After the bye weekend the action is back this Saturday with a number of tantalising contests set to be on display across the competition.

Scoop looks ahead to the Round 9 schedule.

  • Bacchus Marsh

  • vs

  • Melton South

SATURDAY JUNE 17TH - 2.15PM @ MADDINGLEY PARK

Last time they met – Melton South 35 def. by Bacchus Marsh 67 (Melton Recreation Reserve, Round 13 2022)

Expect the Cobras to make it back-to-back wins when they host the struggling Panthers.

The club is hopeful Cobra fans will turn out in large numbers to witness their second win of the season coinciding with their annual "Fight the Beast" MND Fundraiser where a selected group of Cobra faithful take the plunge down the slide into the icy waters below for the worthy cause.

Despite the Cobras one win season to date, new coach Jason Williams has been relatively pleased with the effort of his under manned group for the most part, giving every indication a big win against the Panthers is on the cards.

If the Cobras midfield can get on top of the visitors early, former Captain Jake Owen can look forward to a big day in front of the sticks.

Any returns for the home side from the AFL's Under 18 pathway competition will only make the Panthers task more difficult as they strive for a first loss of the season under 100 points.

Scoop’s tip: Bacchus Marsh

  • East Point

  • vs

  • Lake Wendouree

SATURDAY JUNE 17TH - 2.15PM @ EASTERN OVAL

Last time they met – Lake Wendouree 90 def. by East Point 117
(CE Brown Reserve, Round 16 2022)

Seventh placed East Point must win and win well when they host the Lakers.

While Jackson Merrett's boys are knocking on the door of the top six, they sit two games and another 34% behind the fifth placed side in Sunbury. East Point will be hopeful a win will be enough to replace sixth placed Redan who face a testing meet with Sebastopol.

Given the departure of Lakers’ coach Jack Fitzpatrick last week, history says a spike in effort more often follows from the playing group, eager to impress off a fresh start.

Merrett will be hoping to put this game to bed early and deny the one-win Lakers any momentum. For the longer the Lakers remain in the game, the less percentage gain the dangerous Kangas will accumulate.

While the likely match result will not surprise, it will be the nature of the projected Kangas win that will attract the greatest attention.

Scoop’s tip: East Point

  • North Ballarat

  • vs

  • Darley

SATURDAY JUNE 17TH - 2.15PM @ MARS STADIUM

Last time they met - Darley 100 def. North Ballarat 82
(Darley Park, Round 18 2022)

Despite the Devils’ impressive 7-0 run on the road, this match-up looms just as much a danger game for the ladder leaders as it does the hosts.

The Roosters win/loss record under Brendan McCartney at Mars Stadium sits at 14-3, giving every indication a 15th win would not surprise, with their chances set to be buoyed by the likely return of marquee signing Stewart Crameri from injury.

And, when you consider the potential influence of Werribee VFL listed Jack Riding and current BFNL leading goalkicker Jamie Quick (25 goals) forward of centre, the Roosters pose a real handful.

Furthermore, Dan Jordan's boys will have to be at their best around the coal face denying in-form midfield duo Cam McCullum and Riley Polkinghorne first use out of stoppage. The visitors will be without heart and soul inside mid, Luther Baker (hamstring), and will count on an impact contribution from their promoted soldier.

The contest between two of the more astute operators off field with the magnets could also play a role in the outcome. McCartney and Jordan similarly prefer process over match ups - just who gets it done, a game on their terms for longer will surely earn the four points.

The Devils, led by Brett Bewley, Billy Myers, Matthew Brett and Shane Page, have done everything right thus far but something tells me, this game in particular, they're cherry ripe for the taking.

Scoop’s tip: North Ballarat

  • Ballarat

  • vs

  • Sunbury

SATURDAY JUNE 17TH - 2.15PM @ ALFREDTON OVAL

Last time they met - Ballarat 112 def. Sunbury 76
(Alfredton Oval, Round 17 2022)

League improvers Sunbury will be looking to consolidate their place in the top six with a win on the road over Ballarat.

Sure, they'll have to do it without their Captain Tyson Lever and midfielder Mitch Lewis but you're likely to find nearly all sides are shy of their best 22 with the season eight rounds in.

While experienced Swans forward Andrew Hooper (22 goals) poses the Lions greatest threat causing an upset on the goal front, the visitors seemingly hold the aces covering the former Western Bulldog.

Lions’ trio Jake Sutton (17 goals), Cody Brand (14 goals) and ageless go-to-man Leigh Brennan (10 goals) provide enough spread in the front half getting it done on the scoreboard even if Hooper has his way.

Lions’ newcomers Josiah Garisto, RIvva Karpany and Brand are beginning to gel with their team mates and will continue to build on that synergy into the second half of the season.

An all important sixth win beckons for the Lions who will look to start well having trailed at the half in their previous three games (Redan, Bacchus Marsh, Darley).

Sunbury aside, Saturday provides a young Ballarat outfit with another opportunity to ply their trade under coach Chris Maple with an eye on staying in games for longer.

Sunbury will be stiff opposition and are set to start warm favorites to make it a hattrick of wins ahead of another road trip and tougher assignment against Sebastopol in Round 10.

Scoop’s tip: Sunbury

  • Redan

  • vs

  • Sebastopol

SATURDAY JUNE 17TH - 2.15PM @ CITY OVAL

Last time they met - Redan 35 def. by Sebastopol 87
(City Oval, Round 12 2022)

Redan host Sebastopol in an all-important game as both sides aim to keep the wolves from the door. The Lions cling to sixth place on the BFNL table ahead of East Point, who are knocking, while the Burra aim to stay in touch with the top two.

If Sebastopol are fair dinkum and play to their strengths, they should be too good for Redan despite some genuine resistance in Jarrett Giampaolo's milestone 250th game (Congratulations!).

Again, the Lions will have to sweat on the VFL selections of Cooper Craig Peters (Footscray) and Will Madden (Essendon) and have their fingers crossed on whether crucial mid Lachie George is ready to make a return.

Veteran Liam Hoy will miss again. In a nutshell, the Lions fall shy on experience and polish in the absence of the aforementioned to sway an upset result.

For the Burra, they’ll be seeking to broaden their avenues to goal. Hugo Papst (14 goals) has been a real find hitting the scoreboard in a support role for Toby Hutt (20 goals). Too often, Tony Lockyer (8 goals) is the Burras saving grace at either end. What a player. You wouldn't think eight rounds in only Papst and Hutt have kicked more goals.

Despite having played all bottom four sides (4 wins between them), the Burra rank 5th for shots on goal and the same for points scored despite their #1 ranking for goal accuracy.

Clearly, they remain a work in progress, which is a dangerous thought for the remainder of the competition.

SATURDAY JUNE 15TH - 2.15PM @ CE BROWN RESERVE

- BFNL MATCH OF THE ROUND LIVE WITH FULL COMMENTARY 2PM VIA BFNL MATCH CENTRE -

Last time they met - Melton South 60 def. by Lake Wendouree 162 (Melton Recreation Reserve, Round 5 2023)

To suggest both sides need a win is an understatement.

For the Lakers, Saturday will mark 400 days since their las win, albeit a 102-point routing of the Panthers who will hit 100 weeks since their last on field success, a six-point win over the Lakers in their corresponding Round 9 fixture way back in 2022.

For one relieved outfit, the run of outs ends this weekend.

With all respect to Travis Hodgson and the Panthers, they're not in the same conversation as the Lakers despite sharing the same 'zero win' season to date.

The Lakers can boast mini wins, equating to four winning quarters from their 32, the Panthers are 0/28.

While scoring and defending has been a struggle for both sides, it's the Lakers who hold the advantage averaging 21 points MORE per game.

There's a similar pattern on the defensive front with Lakers conceding 33 points on average LESS than the Panthers.

Here's hoping the BFNL's Match of the Round is full of goals and game defining moments - enough for one team at least to savour in celebration and song.

It's all about making the most of an opportunity that beckons for these two sides in front of a keen viewing audience. Given the current landscape, who knows when the next victory salute will come.

For The Record
Despite ranking 3rd (Lakers) and 4th (Panthers) for average hitouts per game, it does not correlate to other aerial gains with the clubs ranking 10th and #11th in the competition for contested marks and intercept marks.

Lakers’ utility Bailey Thompson has 16 (comp rank #10) of the Lakers’ 54 season goals (30 %).

Scoop’s tip
Lake Wendouree

  • Redan

  • vs

  • East Point

SATURDAY JUNE 15TH - 2.15PM @ CITY OVAL

Last time they met - Redan 78 def. by East Point 115 (City Oval, Round 12 2023)

It felt all clubs welcomed the Kings Birthday break, but if there was one I had to nominate as a possible exception, it would most certainly be East Point.

Since the Kangas’ bye in Round 2 they've won six games on the trot inflicting Melton and Sunbury with their only losses on the way.

Over the period Joe Carmody's Kangas have averaged near 114 points per game, conceding just 50.5 (avg per game) in the process.

If Gary Learmonth's Redan were looking for flaws in the Kangas camp, maybe something as simple as a break in continuity for the Kangas could provide an edge, especially early.

If the Lions could in fact get the jump, momentum can do wonderous things, especially for a young group that has double figure representation from their Under 19 and Under 17 stocks.

On the flipside I fear for a young Lions group the break has invigorated the Kangas even further.

Their best is very good.

We've known that at the coal face and forward of the ball for a while, but the assurance found now behind the ball in the name of Jacob Brown and Jackson Merrett gives a new look for the Kangas despite their familiarity and experience.

Bryson McDougall, Strahan Robinson and Jack Jeffrey make up just part of the problems that lie ahead for the Lions given the Johnston brothers, Mickitja Rottumah-Onus and Joe Dodd's form through the midfield.

Needless to add, all are goalkicking mids (27 goals combined).

Learmonth will look for further progress from his young group as another timely footy audit presents in the name of East Point.

Excited for the potential debut of star recruit Lachie Bond (foot) who has not been seen since his four goal highlights reel against Drysdale in a pre-season practice match.

Lachie McLean (knee) who hasn't played all season is also in the mix for a return in a possible double boost for the Lions.

For The Record
While East Point rank #1 for average clearances per game (Redan #8) and #2 for contested ball (Redan #10), Lions midfielder Khy Jess is currently the #1 ranked player in the BFNL for (avg) contested possessions (22 per game).

Scoop’s tip
East Point

  • North Ballarat

  • vs

  • Ballarat

SATURDAY JUNE 15TH - 2.15PM @ MARS STADIUM

Last time they met - North Ballarat 79 def. Ballarat 40 (Mars Stadium, Round 12 2023)

If Chris Maple's young Swans have any aspirations toppling North Ballarat at Mars Stadium, a good start hitting the scoreboard will be paramount.

The hosts have won 21/25 games at the venue since Brendan McCartney took over in 2021.

Ironically Ballarat (2022) was one of those four sides over the journey to upset the narrative, but it will be a much younger Swans outfit endeavouring to upset the winning trend of the Roosters (at home) and the pattern of conviction that comes with it.

Just scoring against the miserly North Ballarat defence has been a struggle for all opponents at Mars Stadium.

Since the start of 2023 the Roosters are 10 wins, two losses, conceding an average just shy of 48 points per game.

Given the cooler conditions forecasted, expect goals, especially for the visitors to come at a premium.

Clearly an improvement on the Swans effort here last year will earmark the bare minimum of expectation, no doubt the experienced Maple won't be beaten on what he already learnt here last year.

The Swans did lead at quarter time on that occasion and were within four points at the half.

The old 'better for longer' adage could not have been more fitting in the aftermath as McCartney's army extended after the break booting seven goals to two.

In the here and now, can the Swans marking game unsettle North Ballarat who are so accountable behind the ball?

The Swans will want to ensure their link up by foot is in order to find a way through especially in the absence of Rhett Montgomery (SANFL).

The Swans are not without a prizefighter’s chance, but I expect the pressure from the hosts at the coalface to prove the overwhelming difference.

The Roosters still have a few important cogs to return - namely Jamie Quick and Simon McCartin. Their presence only enhances the Roosters 'warm favorites' tag.

For The Record
Ballarat rank #1 for average marks per game (103), North Ballarat 10th (67). On the flipside North Ballarat rank #2 for clearances (48.3), Ballarat 7th (42.9)

Scoop’s tip
North Ballarat

  • Sunbury

  • vs

  • Sebastopol

SATURDAY JUNE 15TH - 2.15PM @ CLARKE OVAL

Last time they met - Sebastopol 87 def. Sunbury 60 (Marty Busch Reserve, Round 10 2023)

The King’s Birthday break was timely for these two sides amid a climbing injury toll ahead of their Round 9 clash at the Clarke Oval.

While the Burras’ on field woes, largely beyond their control, has attracted varying degrees of scrutiny, Sunbury copped some misfortune of their own with injuries to Mitch Lewis, Jake Egan, Nathan Doyle and earlier, season ending ACL tear for Tom Scanlon.

Ben Cameron (Coburg) and Harry Minton-Connell (Williamstown) remain in the VFL.

The loss of personnel surely played a role in the Lions’ first loss of the season on the road against the Kangas in Round 8.

Needless to add, Matty White's group was gallant in defeat despite trailing at every change.

Conceding periods of four and five goals in succession really was the difference.

Just what resemblance of each side’s best 22 we see on Saturday will surely play its own part but given the depth of the Lions and season returns of the Burra to date on the win/loss front, it's hard to entertain a conversation in the 'upset' camp.

But that notion will account for very little to Burra leader Tony Lockyer who is fully aware of where his team is at.

You have to admire the popular veteran having made little reference to the changes in personnel, that has clearly impacted the recent perennial finalists.

Sebastopol will arrive in Sunbury with every intention of winning, despite its unlikelihood.

Darley coach Dan Jordan gave the Burra some encouragement after the Devils’ 19-point win in Round 8 suggesting Lockyer's group will test, if not upset a few sides on the way home.

For Matthew White's Sunbury, it will be all about maintaining their good habits that led them to a promising 6-1 start to the season ahead of a Round 10 blockbuster against Melton.

Special mention to Lions’ forward Mitch McLean who is having a breakout season. His 24 goals to date (comp rank #4) has been complemented with 20 forward 50 tackles (Comp rank #1).

For The Record
Sunbury rank 1st for Handballs (152.7 avg per game), Sebastopol 6th (128.6). Sebastopol rank 3rd (13.4) for Back 50 tackles, Sunbury 10th (8)

Scoop’s tip
Sunbury

  • Melton

  • vs

  • Bacchus Marsh

SATURDAY JUNE 15TH - 2.15PM @ MACPHERSON PARK

Last time they met - Bacchus Marsh 54 def. by Melton 93 (Maddingley Park, Round 12 2023)

Flag favorites Melton will look to consolidate their recent run of good form with a win over Bacchus Marsh at MacPhersons Park.

Call this bout an entree for the Bloods ahead of their top of the table clash on the road to Sunbury in Round 10 - a chance to regroup and fine tune after the week off.

Dennis Armfield's touring Cobras will have had a fortnight to identify and plan for their toughest assignment to date. So where do you start?

Sure, Braedan Kight's 41 goals (7 games) fits the 'concern' criteria.

The Bloods’ captain is averaging a goal every 3.5 disposals in 2024 which is truly remarkable for a 16 disposal player. The damage is not limited there either from the x-factor talent.

While Kight is shy of six feet in height, he leads the competition for marks inside 50 (5.1 avg per game), goal involvements (7.9) and ranks 6th for score involvements (9.9).

At the other end you have a dominant Bloods’ back six led by Jordy Cotter who ranks #1 at the club for kicks, efficiency by foot, marks, intercept marks and intercept possessions.

Only Sunbury's Tyson Lever has taken more intercept marks than Cotter. Keeping the ball away from him despite a clear message will be easier said than done.

The Cobras will need a 'spike' in most areas to compete against the relentless Bloods.

Jake Owen's importance is not capped by his contested marking ability alone (Comp rank #2). The star forward ranks #7 in the comp for both goal involvements (6.3 per game) and score involvements (9.6) - worthy of a bona fide match up from the Scoble camp.

Ruckman Luke Goetz leads the Cobras clearly for intercept marks ahead of defenders Jack Parente, Simon La Franchi and Collingwood VFL listed recruit Rye Penny.

Expect the Cobras, like all other BFNL sides to be stretched in the air and at ground level against the competition yardstick and be made to pay on the scoreboard for their inefficiencies.

For The Record
Melton rank #1 for tackles (69.7 avg per game) and Forward 50 tackles (16.3), Bacchus Marsh 9th (59.7) and 8th (10) respectively. The Cobras rank #2 (16.6 avg per game) for contested marks with a slender advantage over the Bloods 5th (13.4).

Scoop' Reviews Finals Week 1

Melton, Sebastopol and Darley all claimed wins in Week 1 of the 2022 Carlton Draught BNFL Finals Series.

  • Melton

    13.9.87

  • Def

  • Ballarat

    9.10.64

Minor Premiers and flag favourite Melton took the best part of three quarters to shrug off an honest Ballarat to win by 23 points.

After trailing at the half (by 1 point), the Bloods added six goals to two in the third term to set up a match-winning 31-point lead at the final change. Ironically the Bloods won just one and a half quarters for the game on their home deck but it was enough to get the job done.

Bloods midfielders Jack Walker (3 goals) and Jacob Hickey (1 goal) were named best for the winners while the outside run and carry of wingman Kyle Borg (2 goals) proved significant. Defenders Jordy Cotter, Brenton Payne and Riley Walker were recognised as key contributors as the underdog Swannies took it up to their more fancied opponents in the first half. Dangerous Bloods forwards Braedan Kight (2 goals), Liam Carter (2 goals) and Ryan Carter (1 goal) were three of nine Bloods players to hit the scoreboard.

There's no doubting plenty of positives for Joe Carmody's Swans to draw from the game despite the loss after testing the Bloods. Clearly, their third quarter alone cost them a genuine crack at the finish. Carmody recognised the efforts of his midfield Will Liston, Sam James and Marcus Powling by naming the in-form trio among the best players with Footscray VFL affiliate Bailey Van de Heuvel and defenders Austin McPherson and Nick Swain. Swans sharpshooter Andrew Hooper finished with three goals. Josh Gibson (hamstring tightness) did not play but is expected to return next week.

What the coaches said...

Aaron Tymms (Melton):We held strong in the first half when Ballarat had some territory dominance before we were able to get the game back on our terms in the second (half). (We were) really pleased with the contributions from across all lines.

Joe Carmody (Ballarat):We defended really well in the first half and probably didn't get the reward on the scoreboard. Melton outworked us in the third (quarter) and used the ball really well. That was the difference in the end.

  • Sebastopol

    12.7.79

  • Def

  • North Ballarat

    6.10.46

Sebastopol has secured a prized double chance, ending North Ballarat's season in the process with a hard-fought 33-point win on the weekend. It was the third straight win for the 'Burras over Brendan McCartney's Roosters in season 2022.

The 'Burras won every quarter and kicked six of the last seven goals to run out deserved winners and progress to a semi-final meeting with Melton. Much of the discussion during the week will be on the progress of 'Burras inspirational leader Tony Lockyer (ankle) who left the field in the second term and did not return.

Toby Hutt (4 goals) broke the game open in the third term with three goals as the 'Burras added six straight to North Ballarat's 3.4 to lead by 26 points at the final change. Unfortunately for North, 'the tape' will tell a story of wasted/missed opportunity and inferior ball use. Essentially, the right team won, the 'Burras used the ball much better, and made more of their opportunities. But you couldn't shame the Roosters for effort. Their intensity matched the 'Burras but again, their execution of the fundamentals proved their undoing.

'Burras defenders Riley O'Keefe, Ben Trew and Connor O'Shea were named best for the winners while the run and line-breaking carry of Matt Austin and Jed Hill was a highlight in a game played on the inside for the most part. Reigning Henderson Medalist Lachlan Cassidy was solid for four quarters but wasn't alone. Hugo Papst again proved his versatility at either end, answering the call to whatever the coach's needs. Papst is very important to the 'Burras fortunes moving forward, that I'm sure of.

For North Ballarat, forward trio Josh Chatfield, Jamie Quick (1 goal) and Jack Riding (2 goals) were given little time and space to get the game on their terms. In fairness, their influence wasn't helped by poor forward entries. Quick and Riding were more often forced to win their own ball at ground level making it easier for the 'Burras to defend.

Cam McCallum (1 goal) won the majority of hit-outs yet again and slotted a much-needed goal 20 minutes into the third term to get North Ballarat within three points. But that's as close as they would be for the remainder. Isaac Carey, Brock Leonard, and Riley Polkinghorne never gave up the effort while Harry Loader, Ryan Hobbs (before moving forward) and Ned Nash were solid distributors from defence.

A 'throw at the stumps' opportunity against Melton to make the Grand Final awaits Sebastopol this week. For the record, 12 of the 'Burras line-up that featured on Saturday were part of the 2019 Grand Final side.

North Ballarat exits after a tough year, a difficult draw and the untimely injury to key players. McCartney's boys lost five of their last six games after beating Melton in Round 13 - who would have thought? North Ballarat will find some comfort knowing McCartney has signed on to lead the group in 2023.

What the coaches said...

Michael Searl (Sebastopol):Super proud of the group. We needed to match them on the contested footy and felt we did that well. The belief in the group is important and we have a great opportunity in front of us.

Brendan McCartney (North Ballarat):We worked hard and gave ourselves numerous opportunities but weren't able to convert when we had chances. Sebastopol are well organised and well coached.

  • Darley

    7.6.48

  • Def

  • East Point

    5.17.47

Darley withstood an avalanche of inside 50's from East Point in the last quarter to progress through to a Semi-Final meeting with Ballarat. Sure, the Kangas would lament their inaccuracies (1.7 in the last qtr)

but credit to the Devils' back six and support crew for holding on under immense finals pressure. Players from both sides had barely enough energy to celebrate or commiserate at the final siren. Any last efforts in the immediate aftermath were spent purely on a handshake or embrace -recognition and respect for an old-fashioned battle that went down to the wire.

Kangas Captain Matty Johnston and Mickitja Rotumah-Onus led the charge in the second half, either waltzing out of stoppage or with their run and carry just as the Devils looked to be tiring. But the 'Brett Bewley-less' Devils' blend of youth and experience down back, combined with some Kangas wasted opportunities on goal, amounted to a wholesale, morale-boosting win for one, with heartbreak and disappointment for the other.

The highlights reel will be a tough assignment for the techs. So where do we start?

For the winners, Bailey Young was arguably best-on-ground for his four-quarter effort ahead of a host of defenders led by Matthew Brett and Mace Cousins. Bigman Trent Angwin was terrific in the air and was influential between the arcs providing a target for the Devils all day. The Devils' match-winning return of seven goals was shared among seven players.

For East Point, finishing near plus 20 for inside 50's in a game they won just one quarter, says a lot for their final quarter dominance. But alas, couldn't it get done and lost no admirers for their effort.

Kangas youngsters Jesse Cairns and Jack Jeffrey were lively and had their share of the ball while experienced campaigners Joel Van Meel, Clay Bilney and Mitch Walsh were never far from the action. On a tough day for forwards in unassuming breezy conditions, the Kangas managed just five goals, shared among five individual players. Evidently, it was the Kangas' lowest score of the season.

The numbers didn't lie heading in, giving every indication this final was going to be a close one. For the record, the Kangas averaged seven more points (FOR) per game while the Devils were conceding seven fewer points (AGST) per game to suggest a draw could be on the cards.

Missed it by that much...!

What the coaches said...

Dan Jordan (Darley):I thought we were more efficient in key moments during the first three quarters. But full credit to East Point, they kept coming at us in the last. In the end, we were just happy to hang on in a tight one that could've gone either way.

Jake Bridges (East Point):We can't all play a winning game, someone is sure to lose, yet we can play so that our name, no one may dare accuse. That when the Master referee scores against our name, it won't be whether we've won or lost, but how we have played the game.

The Swans secured second spot and a prized double chance with a narrow three-point win over the Burras at Marty Busch Reserve. It was the Swans' sixth win of the season by a goal or less and the tenth win by 18 points or less. How are the heart rates at Ballarat, we're yet to play a final!

What the Swans do have is character - truckloads of it. Despite their narrow successes, only Melton won more games than Joe Carmody's men in 2022. There's no doubting the Swans line-up is buoyed by the return of big man duo Marcus Powling and Bailey Van de Heuvel. Ruckman Powling missed a large chunk of the season with a torn hamstring but returned to his very best with arguably best-on-ground honours. Josh Gibson and Lachie Dawson booted three goals each for the winners while a wasteful Sebastopol were kept in it by Toby Hutt (three goals), James Keeble and Hugo Papst (two goals each).

The Burras trailed the Swans by 37 points at halftime and were just 1% ahead of Darley on the LIVE ladder, looking down the barrel at a fourth-place finish. But credit Michael Searl and his Burras contingent arresting the game back on their terms with five unanswered third-quarter goals.

Grady Snowden, Luke Kiel and Tony Lockyer featured prominently in the Burras revival and will be hopeful restricting dangerous North trio Jamie Quick, Jack Riding and Josh Chatfield.

Four points separated these two heavyweights at the final change as an arm wrestle of sorts (two goals each) prevailed for the duration as the Swans hung on to record another prizefighting win.

Ballarat head to Melton on Saturday for a Qualifying Final at Maccy Park while the Burras face 2021 Minor Premiers North Ballarat at Eastern Oval.

What the coaches said:

Michael Searl (Sebastopol):Another tough loss for us against the Swans. (We) didn't capitilise on our early dominance in the first quarter. They completely outworked us in the second quarter and really showed us the importance of work rate. (I'm) proud of the group to really dig deep and come at them in the second half. Lots of learnings to take from the match.

Joe Carmody (Ballarat):We set the game up in the second quarter with some good ball movement and excellent pressure. Sebastopol were very good in the contest in the third quarter. We showed a lot of character to hang on.

Sunbury finished their season on a high, surpassing 100% for and against on their way to a resounding 65-point win over Bacchus Marsh in front of a home crowd.

The Lions finished off their season with four wins from their last six games, an encouraging base for next year under Travis Hodgson who will lead the club into a fourth year in 2023. The Cobras, on the other hand, capitulated to a fifth loss in six games ending their season in eighth place with seven wins.

Veteran forward Leigh Brennan (five goals) shows no signs of ageing, leading a charge of eight Lions players to hit the scoreboard. The Lions led from start to finish and virtually put this game to bed by quarter time despite having had the advantage with the breeze.

Lions stand-outs Tyson Lever and Harry Minton-Connell continued their run of good form while the progression of youth trends in the right direction. Jack Hannett and Jack Newitt topped the list for as many as 12 candidates among best-on-ground conversations.

The Cobras, seemingly bereft of the fight we saw earlier in the year could manage just six goals on a quiet day for the visiting forwards. Six individual Cobras' goalkickers represented their major returns on the scoreboard while young combative ruckman Spencer Meagher was named best for the losing side. Defenders Daniel Veldon, Dominic Miesen and Xavier Jenks toiled manfully behind the ball while Tom German and Riley Stuhldreier were again serviceable contributors in the red, yellow and black.

Both are proud clubs and will prepare for their journey back to finals, for an eighth and ninth place finish, simply won't do.

What the coaches said:

Travis Hodgson (Sunbury):(It was) a good way to finish off the season - it's been a positive two-month block. The Marsh tried hard but our ability to stretch them with legs on the outside was obvious and played a significant role in the result.

Tom German (Bacchus Marsh):They used the ball well around the ground and we didn't execute well as a team.

2022 meetings head-to-head
Quarter Final: Melton 86 - Sebastopol 43
Round 11: Melton 84 - Sebastopol 43

Despite Bloods coach Aaron Tymms' 0-3 record at Mars Stadium, the Minor Premiers will start red hot favourites against the Burra.

Will Melton will do enough to secure their first title since 2005? Burras coach Michael Searl will have different ideas and ensure they're made to earn it, even if they come up short as they have in their previous two meets.

Tymms' winless record at the ground is something Burra fans can cling to, but they will have to overcome a similar record (against) of their own to get it done.

Under Searl, Sebastopol is 0-3 against Tymms' Melton. You would have to go back 1099 days come game day to witness the last Burra success over the Bloods - an 18-point,= 2019 Preliminary Final win.

Searl and his boys were able to overcome their 0-3 record over Ballarat last week to make it onto the McDonald's Ballarat FNL's biggest stage. And what an opportunity for both clubs the day presents.

Melton finally gets their chance to assert their dominance, their stranglehold on the 2022 competition in front of a huge crowd enhanced by the addition of live streaming via Facebook, the CLUCH TV app and LIVE radio. I expect this game to be the most watched of any BFNL game in recent history given the improvements to access.

It's the players' time to shine before one club's time to celebrate.

For the record, these two teams are the current Runners Up of 2018 and 2019. So, for the here and now, one club's luck is about to change.

The Bloods ability to score is frightening

If the nature of the Bloods' uncontested superiority is the fuel then surely their ability to score is the fire.

On ten occasions, the Bloods have scored 100+ points or more, not to mention a further six scores of 80+ points. On the flipside for the Burra, three scores of 100+ and just three other scores of 80+.

On the two occasions the Burra has met Melton they have managed just six goals, in fact, their two returns were identical. Why so? See 'the worry for Sebastopol' below. They are just six shy of the Bloods on average for inside 50s per game. The Bloods +7 advantage for marks inside 50 validates the separation of scoring to a degree, highlighting Searl and his support crew will need to have a day out on the magnets and get the message through.

Of the 12 goals kicked by the Burra against Melton this year, only Lachie Cassidy (once - 2 goals) has a multiple-goal return.

The Bloods on the other hand have had six multiple goalscorers from their two meets - Braedan Kight (twice - 2,3), Liam Carter (twice - 4,2), Ryan Carter (once - 3) and Luke Heaney (once - 3).

To put the weight of scoring into perspective, the Burras have just four or more players that played at the weekend kick 10 or more goals this season - James Keeble (32 / 17 games), Jed Hill (17/18), Toby Hutt (16/16), Liam Stow (15/18). Melton however have seven - Ryan Carter (60/17), Braedan Kight (42/18), Liam Carter 40/18), Lachlan Hickey (19/17), Luke Heaney (18/16), Kyle Borg (16/18) and Lachie Watkins (11/17). It's fair to imply that 'frightening' is the operative word.

Expect the Bloods defence to hold up

Only the height of the occasion stands in the way of this unheralded defensive group getting it right once again.

The Bloods have been the competition's benchmark in defence, matching the exploits of their more spoken about forwards group, but that would suit them just fine.

Tymms and his support staff would be thrilled with the returns from his defence given they've been 'the hunted' near all of 2022. Just one more effort stands in the way of the club's first Senior Men's Premiership since 2005.

Surely they've proven themselves more than capable of honouring the challenge.

Only one club averaged less than 60 points per game against this season and it's Melton (54). Convincing to say the least, as the silent assassins went about turning defence on the back of intercept into attack and, ultimately, scores.

Just how the 'Burra forwards get separation and find avenues to goal is another primary concern for Searl and his men. There is some merit in that everything that has happened previously accounts for nothing but something will need to change for the Burra to take home the Cup.

The worry for Sebastopol

Clearly Melton's advantage, regardless of opposition this year, has been their superior weight of possession, and more so uncontested possession.

Tymmsy's boys are +58 for disposals over the Burra on average per game, 50 of those uncontested. As a result, there is no surprise to see the Bloods are +27 for marks including a whopping +26 of those uncontested.

The Bloods often start their attack off half-back and boast a handy +14 advantage over the Burra for intercept possession that no doubt has the follow-on effect to the aforementioned. As a result, these chains of intercept, rebound and uncontested passage amount to a +4 advantage for marked shallow entries inside 50 and +3 for marks deep inside 50. Their sheer weight of possession alone, more often uncontested, has proven the catalyst behind their imposing 16-2 win/loss record and clearly the difference in their previous 41- and 43-point wins.

What is encouraging for the Burra, it's these stats in isolation loom their greatest threat, the rest are quite similar.

The 'potential' fix

Only two teams have been successful against the Bloods in 18 attempts this year. Melton spread most defences with good effect. The only chance the Burra have of causing an upset will be to keep their defence high as they did in the second half of their Elimination Final win over North Ballarat, denying the Bloods the corridor and width of the ground in offence. Easier said than done.

Burra have weapons of their own

You can't make it through such an even BFNL season without some weaponry of your own.

Sebastopol deserves its place in the big one. In fact, Tymms would be the least surprised of any, being the only coach to tip Sebastopol (outside of your own team) at the start of the season.

What will keep the Bloods in check is Tymms' respect for the 'Burra. The Bloods - let's be honest - haven't won anything yet. Tymms has been measured all through the season and has not once been caught 'out of his lane' assuming any premature entitlement.

So, when the Bloods back themselves in they will be fully aware that their opposition bat deep enough to test the season-long favourites.

James Keeble, Lachie Cassidy, Luke Kiel, Toby Hutt, Jed Hill, James Richards, Bailey Medwell, Riley O'Keefe are just eight players that spring to mind without raising the head off the keyboard. Each brings with them an impactful skillset that can aid across all three lines and deny the Bloods a game on their terms. Apologies to Matt Austin, Daniel Widgery, Chase Dummett and maybe even Tony Lockyer. There are another three or four and the potential Lockyer return (?) will gather its own head of steam in the build-up.

What the coaches say

Aaron Tymms (Melton):Really looking forward to the challenge that awaits us. It has been three years of hard work to reach this point and we are looking to get reward for the effort put in over that time. We are under no illusions that Sebastopol presents a tough challenge, are a well-organised team with high-quality players across the ground who enjoy the contest. We will need to be at our best and most combative to succeed and enjoy the ultimate success.

Michael Searl (Sebastopol):Excited for the challenge. We're under no illusions that Melton is deserving of the favourites tag this weekend but we are excited and can't wait to crack in. Anything can happen in a final, so we prepare well and enjoy the lead-up to the biggest game of the year.

The McDonald’s Ballarat Football Netball League wish to confirm some changes to junior grades in the lead up to the season.

The board received notification that Sebastopol will be fielding one side in the under 15’s, with this team being positioned in the Reserve Grade for the 2023 season. Mount Clear will also only field one side in the under 17 age group, with this team being positioned in the Senior Grade.

Sebastopol FNC have flagged a shortage in this grade since February with the club and league working to boost numbers to compete in two grades for 2023. Unfortunately, the club have not been able to secure the number of players required.

It was determined by the board that the current registered team will compete in the Reserve grade competition based off the list, past season results and player grades across multiple seasons.

Mount Clear FNC also flagged a shortage of players in their under 17 age group with the club exhausting all avenues to secure the additional 10 players to compete in both Seniors and Juniors.

Whilst the club has room for more than 10, this was the number set to be able to comfortably play and top up with additional 15 age group players.

The BFNL will work with the clubs to ensure sustained long-term viability in player numbers across all grades with a focus on filling grades in 2024.

Fixtures for the under 15 Seniors and 17 Reserves will be amended this week and promoted online as quickly as possible. Sebastopol and Mount Clear play each other in round 1 commencing Sunday 23rd of April, 2023 so internal changes will occur for this matchup with the full season promoted correctly from round 2.

Scoop' Reviews Round 10

Darley was the only team to win at home in Round Ten of the McDonald’s Ballarat Senior Men’s. After a scare, at the top of the table, Melton and East Point steadied to claim the points, while the Cobras joined three other teams on five wins after downing Sebastopol. North Ballarat resembled more of their best with a commanding win over Melton South.

The Devils recorded their first four-quarter win of the season with a comprehensive 106-point demolition job over the Lakers.

Spearhead forward Nick Rodda finished with nine goals to move on top of the League goalkicking table. Dan Jordan could have named as many as 15 young Devils players in the best before settling on Joel Cadman, Brett Bewley, Dylan Landt, Jack Bewley, Mitch Ward and, of course, Rodda. A 34-point quarter-time lead for the Devils became 64 at the half and 93 at the final change before 106 at the game’s end.

For the Lakers, there was some resistance from Geelong VFL-listed player Scott Carlin and experienced campaigner Nathan Pring, but the day in essence was all about the Black and White and a much-needed percentage boost that may well play a part come to the business end of the season.

Darley meets North Ballarat on Saturday as both sides aim for a second win against top-six opposition - the two teams are currently locked together on five wins, separated by a mere 0.1%. The Lakers will need to show more on the road when they meet Bacchus Marsh at Maddingley Park.

What the coaches said…

JORDAN (DARLEY):Our boys responded well around the contest. We had a good spread of contributors today.

FITZPATRICK (LAKERS):The way Darley used the ball was as good as any side we've played this year. Unfortunately, we couldn't put enough pressure on them, and they were able to cut through us like a hot knife through butter.

North Ballarat kicked 16 goals to three after quarter-time, earning the plaudits of both coaches on their way to an 83-point win on the road. The Panthers led at the first break but were no match for the intensity and pressure of the 2021 Minor Premiers.

Dangerous North Ballarat mobile forward Jack Riding was on fire booting six goals to claim best on-ground honours ahead of Collingwood VFL listed utility Sam Glover. The experienced 'big and small' duo of Cam McCallum and Tim Spiers made significant contributions for the winners alongside the Loader boys, Harry and Fletcher. While it's back to the drawing board for Heath Pritchard’s Panthers, Brendan McCartney's boys looked primed for a Match of the Round meeting with Darley at Mars Stadium.

Pritchard must be scratching his head, frustrated with his club's 0-6 home record heading into their bye in Round 11. One positive to be drawn for the losing side is the run of good form from trio John Kovarik, and youngsters Jarrod Bibby and Riley Theo. Panthers captain Shaun Wyatt and progressive type Mitch Fino were sound on an otherwise disappointing day for the navy blue and white.

What the coaches said…

PRITCHARD (MELTON SOUTH):They beat us at the contest. We pride ourselves on our pressure and work rate and today North Ballarat looked back to their best.

McCARTNEY (NORTH BALLARAT):Team effort against really good opposition. Our pressure game was back and they played for each other. A good day’s work.

The travelling Cobras kept finals aspirants Sebastopol to just six goals on their way to a morale-boosting 22-point win. The Cobras led at every change, joining three other teams on five wins to keep their Top Six chances alive. Once again Cobras captain Jake Owen played the role of General down back in the absence of key defenders Jack Williams and Jason Robinson. In-form Cobras duo Ryley Stuhldrier and newcomer Sam Crea made it back-to-back solid performances to feature among the better players while small forward Tyler Huynh (three goals) pinched his second haul of multiple goals this year.

At the final change and against the breeze, questions would be asked of the Cobras' defence and their ability to hold out a 12-point advantage. The Cobras passed the test with flying colours, aided by the first use of the ball thanks to Daniel Burton in the ruck. Tyson Shea was prominent in game 251 - conditions suiting the in and under veteran down to the ground.

For the losing side, Jack Bambury, Tony Lockyer and Hugo Papst gave their all but a disappointing six-goal return was never going to be enough.

The 'Burra face an ejection from the Top Six when they meet undefeated Melton on Saturday. Seventh-placed Bacchus Marsh can move as high as fifth if they can get a win over Lake Wendouree on home soil. The Lakers have lost their last eight games on the trot.

What the coaches said…

SEARL (SEBASTOPOL): They were cleaner and brought a high level of intensity in the first quarter. We arm-wrestled the game back in our favour through the middle stages but were outworked again in the last. We have to regroup and go again.

GERMAN (BACCHUS MARSH):We moved the ball really well at times and structured up well, which forced errors on their behalf. Our defence held up well in the last quarter against the wind.

In the end, it was the six goals to one scored in the third term by the undefeated Bloods that was enough to warrant a ten-point margin at the final siren.

The plucky Lions were more than competitive for the most part, and coach Jarrett Giampaolo cited the third-quarter collapse as potentially the difference between a win or a loss. Whilst buoyed by the effort, a disappointed Giampaolo said the players are done with ‘honourable losses’.

Redan led the flag favourites by six points at the main break but couldn't maintain their 'better for longer' intensity of play. Bloods coach Aaron Tymms dismissed any suggestion his boys were laboured by the 21-day break. For the winners, Jacob Hickey (three goals), Blake Souter, Harrison Hanley (three goals) and Lachlan Walker were named best, while the Carter brothers Ryan and Liam were held to two goals apiece.

Seasoned Lions Lachie George, Daniel Bond and Liam Hoy featured among the better players in a losing side while goal shark Isaac Grant and experienced forward Grant Bell finished with two goals. The Lions face another footy audit on Saturday when they meet East Point at Eastern Oval.

What the coaches said…

GIAMAPAOLO (REDAN):A valiant effort, but at some point, we need to turn those into wins. I was really proud of the effort and endeavour for the most part, but we just lost composure for five-minute patches, especially in the third quarter against the breeze. You can't let a good side like Melton dictate the game like that. Our young group will take plenty out of it but they're hungry for a win, not just close losses.

TYMMS (MELTON):We certainly didn't play our best football but full credit to Redan, they were very good. They brought the heat and used the ball really well. I liked their game.

Second-placed East Point managed to overcome a spirited Sunbury with a come-from-behind 13-point win at the weekend.

The Lions led at every change but couldn't hold on when it mattered most - the final siren. Coach Travis Hodgson had his boys ready to play early as they opened up a 29-point quarter-time lead. Essendon VFL listed Lions forward Jake Sutton starred with eight goals and very nearly landed the upset of the round.

At the other end, Kangas leading goalkicker Jordy Johnston had his first human day on the footy field for some weeks, held to one goal and four behinds by Willy Wright with aerial support from Tyson Lever. Despite the loss, it was just the second time the Lions have finished with more than 68 points for the year.

So, who led the charge for the reigning dual Premiers as they march back from obscurity? Try the highly talented midfield trio of Mickitja Rotumah-Onus, Matty Johnston and Jackson Merrett, alongside returning duo Dallas Martin and Aiden Nestor. Bryson McDougall (three goals) and Jack Jeffrey (two goals) hit the scoreboard. Sunbury will be hoping for a similar start against Ballarat on Saturday who return off the bye.

What the coaches said…

HODGSON (SUNBURY):A pretty good performance. Unfortunately, our inability to capitalise on a good half-time lead means we go home without the 4 points again. Was pleasing that we were able to respond from our worst performance [in Round Nine] with our best [in Round Ten].

BRIDGES (EAST POINT):We stayed in the game for long enough, went to work and executed when we needed to... a great response after half-time.
