoyment levels surely follows with compliance, as process takes care of the result, culminating with an overdue rendition of the victory song in smile and unison.

Forget their Round 1 meeting, Lake Wendouree are in with a real live chance upsetting Sebastopol at CE Brown Reserve.

The Lakers consolidated their recent signs of improvement with a 29-point win over Bacchus Marsh ending an 11-game run of outs on the road.

'Run of outs' is probably an understatement given their average 'away' loss for the period was 74 points.

Welcome back!

Excited Lakers’ coach Rohan Brown will embrace the challenge against a Burras outfit playing above their three-win season return.

After a horror run with injury, Tony Lockyer’s group are beginning to resemble more of the Burra we're familiar with having taken it up to third placed Darley and more recently second placed East Point.

On both occasions, despite eventual loss, the improving Burra have been within striking distance at the final change.

Not to be outdone, the Lakers were within 25 points of the Devils at three quarter time before the reigning premiers corrected their errant ways in front of goal.

Regardless of the final margin the Lakers did crack in which has been a common theme from rival coaches in the aftermath.

The consensus on the Burra has been equally as encouraging, implying Lockyer's group will trouble a few more fancied runners on the way home.

If that is to be the case, you would think a win over a spirited Lakers is more likely than not. But certainly not the 'given' that was expected in Round 1.

Both sides are on the up, disparity far less than we've seen recent years.

The Lakers should hold no fears for the Burra but must learn good habits around repeat efforts from week to week rather than settling for a monthly celebration in song.

It's time to embrace the next level with work rate, buy-in and consistency. The reward is palpable, we saw what it meant for the group last week.

This match will tell us more about the Lakers and their progress. Can they reproduce and raise the bar?

I guarantee Lockyer and Sebastopol will come ready to test the waters...

Sebastopol

As ladder leaders head into Round 14 as favourites, a steely focus is drawn to games set to determine the make-up of the top six with Sebastopol (2nd) hosting North Ballarat (3rd) and East Point (7th) at home to Ballarat (8th).

Given Redan's softer draw on the way home, East Point must win at home against eighth placed Ballarat to keep their finals hopes alive.

The Kangas still have meetings with Sebastopol (H) and North Ballarat (A) to negotiate with on the run home so getting the prized four premiership points here is paramount.

In fairness to East Point (10), come seasons end, only North Ballarat (11) will have played more top seven opposition for the season (out of the top 7).

But that is the way it goes when teams don't play each other twice - you must find a way to get it done. And the 2018/19 premiers have earned the tougher draw given their recent successes.

The Swans, like the Kangas, seemingly play their best footy in Ballarat and will need to present something close to that if they're trouble Jackson Merrett's group at Eastern Oval.

Drastic improvement on their last meet they will need to find - essentially a 45-point differential from Round 4 at Alfredton Oval.

Surely the Swans young group are beginning to tire despite the recent return of Daniel Kennedy and other depth players that played some role last year in their standout third place finish.

But too often the Swans are kept to scores not capable of winning games. On six occasions this year Chris Maple's young group have been kept to six goals or less.

While you’d expect them to surpass that quota, outscoring the freewheeling nature of the Kangas front half, as witnessed in Round 4, looms a different proposition altogether.

Merrett will be under no illusions what's required from his group - win and win well or contemplate missing finals for the first time since 2017.   

Scoop’s tip: East Point

While a win for the visitors will surely take care of itself, the Bloods will aim to get through unscathed ahead of two big games against Sunbury (H) and Darley (A).

Bloods’ coach Aaron Tymms will consider throwing the magnets around once this game is put to bed as a plan B option for finals, identifying some versatility within his squad.

But don't expect leading forward Ryan Carter to be going anywhere! After his come from behind tied win for the Tony Lockett Medal last year, expect the Bloods to make a certainty of it this time around with a 'Christmas in July', stocking full of goals.

Carter (38 goals) leads the competition by four ahead of Redan's Isaac Grant (34) and Ballarat's Andrew Hooper (33). A double figure bag could be on the radar for the tall, mobile forward.

The Panthers’ young blokes will gain some quality ‘on the job’ learnings running with the likes of Jack Walker and Lachie Watkins. Braedyn Kight will showcase his footy smarts forward and Jordy Cotter down back.

Panthers coach Ryan Hoy, 13 rounds deep into a long season may consider mixing it up at review, highlighting why the Bloods remain the benchmark, and most organised of all clubs in the BFNL.

Making a case for the Panthers upsetting their cross-town rivals today would be a falsehood. Bettering their 161-point loss at their first meet and denying the Bloods a 200-point scoreline looms a more achievable challenge.

Scoop’s tip: Melton

The Devils have a golden opportunity to advance into third place on the BFNL table (with a game in hand) when they start hot favorites against one-win Lake Wendouree.

While the Lakers’ season has been disappointing, they have shown some improvements, albeit in loss, with recent eight-goal returns against finals contenders Sebastopol, North Ballarat and East Point.

Their tough run of footy, including Melton, should hold them in good stead on the competitive front despite the absence of the O'Connell boys (overseas), Callum McKay (shoulder) and Jacob Coxall (concussion issues).

The inclusions of twin towers, former St Josephs (GFL) big man Tom Zampatti and Rebels tall Felix Fogarty has at least given Lakers mid-season appointed coach Tim Shearer some structural presence to work with.

The towering duo have featured three times in the best in their five and four games respectively,

For the Devils, coach Dan Jordan will have a list of priorities wanting to be achieved as his side continues its journey back to full health and fitness ahead of finals.

While the likes of Billy Myers, Luther Baker, Brady Wright and Leigh Spiteri have returned, there's nothing like more game time into rebuilding synergy with the group and their own 'tanks' in the process with big games still to come against North Ballarat, Melton and Sunbury.

Since their arrival home on Darley Park the Devils have been a bit leaky in defence over their three games, averaging 77 points against, despite wins over Bacchus Marsh and Sebastopol.

No doubt the Devils will look to reduce this number against the Lakers with finals-like frugality, a key component if Jordan's crew intend to go deep into finals.

This battle is just what the competition needs ahead of five remaining home and away rounds that will decide the final make-up of the top six.

Depending on who you ask, both sides could play the underdog card with the Burra strong on their home deck while the Roosters arrive on the back of a seven-game winning streak.

Just what version of the Burra we get to witness on Saturday will go a long way determining their fate. Despite a 155-point win over the winless Panthers last week, the club is still not sure of its best 22.

Rushing Jed Hill. James Keeble, Bailey Medwell, Lachie Cassidy and Arnold Kirby back sounds like the ultimate restock, but how many returns are too many?

Often list turnover in the five or more range from one week to the next can be unsettling on the connection front. That's not including Daniel Widgery, Chase Dummett, Graydn Snowden, Jai Harvey and Ryan Birthesel who were also sidelined.

And connection will be just what Kiel and Columbro will need from their selected group if they're to end North Ballarat's middle season blitz.

Roosters’ coach Brendan McCartney is well aware he'll have to earn a top three finish the hard way with four remaining games against tough opposition - Sebastopol (A), Darley (A), Sunbury (H) and East Point (H).

The availability of the VFL affiliates at both clubs, like it or not, will have a bearing.

The Burras’ Jay Dahlhaus (Werribee) has had an immediate impact in his two games with nine goals, admittedly against the bottom two sides.

For North Ballarat, Jamie Quick (Geelong), Sam Glover (Collingwood) and Jack Riding (Werribee) all share match winning qualities that would pose a headache for the Burras’ hierarchy in the event of their selection.

North Ballarat looks the more settled for mine and on that alone, will lean to McCartney's army in a tight one.

With seasons on the line and claim local bragging rights at stake, there is plenty to play for this weekend as we head into the Round 14 action.

The Ballarat Swans are aiming for three wins on the trot and an opportunity to consolidate their place inside the top six when they travel to CE Brown Reserve to take on the Lakers this Saturday.

The two recent wins for Chris Maple's group ahead of their bye in Round 13 warranted plenty of merit accounting for Sunbury (22 points) and Redan (69 points).

While the jury rests over the scope and potential of the Swans moving forward, we're left to ponder just what version of the Lakers we're going to get.

On six occasions already this season (twice at home) the enigmatic Lakers have been held to five goals or less for the match holding grave fears for their ability recording an upset over the Swans and third win of 2024.

Unfortunately for the Lakers, despite frequent encouragement from rival coaches in the post-match, they're habitual sleepers at the wheel.

In 12/48 quarters this season, the Lakers have conceded six goals or more with nine of those resulting in seven or more.

On the flipside around scoring, the Lakers have been held goalless in 10/48 quarters.

The Lakers have gone on the record requesting no favours or concessions be made around age or where they're at re development. Request granted.

We look for a response from the Lakers on the perfect stage, the BFNL Match of the Round, streamed LIVE across the country.

Can Rohan Brown's Lakers find their groove and catch the Swans napping early off the bye and throw a spanner in the works for Chris Maple ahead of a likely finals preparation?

I'm not so sure - it's really a game the Swans should be winning on exposed form.

Despite recent improvement, the Panthers face a near impossible task containing crosstown rival and ladder leaders Melton when they venture to MacPherson Park.

Where do you start breaking this game down, defining a 'mini win' for Travis Hodgson's struggling group?

I'm not sure even Hodgson has put a finger on it in the lead up.

Weather permitting the Bloods will have every opportunity matching their Round 1 return on the scoreboard in excess of 200 points if they don their kicking boots.

To put the disparity into perspective, Bloods’ star forward Braedan Kight (58 goals) has kicked 15 more goals than the Panthers have for the season.

Even Ryan Carter (29 goals) and Kyle Borg (19 goals) as an unlikely combo have more, highlighting the degrees of difficulty around containment awaiting the embattled Panthers.

What Hodgson and his club can ask for is effort, an area you can't deny the Panthers of in recent weeks.

Their core group led by Cody Chapman are a proud group despite their winless record in 2024 and will need little motivation getting up for another chapter of the local derby.

This match will tell us more about the Panthers than it will the Bloods.

With the result deemed inevitable given the current landscape - just how long the Panthers can hang in and savour a few moments hitting the scoreboard may be enough to redeem a wry smile out of the Hodgson camp, on an otherwise tough afternoon expected for the navy blue and white.

Despite the undermanned nature of the Roosters, expect them to start red hot favorites when they host the Cobras at Mars Stadium.

Both sides have had their struggles in more recent times with the Roosters dropping their last two games and the Cobras five of their last six. But the form of Brendan McCartney's inexperienced group reads undoubtedly more favourable (Darley, Melton) than Dennis Armfield's touring party.

Mars Stadium has not been a successful hunting ground for any visitors let alone the Cobras, earmarking the challenge for Armfield as one of the toughest over his short tenure.

I know looking back at previous results has its flaws, but there's no denying the Cobras will be up against it despite retaining the likes of Rye Penny and Wil Lalor.

However, they will miss feverish on-ballers Tyson Shea (jaw) and Jake McCreery (suspended) - both crucial to their fortunes, especially against top five opposition.  

If there was ever a time to get last year’s grand finalists, the time is now.

Just 10 players from the Roosters’ agonising one point loss to the Devils in 2023 took the field last week against Melton.

The absentees would walk into any other BFNL side, plain and simple.

So, the Cobras arrive with an outside prizefighter’s chance of walking away with their biggest win of the season and their first against any side currently above them.

Luke Goetz, Jake Owen and a host of improving youngsters are capable of taking it up to the hosts for periods but can the remaining collective match the trademark effort and intensity of a Roosters group on their home deck for long enough?

I anticipate the assignment proves a bridge too far.

The injury ravaged Devils could fall from third to fifth in a fortnight and as low as sixth by the end of the home and away season if they fail to account for Sebastopol at Darley Park.

Given the absence of key personnel in all areas, the Devils (4th) will start underdogs, in my opinion, against a surging Burras (8th) outfit, despite their superior position on the BFNL table.

While the Devils squad of 22 is looking less and less familiar by the week, Tony Lockyer's visiting party is beginning to resemble more like the Burra we know following the return of star mid Lachie Cassidy and attacking half back Jack Bambury.

Key intercept defender Riley O'Keefe was a late out last week in the Burras 58-point win over the Lakers and is likely to return, bolstering stocks even further.

Important inside mid Daniel Widgery who has been in the best 4/10 games will also be in consideration after also missing against the Lakers.

Let's not forget, the Burra arrive on a mission of their own with their season on the line.

Led by Tony Lockyer (in best 9/12), the injury free, now reborn midfielder has been in super form, named 'best on' for the Burra in five of his last eight games.

That's Matty Johnston and Brett Bewley kind of stuff!

Speaking of Bewley, let's address the elephant in the room.

If the reigning dual Henderson Medalist does not play (50/50 as it stands), the Devils will surely struggle given Billy Myers, Brady Wright, Wil Johnson, Zane Le Huray (suspended), Mitch Ward and Jack Bewley are already sidelined.

Surely they won't risk their premiership captain ahead of the bye in Round 15 with important run home matches against Sunbury, Bacchus Marsh and Melton.

It's time for the remaining Devils, led by Luther Baker, Matty Brett and Matty Denham to pick up the slack, find a way and drag the backs-to-the-wall reigning premiers over the line.

Tough ask.

With just a month left on the home & away calender, every moment counts out on the field. Round 15 is set to answer some questions on where things stand in the run home of season 2023.

The anticipation is high for this all-important showstopper as two of the BFNL's more experienced mentors aim to implement a winning plan that will keep their side’s top three chances alive.

Brendan McCartney's travelling party will arrive confident having won seven of their last eight games including a 57-point (home) win over the Devils in Round 9.

The Roosters army were at their frugal best on that occasion restricting a disappointing Darley to just 28 points.

To put it in perspective, only Melton South (14) has scored less against the Roosters in their 13 games this season.

However, it wasn't the first time the Devils have failed to flatter in more recent times at Mars Stadium having lost by 69 points under Jordan in round 11, 2022.

As if it were a line in the sand moment for the Devils, they've won 16 of 20 games since. They're a better team now under Jordan, enough to warrant a 'mulligan' for their Round 9 failings without the likes of Billy Myers, Luther Baker and Bailey Young.

The fans will be spoilt with the levels of quality we’re likely to see on display.

For the home side, reigning Henderson Medalist Brett Bewley (named in the best nine times from 11 games) will lead the likes of Myers, Baker, Young, Matthew Brett, Shane Page and a host of improving types endevouring to impact under the radar.

Not to be outdone, Roosters marquee signing Stewart Crameri arrives with in-form mids Jack Riding, Riley Polkinghorne, star Collingwood VFL listed swingman Sam Glover, the returning Tom Hotchin and dominant big man Cam McCullum.

Unfortunately for the visitors, no Jamie Quick (33 goals) who must follow concussion protocols after a knock in last week’s loss to Sebastopol.

This one should be a ripper.

Fingers crossed, fine weather is forecast and the game is given every chance to deliver on its promise.

Both sides will look the winners for a long way but leaning with history repeating on McCartney's last trip to Darley Park in a lower scoring affair than the Devils 100-82 victory.          

Scoop’s tip: Darley

The Cobras will look to gain some reward for their recent competitiveness with the hope of victory over winless Melton South.

While a third win of the season appears more likely for the travelling Cobras, there's nothing like the feeling of a win and rendition of the victory theme song in full voice.

Unfortunately for Ryan Hoy's Panthers they're little chance of enjoying the very thing we can take for granted - winning.

It's been the toughest introduction for any coach in recent memory, averaging 176 points against per game.

Adding salt to the wound does little for the embattled club who have also endured a horror run with injury culminating in a third loss of 200 plus points last weekend.

This week however is no Melton, Sunbury or Darley, the three clubs to have put Melton South to the sword by 200+ points, so look for the Panthers to make positive inroads.

They’ll be eyeing the hope to top their highest return this season with a score of 8.12-60 the benchmark, a tally posted against the Lakers in Round 5.

Easier said than done however, as the Cobras eye some conviction of their own.

Their top end talent led by Jake Owen, Jake McCreery and Luke Goetz will ensure the majority of game is played on the Cobras terms as they endeavor to tick off a number of KPI's.

Coach Jason Williams won't be taking this game lightly and will be reliant on a collective buy-in from the outset, enabling maximum result possibilities.

Scoop’s tip: Bacchus Marsh

Sunbury head to MacPherson Park with their slim top three chances still intact. But they will have to do it the hard way on the run home needing wins against Melton (A), North Ballarat (A), Bacchus Marsh (H) and Darley (A).

A big ask, but they're looking ominous ahead of the business end following the return of Tyson Lever (foot) and Mitch Lewis (overseas). Dangerous forward Jake Sutton (overseas) is expected to arrive home on Thursday, prior to the Bloods showdown.

While the Bloods have lost just one game this year, they will have to overcome the Lions without key forward duo Ryan (concussion) and Liam Carter (calf).

Aaron Tymms' men remain the blueprint for the soldier in, soldier out theory but there is no doubt even the most loyal of Bloods’ fans would be wondering where their scores will come from.

That said they did have 14 goalkickers last week against the Panthers.

Given Port Melbourne VFL have the bye expect former St Kilda listed Brenton Payne to assume the key forward role and Braedyn Kight to sacrifice recent midfield minutes for a return primarily to the front half where he is a proven matchwinner.

That would be a nice place to start in the absence of the Carter brothers.

The midfield battle will be finals-like. We're familiar with each teams’ capabilities offensively in this area but do the Lions have the discipline to impact without the ball, denying the Bloods run in transition.

Not many can say they have, especially on Maccy Park.

Can Sutton and ageless support act Leigh Brennan do enough to trouble the Bloods defence? While Sutton has 28 goals from his eight games, the jury is out whether he can impact 48 hours post an overseas return.

Big Lion Cody Brand will also need to stand up against the reigning premiers - his appointed role at either end will be crucial.

The Lions are 0-3 against top three opposition this year and come into the game with a questionable four-week preparation having had Melton South, Ballarat and the bye in the lead up to this Bloods battle. 

Scoop’s tip: Melton

Visitors Redan will be chasing their first win in four weeks when they meet the tenth placed Lakers at CE Brown Reserve.

The Lions head into the game warm favorites and will look to put this game to bed early as they continue their quest for a prized top six finish.

They will be given every chance to usurp East Point (bye) in sixth place. Overcoming the Lakers will see the Lions back into the six, percentage ahead of the Kangas.

An unlikely loss for Gary Learmonth's young group will jeopardise their chances however it would not be the end of the world given the nature of their draw sees the Roos still a strong showing to finish sixth.

So, expect the Kangas from a distance to have one cheeky eye on the prospects of an upset.

But let’s be realistic - Redan should win and win well despite having won just three of their last eight games.

Midfield quartet Isaac Grant (34 goals), Lachie George (in best four times from seven appearances), Cooper Craig-Peters and Daniel Bond will look to assert early dominance around clearance to give opportune forwards Grant Bell (19 goals), Marty Boyer (15 goals) and Lachie McLean (14 goals) first crack impacting the scoreboard.

Despite the Lakers’ capitulating loss to Darley last week, they were very competitive for the best part of three quarters.

Big men Tom Zampatti and Felix Fogarty have added some aerial presence while defenders Angus Gove, Bailey Ryan and Cody Helyar showed resilience against quality opposition.

It's a shame the Lakers have had to endure recent weeks without the O'Connell boys (overseas), Jacob Coxall (concussion issues), Callum McKay (shoulder) and Flynn Loader.

Kicking a winning score could be the Lakers’ greatest challenge. They have managed just eight goals in four of their last six games

A tally that will see them struggle to win but maybe enough to keep them in the game long enough.

With the top six sides all but locked in for 2024, Round 16 presents a number of clashes set to go a long way in telling the tale of how the September action may play out.

While its second placed East Point taking on fifth placed North Ballarat, the Roosters could well be in for a long afternoon.

The Kangas have won their last 12 in a row, having won all six of their season home games by an average of just under 82 points. Extraordinary really.

Their overwhelming firepower has seen them catapulted to equal flag fancy alongside Melton boasting four of the top 14 goalkickers and number one target for marks inside 50 (Bryson McDougall).

Coach Joe Carmody has delivered on a team defence model led by Jacob Brown and Jackson Merrett that sees them ranked only behind Melton for average points conceded per game - a miserly 49 points.

North Ballarat had just seven players from their 2023 Grand Final side in their draw against Ballarat last week and will look to get a body of work into a host of potential returns ahead of a finals campaign.

Even in the event of four or five returning, which is unlikely, first up on Eastern Oval - expectations would be low given their respective (lengthy) layoffs.

But you have to give credit to Brendan McCartney's undermanned Roosters for hanging in, up against more seasoned opposition Darley, Melton and East Point having not been blown away in any.

In fact, the Roosters hit the front at Mars Stadium in the last quarter of their previous meet with the high-flying Kangaroos which poses a timely reminder for Carmody to keep the pedal to the metal.

Star Kangas midfielder Matty Johnston is endeavouring to make it four best on ground efforts in a row and give his Henderson Medal chances another boost.

Good luck the Roosters containing arguably the most in form midfielder in the competition.

A tough ask lies in waiting for the visitors, let's hope they get a change of luck at the selection table ahead of the BFNL's Match of the Round LIVE with vision and commentary via the BFNL Match Centre from 2pm Saturday.

Redan will enjoy a change of fortunes when they host Melton South at City Oval.

The reality is, the Lions have lost six of their last seven games by an average of 63.5 points - their only win for the period coming against Bacchus Marsh in Round 10.

Sure, five of the Lions’ six defeats have come against top six opposition so expect the Pride to embrace the class drop here in front of home fans with a big win.

Getting back to hitting the scoreboard will be a welcoming feature for Gary Learmonth and his team who have been denied in recent weeks despite the weaponry forward of Lachie Bond, Grant Bell and Marty Boyer.

The connection of midfield entries into the Lions’ forward line has been a frustrating constant for Learmonth with four of their last six games ending in scores of 40 or less.

Look for some freedom on City Oval, no doubt Learmonth will push the want for his boys to enjoy their footy and as a result I’m sure we'll witness some bang for buck on the scoreboard.

The Lions had 26 scoring shots against the Burra last week, for just 10 goals. With a landslide of inside 50s predicted, expect something in the 20 goals+ range against the Panthers, whose struggles in Ballarat look set to continue.

Travis Hodgson's young group managed just the one goal in each of their previous two games, albeit against Melton and Sunbury.

I anticipate the former Cobras premiership coach will be wanting in excess of a five goal return against a leaking Lions defence who have conceded over 100 points, five times this season.

The fourth placed Devils welcome back star duo Brett Bewley and Billy Myers for their all-important meeting with the third placed Lions at Darley Park this Saturday.

Forget the first 15 rounds. In reality, the Devils title defence begins NOW as they move a step closer to resembling their best 22.

To suggest the stakes are high would be an understatement given the value of third place in the context of the BFNL finals series. The winner will move a game clear of the other with two games left to play.

The Devils at home, on talent alone will start slight favourites, but what's under the bonnet?

Questions will be asked of the Devils to produce for four quarters, not dissimilar to their last meet when the Lions over ran Dan Jordan's men. 

In essence it will be just the fifth game for the Devils in 10 weeks, not to mention a challenging period on the injury front.

The visiting Lions will be supremely fit, that's a given but will need to overcome the absence of under rated trio Jack Hannett, Jack Newitt and Jordan Tentonello - three bona fide defenders, good ball users, all crucial with their efficient rebounding, especially under pressure.

Expect the Lions’ inspirational leader Tyson Lever and breakout small forward Mitch McLean (34 goals) to return into a side coming off a monster 180-point win over Melton South.

Given the Lions’ bye in Round 14, it will be Lever and McLean's first hit-out in 21 days.

With Harry Power doubtful and Jake Egan likely to return through the reserves having not played since Round 11, the door is ajar for the Devils to turn the tables.

The two club’s fierce and healthy rivalry pre dates their entry into the BFNL in the mid-nineties with the weight of public interest likely to replicate a finals atmosphere on a perfect day forecast for football.

There's a bit left to play out here - I’ll let "actions" take care of the rest.

Quite an interesting matchup looms at Marty Bush Reserve when the Burra host the Swans.

While I branded last week’s Sebastopol v Redan game as the unofficial decider for the 'best side outside the six', this showdown could easily be built up as the Burras’ grand final.

A chance to make it two wins in a row before a bye and potential third at home against Melton South beckons, finishing the year off on a high.

So given the scenario put to them, the Burra will need little motivation getting up for this game against a team that has essentially taken the one spot in the finals Tony Lockyer’s men were eyeing off a month ago.

So, what do the Swans have to play for? They're a lock for finals, won't want to get injured and may err on the weight of caution to make sure all is well upon their return to the September action.

I've no doubt outgoing Swans coach Chris Maple won't see it that way, he's not on a journey simply to make up the numbers in the first week of finals and will use this opportunity for further growth.

There is more to do at Ballarat this year and the Burra will provide the ideal hit out to work on the learnings of previous weeks.

Ball use and coping with pressure and perceived pressure will be high on the agenda at the Swans.

Their cattle is of sound quality, and proven more than capable on their day after a 22-point breakout win over Sunbury in Round 11.

I'm tipping Sebastopol to play with more freedoms under less pressure given what lies ahead for these two in 2024.

The Cobras host relentless flag fancies Melton at Maddingley Park this weekend.

Just where to start making a case for Dennis Armfield's group is not easy given they've won just one game post their Round 7 bye and have a 0-7 record against top six opposition in 2024.

The Bloods, put simply, are flying. The Cobras, still learning.

Bloods’ coach Troy Scoble will welcome a solid hit out in the lead up to finals with the 10th placed Lakers and Darley to come. Given the nature of the ladder, the Round 18 clash with the Devils could be a dead rubber, essentially two hours of preservation before the 'real stuff' begins.

The Cobras at their best would provide Scoble's Bloods with the desired intensity to sharpen them up off the bye. But what version of the red, yellow and black are we likely to see?

They were in the game on the road against North Ballarat just a fortnight ago before the flood gates opened.

The season long struggles for the Cobras conceding back-to-back goals is likely to go on for at least another week, such has been the dominance of the Bloods over the competition.

While we're sure to witness another promising performance from a next gen Cobra, the likelihood of that impacting the result is an ambitious call.

Mini wins will be on the agenda for Dennis Armfield.

Winning a half or even a quarter would be a huge result for the Cobras given the standings of the two clubs on the BFNL table.

Since the Cobras’ bye in Round 7 they have won just five quarters including games against bottom two sides Melton South and Lake Wendouree.

On the flipside, the Bloods have won 17 of their last 18 quarters, having lost just nine quarters for the season, rank one in the competition.

Look out Cobras, leading Bloods’ forward Braedan Kight will be on a mission to add to his tally of 59 goals and build on his four-goal advantage in the race for the Tony Lockett Medal.
