The intriguing BFNL football season continued on Saturday with crucial home victories and massive away trips unfolding.

The Cobras simply did enough to earn an all-important fifth win of the season with a 65-point victory over the Lakers at Maddingley Park.

The percentage builder helps consolidate the Cobras’ position inside the top six, now two games clear of Melton (6th), Sunbury (7th) and East Point (8th).

Dennis Armfield’s group had to get the job done without bookends Jake Owen and Wil Lalor.

Unlikely goal source, Jack Kovacevic, finished with a game high four goals to answer the call ahead of nine other Cobras to hit the scoreboard.

Opportunists Ethan McKercher and Billy Griffiths were the beneficiaries of the crumb chiming in with three apiece.

There were some new faces named among the best for the Cobras - Hunter Tudball, James McDaid (Western Jets) and season additions Zach Vesty and Billy Griffiths joined Kovacevic and Josh Huxtable to be in the BOG conversation.

The Lakers were honest once again with five fourth-quarter goals to register their highest score in 12 months.

Rohan Brown’s boys would have enjoyed the spread of seven goalkickers hitting the scoreboard.

New recruits Corey Rich and Alfred Jarnestrom were considered best for the Lakers ahead of Kynan Raven who made it a third appearance in eight games.

The winless Lakers will fight on chasing an elusive maiden win in 2026 when they host North Ballarat in Round 9.

The Cobras are away to ladder leaders Sebastopol this week and are likely to be without Owen and Lalor for another week.

The ‘real deal’ Swans made it six wins in a row accounting for 2025 grand finalists Sunbury by 19 points at Alfredton Oval.

Given the enviable depth and health of Ash Baker’s list, it would be no surprise to see them continue on their impressive run with a win over the Devils at Darley Park this weekend.

The Swans have travelled just once away from Ballarat this season with a 12-point win over Melton after a slow start - so the challenge is out there to consolidate their credentials this week away from home.

Sunbury coach Matty White was typically honest with his assessment of the Swans in the post-match indicating the margin may have flattered his Pride.

The Swans, not unlike the Burra and the Roosters have been the story of the year so far.

Their effort at the weekend was solid again, every bit of a side in the mix for a top seed come the business end.

There was very little separating the Swans and Sunbury at each of the breaks in a seesawing affair before the well drilled bevy kicked away in the final term adding 3.5 to the Lions’ 1.1 to win ‘going away’.

200cm Swans trio Patrick Graham (best), Alex Keath and Biggie Nyuon (four goals) featured prominently once again, sounding alarm bells for the Devils moving forward given their clear lack of height options.

Swans mid/half back Tristan Maple returned with Keath to bolster stocks with immediate effect.

In form midfield combo Lewis Rinaldi, Thomas Simpson and Brad Crouch were good again, copy and paste impact from the previous week’s win over the Cobras.

All of the Swans growing stable of big guns are in form and are being well supported by a progressive depth pool who would get a game in any other team in the BFNL.

Hard to beat moving forward.

Sunbury did plenty right on the road against one of the new flag fancies and should take plenty of learnings from the contest ahead of their next meeting scheduled for Clarke Oval in Round 18. Given what we know of the opening eight rounds, expect a fallout from the Round 18 rematch ahead of finals.

Looking for Lions who made it difficult for the Swans getting a game in their own terms for long enough, one couldn’t ignore the efforts of Josh Guthrie (best), Jack Newitt and Daniel Johnston (three goals).

Next gen talent Cody Bramble continues his successful return from an ACL tear that sidelined the speedster for 12 months.

Sunbury host East Point for a must win game in Round 9 while the Swans are primed to inflict the Devils with their fourth loss of the season and their first at home since the 2024 second semi-final.

Credit to Matt and his Sunbury side - they came with plenty of intent and pressure and proved why they are the number 1 ranked team for contested possession. In trying conditions, Sunbury certainly brought plenty of pressure early and in an arm wrestle, there wasn’t much separating the teams at half time. Our boys were able to re-assess at half time, steady and get the game more on our terms late in the second half. Pleased with our ability to stick at it and pleased that our two debutants - both 16 years of age - were able to experience a top-level game of BFNL senior football.”

Got some top end guys in some form at the moment which is great but we weren’t able to hold on against one of the top teams in the league. Put it down to around 15 mins of footy from Ballarat that we just couldn’t stop. Probably lucky the missed a few shots that makes the scoreline look a bit better. Recover and get ourselves ready for a big game at home now!”

The Kangas find themselves just percentage outside of the six following a comfortable 60-point win over an inaccurate Redan.

Forward pair Jack Jeffrey (four) and Jarrod Joyce (three) combined for seven goals to earn some needed separation on the scoreboard given the Kangas’ inferior percentage.

Midfielders Mickitja Rotumah-Onus and Jesse Cairns enjoyed another productive day at the source while Deng Lual and Liam Howard continue to build on some mid-season form.

Redan did themselves no favours on the scoreboard in the opening half with 1.9 next to their name. It was 10 shots on goal apiece at the main break but a 20-point lead to the hosts - real break your heart stuff on the conversion front.

The bird had flown for the Lions as they struggled in the second half adding just 2.2 to the Kangas’ 8.6. Game over.

The young Lions have not won a last quarter since their season opening win over the Lakers.

While disappointed with the outcome, it wasn’t without admirable effort from a handful of Lions including Rory Gunsser, Jake Connolly, Oscar Henderson, Billy Douglass and Harry Lawson.

The Lions host a vulnerable Bloods out for next week while the Kangas prepare for a genuine throw at the stumps opportunity against Sunbury.

Both sides are locked on three wins and sit seventh and eighth on the table.

Should be another cracking round of BFNL action this weekend.

Four goals from Roosters match winner Jamie Quick has given coach Clint Proctor arguably his most satisfying win from his 26 games in charge.

Under trying conditions that resembled more of an arm wrestle, the hosts were expected to be up against it given a host of key outs.

The Roosters had nine players aged 18 or younger to worry the reigning premiers out of a game that went down to the wire.

The Devils never looked comfortable in the conditions nor at the venue that has yielded just one win from their last six visits.

All kudos to Proctor and his Roosters getting the job done with 12 players sidelined with injury and unavailability.

Quick’s four goals were the difference in a low scoring game.

Seb Collins, Finn Russell and Josh Morris stood up alongside Quick to aid the cause and win as underdogs.

North Ballarat will feature prominently at the business end, wins like these are invaluable as the missing troops stagger their returns.

While Darley coach Dan Jordan was relatively positive in the aftermath it really was one game that got away.

The once enviable aura of the Devils is diminishing by the week despite stellar seasons from big three Brett Bewley, Billy Myers and Nick Hind who featured prominently again in the narrow loss.

The week ahead does not get any easier for the Devils as they prepare to take on the high-flying Swans (2nd) at Darley Park.

Ladder leaders Sebastopol overcame a scare to earn the premiership points against a brave Melton in perfect conditions at MacPherson Park.

The Bloods led at every change, as their pressure and effort wound the clock back despite a handful of key outs. But it was the Burra who refused to give in, hell bent on securing an all-important road win.

Not all went right for Tony Lockyer’s men - while you couldn’t doubt their effort and intent, they were scratchy with their ball use and decision making early on.

Credit to the Burra staying the course booting 10 goals to five in the second half to overrun the Bloods, validating their position at the top of the BFNL table.

Ash Munari booted four goals for the winners and Adam Forbes two, while Bloods forward Braedan Kight returned his biggest haul of the season to match Munari’s day out with four majors.

There were a host of impact contributors from both sides - coaches Lockyer and Troy Scoble would’ve been proud of their groups output. Quality game.

The Burra hierarchy settled on smooth mover Luke Kiel and ball magnet Felix Henderson as their best while the Bloods recognised Caleb Burquest in a break-out game for the youngster and the x-factor display from Kight inside forward 50.

Wet, wild and Wintery conditions made it tough going around the grounds yet still provided plenty of thrilling results in Round 9.

High flying Sebastopol continued to impress with a comfortable 40-point win over the Cobras at Marty Busch Reserve.

It was the Burra’s fourth win on the trot and eighth for the season at the halfway mark.

Finally, a full bill of health for Tony Lockyer’s outfit and we have been fortunate to get a front row seat along for the ride.

The usual suspects did it again - Lachlan Cassidy (in best 3/6), Luke Kiel (5/9) Lockyer (4/9) and co while the recent form of Felix Henderson (3/9) and forward Ash Munari (two goals) has been encouraging.

By definition, the Cobras were undermanned and will struggle claiming a scalp without Jake Owen, Will Lalor and, in Saturday’s case, Isaac Nixon (flu).

If it’s any consolation for their coach Dennis Armfield, they did win the highly anticipated ruck dual between Luke Goetz and Toby Hutt.

Other mini wins on the road included a second quarter response of five goals to have them with 20 points at halftime and the effort of Michael Ktona (two goals) who was a late call up into the side.

Despite the Wintery conditions both sides provided loyal fans a forward showing on the basic fundamentals - which is not always easy in Ballarat.

While there’s been injury aplenty at Cobra land this season, they must be rapt with the development of Cody Gates who made it a fourth appearance in the bests from his nine games in 2026.

The Burra are away to danger team East Point this week while the Cobras prepare for a very winnable assignment at home against three-win Melton (7th).

The Roosters continue making an impression with their depth following a 50-point win over Lake Wendouree at CE Brown Reserve.

With double digit absentees pitted on the sidelines it was up to key utility Josh Morris (two goals) and Sam Glover prodigy Dominic Penny to lead the way.

Roosters coach Clint Proctor will welcome any win given the current landscape while his soldiers mend from week to week.

Simon McCartin and Max Faulkner made welcomed returns and will be better for the run.

Samuel Artz and Elliot Lamb were at their honest best while the form of Jye Lockett (four goals) and Taj Bowman remains in the favourable space.

An encouraging opening half from the Lakers, while without a win, their form is trending upwards.

Newcomers Alfred Jarnestrom and Corey Rich featured prominently again to land in the best.

Scoring won’t get any easier for the Lakers as Winter hits - they just need to take their opportunities.

Logan Clark (two goals) was the Lakers only multiple goal scorer that saw them in touch at the half just 10 points shy of the 7-2 Roosters.

The Lakers venture to City Oval on Saturday to face Redan who would still be riding high after their upset win over Melton.

North Ballarat are away to Alfredton Oval this week to take on the Swans who will be looking to bounce back quickly from their narrow loss to Darley.

Another test for North Ballarat’s depth awaits.

Surely the Swans can upset the Roosters, still 10-11 soldiers shy of their best 22.

Sunbury moved into the top six with a solid win over a brave East Point side at Clarke Oval.

The Kangas arrived full of spirit with every intent of bucking the trend of a 0-8 record at the venue for Ballarat sides spanning the best part of 2 years.

Joe Carmody’s boys gave it an almighty shake having led at every change, but a goalless final term would prove their undoing.

Sunbury’s Jack Newitt was named best ahead of midfield pair Harry Power and Josh Guthrie.

Youngster Blake Walker was earning the nod of hierarchy while the one constant for the Lions in Tyson Lever was never far from the action.

Worth noting the Lions were missing few - Jake Egan, Jake Sutton, Daniel Johnston, Fraser Ampulski, Mitch McLean, Brock Landt, Dean Muir, Lewis Tudor, Zach Stevens, Keenan O’Shea, Myles Gollant and Tyson Cook.

Take those 12 players out of your preferred team and you’re vulnerable, especially against a hungry Kangas outfit that could smell a fourth win on the trot.

Goals were always going to come at a premium for the Lions given the reliability of their outs.

Newitt and Nathan Doyle chimed in with three ‘better than handy’ ones apiece while Kangas’ warrior Jacob Brown finished with a game high four majors, nearly dragging the visitors over the line.

Known defender Sam Lucas was sent forward and kicked three to aid the Kangas’ cause who had a number of good players.

Encouraging to see Deng Lual and Cooper Glenwright-McGuane recognised for their effort on the road ahead of Joe Dodd, Joe Fraser, Jessie Cairns and of course, Brown.

Gee Sunbury will be tough to beat again at home this week against the Devils, with up to a dozen likely to miss.

East Point get a “throw at the stumps” opportunity against Sebastopol (8-1).

Look at it as another chance to measure the rebuild.

Should be a compelling Round 10 of BFNL action. Stay tuned.

Redan gave new season coach Marc Greig his finest moment over his short time, with a spirited one-point upset win over Melton.

The Lions led at every change, giving loyal fans something to smile about in the aftermath.

It’s the ideal prep for a potential second win in a row and a third for the season when they host the Lakers in Round 10.

What we can draw from the last fortnight is Winter has arrived in Ballarat. Cold wind and rain has seen 40 points in an afternoon prove enough for victory in successive weeks.

Melton clearly struggled to adapt despite multiple goal returns from Braedan Kight (three goals) and Ryan Carter (two goals).

Redan had five individual goalkickers but that was enough to get the job done.

Rory Gunsser was named best for the winners ahead of Nick Barker, Jacob Werts, Daniel Bond and returnees Will Madden and Oscar Henderson.

The result could have gone either way but the fallout for the Bloods cannot be denied.

Just three wins from their first nine games sees them a game outside the top six - a foreign place for the perennial finalists of recent times.

The Bloods were close. In fact, they’re never far away and will front the opportunity ahead against Bacchus Marsh at Maddingley Park with every bit of intent.

Kyle Borg, Braedan Kight, Caleb Burquest, Ryan Davis, Harry Handley and Lachie Phillips featured in the best for the Bloods who were missing Jordy Kight, Adrian Monitto, Lachie Watkins, Jack, Lachie and Riley Walker.

A loss this week against the Cobras will put their finals chances in jeopardy - so expect them to prepare accordingly for the first of many season defining games we’re sure to bear witness.

A rejuvenated Lions outfit should make it back-to-back wins with a win over the Lakers regardless of the big chill!

There’ll be lots of bruised bodies for both sides.”

The Devils bounced back to the winner’s list with a nail-biting five-point win over Ballarat.

The highly anticipated affair most certainly lived up to the billing giving buoyant fans a front row seat to one of the games of the season.

This matchup had everything.

While as many as seven ex-AFL players were represented it was two former and current VFL listed talents that led the way for their respective teams in a finals like rehearsal.

Devils’ quintessential playmaker Billy Myers (ex-Williamstown) booted seven goals, making light work of a slippery ball both in the air and his pinpoint goalkicking.

Footscray VFL listed accumulator Tristan Maple did his future prospects no harm with a standout display around the ground - his run and distribution was part the catalyst of a Swans comeback in the second half.

Both camps would concede it was a tale of two halves with the Devils exploding out of the blocks with five goals over a scintillating eight minutes to stun Ash Baker’s bevy who arrived on a 6-0 run.

Darley coach Dan Jordan was thrilled with the immediate response after “a chat” during the week.

Relatively dry conditions prevailed for the entire first half as the Devils extended to a 43-point lead at the main break.

Brett Bewley, Nick Hind, Joel Cadman and Adam Azzopardi had the wood over the Swans’ midfield despite the efforts Fraser Perkins who was leading the resistance.

Enter the rain.

The Swans refused to throw in the towel with an inaccurate 5.7 in the third – ex-Western Bulldog Andrew Hooper provided the spark with three goals and challenged the Devils’ defence in slippery conditions.

The reigning premiers looked to have regressed into their shell, as if haunted by their disappointing loss in the wet to North Ballarat seven days earlier.

Surely a 19-point buffer for Darley at the final break would be enough? Well, it was in the end, barely, as the Swans continued to come.

Biggie Nyuon (two goals) was beginning to look dangerous on the back of a spike in supply numbers.

The BFNL’s leading goal scorer had been well held by Matthew Brett for the most part.

Maple, Perkins, Hooper, Luke Gray and Paddy Simpson took it up to the hosts only to fall agonisingly short.

While the Swans lost no admirers, the Devils looked sharp for periods, providing glimpses of their best and were shown the way yet again by led by star duo Brett Bewley and Billy Myers.

Darley extraordinary 16-0 run at home continues.

“Disappointing result for us. We were poor early and given a lesson at contested possession throughout the first half. Darley are a quality outfit and when the game was there to be set up, they proved just that. To our credit, we kept fronting up during the second half and our ability to keep at it got us back in the game late in the contest. Plenty to work on moving forwards.”

Scoop Reviews Week 1 Finals

Scintillating Saturday and Sunday action saw the first week of finals bring out some of the best in our 2026 premiership contenders.

A late goal from ball magnet Felix Henderson sent the Burra faithful into raptures and a second semi final showdown with Ballarat after a thrilling four-point win over North Ballarat at Alfredton Oval.

In what has been described as the game of the year so far, this qualifying final had everything.

Lead changes, clutch goals, high marks, x-factor brilliance, tireless work rates and an insatiable appetite for success but unfortunately there could only be one winner.

Alfredton Oval looked the best it had all season, glowing under the afternoon long sun, setting the scene for a clash of the ages - and it indeed it was!

Sebastopol held the advantage early extending a four-point quarter time lead to 16 at the main break. In fairness, the Roosters had their share of possession but couldn’t capitalise as the 5.6 to 8.4 score line would suggest.

North Ballarat coach Clint Proctor was busy with the magnets. Moving Sam Glover (three goals) forward, joining Isaac Lovisson (2.4) in a two-pronged aerial attack.

The move provided an immediate response as Glover’s class rose to the top with three crucial goals to eat into the margin from late in the second term to midway through the third.

Lovisson also threatened with his strong hands but his unorthodox approach at set shots came with mixed results but enough for the Roosters to earn a four-point lead at the final change. Game on!

The match simply exploded in the final term, as two league heavyweights went goal for goal, refusing to throw in the towel.

X-factor talent Jamie Quick (four goals) was timely on goal all afternoon, and bobbed up when the Roosters needed it most. He, Declyn McGuigan (two goals), Lovisson and Glover kept the Roosters in it.

Felix Henderson and Tony Lockyer were the standouts for the Burra, while the depth of impact contributors could not be underestimated.

For the Roosters, Glover and Josh Morris were the pick of the bunch in an otherwise even performance that saw them lose no admirers despite falling agonisingly short.

The minor premiers face Sunbury in a sudden death semi final who couldn’t have impressed more in their 68-point demolition job over Darley. Lions star talent Jake Sutton (Sydney VFL) will be available.

Proctor’s progressive young group will start favourites having won their two previous meets against Matty White’s Lions in 2026 by 86 (Round 4) and 29 points (Round 16).

“Epic game of country footy. Amazing to be a part of it, both sides throwing everything at it right up until the end where it could have gone either way. Great showcase for the BFNL. Strong first half from our boys, then a super 3rd quarter from North set up the quality finish. So proud of our boys stepping up when needed in the big moments. They have answered the call all year when challenged. We reset now and we look forward to Ballarat next week.”

Ballarat’s big guns led them to a comfortable 33-point win over the Melton at Marty Busch Reserve.

The win provides Ash Baker’s bevy with a prized double chance and two opportunities to reach the biggest day on the BFNL calendar. The flipside however spells a premature end to Melton’s season under third year coach Troy Scoble.

Experienced trio Alex Keath, Tristan Maple and Brad Crouch (one goal) featured prominently for the Swans while soon to be crowned Tony Lockett Medallist Biggie Nyuon won the battle of the leading forwards finishing with a game high five goals.

Fraser Perkins (two goals) was clearly the beneficiary after being rested in Round 18, alongside Crouch and Keath, providing a handful for the ‘Bloodahood’ to contain.

Paddy Simpson (three goals) continued with his consistent run of form while Zak Rinaldi (one goal) helped fill the void in the absence of his brother Lewis who missed with a cork.

Despite being held to one goal at quarter time the Swans still led the Bloods by seven points in a genuine arm wrestle craving a breakout moment or highlight.

The game opened up after quarter time as the Swans validated their superior 3rd v 6th stance on the BFNL ladder booting an accurate 11.4 to the Bloods’ 5.7 through the middle stages to set up a match winning 40-point lead at the final change.

An untimely recurrence of a hamstring injury to Bloods’ star mid Billy Crofts ahead of the halftime break essentially ended any chances of a miracle comeback as the Footscray VFL talent was hampered to a shell of his capabilities credit to him for soldiering on.

The Bloods did show some dash winning the final quarter narrowly but the bird, in this case a swan, had already flown.

Ever consistent mid Jaycob Hickey was named best for the Bloods ahead of Crofts, Joshua Stewart, Caleb Burquest, Lachlan Walker and usual suspect Jordy Cotter.

Bloods leading forward Braedan Kight booted two goals.

While the travelling assignment was always going to be tough for the Bloods, their chances were dealt a tough blow losing Adrian Monitto and Ryan Davis in their Round 18 competitive loss to Sebastopol.

The Swans on the other hand are beginning to resemble close to their best 22 despite cruising under the radar with up to five of their preferred still missing - Andrew Hooper (season). Lewis Rinaldi (test), Luke Dunstan (test), Riley Constable (test) and Thomas Simpson (VFL).

Congratulations to Swans’ link man Wyatt Squires who made his long awaited and safe return from a foot injury and recent surgery.

Squires had not played since Round 10, while it was just the second game for Rhys Perry since Round seven having struggled with an ankle issue.

Ballarat meet Sebastopol this weekend in a cracking second semi final while North Ballarat and Sunbury face off in the first semi final decider.

“Planned well and felt we rose to the occasion in the first quarter in all phases. We just did not convert opportunities that the momentum we had generated, credit to Ballarat’s defence. The game was separated in a 5-10 min burst in the second then we had to chase the game and invariably you open certain parts of the game trying to generate attack. Went to work at half time and had another strong patch in the third but Ballarat answered again. Had enough territory and opportunity generated over 20 scoring shots but the execution of Ballarat was superior and more consistent over the course of the day. I said last time Ballarat’s list build is impressive. The top 3 this year have elevated themselves. We rallied well in second half season pushing to the final siren and now our season ends with disappointment but perspective.”

Sunbury progressed to a first semi final meeting with North Ballarat after a dominant 68-point win over Darley at Darley Park.

Matty White’s Pride came to play looking to end a run of seven outs in the process against Dan Jordan’s Devils. And that they did in emphatic style.

The Lions booted 13 of the last 14 goals of the game after the Devils led by as much as 10 points early in the second quarter.

There were warning signs early when Sunbury kicked the first four goals of the game before the Devils responded with the next five - but the rest they say, is history.

Sunbury simply bullied their nemesis with superior work rate, and execution of the basic fundamentals.

Lions’ pair Daniel Johnston and Patrick Scanlon revelled in the moment booting four goals while reigning Henderson Medallist Jake Egan (two goals) led a merry dance acquiring ridiculous second half numbers in particular.

Joint captain Tyson Lever was typically at work doing his intercept thing as the Lions’ overlap in transition drained the energy levels of all men donning the black and white.

The Devils had no answers for the Lions in front of a monster crowd under bright blue skies.

Ironically there was a sea of blue at ground level in the form of Sunbury who ran riot, sensing a feast.

The Lions had many winners all over the ground, their impact, compliance and will to the contest was palpable.

Onwards and upwards for Sunbury into week two of the finals having put an end to the Devils’ title defence.

Darley would be disappointed with their last month let alone Sunday, ending their season with four straight losses while averaging just over seven goals a game (6,8,6,9).

Jordan’s boys have been labouring for some time, unable to recapture the aura that led them to 2023 and 2025 glory.

Over the last 50 years, the Devils have yet to feature in a grand final the following year after winning any one of their seven premierships.

All hamstrung Devils star pair Brett Bewley and Joel Cadman could do was watch from the sidelines.

The Lions are likely to be bolstered by the return of Jake Sutton for Sunday’s semi final assignment.

Finally, a change of luck for a Lions group under White as the Pride looks the healthiest of any time they have this season.

Unfortunately, however, the same can be said for a North Ballarat outfit waiting in the wings, keen to avoid a straight sets exit.

“A really nice way to get the finals campaign going. five changes can have an impact on a side, but the rest really gave some boys some extra life. We had to play our best game for the year to get over the old foe Darley. A few boys coming back in really hitting form at the right time. No time to celebrate that win, a trip up the highway for North awaits so we recover and get ready to go again.”

The BFNL is back and so is Scoop to preview what is set to be a hotly fought contest between Redan and Lake Wendouree at City Oval this Good Friday.

REDAN VS LAKE WENDOUREE

Last time they met - Redan 91 def. Lake Wendouree 59 (City Oval, Round 15 2022)

Visitors Lake Wendouree would have fond memories of this corresponding season opener last year when Jack Fitzpatrick's boys recorded their one and only win of the season. Lakers fans would agree, that was by all means a Good Friday!

Surely Redan, made to pay for that result all season, won't be letting that happen again under new coach Gary Learmonth.

The Lions blend of progressive youth and ageless experience will hold them in good stead to start their season with a win at home.

Nathan Dunstan and Will Madden return to bolster the ruck stocks, aiding first use to star mid Lachie George and rotating youngsters wanting to take the next step.

It's hard not to like the Lions’ forward combination of Isaac Grant, Liam Hoy, Lachie McLean, Alex Harvey and Grant Bell - all who can hit the scoreboard.

There will be questions asked of the Lakers’ defence from the get-go given George is likely to impact from centre clearance. But what the Lakers have is heart. The O'Connell boys, Jacob Coxall and the additions of big-man Tom Zampatti and experience of Michael Foster will ensure the Lions won't have it all their own way.

Both sides are vulnerable at the back and were found to be easy to score against too often last year especially against the better sides.

You would hope Lakers’ coach Jack Fitzpatrick has done some 'tidying up' back there to stem any potential bleeding. Redan coach Gary Learmonth will progress the youngsters which is sure to have its moments during the season, for better or worse.

Ballarat made a lasting impression on the return of the Under 23 Interleague concept with an entertaining 16-point win over the Hampden Football League at MARS Stadium on Saturday.

After trailing at quarter time, Ballarat answered the call under new coach and AFL Hall of Famer Anthony Koutoufides to lead the visitors at the main break by 15 points, restoring confidence and belief that a win over their past nemesis was a possibility.

It would take a collective buy-in from the hosts getting the job done given the depth of quality opposition under former AFL great and South Warrnambool product Jonathon Brown.

Sebastopol’s Riley O’Keefe (BFNL) was the deserving recipient of the Best on Ground Medal.

The rebounding defender’s decision making and composure under pressure was a real feature and not dissimilar to his Burra senior and club level team mate, Tony Lockyer.

Ballarat’s two-way running ability was significant.

The young gun’s ability to defend when required and create the overlap in transition proved a major asset the longer the game went, equating to six more scoring shots and a final margin, arguably a goal or two shy on its potential.

Clever Sunbury forward and Essendon VFL listed player Jake Sutton was a handful for the visitors to contain finishing with two goals, a tally which could have easily have been larger if not for a few misses in the last quarter.

Sunbury tall Fraser Ampulski validated his late call up tenfold.

His near lone effort shouldering the ruck duties against quality pairing Mark Marriot (Geelong VFL listed) and Ollie Bridgewater was huge.

Ampulski’s tireless will to compete enabled the rotation of navy blue and white midfielders their fair share of the ball to deny an inform, talent laden Hampden group a game on their own terms.

The Sunbury Football Netball Club have every right to be proud of their contribution with no less than six players represented, all of whom were pivotal in the outcome.

Redan’s Isaac Grant was named BFNL Captain and Bacchus Marsh’s Jack Parente his deputy.

Both led with the courage and selflessness you wish to see from your leaders.

All BFNL representatives had their moment in the sun and didn’t let their team down when it was their time to go.

Koutoufides summed up the nature of the group and the performance in the aftermath.

“You guys have really impressed me,” he said.

“I’ve only been with you for three nights training and match day, and I feel like I love you already,”

“Thank you for the opportunity, I’ve really enjoyed my time,”

The 278 game Carlton great left with a positive mark on the group.

“Don’t give up your dreams boys, I’m sure there’s a few here capable of playing in the AFL.”

Earlier in the day, the BFNL went down to Hampden by 35 points in the Under 17 representative match.

Knows how to find the footy and is capable of playing a selfless role for the coach and team. The type of player that will do whatever is asked of him. Ranks 7th for average tackles this year in the BFNL.

Riley Polkinghorne (North Ballarat)
Having a stellar season on ball with the Roosters landing eight times in the best players from his eight games. The ball magnet is averaging 32.6 disposals a game this year.

Jack Riding (North Ballarat)
Another of the dangerous progeny from the Roosters' camp. Excellent work rate and knows his way around goal. Ranks top 5 in the BFNL for goal assists and score involvements per game. Werribee VFL listed.

Josh Sparkman (North Ballarat)
Was lauded by Roosters' coach Brendan McCartney early on as a promising type who has made the adjustment to senior footy with aplomb. Hard working, running defender who uses the ball with efficency. Averaging 7.5 intercept possessions a game.

Jamie Quick (North Ballarat)
Highly skilled half forward leading the BFNL goalkicking. Also lands inside the top 10 for score involvements in the BFNL this year. Broke through into Geelong's VFL team last week and kicked a goal.

Isaac Grant (Redan)
Reigning Lions' best and Fairest winner and leading goalkicker who is leading the way again this season. Averages 24 possessions and just over two goals per game in 2023. Is on target to match 2022's achievements albeit as a predominant midfielder this year.

Nick Cushing (Redan)
Young ruckman still growing into his frame will be an important asset for the Lions in the future. Will need to be a big presence in the middle of the park. Ranks elite for hit outs to advantage this season.

Harry Lawson (Redan) 
Promising type dividing his time between GWV Rebels and Redan depending on selection. Has all the attributes to have an impact if selected in the final 22. Ranks elite for goal assists and forward 50 tackles in 2023.

Jack Bambury (Sebastopol) 
Plays beyond his years across half back, the beneficiary of time spent with Burras' gun duo Tony Lockyer and Luke Kiel. Rebounding type who reads the play well and will play an important role in transition. Ranks inside the top 15 for marks, intercept possessions and intercept marks in the BFNL this year.

Riley O’Keefe (Sebastopol) 
Key defender thriving at his post with the Burra. Will assume the number one defenders mantle when Tony Lockyer hangs up the boots. Very important, reliable player. Ranks top 3 for spoils per game in the BFNL.

Jed Hill (Sebastopol) 
Pacy midfielder, wing or small forward who loves a goal. Enjoying his time at the Burra in quality side and has an important role to play. An elite chaser amongst the Sebastopol ranks.

Jake Sutton (Sunbury)
Essendon VFL listed forward and capable match winner on his day. Quality lead up player with good hands and footy IQ. Ranked #1 in the BFNL for marks inside 50 per game.

Jake Egan (Sunbury)
Progressive midfielder improving all the time. Has found his way into the midfield group at his home club. No stranger around goal either. Ranked elite in the comp for clearances and contested possessions.

Joel Muir (Sunbury) 
Would be a strong first ruck choice if not for injury. Provides a much needed physical presence around the ground. Averaging 34 hitouts a game, landing him top 10 in the comp for the stat.

Harrison Minton-Connell (Sunbury)
One of the more in-form midfielders of the BFNL recently rewarded with Essendon VFL selection. Key addition if made available. Averages just shy of 7 score involvements a game this season in the BFNL.

Cody Brand (Sunbury)
Former Essendon AFL listed talent returned to his junior club. 200cm handful who can play either end or even pinch hit in the ruck. Ranks elite for marks, rebound 50s, marks inside 50 and goals, proving his worth both forward and back.

It's back - but no crowds, please!

In line with the easing of restrictions, the McDelivery BFLW and McDonald's Ballarat FNL junior competitions return to play this weekend. We appreciate all of our clubs, players, volunteers and families helping us keep the competition safe as we return to play.

Following the announcement of the return of senior competitions, the McDonald's Ballarat FNL is also pleased to announce a return to play for the Junior & BFLW competitions. 

Both competitions will recommence from this Sunday 1stAugust 2021 under strict COVID protocols. 

A revised fixture has been completed for both competitions that will ensure a more equitable fixture and a maximisation of games. 

Changes made to fixtures include: 

BFNL Juniors 

• Round 7 replacing Round 14 this weekend. 
• Rounds 12 & 13 will be abandoned 
• Rounds 15 (8th August) & 16 (15thAugust) will remain as originally scheduled for the junior competition. 
• Ballarat Toyota Junior Finals Series to begin on 21stAugust. 

BFLW 

• Matches this weekend will begin from Round 12 as originally scheduled for 1st August. 
• Rounds 10 & 11 will be abandoned. 
• Round 13 will remain as scheduled for 8th August 
• An extra round of home & away matches to be added for 15th August – Fixture to be advised. 
• McDelivery BFLW Finals Series to begin on Sunday 22nd August. 

Western Bulldogs Under 9’s 

The Under 9 competition will not return with current restrictions, however, the remaining rounds will look to be rescheduled when restrictions allow a return to play for this competition. 

With crowds restricted at venues under the current stage of restrictions, entry will be strictly limited to players and officials from each competing club only. Further advice will be provided from both AFL Victoria and Netball Victoria soon. 

The BFNL is excited to have competition football and netball back in the premier competition across the region.

Following the release of Victoria's 'roadmap' out of lockdown, the board of the McDonald's Ballarat FNL has, with deep regret, cancelled junior finals.

It is with deep regret that the board of the McDonald's Ballarat FNL have made the decision to cancel the finals for BFNL Junior and BFLW Youth / Junior competitions. 

This decision, therefore, ends the 2021 seasons for all grades in these competitions. Teams that finished on top of the ladder at the end of the home & away season will be recognised as the minor premiers. 

With the announcement today of the roadmap for a return to activities, it is clear that community sport will not be able to commence until a fully vaccinated rate of 80% has been achieved, expected to be around the 5th of November 2021. 

Whilst the board have allowed as much time as possible to play finals, it is now evident this is not possible under the current plan. 

This decision will at least provide certainty to all the junior players, volunteers, and families that the season has concluded.

The McDonalds Ballarat FNL wishes to make the following update regarding the second week of the 2023 BFNL Junior Finals Competition

Following the 17 Seniors Elimination Final 1 held at CE Brown Reserve between North Ballarat and Darley, the league was notified of a possible ineligible player who had not played the minimum number of games to qualify for finals in Under 17 Seniors.

Upon review it was deemed that the player in question had played 1 less game than the required amount to qualify them for 17 Seniors.

Under the BFNL By-Laws for junior finals eligibility it states on page 17 of the General Bylaws:

“A player must play in at least three matches in a grade to be eligible to play in the final series in that grade, except in the following cases:

i. Where an Underage player is selected to play in an open age side (Seniors or Reserves)

ii. Where a registered Junior player is selected to play in the Under 19 or any open age side

iii. Where a registered junior player is selected to play in a higher age group on the BFNL Competition Hierarchy (e.g., Under 15 players playing Under 17). This is not to be at the expense of a registered and available player in that age group.”

The board confirmed that the North Ballarat Football Netball Club had breached the above and have forfeited the win. This would progress Darley 17 Seniors into the second round of finals to play Redan FNC.

North Ballarat lodged details with AFL Victoria to request an appeal into the decision on Tuesday 29th of August. AFL Victoria confirmed that the request would not be referred to the Region Appeal Committee.

AFL Victoria mentioned in their response that they “are supportive of the position of the Ballarat Football Netball League Board in that their local by-laws have been applied.”

The league would like to advise all clubs that this decision has been finalised, Redan will play Darley in the 17 Seniors on Sunday 3rd of September at CE Brown Reserve.

The McDonald’s Ballarat FNL is pleased to announce the final squads for our Junior Interleague sides.

Teams will compete against Bendigo on Saturday 26^th June in Strathfieldsaye as part of the Goldfields Trophy.

The McDonald's Ballarat FNL Junior Netball Representative program is a great experience for our young netball talent. Nominations are now open to trial for the 2022/2023 representative teams.

All BFNL junior netballers who are keen to try out for our rep teams and who were born between 2006 and 2011 are encouraged to nominate via the online link below.

Dates for trials are yet to be finalised, however, trials will be held in  October/November 2022. 

This year we will have two 15 & Under Teams going to Association Champs. This gives more players an opportunity to be a part of this great program which will assist in developing skills.

Love footy and have a way with words? The BFNL Media team are seeking casual Match Day Reporters. You don't need a long CV, but you do need passion, social media and writing skills and be keen to get down to matches throughout the season.

The McDonalds Ballarat FNL, through its BFNL Media arm, has a number of opportunities for Match Day Reporters for the senior competition.

BFNL Media in 2021 is taking the next step to provide the most comprehensive coverage of community football that will ensure all supporters of the BFNL and football in general have access to one the of premier competitions in country Victoria.

Working across print, radio and digital, our Match Day Reporters will provide live Around the Grounds updates on local radio, post live score updates to our social channels, and write short match reviews for print media.

Previous experience isn't essential and the league welcomes the opportunity to support students and others aspiring to work in the exciting field of sports media.

The role of Netball Umpire Coordinator will be to support the development and growth of netball umpires across the various BFNL netball competitions. The role is ideally suited to those who have the experience and knowledge of netball umpiring that will further enhance the BFNL.

This role is part-time and for a fixed term with flexibility around the hours worked. Refer to the Position Description for more details about the role.
