2024 Bacchus Marsh Pre-Season Preview

With pre-season preparations well under way and Round 1 quickly approaching, Scoop has gone one-on-one with all 11 senior football coaches ahead of the 2024 McDonalds BFNL season.

COACH:Dennis Armfield

Previous Experience/Accolades:145 AFL games (Carlton)

ON THE RECORD

SCOOP: Great news for the Cobras obtaining your services for the coming season Dennis. I've no doubt the BFNL will also be the beneficiary. How did you find your way to Bacchus Marsh?

Dennis Armfield: Long story short, my wife grew up in Bacchus Marsh and has run a business there for 20 years - Dream Entertainment Dance Studios. It was an ideal fit for family and community connection.

SCOOP: There's an encouraging blend of youthful and experienced talent at Cobra land. Have you had a chance to see much given the Coates boys from last year have been training with Port Melbourne and Williamstown? What do you know of them over your short time?

DA: Did my due diligence. Our youth is very exciting and will help lead the Cobras in a positive direction. Not only these players but the whole group are driven to learn and grow, challenging each other for a spot in the team and raising the standards which is encouraging.

SCOOP: Are playing finals on the priority list of goals in 2024 or is further development into the young brigade atop of the list - name three priorities for your tenure...

DA: Improve on 2023 (ladder position and personal growth). To become a stronger united club across men and women's footy and netball. Making Bacchus Marsh a destination club/town and place people want to come to.

SCOOP: What will Andrejs Everitt add to the Cobras list?

DA: Development, patience, wisdom, calm, balance, x-factor.

SCOOP: What is the likelihood we'll see much of Rye Penny (Collingwood VFL listed) and what role will would he play?

DA: Intercepting back. We'll support his VFL journey wholeheartedly and do whatever we can to facilitate his progress. I selfishly hope we see him for a handful of games but for his sake, I hope we don't see him at all.

SCOOP: You won a Jim Stynes Medal during your AFL career at Carlton for your contributions to the wider community. Is that something you've always valued and maintain today? Local footy I guess is another way of giving to the community....

DA: My motto is 'live to give'. I believe we should all do our part together. Connection is an important value to me and doing the journey with others makes life enjoyable. Local footy gives me so much and I hope I can return a little back to those around me.

SCOOP: What are the chances of you playing at all this year - if high - how many games are you planning on?

DA: Definitely playing is on the card but I won't stand in the way of a kid getting a game. I played 14/18 games last year and missed only when the 'bench' coach was away. I've done all this pre-season and will likely play a 'filling' role (similar to Andrejs) wherever deemed necessary by the coaching staff and match committee.

IDENTIFIED STRENGTHS

DA: Leg speed and willingness to take a risk. The internal drive and want to learn / get better. Our forward line looks in good shape, a well-connected defensive structure and an energetic midfield.

PROJECTED IMPROVEMENT

DA: Forward structure, ball movement, competitive edge staying in games for longer.

MOST UNDER AND OVERRATED STAT IN TODAY'S LOCAL FOOTY

DA: Conversion inside 50 – Underrated, Clearances - Overrated

PRE-SEASON TRAINING

DA: Great. 50 odd numbers on the track each session pre-Christmas is very encouraging for this time of year. The group are fully trusting and invested in the program. Our strength and conditioning coach addition is also having an impact. Our leaders have been driving the standards.

PLAYER INS

Dennis Armfield (Park Orchards), Andrejs Everitt (Park Orchards), Sam Crea (Ballan), Rye Penny (Gisborne), Josh Calvitto (Dunnstown), Baden Cracknell (Dunnstown), Bailey Glascott (GSW Rovers), Cohen LeSeur (Gordon)

PLAYER OUTS

Eamon Ogden (Kyabram), Jake Long (Tullamarine), Joshua Onderwater (Western Districts), Jonathon Bissell (Macedon), Tom Gillies (retired), Dom Miessen (ACT/work)

VFL AFFILIATED PLAYERS

Rye Penny (Collingwood). Josh Huxtable (Port Melbourne training), Jack Kovacevic (Port Melbourne training), Cody Gates (Port Melbourne training), Ethan McKercher (Port Melbourne training), Isaac Nixon (Port Melbourne training), Joel Freeman (Williamstown training)

THE DRAW

SCOOP: Double ups against big guns Darley, North Ballarat and Melton will be a great challenge for Armfield's progressive group. Other home and away meets include last year’s bottom two Melton South and Lake Wendouree. Sunbury is their sixth double up in this space who are eyeing some home ground momentum in 2024. Four trips to Ballarat include Lakers (Round 2), Sebastopol (Round 5), East Point (Round 11) and North Ballarat (Round 14). Cobras will hope to be in the mix after Round 13 with North Ballarat (A), bye, Melton (H), Darley (H) and Sunbury (A) to close out their season. Tough run home.

PRACTICE MATCH SCHEDULE

March 16 v Avondale Heights (A)

March 23 v Pending opposition

IMPROVERS TIP: (OUTSIDE OF BACCHUS MARSH)

DA: East Point and Melton South (more competitive).

FLAG TIP: (OUTSIDE OF BACCHUS MARSH)

DA: North Ballarat

2024 Ballarat Pre-Season Preview

With pre-season preparations well under way and Round 1 quickly approaching, Scoop has gone one-on-one with all 11 senior football coaches ahead of the 2024 McDonalds BFNL season.

COACH:Chris Maple

Previous Experience/Accolades:2016 Western Bulldogs AFL Premiership Match Day Assistant Coach, 2014 Footscray VFL Premiership Coach.

ON THE RECORD:

SCOOP: Well Chris, a year down in charge of the Swans - what did you learn about the group and where they're at and more broadly the BFNL given you've come from an elite program in the AFL with the Western Bulldogs?

CHRIS MAPLE: We're a young team like many across the BFNL which is a positive. I just really hope they stay in the competition (not lured elsewhere). The quality of the grounds have improved a lot too since my playing days.

SCOOP: Callum Wellings (25yo, 181cm) was a great pickup ahead of last season but unfortunately he was unsighted for various reasons. Is he good to go this year after a year off?

CM: Yep, he's back in Oz and we look forward to seeing him go around through the midfield.

SCOOP: You often made reference in your post-match comment last season it was essentially a quarter here and there that was costing you dearly from gaining a result. What's the ingredient to go about rectifying that in the new season?

CM: That's the part of having a young group and clearly an area of growth for us. The new additions bring physicality and experience which will help out the younger boys in that space. Expect some speed humps a long way but I’d like to think we're heading in the right direction.

SCOOP: Tell us about Lachie Dalgleish - he reads a more than handy acquisition and the mail is he's a terrific bloke. Elaborate for us on his role...

CM: Yep your mail is right, good fella. He's arrived with an eye toward high level coaching in the future. Lachie (30yo,185cm) is well credentialled and will play a variety of roles.

SCOOP: Andrew Hooper (32yo) has been an ageless contributor for the club for some time. Apart from his forward craft we're privy seeing when he's up and about, what does he offer the young brigade off field regarding preperation and gameday?

CM: Hoops has great aspirations in the coaching space and has really grown as a leader and positive influence for our young group.

IDENTIFIED STRENGTHS

CM: Backline will be stronger, and our midfield should progress.

PROJECTED IMPROVEMENT

CM: Debuted 16 players last year so we're hopeful the youth will progress with a year of senior footy under their belts.

PRE SEASON TRAINING

CM: It has been been good. We had a month block pre-Christmas before returning on January 23.

MOST UNDER AND OVERRATED STAT IN TODAY'S BFNL FOOTY

CM: Possessions – Overrated, Repeat F50 entries - Underrated

PRACTICE MATCH SCHEDULE

Saturday March 23 v Sebastopol (A)

Thursday April 4 v Dunnstown (H, Night Match).

PLAYER INS

Lachie Dalgleish (Drysdale), Harry Butler (Carisbrook), James Carpenter (Uni Blacks, VAFA), Zak Rinaldi (Carisbrook), Bailey Fraser (Returned)

PLAYER OUTS

Bailey Vander Heuvel (Leopold), Daniel Kennedy (Retired), Lawson Prendergast (Work - Perth), Mitch McGrath (Newlyn). Sam Fisher (SMW Rovers), Tyler Constable (Work-Bendigo)

VFL AFFILIATED PLAYERS

Tristan Maple (Footscray), Angus Bade (Foostscray)

THE DRAW

SCOOP: Even draw for the Swans ranking fourth easiest. Avoid double ups with Darley and Melton who lost just four home and away games between them last year and don't see either of them after Round 5. The Swans have three trips to the east - and just one after Round 5 at Melton South. Maple's young group get 2023 bottom two sides Lake Wendouree and Melton South twice.

IMPROVERS TIP (OUTSIDE OF BALLARAT)

CM: Melton

FLAG TIP (OUTSIDE OF BALLARAT)

2024 Darley Pre-Season Preview

With pre-season preparations well under way and Round 1 quickly approaching, Scoop has gone one-on-one with all 11 senior football coaches ahead of the 2024 McDonalds BFNL season.

COACH:Dan Jordan

Previous Experience/Accolades: Former Essendon AFL Assistant Coach (Essendon 2020-21), BFNL Hall of Fame Member, Darley 2023 BFNL Premiership Coach

ON THE RECORD

SCOOP: Firstly Dan, congratulations on your flag success just two years in with the Devils. To win virtually out of a pigeon shed with home ground renovations going on suggests the group is pretty tight and able to maintain focus (won last 10 games on the trot). Rate the nature of the group given your 20+ years in footy...

DAN JORDAN: Regarding facilities - It’s what you make of it, the 'home' is essentially the group and the people within it, we think we're well led and endeavouring to be well connected. We try to focus more on the 'what haves' than the 'have nots' and allow people to feel comfortable being themselves. We think they're the key ingredients to being a good club, not the physical facilities.

SCOOP: You said dealing with expectation after two finals in 2022 would ask questions of your relatively young group. Surely defending a flag comes with its own level of raised expectation. How as a coach do you go about restoring motivation and the need to improve?

DJ: Expectations are more often external. We welcome the challenge being the hunted and are keen to stand up. The group enjoyed the successes of last year but are well aware of the work that is required to achieve. We'll need a bit of luck with injuries etc along the way and are hopeful being in the mix for a top three finish.

SCOOP: You'll have to get it done this year primarily without Mace Cousins (Geelong VFL), ruckman Lucas Impey (Western Jets) and experienced multiple premiership winning trio Shane Page, Darren Leonard and Jacob Zeestraaten. Page is the big out given he's barely 30. Soldier out, soldier in doesn't fit the Page solution. Has he simply had enough?

DJ: Teams are always evolving - it's very rare you have the same side from one year into the next. I'm excited for the opportunity that has opened up for a few of our youngsters. On (Shane) Page, he's reached a time in his footy where he thinks he's got nothing left to give. We'd love to have him around the club in some fashion.

SCOOP: There's no ceiling on what impact a fit and healthy Brady Wright (6'4') can deliver for the group. Where does he fit into the mould given he's a 'rare' tall among your best 22?

DJ: We're hoping Brady can play a Darren Leonard type role for us but we won't be rushing him given he's coming off a significant injury. While a slow integration is more likely we're excited about Brady's prospects. He's added more size and strength and we know he can certainly play.

SCOOP: You've had a relatively quiet off-season in the marketplace. Has that been by design, or has it been difficult to find the piece(s) you're after?

DJ: Bit of both. Our priority was re-signing all of our (available) players from last year’s grand final so the focus will be on improvement within.

IDENTIFIED STRENGTHS

DJ: Flexibility, adaptability, connection, pride, avenues to goal.

PROJECTED IMPROVEMENT

DJ: Young guys challenging selection - finals are often won on the back of 'bottom six' contributions.

Progression of our mid-tier players impacting games. Top end is sound.

MOST UNDER AND OVERRATED STAT IN TODAY'S BFNL FOOTY

Goalkicking accuracy – Underrated, Clearances – Overrated, the 'nature of' is more important.

PRE-SEASON TRAINING

DJ: Came back late due to Grand Final appearance. We'll ramp it up pretty quick - the players are familiar with what is required. In 2022 we worked on building fitness, 2023 teaching and now 2024 will endeavour tinkering with the plan for improvement.

PLAYER INS

Mikey Edwards (Banyule), likely more to come.

PLAYER OUTS

Darren Leonard (Retired), Shane Page (Retired), Jacob Zeestraaten (Retired), Blake Colley (Ballan), Trae Van Leith (Ballan), Billy Sullivan (Melton).

VFL AFFILIATED PLAYERS

Mace Cousins (Geelong), Bailey Young (Footscray), Lucas Impey (Williamstown), Joel Cadman (Port Melbourne training), Mitch Ward (Port Melbourne training), Will Johnson (Geelong training), Adam Azzopardi (Geelong training)

THE DRAW

SCOOP: It is a tougher H&A assignment in store for the reigning premiers. Get 4/5 remaining finalists from last year twice - Melton, North Ballarat, Sebastopol and East Point - also likely improvers Sunbury and Bacchus Marsh. A season of two halves really for Dan Jordan's men with just two games (Melton South and Lake Wendouree) in five weeks through the middle stages of the season from June 2nd to July 12th. Expect a testing season ahead for the new benchmark premiers who remain unbeaten in their previous 10 BFNL games. The Devils would be happy with a top three finish ahead of finals.

PRACTICE MATCH SCHEDULE

March 23 v Rowville (H)

April 6 v Lara (A)

IMPROVERS TIP (OUTSIDE OF DARLEY)

DJ: East Point and Ballarat

FLAG TIP (OUTSIDE OF DARLEY)

DJ: North Ballarat - more improvement to come.

2024 East Point Pre-Season Preview

With pre-season preparations well under way and Round 1 quickly approaching, Scoop has gone one-on-one with all 11 senior football coaches ahead of the 2024 McDonalds BFNL season.

COACH:Joe Carmody

PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE/ACCOLADES:Ballarat FNC Senior Coach

ON THE RECORD

SCOOP: Hey Joe - welcome back to the BFNL coaching ranks - how was the year off personally and how did you end up at the Kangas?

JOE CARMODY: Good break. Burnt out after stint at Ballarat. Unfortunately ousted in the 2022 Prelim. While I enjoyed a breather the want to coach (again) was always there. When Jackson Merrett indicated he wasn't going around again (as coach) I was approached by the club. I'm familiar with most of the group too having taught (school) or coached against them - they're a good bunch of blokes. Exciting times ahead.

SCOOP: The Kangas finished off the season well with a couple of finals wins - where do you think the boys are at?

JC: Difficult to gauge given we finished 6th. We look forward to working with our young players - fully aware that will have its ups and downs - but we're up for the challenge and fast tracking their progress.

SCOOP: The club must be rapt with a strong bodied mid like Mikitja Rottumah-Onus returning to the club. Players like him are hard to find...

JC: Fittest I’ve seen him despite an interrupted pre-season (appendix). He's an inside bull who can extract the ball - adds depth to our midfield - and will ask questions of opposition defence in one-on-one situations forward if and when required forward.

SCOOP: With Alex Molan back from the Rebels full time, your midfield stocks are on the rise. Just curious, are you in the Jordy Johnston predominately forward or mid camp? Nice problem to have..

JC: There will definitely be midfield time for Jordy but one-on-ones forward would be the ideal. Molan and Rottumah-Onus will add to our midfield options allowing JJ to spend more time forward. He's a very dangerous player.

SCOOP: Young forward Strahan Robinson rose to prominence in the second half of last year - how's he travelling?

JC: Training at GWV Rebels, and made the list. We're excited for him and welcome his return subject to availability.

IDENTIFIED STRENGTHS

JC: Running capacity - our time trials have been impressive and will aid us in transition. Our young guys are strong and can hold their ground over the ball - are very coachable and keen.

PROJECTED IMPROVEMENT

JC: Team defence. 18 man buy-in. Our ambition is to be a front half team conceding lower scores. We'll be working hard to instill the importance of that 'team' buy-in.

MOST UNDER AND OVERRRATED STAT IN TODAY'S BFNL FOOTY

JC: Marks inside 50 – Underrated, Clearances - Overrated (Post clearance possession more important)

PRE-SEASON TRAINING

JC: Started mid-November. Young guys have put their hands up on the track. Returned Jan 29. Healthy numbers (40 odd) pre-Christmas.

PLAYER INS

Mikitja Rottumah-Onus (Southern Mallee Tigers), Jesse Cairns (return o/s), Billy Jones (return o/s), Matt Rommeril (Skipton).

PLAYER OUTS

Jake Toulmin (Geelong District), Brad Whittaker (Coaching Dunnstown), Mitch Walsh (Skipton).

VFL AFFILIATED PLAYERS

N/A

THE DRAW

SCOOP: It’s an even draw for the Kangas ranked 5/11 easiest. They cop Darley, North Ballarat and Sebastopol from last year’s finals twice and a one-off meeting with Melton away. East were the surprise packet of last year’s finals series reaching the preliminary final after almost missing out on September action altogether. A finals berth again in an even comp would be a tick for Carmody in his first season in charge.

PRACTICE MATCH SCHEDULE

March 16 v Drysdale (H)

March 23 v Strathfieldsaye (H)

FLAG TIP: (OUTSIDE OF EAST POINT)

2024 Lake Wendouree Pre-Season Preview

With pre-season preparations well under way and Round 1 quickly approaching, Scoop has gone one-on-one with all 11 senior football coaches ahead of the 2024 McDonalds BFNL season.

COACH:Rohan Brown

PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE/ACCOLADES:Beaufort Senior Coach (CHFL)

ON THE RECORD

SCOOP: Congrats Rohan on your coaching appointment with the Lakers. It's been a tough couple of years for the club on the results front - what's the prevailing message or theme you're trying to instill given you're coming from a fair way back?

RB: Positive attitude moving forward. Working hard is a great place to start.

SCOOP: There's some good wraps on newcomer Jayden Wright - can we expect him to have a similar impact as he has shown at Ararat? What are his strengths?

RB: We hope so, ripper kid. He wants to play at a higher level. Jayden's a strong lad, we're really excited about he can bring to our club. Positionally - inside mid, behind the ball (CHB) 6"3, 87kg - utility essentially. Quality person who has bought in to our footy club.

SCOOP: Tall duo Tom Zampatti and Felix Fogarty show plenty of promise - how are they travelling and what roles have you an eye on for them in '24?

RB: Felix Fogarty will be up forward as an aerial target, Tom Zampatti will be our #1 ruckman and rest forward.

SCOOP: What did you know of the BFNL prior to your appointment?

RB: Coached CHFL (Beaufort) and did six months with Shane Skontra at NBC in the covid year (2020 - no footy). I'm excited to be among quality coaches, players and grounds. The whole league is in pretty good shape. Looking forward to the challenge.

SCOOP: What excites you the most about the immediate future of the Lakers ahead of the coming season?

RB: Seeing how our Under 19s come through and general progression of our young list - seeing what they can do with planning and structure. There are some ripping young, talented men at the Lakers ready to thrive, some now in the system for a couple of years.

SCOOP: I so often ask new coaches three non-negotiables you want adhered to on match day by the group. What are yours?

RB: Enjoyment, Effort, Honesty/Trust

IDENTIFIED STRENGTHS

RB: Speed, intensity at the contest.

PROJECTED IMPROVEMENT

RB: Being in games for longer, maintaining momentum. Execution. There's no ceiling - 'we make our own bed'.

PRE SEASON TRAINING

RB: Our group came back in great shape. We did some testing (2km trials) which confirmed that and we're already into match sim. Numbers on the track and support staff have been encouraging. Returned Jan 22nd.

MOST UNDER AND OVERRATED STAT IN TODAY'S LOCAL FOOTY

RB: Team involvements - 1%ers ect – Underrated, Clearance numbers, efficiency is everything - Overrated

PLAYER INS

Jayden Wright (Ararat), Bailey McKimmie (Skipton), Will Clark (Hay - ex Laker junior)

PLAYER OUTS

Flynn Loader (work - Brisbane), Jacob Coxall (Buninyong)

VFL AFFILIATED PLAYERS

N/A

THE DRAW

SCOOP: While the Lakers cop 4/6 last year finalists twice (Melton, East Point, Sebastopol, Redan) they avoid double ups with grand finalists Darley and North Ballarat. Challenging year ahead for premiership points in an improving competition. Mini win - Don't leave Ballarat until Round 8 v Melton or after Round 12 v Bacchus Marsh.

PRACTICE MATCH SCHEDULE

March 16 v South Warrnambool (A)

March 23 v Port Fairy (A)

IMPROVERS TIP (OUTSIDE OF LAKE WENDOUREE)

2024 Melton Pre-Season Preview

With pre-season preparations well under way and Round 1 quickly approaching, Scoop has gone one-on-one with all 11 senior football coaches ahead of the 2024 McDonalds BFNL season.

COACH:Troy Scoble

Previous Experience/Accolades:Geelong VFL Assistant/Line/Development Coach (2019-23), Melton South Senior Coach (2007-10).

ON THE RECORD:

SCOOP: Troy, welcome aboard - you take over a group that has seemingly had the competition mentally beat before the opening bounce, but that aura has shifted somewhat since a straight sets exit in last year’s finals. How do you go about invigorating a group to go again and a little differently I imagine under your tutelage?

TROY SCOBLE: Thats the challenge for us sure - reinvigorate the older group, educate the middle, develop the young. They're a motivated, driven group and whilst we are looking forward, not back, some do feel they left a bit of footy out there last year. Excited about supporting the group to fulfill their potential.

SCOOP: Denying the Bloods uncontested marking (primarily) was a masterstroke from coaches Travis Hodgson (2022) and Dan Jordan (2023, three times). Is there a plan to change the way you play or can we expect pretty much of the same. After all, it was only Darley and East Point that found a way last year.

TS: Expect a different style of footy - focus on our structure and an emphasis on our quality of clearance and method around the contest.

SCOOP: Did you watch much BFNL footy last year - if so, what are your thoughts on the level of competition?

TS: Saw every game. Standard is good. Teams have different sets of attributes and some real high-quality coaching.

SCOOP: Did you start making notes on opposition once aware of your appointment for season 2024?

TS: Yeah I did, more so on the style of footy teams were playing and what we need think about to combat that and challenge the competition. Was also detailed assessment of the Melton list - where we're at / what to work on etc.

SCOOP: Ben Archard and Brenton Payne are notable absentees for your 2024 campaign but you welcome back the Hickeys among a few. I guess it's a case of aerial loss for ground ball gain. How do you see it?

TS: Agree totally. Running capacity over aerial regardless of talent we will ensure we have a greater balance and flexibility for the type of footy we want to play.

SCOOP: What will be the three non-negotiables playing under Troy Scoble?

TS: Run, Use the ball well, Team first attitude.

SCOOP: The Devils got you three times last year. They're the new yardstick - share a weakness of theirs with the broader BFNL that will help find a way through.

TS: I thought Darley were in great shape to win it a long way out, they are coached so well. Any vulnerabilities if I have to pick an area - maybe scoring. Defensively and their work around the contest and clearance through the midfield, you don't see much better.

IDENTIFIED STRENGTHS

TS: Running ability, Balance and depth of the list (talls and smalls). United, well driven local group.

PROJECTED IMPROVEMENT

THE DRAW

SCOOP: Rated second EASIEST draw in the comp with double ups against just two of remaining five finalists from last year (Darley, North Ballarat). Other double up meetings include Melton South, Lake Wendouree, Bacchus Marsh and Sunbury). On the draw alone, there should be no excuses. Expecting the Bloods again to secure a top three finish after two previous H&A Minor Premierships.

2024 Melton South Pre-Season Preview

With pre-season preparations well under way and Round 1 quickly approaching, Scoop has gone one-on-one with all 11 senior football coaches ahead of the 2024 McDonalds BFNL season.

COACH:Travis Hodgson

PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE/ACCOLADES:Sunbury Senior Coach, Bacchus Marsh Senior Coach (2017 Premiership), Hall of Fame - Ovens & Murray FNL

ON THE RECORD

SCOOP: Well Hoggy, your third BFNL coaching appointment in nine years - what appealed to you most taking on the role with the Panthers?

TRAVIS HODGSON: I love a challenge. I've never gone to a club as a player or coach that was already in the finals, it holds no appeal to me. (Melton) South are determined to improve and I’m committed to playing my role helping facilitate that. I really enjoy the BFNL also, great people, elite playing surfaces and high-quality coaches.

SCOOP: Couple of top end quality signings gives you a spine to work around. Share a couple of your early goals at the Panthers given you're coming from a fair way back...

TH: It’s pretty tough to set goals with so many variables. Yep, we're coming from a long way back and how good the new players end up performing and the level of improvement we get from the existing group are unknown that will have a fair say on how competitive we become. Coming off an average losing margin of 158 points (per game) our goals won't be based around win/loss at all. We could improve 100 points and still be winless. They will be 'in game' goals, KPI's that will show our level of progress regardless of win/loss.

SCOOP: What do you consider the blue print of BFNL footy - style/requirements/non-negotiables etc?

TH: Contested ball differential, post clearance possession, efficient ball use, repeat inside 50's and an ability to convert in front of goal are all very important. Obviously, the ability to take these things away from the opposition are just as important.

SCOOP: Rate the importance of results versus development for the club ahead of your first season in charge?

TH: Establishing a good football program is the most important thing at the moment. Developing players and style/system that can have us more competitive and stay in games for longer. If I’m being completely honest, building condition/raising fitness levels and training standards is our starting point.

Developing the right traits on the training track is the start of developing winners and we are still in that phase so they're the only results I’m chasing. Still a lot of work to be done before we're winning games.

SCOOP: In your short time with the Panthers how's the welcoming been? What do you know of the club that you didn't know before?

TH: Welcoming has been nothing short of A-Grade. I've always enjoyed going to Melton South - they value the social side of football and that's mutual.

I've been surprised by the genuine passion that those involved have for their club, the players, officials and supporters. It's a great starting point for a footy club for at the end of the day, heart and soul people at clubs are the club and Melton South have plenty of them.

IDENTIFIED STRENGTHS

TH: Statistically there are none if I’m being honest. We've been comprehensively beaten in everything other than numbers without the ball. Our big strength is the loyalty and unity of the core group to stay together after last season and the determination of all at the club to become competitive again.

PROJECTED IMPROVEMENT

TH: Conditioning (pre-season), fitness and better execution of the fundamentals. We're hopeful some decent recruits and added height in particular areas will help stiffen 'the spine'.

MOST UNDER AND OVERRATED STAT IN TODAY'S BFNL FOOTY

TH: Repeat Inside 50s and goalkicking conversion – Underrated, Clearance and stoppage numbers - Overrated

PRE-SEASON TRAINING

TH: Our numbers (on the track) have been exceptional compared to previous years. And I’ve got to give full credit to the players for their buy-in and desire to develop. Our execution of the fundamentals still has a long way to go and until we improve considerably in that area our system will break down. We understand that, know what we need to do, and are prepared to do it.

PLAYER INS

Anthony Wilson (Pembroke OS, SA), Patrick Veszpremi (Woorinen), Stuart Hobijen-Allen (Airport West), Ryder Rousch (Sunbury), Jayden Welch (Broadford), Matthew Nottman (Hepburn), Darby Schilder (Modawarre)

PLAYER OUTS

Aydin Reilly (St Kilda City), Cassius White (St Kilda City), Tevita Hellet-Tuali'i (St Kilda City), Moevao Lega-Frost (St Kilda City), Kelsey Rameka (St Kilda City), Jeremy Petaia (St Kilda City).

VFL AFFILIATED PLAYERS

Darby Schilder (Geelong VFL)

THE DRAW

SCOOP: Five trips to Ballarat won't make the Panthers efforts to bounce any easier but avoiding double ups with grand finalists Darley and North Ballarat is a bonus. New coach Travis Hodgson will have two meetings with his former club Sunbury which will be interesting. While it's an easier draw on paper than last year for the Panthers, they're coming from a long way back. Cross town rivals Melton in Round One will be a tough ask after the Bloods’ straight set finals exit in 2023.

PRACTICE MATCH SCHEDULE

March 2 v Wodonga Raiders (A)

March 16 v Hoppers Crossing (A)

March 23 v Romsey (H)

IMPROVERS TIP (OUTSIDE OF MELTON SOUTH)

TH: Sunbury (5 wins, 2022 - 8 wins 2023) and Bacchus Marsh after their strong finish to 2023 with their very talented kids can both continue to progress.

FLAG TIP (OUTSIDE OF MELTON SOUTH)

TH: North Ballarat. So good at the business end last season without winning.

2024 North Ballarat Pre-Season Preview

With pre-season preparations well under way and Round 1 quickly approaching, Scoop has gone one-on-one with all 11 senior football coaches ahead of the 2024 McDonalds BFNL season.

COACH:Brendan McCartney

Previous Experience/Accolades:Western Bulldogs Senior Coach 2012-14

ON THE RECORD

SCOOP: Well Macca, so close last year - your impact at the club with organic development over your three years has ticked all the boxes. When do results start to take precedent (to an extent) over pure development. Should that even be a thing at local level in your opinion?

Brendan McCartney: A good coaching program is developing winners. The learnings and education that comes with loss (while not ideal) are significant. I'm as competitive as anyone but you can't afford to dwell on loss to move forward. When everybody is heading in the right direction, good things will happen.

SCOOP: The club is not shy on talent and were all available (bar Tom Hotchin) for last year’s grand final. Are there any missing pieces (ideally) that would see the club take the next level?

BM: The missing piece is further development and maturity. The boys did an amazing job last year, they dug in and had a crack every week and were in all bar one or two games.

SCOOP: Three years in and heading into a fourth - give us your thoughts on the level of quality in the BFNL - would it stack up against other premier country leagues?

BM: Just below top shelf but definitely I would like to think we're in the top third going around. Our teams have been very competitive against GFL teams for example over recent years (practice matches).

SCOOP: Could the BFNL have a season where every team plays each other twice or do you think that's too long given it's part time nature. What would be your version of ideal?

BM: Anything with a planned strategy is doable. Variables, ie salary cap would need reviewing and naturally the general cost to clubs and operation of the season would be more expensive. Ideally, not beyond the realms of possibility.

SCOOP: I know how highly you rate Tom Hotchin who has had a wretched run with 2 ACL setbacks, can we expect to see him at any stage impacting the forward line?

BM: Unlikely but we're rapt to have added him into the coaching ranks. Tom is a North Ballarat person, and the players love him.

SCOOP: Tell us about exciting young and new additions Noah Cockerill and Mal White...

BM: Both have been in pathway programs. Cockerill (Gold Coast academy) made his senior debut as 15yo up in Cairns and has been playing against men for the last three years down back. He's a big strong kid. White (Geelong Falcons) is a super competitive, tough, athletic midfield type who played finals with the Falcons last year.

IDENTIFIED STRENGTHS

BM: Pressure, fit and strong.

PROJECTED IMPROVEMENT

BM: Offensively more adventurous. Added depth and height in key areas.

MOST UNDER AND OVERRATED STAT IN TODAY'S BFNL FOOTY

BM: Inside 50s – Underrated, Contested ball numbers (differential is the key) - Overrated

PRE-SEASON TRAINING

BM: We're a fit, strong running team. We just had the five sessions before Christmas (given played off in grand final) Returned Feb 1.

PLAYER INS

Noah Cockerill (Cairns), Dakin Morris (Russells Creek), Malachi White (Geelong Falcons), Brendan Howard (Beaufort), Liam Farley (Traralgon), Kayne Lewis (Hastings), Joey Symonds (returning).

PLAYER OUTS

Josh Chatfield (Deer Park), Isaac Lovisson (doubtful - Punting American football)

VFL AFFILIATED PLAYERS

Jack Riding (Werribee), Jamie Quick (Werribee), Sam Glover (Collingwood)

THE DRAW

SCOOP: While there's not much in it North Ballarat do have the third hardest draw according to my formula. Double ups with Darley, Melton, East Point and Redan including four trips to the East will challenge McCartney and his young group. Byes in first and last rounds can be interpreted as you see fit (plus or minus). Last year's runners-up H&A season begins in Round 2 v Darley before a road trip in Round 3 to face Melton. Will want to be up and about early. While any bit of luck for North Ballarat will surely be earned this far out, you would assume the Roosters are finals bound again with further improvement under McCartney expected.

2024 Redan Pre-Season Preview

With pre-season preparations well under way and Round 1 quickly approaching, Scoop has gone one-on-one with all 11 senior football coaches ahead of the 2024 McDonalds BFNL season.

COACH:Gary Learmonth

PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE/ACCOLADES:Former Darley Senior Coach (2007-11)

ON THE RECORD

SCOOP: Let's start by addressing the elephant in the room. What hole did losing arguably your best player and Captain Isaac Grant, who is still in his early 20s, to Hepburn?

GARY LEARMONTH: It's not ideal. You can't replace him with one player. Darley proved last year they were able to cope / find a way without (Nick) Rodda and (Dylan) Landt. We're hopeful he'll be back sometime in the future.

SCOOP: There was a lot to like about the next generation of Lions coming through - are they far off impacting games on a week in, week out basis?

GL: We hope so, they're about to blossom with 20+ games in but they're still under 19. (Rory) Gunsen and (Marty) Boyer especially are exciting prospects. So too Kye Jess (back from the GWV Rebels) who will add to our midfield with (Liam) Farnsworth and (Harry) Lawson to continue to take further steps to being top line senior players.

SCOOP: Redan have beaten Darley twice in consecutive seasons on the road - what's the secret downing the reigning premiers who are on a 10-0 run going into a new season...

GL: Taking your opportunities.

SCOOP: There's some spruik around new recruit Lachie Bond. Tell us a little bit about him, what to expect and where he fits into the side?

GL: Good size 190cm, athletic, key forward, pinch mid, exciting, impressive highlights reel. Won Newton& Chilwell’s goalkicking the last three seasons.

SCOOP: Lachie George has been a mainstay quality mid/forward for the club over the last few seasons. In the absence of Grant do you expect him to return as a high minute mid or will you blood another youngster through there with George the support role given his latter years?

GL: Expect more midfield time for Lachie but we'll endeavour to share the load in the absence of (Isaac) Grant.

IDENTIFIED STRENGTHS

GL: Speed, kicking ability.

PROJECTED IMPROVEMENT

GL: Defensive focus aiming for more stability down back. Also (Brandon) Green, (Lachie) Bond and (Marty) Boyer will provide us with genuine aerial targets forward.

MOST UNDER AND OVERRATED STAT IN TODAY'S BFNL FOOTY

GL: Final Score – Underrated, Free kick count - Overrated

PRE-SEASON TRAINING

GL: Pre Xmas bit of fun getting together / bonding with some focus on pressure. Returned January 23.

PLAYER INS

Lachie Bond (Newton & Chilwell), Joe Black (De La Salle), Brandon Green (Waubra), Zac Mortlock (Natte Bealiba)

PLAYER OUTS

Isaac Grant (Hepburn), Liam Hoy (Newlyn), Jarret Giampaolo (Newlyn), Tom Lamb (Rokewood).

VFL AFFILIATED PLAYERS

Cooper Craig Peters (Footscray), Wil Madden (Essendon), Lachie Bond (Geelong)

THE DRAW

SCOOP: While the Lions’ draw ranks 3rd easiest there are no guarantees. Double ups with the bottom three sides from 2023 (Melton South, Lake Wendouree, Ballarat) helps and avoiding Melton and Darley twice won't harm the mission. Other double ups include North Ballarat, Sebastopol and Sunbury. Three evenly spread trips to the east with Darley, where the Lions have won last two fixtures at Darley Park, Bacchus Marsh and Sunbury. Should, again, be in the middle four range (5th-8th) at the business end.

PRACTICE MATCH SCHEDULE:

March 16 v Cohuna (A)

March 23 v Drysdale (H)

2024 Sebastopol Season Preview

With pre-season preparations well under way and Round 1 quickly approaching, Scoop has gone one-on-one with all 11 senior football coaches ahead of the 2024 McDonalds BFNL season.

COACH: Tony Lockyer

PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE/ACCOLADES: BFNL Interleague rep and former North Ballarat Roosters VFL

ON THE RECORD

SCOOP: Hi Tony, would it be fair to say that describing you as the 'new' coach of Sebas is a bit of a stretch given your long association as a leader of the Burra or are you expecting the role to throw 'new' things you weren't aware of in the coaching caper?

TONY LOCKYER: Stepping away from Captain and becoming the Head Coach offers an entirely new perspective for me. It will bring different challenges and experiences but nothing I’m not ready for. Jimmy Driscoll coming onboard as our Senior Assistant brings a fresh set of eyes for us in the coaching department.

SCOOP: There's no denying the Burras' list bats as deep as any but zero wins over Melton since the 2019 Prelim or Darley under Dan Jordan suggest that you've finished where you deserve. Do you think the club has underachieved or just been externally overrated?

TL: Yep agree, we just weren't consistent over the year. Our best was hard to beat, we just didn't produce it enough. A poor game in the first elimination final meant we dropped out earlier than we felt we were capable of. Looking at the big picture, we're extremely proud of the position the club is in today.

SCOOP: You lose the go to X-factor duo in James Keeble (16 goals, comp rank 41 in 2023) and Hugo Papst (29 goals, comp rank 14 in 2023). Both have delivered around goal more often than not when needed. Who fills the hole next time you're in need of such impact?

TL: You said it yourself, our lists bats deep. Genuinely excited about the opportunity for the new wave of talent to lead the forward line. Some games last year where James and Hugo didn’t feature, we kicked some of our big scores. We will miss them but there is plenty of firepower ready to go.

SCOOP: Werribee duo Jay Dahlhaus and Jesse Clark remain at the Burra which is a plus. Are they primarily Werribee required players, or can we expect to see more of them in 2024?

TL: Supporting their VFL aspirations is our priority. Ideally, they feature at Werribee every game, if we see them in blue and gold well, that's a bonus. We are fortunate to have them identify Sebastopol as a club that aligns with their aspirations. They absolutely love being involved and we love them sharing their experience whether it's popping into training or a game. Quality lads.

SCOOP: You missed Luke Kiel in the finals with a broken leg. He's had some issues post-surgery unfortunately, stalling his rehab. How's he shaping up and when do you expect we'll see him in full flight again in the Burra colors?

TL: 'Kiely' has shown some tremendous resilience since breaking his leg in the last round. No expectations on his time frame, just extremely pleased to see him back moving around. He's an outstanding character and player and his presence alone lifts our entire group.

SCOOP: Something has to change for the Burra to break their flag drought - what's the number one thing that's been lacking given you're not shy on talent?

TL: Nothing drastic. Being more consistent over the year will give us a better chance for things to go our way at the end. Two narrow grand final losses could have quite easily been a different story. Being at the top end of the table consistently in recent times means we are doing a lot right. We will focus on what is in our control and let the outcomes take care of themselves.

IDENTIFIED STRENGTHS

TL: Well-balanced across the ground.

PROJECTED IMPROVEMENT

TL: Consistency in our performances. Improvement from the existing list is exciting.

PRE-SEASON TRAINING

TL: Outstanding so far, young players driving incredible standard.

MOST UNDER AND OVERRATED STAT IN TODAY'S BFNL FOOTY

TL: Efficiency – underrated, Possessions - overrated

PLAYER INS

Mitch Johnson (Glenthompson)

PLAYER OUTS

James Keeble (Boort), Hugo Papst (Horsham), Arnold Kirby (Woorinen)

VFL AFFILIATED PLAYERS

Jay Dalhaus (Werribee), Jesse Clark (Werribee)

THE DRAW

SCOOP: Rated easiest draw in the comp. Get the bottom three sides from last year twice (Melton South, Lakers, Ballarat) and avoid double ups with 2023 runners up North Ballarat and nemesis Melton, who they’ve not beaten since 2019. Just two trips to the east for the home and away season won't hurt their cause either. No excuses. Surely finals bound, but how high they finish will be up to them.

PRACTICE MATCH SCHEDULE

March 16 v Sandhurst

March 23 v Ballarat

IMPROVERS TIP (OUTSIDE OF SEBASTOPOL)

TL: Bacchus Marsh to continue their trajectory and loving the news coming out of Melton South. (I'm) excited to watch them this year.

FLAG TIP (OUTSIDE OF SEBASTOPOL)

TL: Darley - great side with great leaders.

2024 Sunbury Pre-Season Preview

COACH:Matt White

Previous Experience/Accolades:153 AFL Games with Richmond & Port Adelaide, Coburg VFL Line Coach 2022-23

ON THE RECORD

SCOOP: Matt, welcome in to the BFNL coaching ranks, I trust you'll enjoy your time here. The Lions have been the enigma of the competition really for the last two seasons. Beat eventual premiers Melton in 2022 before missing finals and tested all bar Darley for the most part in 2023 and missed the September action again. Where do you start?

MATT WHITE: With the stock we have, aided with a change of direction, it’s a no looking back mentality to be honest. (We're) confident a combination of 'old and new school' pride for the club (and themselves) will regain the desired connection.

SCOOP: What style of footy can we expect to see from the group that will give your proud club every chance of returning to finals?

MW: Exciting.

SCOOP: Coaching stocks have risen over recent years in the BFNL and has proven talent alone is no guarantee of a win on match day. Experience is now in abundance. Who makes up your support network for 2024?

MW: Ex-Sunbury Premiership player Pat Caris (Ruck coach), Matty Power, and Corey Mobilio (ACL injury prompted footy analysis role)

SCOOP: The Clarke Oval used to be a fortress for the Lions - is that theory just a nonsense in footy or can that be a real thing essentially reclaimed as by the club?

MW: This is our plan. Sunbury is my hometown club back then it was the case (fortress). Looking to recapture the notion.

SCOOP: Tell us about your new blokes - Dean Muir, Ben Eales, Jordan Tentonello, Ben Cameron and Brock Landt and what they will bring...

MW: Muir - Voice, competitive smarts - mid/back. Eales - competitive beast, big boy, forward/ruck. Tontenello - classy mid, lean 6'1" highly skilled. Cameron - elusive half forward/mid. Landt - bullish, big, bodied mid.

IDENTIFIED STRENGTHS

MW: Leg speed. Impressive half forward line.

PROJECTED IMPROVEMENT

MW: All round, no ceiling.
