With a third of the home and away season completed, the focus switches to the halfway mark of the year. Round 7 holds plenty of crucial games that continue to shape the power rankings of our senior men's footy.

Sebastopol face one of the competition’s toughest challenges this weekend as they head to Clarke Oval—a venue where they’ve never left victorious in 21 attempts.

History certainly favours the home side, with Sunbury holding a dominant record, winning 36 of the 39 encounters between the two clubs.

Sunbury have been nothing short of clinical since their Round 1 loss to Darley, cementing themselves as one of the early premiership threats.

A trademark of their season so far has been their blistering starts—they lead the league for first-quarter dominance and rarely look back once in control.

Their ability to win the football early, maintain possession through clean hands, and transition forward with precision has made them the competition’s top scoring team.

Sebastopol, with just the one win on the board, have shown patches of what they’re capable of—particularly in strong final quarters.

However, their struggles through the second and third terms have consistently left them with too much ground to recover.

To stand any chance of cracking the Clarke Oval curse, the Burra will need to starve the Lions of opportunity.

Both clubs sit in the top three for goal accuracy, making every inside 50 entry all the more dangerous.

For Sebastopol, restricting Sunbury’s forward entries will be key to limiting the scoreboard pressure.

A major focus will be curbing the influence of Jake Sutton, who has been in epic form with 11 goals in the past two games. Expect Tony Lockyer to identify a defensive match-up capable of reducing his impact.

Winning the hard ball and controlling possession will be the Burra’s pathway into the contest—but against one of the league’s most balanced and disciplined outfits, that path won’t come easy.

Despite their first loss in nearly a year, Melton return to Round 7 with history still largely in their corner.

Their nine-game winning streak against Bacchus Marsh includes an imposing average margin of 55 points.

But this week’s matchup arrives with more edge than the numbers suggest.

The Cobras will still be stinging after a narrow six-point loss to Ballarat.

A victory here wouldn’t just be a major scalp—it could also give them breathing space from North Ballarat, should the Roosters get up over Lake Wendouree.

For Melton, Round 6’s grand final rematch against East Point exposed a rare vulnerability—particularly around the contest.

While the Bloods remain one of the competition’s best ball users and aerial threats, they’ve been beaten in clearances at times, and that’s where the focus must sharpen.

Feeding the forward line—especially Braedan Kight—will be key.

Held to a season-low one goal in the wet last weekend, Kight had been averaging four per game before then.

Expect a strong response from the star forward, particularly on home turf.

For Bacchus Marsh to push for the upset, their third-quarter form needs a turnaround.

They’re yet to win a third term in 2025—a critical period where games are often won or lost.

Ruckman Luke Goetz continues to give them first use at stoppages, but the Cobras must make the most of those centre clearances by delivering clean ball inside 50.

With Sunbury looming next week, Melton can’t afford to let this one slip. For the Cobras, a win could reshape the narrative of their season.

Despite limited recent meetings—just one in each of the past four seasons—history favours the Roosters.

North have claimed the last three contests by margins exceeding ten goals, and with confidence now growing, they’ll be hungry to keep that streak alive.

While both sides boast similar scoring efficiency this year, North’s advantage lies in their higher volume of inside 50s and slightly stronger goal conversion—key indicators that have helped them stay more competitive on the scoreboard.

The return of Cam McCallum in the ruck adds vital experience for the Roosters.

His presence will likely strengthen North Ballarat’s already solid clearance work and sets up an intriguing ruck duel with Lakers big man Tom Zampatti.

For Lake Wendouree to stay in the contest, tackling pressure will be paramount.

While co-captain Joel O’Connell and Kynan Raven have led the way defensively—averaging over 4 tackles per game each—it’ll take a whole-team lift in intensity to match the Roosters’ ball movement and deny them repeat inside 50s.

With an imposing Round 8 clash against Darley on the horizon, this shapes as a must-win game for North Ballarat’s finals aspirations.

For the Lakers, it’s another opportunity to take a step forward and produce a four-quarter performance that can challenge a resurgent Roosters side.

While the 2025 ladder tells one story, the head-to-head record between Darley and Redan adds an interesting view to this Round 7 clash.

The Devils might be one of the competition’s biggest contenders this season, but Redan have historically had their measure—winning more of their recent encounters before Darley’s big win in their last meeting over a year ago.

That said, history may count for little this weekend.

Darley have been electric to start the season. Dan Jordan’s men have set the standard across the board—leading the competition in disposals, clearances and contested possessions.

Combine that with an elite transition game and an ability to suppress teams with defensive pressure, and it's clear why they’re firmly in the premiership conversation.

Redan, meanwhile, have had a mixed bag of results but have shown glimpses of a team on the rise.

Gary Learmonth’s young side will need to dramatically increase their possession rate if they’re to challenge the Devils on their home turf.

Around the ball, they’ve shown patches of efficiency, particularly in clearing from stoppages, but the challenge this week is maintaining that intensity for four quarters against the Devils’ standard.

Taj Bond and Jake Connolly will need to convert whatever forward chances come their way, as opportunities may be limited.

To stay in the contest, the Lions will need a sharp lift in tackling pressure and a defensive mindset that can limit Darley’s precise forward entries.

It’s a big task for Redan—but one that could define how they shape up.

For Darley, it’s another opportunity to show just how big the gap is between them and the chasing pack.

Take away the early 2024 season clash of these two sides and you’re left with some electric, defining matches.

The sides met twice in three weeks at the latter end of the 2024 season.

The first meeting saw Ballarat shock the competition with a Round 18 win over the Roos, re-shaping the finals race.

Two weeks later, in gruelling conditions, East Point returned the favour and ended Ballarat’s fairy tale run.

Both teams enter the clash with momentum after grinding out single digit wins last weekend.

East Point had the edge in clearances – largely thanks to the efforts of Matt Johnston.

Expect Swans coach Ash Baker to have someone lined up to go with him closely.

For Ballarat, Harry Butler will be one to watch. A big-time performer, Butler has delivered against East Point before and remains a huge asset with his versatility around the ground.

Jacob Brown is expected to return for the Roos after a week off, which adds another dimension to Joe Carmody’s selection options.

With finals spots tightening, this is a big one.

A win for East Point gives them some breathing space inside the top four. A Ballarat win? It makes the top six race even tighter.

A top of the table clash is just one of many tasty fixtures coming up in Round 8, with hotly contested top six spots on the line and elusive rare wins up for grabs.

Unbeaten league heavyweights Melton and Darley face off in a highly anticipated top of the table clash at MacPherson Park.

For all of the Devils’ progression under second year coach Dan Jordan, a timely footy audit awaits against the reigning premiers. Plenty will need to go right for the hunters, Darley, to walk away with the points come 5pm.

In the event of a seventh straight win on the road ahead of the King's Birthday bye, the Devils will have ended a 2226-day winning drought against the Bloods dating back to April 29 Round 2, 2017 and more broadly, a 16-0 winning run at home for Aaron Tymms' men.

While the Bloods current 7-0 season run has a familiar sense of déjà vu, the jury might still be out to see if they're as strong as last year despite similar returns forward from the Carter brothers and the efforts of Brett McIntyre filling the ruck void in the absence of Ben Archard (now returned) and the departed Mark Orr.

The Bloods have proven to be the competition's blueprint for the soldier in, soldier out theory. Today will be no exception with crucial midfielder Jack Walker set to miss with concussion.

Despite the Bloods’ six-year reign, the Devils have rarely been put to the sword, even in more testing times. Needless to say, the Devils’ failings to post a winning score against the Bloods must be corrected if they're to cause an upset win on Saturday.

Finding avenues to goal will go a long way determining the Devils’ fate, with fine weather expected. Sure, the Devils rank one in offence after seven rounds but four of the clubs six wins have come against the bottom four teams who have just three wins between them.

The Bloods will be buoyed with Archard and Kyle Borg back in the mix, but it’s no guarantee that Tymms' all conquering Bloods will have the game weighted on their terms.

The Devils will need midfield duo Brett Bewley and Luther Baker to provide enough drive to challenge the Bloods enviable depth of riches. There is no denying questions will be asked of the Devils’ defence to contain the Bloods’ barometer trio in the Carter brothers and Braedyn Kight but don’t be surprised if there is a cat thrown amongst the pigeons and the flag favorites are knocked off in a close one.

Sunbury will look to correct on its previous two slow starts, with a 'statement-like' impression in the first quarter when they host Redan.

While there are doubts on the Sunbury Lions matching it with the top few sides without Tyson Lever (foot), Harrison Minton-Connell (Essendon VFL) and Mitch Lewis (Overseas), Redan are well within their sights.

The visitors too will be without some of their top liners as Lachie George and Liam Hoy endure more time on the sidelines with injury. Redan will be sweating on the availability of Footscray VFL affiliated Cooper Craig-Peters with his selection unknown until Friday. Getting it done on the road without their key mid, George and Hoy will be tough assignment despite a seven-point success at Clarke Oval last year.

Evidently, Craig-Peters missed that game but George and Hoy both featured. To give the visitors some comfort, Sunbury did have Lever, Minton-Connell and Lewis but still fell short.

Just what version we're going to get from these two teams will tell its own story in the aftermath. Both seemingly have patches of minimal impact at stages in games and are prone to conceding back-to-back goals, which would be well known to both camps.

Sunbury simply must get it done at home and rebuild their ruthless Clarke Oval reputation, with the venue once considered a fortress. For the present however, only Lake Wendouree, Bacchus Marsh and North Ballarat have failed to win there over the past two seasons with Sebastopol not making the trip down either. 

There's a bit at stake here, as both sides fight for a similar spot in the top six.

You may well expect a similar result to the last time the Roosters met the Panthers at Mars Stadium.

Brendan McCarney's North Ballarat have an opportunity to capitilise on their good doings over the last fortnight that has resulted in the Roosters winning seven of its past eight quarters, including three over flag fancies Sebastopol last week.

If Roosters’ big man Stewart Crameri does indeed play, there's every reason the bona fide key forward will spend a majority of minutes deep inside 50, giving his ailing groin issue some respite.

Cam McCullum and Riley Polkinghorne will enjoy a day out with the latter the likely beneficiary of McCullum's first tap dominance.

Skillful Roosters’ half forward Jamie Quick is every chance to have a big afternoon in front of goal having kicked 17 goals this year to lead the tally for North. While tips on the margin are purely speculative, a mini win for Melton South would be keeping it under 100 points, a feat they haven’t achieved thus far this season. 

Scoop’s tip: North Ballarat

The visiting Kangas will endeavour to back up their near upset performance over competition benchmarks Melton last round when they take on Sebastopol at Marty Busch Reserve, but that will be easier said than done for a young group, especially after such a solid, physical hit-out.

Sebastopol are coming off their own disappointment, finishing 30 points short of North Ballarat and will be eager to atone.

Surely the battle for spots in the Burra line-up is as competitive as ever given their depth, as coaching duo Luke Kiel and Michael Columbro look for a combative response validating their first choice. On paper, the Burra read seriously good, loaded with an enviable blend of talented youth and experience, cherry ripe in the premiership window.

However, sides laden with depth can struggle with ownership, leaving it up to others to carry the slack. If that scenario infiltrates a group, they can be suspect to flat performances. The Burra will not want to be flat against a promising East Point that's for sure so expect Kiel and Columbro to get the response they're after and with it, a much needed scalp in the finals mix.

For Merrett's well led young Kangas, they're progressing in the right direction and will continue to ask questions of any opposition. This time, Sebastopol.

Scoop’s tip: Sebastopol

The travelling Cobras front their best winning opportunity of the season to date when they meet the one-win Lakers.

Coincidentally, the Cobras’ six games in 2023 have been against the top six teams on the ladder as they stand. The Lakers draw hasn't been full of luxuries either, with four of their six games coming against the top six.

But recent history will account for very little today as both sides eye a prized win and a chance to sing as one in victory come 5pm.

Finding a winner is tough. The Lakers, similar to the Cobras, have very inexperienced 'bottom halves' of their groups and what returns will come of those are likely to have a significant bearing on the result.

For if it were solely based on top-end talent, I would lean to the Cobras with Jake Owen, Jake McCreery, Luke Goetz, Eamonn Ogden and in-form consistent duo Tyson Shea and Jack Parente. I'm not sure the Lakers 'bat' as deep with their top end, but to use a cricketing vernacular their tail may wag a little more favourably the further down the list you go.

Both sides will look the winners at some stage in this contest and be hopeful recent lapses in games are kept to a minimum for the result here could well be decided by which team manufactures the greater number of chances in a game of momentum.

While the winners are set to rejoice and embrace this rare opportunity for victory, contemplation and despair awaits the losers.

Ahead of the King's Birthday Bye next weekend, teams across the league will be looking to head into the break on a high with strong performances this Saturday.

League improvers Sunbury will aim to make it seven wins on the trot in a dream start for the club under new coach Matty White.

While the Lions are flying and have done everything right, let's not get too ahead of ourselves.

They came from the clouds to beat Darley who were all over them for three quarters and dismantled North Ballarat who had legitimate health issues - both games were at home.

The Lions match ups with East Point and Melton over the next three weeks will tell us more of where Sunbury is at in the pecking order.

What is real for the Lions is they're healthy and have added quality ball users and leg speed to a list many had in the finals conversation last year before they fell off the perch.

Having former Essendon VFL listed dangerous forward Jake Sutton (28 goals - comp #2) full time and breakout accomplice Mitch McLean (21 – comp #4) hitting the scoreboard has been an overwhelming feature for the super-efficient Lions who rank first for conversion on goal, which is a mighty effort given their number of shots on goal. 

The additions of Dean Muir, Ben Cameron, Jordan Tentonello, Ben Eales and Brock Landt should not be underestimated either.

Super depth, with few injuries will make it hard for Joe Carmody's Kangas endeavouring to extend their winning run to six. And why shouldn't they give themselves every chance to deny the all-conquering (thus far) Lions.

Ironically the Kangas’ off day against the Lions in Round 11 last year was arguably the line in the sand game for them having since won 11/15 games since including a preliminary final appearance.

The Kangas remain a serious proposition in their own right given the returns of Jacob Brown, Mikitja Rottumah-Onus and the rise of Alex Molan and Strahan Robinson.

The Johnston's have always been, well, the Johnstons, with Jordy adding fuel to the friendly 'better mid or forward' debate with six reminder goals last week. Jackson Merrett and Bryson McDougall have been healthy too, complementing the Kangas’ run of solid form.

Nonetheless, the hosts must take care with their distribution, especially post clearance given a host of intercept Lions’ defenders will be waiting with open arms to swing the 'Whitey plan' led by Tyson Lever, into action.

The Cobras’ hierarchy understand that wins over the bottom three teams will not be enough to validate progress under new coach Dennis Armfield.

What they're chasing is a scalp, and North Ballarat present as the ideal footy audit when the two sides meet at Maddingley Park with the Cobras fresh off the bye and raring to go.

Forget last year’s 68-point loss as any form guide given the Cobras were in the preparatory phase of a rebuild following a mass exit of players post the 2022 season.

Twelve months on, the next measurement of growth and progress comes to a head in front of a Cobras home crowd who would (fairly) be unsure where they stand in the pecking order - curious what their best is capable of.

Well Brendan McCartney's disciplined Roosters loom the perfect candidates to provide some of the answers - a proud blend of youth and experience that will keep you honest with and without the ball to the last seconds of every quarter.

McCartney respects the competition, is never too far ahead and will reiterate his message of playing the minutes against the Cobras.

The fight for a top three finish just got harder with the improvements of Sunbury and East Point- no results will be taken for granted.

The Roosters were outscored in the second half last week against a young Redan boasting 10+ Under 19 eligible players.

The Cobras won't have that many but aren't shy on their share of Under 20 representatives.

The Roosters will understand keeping a young group in check is to deny momentum.

McCartney's group are good at that, they suck all the air out of a game and have you fight for the simplest pleasures in footy.

Even though the Roosters are likely to be without Collingwood VFL listed Sam Glover who booted four goals at their last meet, expect Jamie Quick (11 goals, 4 games, comp #15), Ned Nash (13 goals, 6 games, comp #11) and Hugh Trigg (10 goals, 6 games, comp #17) to prove more than a handful in the front half and the primary beneficiaries of an inform midfield.

North Ballarat

After a tough month, the Swans get a golden opportunity to end a three-game losing streak when they host the winless Panthers.

Expect dangerous Swans forward Andrew Hooper to have every chance of matching his six goal return from their last meet.

More broadly, the likelihood of the Swans matching the heights of a 158-point scoreline will be an interesting watch as the Panthers endeavour to 'dig in' for longer.

The addition of former Collingwood and Hawthorn left footer Tom Phillips is a welcoming bonus for Travis Hodgson’s group still yet to win a game since Round 9, 2022.

Young Panther Jarrod Bibby has been a solid contributor despite the clubs run of outs alongside former Sunbury junior Ryder Rousch and key big man Broden Collins.

Former Collingwood VFL listed giant Darrean Wyatt and Geelong VFL listed Darby Schilder have added some necessary aerial presence for the battle.

But the challenge for the Panthers this week won't come in the air.

A swarm of improving young Swans namely Wil Liston, Paddy Simpson, Wyatt Squires and the Rinaldi boys are progressing nicely, an adequate support base to more experienced trio Call Wellings (despite his age), Lauchlan Dalgleish, Marcus Powling and the X-factor Hooper.

Both coaches will cast a keen eye on their abilities to retain the footy.

Costly turnovers have been a frustrating constant for the most part. Some clean entries will at least give the respective loyal and faithful in attendance something to smile about.

Ballarat

Two sides, two agendas.

The travelling Devils look to end a two-game losing streak when they face the Burra whose two season wins have come against the bottom two teams.

But the nature of the Burras’ previous form will account for very little as Devils’ coach Dan Jordan eyes a correction from his own group who failed to deliver on expectation in their previous two starts.

Sure, it's no surprise for any side at the moment falling short of Sunbury (8 points) and Melton (67 points) but it was the way they went about it.

Since three-quarter time of the Sunbury game in Round 6 the Devils have been outscored 140 (21.14) to 45 (6.9), while being smashed in all key areas of pressure confirming a clear drop of intent from the reigning premier.

The last five quarters of the Devils’ season has seen them cough up 21 goals from just 64 entries while forward half has also had its challenges with just six goals from 44 inside 50s for the period.

Expect a response this weekend from a proud led group both on and off field.     

For the Burra, a win last week over the struggling Panthers could be just what Tony Lockyer’s men needed.

The feeling of a win on the back of impactful returns from Riley O'Keefe and Luke Kiel will have the Burra up and about, well, for as long as the Devils allow it.

Both sides have had pressure issues in recent weeks, so the race is on to find who can resemble closest to their best for longer.

While Lockyer has surely tempered expectations on the season whole for his group, there'll be no denying the Burras an appetite from week-to-week adding to their two win tally.

Gee, if Lakers' coach Rohan Brown conceded a gulf in class between his young group and Sunbury last week, I’m at wits end to predict the superlatives the former Beaufort coach will come up with for Melton.

The Bloods, alongside Sunbury and East Point are the form sides in the comp taking everything before them and putting away any side that lapses on the job. And a memo for Brown and his group - the Bloods don't discriminate having made the reigning premiers look second rate in front of their home crowd last week.

Just where do you start containing the Bloods? Troy Scoble's improving group managed 16 goals from their 42 forward 50 entries against the Devils, hitting the scoreboard in one way shape or form with more than half their opportunities. Super effort.

Their midfield is sound, led by Jono O'Brien in the ruck, and a handful of rotations all capable of impacting with and without the ball.

In defence the Bloods take more intercept marks than any side in the comp and will feast on any Lakers errant or pressured entries.

Forward 50 entries for the visiting Lakers will be in the minority range adding to a heightened level of care factor importance on the ball carrier to deliver.

Getting through the Bloods is not easy, especially at MacPhersons Park.

If the Lakers can usurp their last score of 44 against the Bloods, they will have shown plenty of character to warrant more of the consistent narrative around resilience coming out of CE Brown Reserve.

Unfortunately for the Lakers, the reality is there's a headache whichever way you look in the form of a Bloods jumper.

A tough day at the office is expected for the touring party.

Wins against teams like Sebastopol are the building blocks of a sustainable finals push.

The ruck duel looms as a telling battle.

Luke Goetz leads the league with the Cobras on an average of 81 hit-outs per game, to the Burra’s 36.

Sebastopol must scramble second-phase contests and make every clearance count to disrupt Goetz’s supply.

The last meeting between these two at Macpherson Park saw Melton dismantle the Lions by 77 points.

But with Sunbury riding a six-game winning streak and in elite form, a repeat performance from the reigning premiers won’t come easy.

A key matchup to watch will be the forward shootout between Jake Sutton and Braeden Kight.

Sutton, the league’s equal leading goalkicker in 2025, is averaging nearly four majors a game and looms large as a match-winner.

Kight, on the other hand, was dominant last time these sides met—booting five goals alongside Jordan Kight’s four in a complete forward clinic.

Troy Scoble’s men continue to find plenty of entries inside 50, but their accuracy has left room for improvement.

Against a ruthless Sunbury side who have converted their chances better than anyone in the competition, inefficiency could prove costly.

Sunbury leads the league for both points scored and least points conceded in final quarters, while Melton has only managed to win two last terms all season.

The battle of the black and white is a fierce rivalry, the two meeting no fewer than seven times in just the past two years.

And with six of their last 12 encounters decided by 21 points or less, punters can expect another tight battle this weekend.

The Roosters will take confidence from their recent home form against the Devils, winning the past three at Mars Stadium.

With finals now in a much more realistic view and just two points separating them from the top six, this clash looms large for North.

The return of Cam McCallum in the ruck adds crucial experience, especially against Darley’s rising star Lucas Impey, who is averaging 55 hit outs per game.

This weekend marks the 200th time Ballarat and Redan will square off—a rivalry that dates all the way back to 1942.

Redan held the upper hand in recent history, winning 10 of 11 matchups between 2015 and 2021, but momentum has shifted since.

Ballarat have claimed five of the past six clashes, including their most recent meeting.

This one, though, feels like it could go either way—with both sides firmly in the hunt for a finals berth.

Despite sitting second last on the ladder, Redan are just a couple of wins outside the top six.

A victory here, followed by a winnable clash with Lake Wendouree next week, could see the Lions suddenly right back in contention.

Meanwhile, Ballarat are only four points clear of North Ballarat but sit behind them in percentage, making a win this weekend just as crucial to keep their finals hopes alive.

The Swans will be boosted by the return of midfielder Paddy Simpson, whose average of 20 disposals and six score involvements per game will be a huge benefit.

For Redan, the inclusion of Lachlan George in recent weeks has brought a much-needed dose of experience, helping steady a team hit hard by injury earlier in the season.

The match-up could hinge on two key areas: how the game starts, and how it ends.

Ballarat have won the opening term just once in 2025.

If Redan can replicate their fast starts from early in the year, they could put the Swans on the back foot quickly.

With the top four sides locked on 24 points, percentage is a hot topic of the finals conversation.

Currently sitting fourth with the lowest percentage of the bunch, the Roos will be eyeing both four points and a significant boost when they host winless Lake Wendouree this weekend.

Last time these two met at Eastern Oval, East Point put on a clinic.

Replicating that performance could be essential, especially with a heavyweight clash against ladder-leaders Darley after the break.

Anything less than a big win here could see them lose grip on a top-three spot by the halfway point of the season.

For the Lakers, while the wins column remains empty, it’s all about development and setting measurable goals.

These matchups against elite opposition offer valuable benchmarks—and a chance for some of their consistent contributors to test themselves at the highest level.

Joel O’Connell will likely draw the challenge of limiting Micka Rotumah-Onus, who has been near unstoppable through the midfield.

Angus Gove, a standout in defence, faces a different but equally tough assignment: keeping Jordan Johnston and other key Roos forwards from dominating the scoreboard.

In the ruck, Tom Zampatti has proven he can win the hit outs.

The next step for the Lakers is turning those into meaningful clearances and momentum—something East Point’s Joel Van Meel and Ryder Lavery have made a habit of doing with composure and consistency.

After the bye weekend the action is back this Saturday with a number of tantalising contests set to be on display across the competition.

Scoop looks ahead to the Round 9 schedule.

Expect the Cobras to make it back-to-back wins when they host the struggling Panthers.

The club is hopeful Cobra fans will turn out in large numbers to witness their second win of the season coinciding with their annual "Fight the Beast" MND Fundraiser where a selected group of Cobra faithful take the plunge down the slide into the icy waters below for the worthy cause.

Despite the Cobras one win season to date, new coach Jason Williams has been relatively pleased with the effort of his under manned group for the most part, giving every indication a big win against the Panthers is on the cards.

If the Cobras midfield can get on top of the visitors early, former Captain Jake Owen can look forward to a big day in front of the sticks.

Any returns for the home side from the AFL's Under 18 pathway competition will only make the Panthers task more difficult as they strive for a first loss of the season under 100 points.

Scoop’s tip: Bacchus Marsh

Seventh placed East Point must win and win well when they host the Lakers.

While Jackson Merrett's boys are knocking on the door of the top six, they sit two games and another 34% behind the fifth placed side in Sunbury. East Point will be hopeful a win will be enough to replace sixth placed Redan who face a testing meet with Sebastopol.

Given the departure of Lakers’ coach Jack Fitzpatrick last week, history says a spike in effort more often follows from the playing group, eager to impress off a fresh start.

Merrett will be hoping to put this game to bed early and deny the one-win Lakers any momentum. For the longer the Lakers remain in the game, the less percentage gain the dangerous Kangas will accumulate.

While the likely match result will not surprise, it will be the nature of the projected Kangas win that will attract the greatest attention.

Scoop’s tip: East Point

Despite the Devils’ impressive 7-0 run on the road, this match-up looms just as much a danger game for the ladder leaders as it does the hosts.

The Roosters win/loss record under Brendan McCartney at Mars Stadium sits at 14-3, giving every indication a 15th win would not surprise, with their chances set to be buoyed by the likely return of marquee signing Stewart Crameri from injury.

And, when you consider the potential influence of Werribee VFL listed Jack Riding and current BFNL leading goalkicker Jamie Quick (25 goals) forward of centre, the Roosters pose a real handful.

Furthermore, Dan Jordan's boys will have to be at their best around the coal face denying in-form midfield duo Cam McCullum and Riley Polkinghorne first use out of stoppage. The visitors will be without heart and soul inside mid, Luther Baker (hamstring), and will count on an impact contribution from their promoted soldier.

The contest between two of the more astute operators off field with the magnets could also play a role in the outcome. McCartney and Jordan similarly prefer process over match ups - just who gets it done, a game on their terms for longer will surely earn the four points.

The Devils, led by Brett Bewley, Billy Myers, Matthew Brett and Shane Page, have done everything right thus far but something tells me, this game in particular, they're cherry ripe for the taking.

Scoop’s tip: North Ballarat

League improvers Sunbury will be looking to consolidate their place in the top six with a win on the road over Ballarat.

Sure, they'll have to do it without their Captain Tyson Lever and midfielder Mitch Lewis but you're likely to find nearly all sides are shy of their best 22 with the season eight rounds in.

While experienced Swans forward Andrew Hooper (22 goals) poses the Lions greatest threat causing an upset on the goal front, the visitors seemingly hold the aces covering the former Western Bulldog.

Lions’ trio Jake Sutton (17 goals), Cody Brand (14 goals) and ageless go-to-man Leigh Brennan (10 goals) provide enough spread in the front half getting it done on the scoreboard even if Hooper has his way.

Lions’ newcomers Josiah Garisto, RIvva Karpany and Brand are beginning to gel with their team mates and will continue to build on that synergy into the second half of the season. 

An all important sixth win beckons for the Lions who will look to start well having trailed at the half in their previous three games (Redan, Bacchus Marsh, Darley).

Sunbury aside, Saturday provides a young Ballarat outfit with another opportunity to ply their trade under coach Chris Maple with an eye on staying in games for longer.

Sunbury will be stiff opposition and are set to start warm favorites to make it a hattrick of wins ahead of another road trip and tougher assignment against Sebastopol in Round 10.

Scoop’s tip: Sunbury

Redan host Sebastopol in an all-important game as both sides aim to keep the wolves from the door. The Lions cling to sixth place on the BFNL table ahead of East Point, who are knocking, while the Burra aim to stay in touch with the top two.

If Sebastopol are fair dinkum and play to their strengths, they should be too good for Redan despite some genuine resistance in Jarrett Giampaolo's milestone 250th game (Congratulations!).

Again, the Lions will have to sweat on the VFL selections of Cooper Craig Peters (Footscray) and Will Madden (Essendon) and have their fingers crossed on whether crucial mid Lachie George is ready to make a return.

Veteran Liam Hoy will miss again. In a nutshell, the Lions fall shy on experience and polish in the absence of the aforementioned to sway an upset result. 

For the Burra, they’ll be seeking to broaden their avenues to goal. Hugo Papst (14 goals) has been a real find hitting the scoreboard in a support role for Toby Hutt (20 goals). Too often, Tony Lockyer (8 goals) is the Burras saving grace at either end. What a player. You wouldn't think eight rounds in only Papst and Hutt have kicked more goals. 

Despite having played all bottom four sides (4 wins between them), the Burra rank 5th for shots on goal and the same for points scored despite their #1 ranking for goal accuracy.

Clearly, they remain a work in progress, which is a dangerous thought for the remainder of the competition.    

Scoop’s tip: Sebastopol

After a weekend off, coaches, players and fans alike will all be hungry to get stuck back into the action this Saturday.

To suggest both sides need a win is an understatement.

For the Lakers, Saturday will mark 400 days since their las win, albeit a 102-point routing of the Panthers who will hit 100 weeks since their last on field success, a six-point win over the Lakers in their corresponding Round 9 fixture way back in 2022.

For one relieved outfit, the run of outs ends this weekend.

With all respect to Travis Hodgson and the Panthers, they're not in the same conversation as the Lakers despite sharing the same 'zero win' season to date.

The Lakers can boast mini wins, equating to four winning quarters from their 32, the Panthers are 0/28.

While scoring and defending has been a struggle for both sides, it's the Lakers who hold the advantage averaging 21 points MORE per game.

There's a similar pattern on the defensive front with Lakers conceding 33 points on average LESS than the Panthers.

Here's hoping the BFNL's Match of the Round is full of goals and game defining moments - enough for one team at least to savour in celebration and song.

It's all about making the most of an opportunity that beckons for these two sides in front of a keen viewing audience. Given the current landscape, who knows when the next victory salute will come.

It felt all clubs welcomed the Kings Birthday break, but if there was one I had to nominate as a possible exception, it would most certainly be East Point.

Since the Kangas’ bye in Round 2 they've won six games on the trot inflicting Melton and Sunbury with their only losses on the way.

Over the period Joe Carmody's Kangas have averaged near 114 points per game, conceding just 50.5 (avg per game) in the process.

If Gary Learmonth's Redan were looking for flaws in the Kangas camp, maybe something as simple as a break in continuity for the Kangas could provide an edge, especially early.

If the Lions could in fact get the jump, momentum can do wonderous things, especially for a young group that has double figure representation from their Under 19 and Under 17 stocks.   

On the flipside I fear for a young Lions group the break has invigorated the Kangas even further.

Their best is very good.

We've known that at the coal face and forward of the ball for a while, but the assurance found now behind the ball in the name of Jacob Brown and Jackson Merrett gives a new look for the Kangas despite their familiarity and experience.

Bryson McDougall, Strahan Robinson and Jack Jeffrey make up just part of the problems that lie ahead for the Lions given the Johnston brothers, Mickitja Rottumah-Onus and Joe Dodd's form through the midfield.

Needless to add, all are goalkicking mids (27 goals combined).

Learmonth will look for further progress from his young group as another timely footy audit presents in the name of East Point.

Excited for the potential debut of star recruit Lachie Bond (foot) who has not been seen since his four goal highlights reel against Drysdale in a pre-season practice match.

Lachie McLean (knee) who hasn't played all season is also in the mix for a return in a possible double boost for the Lions.

If Chris Maple's young Swans have any aspirations toppling North Ballarat at Mars Stadium, a good start hitting the scoreboard will be paramount.

The hosts have won 21/25 games at the venue since Brendan McCartney took over in 2021.

Ironically Ballarat (2022) was one of those four sides over the journey to upset the narrative, but it will be a much younger Swans outfit endeavouring to upset the winning trend of the Roosters (at home) and the pattern of conviction that comes with it.

Just scoring against the miserly North Ballarat defence has been a struggle for all opponents at Mars Stadium.

Since the start of 2023 the Roosters are 10 wins, two losses, conceding an average just shy of 48 points per game.

Given the cooler conditions forecasted, expect goals, especially for the visitors to come at a premium.

Clearly an improvement on the Swans effort here last year will earmark the bare minimum of expectation, no doubt the experienced Maple won't be beaten on what he already learnt here last year.

The Swans did lead at quarter time on that occasion and were within four points at the half.

The old 'better for longer' adage could not have been more fitting in the aftermath as McCartney's army extended after the break booting seven goals to two.

In the here and now, can the Swans marking game unsettle North Ballarat who are so accountable behind the ball?

The Swans will want to ensure their link up by foot is in order to find a way through especially in the absence of Rhett Montgomery (SANFL).

The Swans are not without a prizefighter’s chance, but I expect the pressure from the hosts at the coalface to prove the overwhelming difference.

The Roosters still have a few important cogs to return - namely Jamie Quick and Simon McCartin. Their presence only enhances the Roosters 'warm favorites' tag.

The King’s Birthday break was timely for these two sides amid a climbing injury toll ahead of their Round 9 clash at the Clarke Oval.

While the Burras’ on field woes, largely beyond their control, has attracted varying degrees of scrutiny, Sunbury copped some misfortune of their own with injuries to Mitch Lewis, Jake Egan, Nathan Doyle and earlier, season ending ACL tear for Tom Scanlon.

Ben Cameron (Coburg) and Harry Minton-Connell (Williamstown) remain in the VFL.

The loss of personnel surely played a role in the Lions’ first loss of the season on the road against the Kangas in Round 8.

Needless to add, Matty White's group was gallant in defeat despite trailing at every change.

Conceding periods of four and five goals in succession really was the difference.

Just what resemblance of each side’s best 22 we see on Saturday will surely play its own part but given the depth of the Lions and season returns of the Burra to date on the win/loss front, it's hard to entertain a conversation in the 'upset' camp.

But that notion will account for very little to Burra leader Tony Lockyer who is fully aware of where his team is at.

You have to admire the popular veteran having made little reference to the changes in personnel, that has clearly impacted the recent perennial finalists.

Sebastopol will arrive in Sunbury with every intention of winning, despite its unlikelihood.

Darley coach Dan Jordan gave the Burra some encouragement after the Devils’ 19-point win in Round 8 suggesting Lockyer's group will test, if not upset a few sides on the way home.

For Matthew White's Sunbury, it will be all about maintaining their good habits that led them to a promising 6-1 start to the season ahead of a Round 10 blockbuster against Melton.

Special mention to Lions’ forward Mitch McLean who is having a breakout season. His 24 goals to date (comp rank #4) has been complemented with 20 forward 50 tackles (Comp rank #1).

Call this bout an entree for the Bloods ahead of their top of the table clash on the road to Sunbury in Round 10 - a chance to regroup and fine tune after the week off.

Dennis Armfield's touring Cobras will have had a fortnight to identify and plan for their toughest assignment to date. So where do you start?

Sure, Braedan Kight's 41 goals (7 games) fits the 'concern' criteria.

The Bloods’ captain is averaging a goal every 3.5 disposals in 2024 which is truly remarkable for a 16 disposal player. The damage is not limited there either from the x-factor talent.

While Kight is shy of six feet in height, he leads the competition for marks inside 50 (5.1 avg per game), goal involvements (7.9) and ranks 6th for score involvements (9.9).

At the other end you have a dominant Bloods’ back six led by Jordy Cotter who ranks #1 at the club for kicks, efficiency by foot, marks, intercept marks and intercept possessions.

Only Sunbury's Tyson Lever has taken more intercept marks than Cotter. Keeping the ball away from him despite a clear message will be easier said than done.

The Cobras will need a 'spike' in most areas to compete against the relentless Bloods.

Jake Owen's importance is not capped by his contested marking ability alone (Comp rank #2). The star forward ranks #7 in the comp for both goal involvements (6.3 per game) and score involvements (9.6) - worthy of a bona fide match up from the Scoble camp.

Ruckman Luke Goetz leads the Cobras clearly for intercept marks ahead of defenders Jack Parente, Simon La Franchi and Collingwood VFL listed recruit Rye Penny.

Expect the Cobras, like all other BFNL sides to be stretched in the air and at ground level against the competition yardstick and be made to pay on the scoreboard for their inefficiencies.

With plenty of valuable wins on the board in Round 9, there will be eyeballs everywhere across the league awaiting results.

It was nothing short of an epic battle the last time these two sides met.

With a grand final berth on the line, East Point and Darley went toe-to-toe into overtime at Marty Busch Reserve.

It was the Kangaroos who emerged victorious, advancing to their third grand final in five full seasons.

But as we approach the halfway mark of 2025, it’s the Devils who come in as favourites for this cracking Round 9 clash.

While the overall head-to-head between the two is relatively even, a strong trend has emerged — home ground dominance.

Since 2018, these clubs have played ten home-and-away fixtures against each other.

Only one of those games has been won by the away team, with Darley boasting a perfect 4-0 record at home and East Point 5-1 on their turf.

Statistically, the two sides are well matched, though Darley edge ahead slightly in most key areas.

Accuracy in front of goal has been a major weapon for the Devils, while East Point trail — coming off an 18.23 scoreline in Round 8.

That conversion rate must tighten if they want to get a win on the road.

The Roos will be boosted by the return of Matt Johnston and Joe Dodd — two crafty ball users through the midfield — while Darley welcome back the Adam Azzopardi.

Roos defenders Liam Howard and Sam Cue will need to rise to the occasion to stem the Devils’ forward 50 entries.

At the other end, Darley’s Billy Myers has been the general down back all season, a key part of the league’s stingiest defence.

Forwards Bryson McDougall and Jordan Johnston will need to make the most of every chance that comes their way.

It’s been more than a decade since East Point last claimed a win on Darley’s home deck — will history be re-written this weekend?

As with all clashes in Round 9, the Ballarat and Melton matchup highlights just how vital four points are at this point in the season.

For the Bloods, a win secures a top-two position at the halfway mark.

A loss, however, could see them slip as low as fourth in what’s shaping up to be one of the tightest ladders in recent memory.

The Swans currently sit six points clear of sixth-placed Redan, but with injuries piling up and the lowest percentage among the top eight, a loss here could make their second half of the season a serious uphill battle.

Melton has certainly had the upper hand in this rivalry in recent years, winning nine of the past ten encounters.

That said, these sides have only met twice at Alfredton Recreation Reserve since 2019 — with Ballarat winning in 2019 and Melton returning the favour in 2022.

If Ballarat wants to challenge the Bloods, they’ll need to capitalise on their inside 50 entries.

On average, Melton are +10 in that area — a stat that has helped them control games and build scoreboard pressure.

But if there's one area Troy Scoble’s group can target, it’s Melton’s conversion: the Bloods have recorded more points than goals this season, leaving the door ajar for opposition.

Ballarat will unveil an exciting debutant in 16-year-old Emerton Hooper.

His selection is a testament to the strength of the club’s development pathways and the trust they’re placing in their next generation.

Melton, meanwhile, remains largely unchanged, with the only notable omission being Ryan Carter, unavailable due to interstate commitments.

There’s plenty on the line in this clash — and not just the four points.

Sunbury sit fourth on the ladder heading into the halfway mark of the season. A win could see them jump into the top two, while a loss wouldn’t knock them out of the four, but it would make a top-three finish much tougher to lock in.

For Bacchus Marsh, a win keeps their finals hopes well and truly alive.

But depending on other Round 9 results, a loss could see them slip out of the six — and suddenly in need of a few upsets in the back half of the year.

Clarke Oval has long been a tough hunting ground for the Cobras, with just three wins there — 2015, 2018, and 2023.

History suggests they’ll need to be at their best to break through once again.

For that to happen, a strong first half is essential.

Sunbury have been the most damaging side offensively this season, leading the league in total scores — thanks largely to the forward trio of Jake Sutton, Daniel Johnston, and Jake Egan.

Slowing their influence will be critical, with Tarkyn Findlay likely handed a key shutdown role.

While Bacchus Marsh have consistently finished games strong, their third quarters have been their Achilles heel.

With the Lions’ ability to score quickly and in bursts, Dennis Armfield’s group will need a complete four-quarter performance to challenge them.

If the Cobras can bring their trademark tackling pressure and disrupt Sunbury’s quick ball movement, they’ll be in with a shot.

But if the Lions bring the same consistent brand they’ve shown so far in 2025, they’ll be hard to stop on home turf.

It’s essentially a must-win for both teams at Marty Busch this weekend.

With just two wins apiece so far, both Clint Proctor and Tony Lockyer would have hoped for more from the opening half of the season.

But despite slow starts, both sides remain in the hunt for finals — and this clash will go a long way to deciding who stays in the race.

Thanks to a stronger percentage, North Ballarat sits just two points outside the six.

A win here could see them leapfrog into a finals position by weekend’s end.

For the Burra, their Round 8 win over Bacchus Marsh has breathed new life into their campaign, and with the gap to sixth spot only four points, it’s games like these that become critical in the chase.

Since the beginning of 2019, Sebastopol has had the edge in this match-up, winning five of their last eight encounters.

They’ve only hosted the Roosters twice at Marty Busch Reserve in that period — both ending in wins for the home side.

The Roosters will be forced to shuffle the magnets with Cam McCallum sidelined through injury.

Expect Ryan Luke to rotate through the middle more frequently, with his support ruck work sure to test Burra big man Liam Stow.

With Lockyer back in the line-up for Sebastopol, centre bounce contests and stoppage clearances should tighten right up.

While neither side boasts a dominant goalkicker, both have benefitted from a healthy spread of contributors up forward.

That makes defensive organisation all the more important, both back six units will need to be switched on, covering all avenues to goal.

Expect intercept marking and team defence structures — like pressing high and zoning back — to be key for both outfits in what could be a low-scoring grind.

With finals on the line and momentum up for grabs, this one looms as a classic scrap between two sides with plenty to prove.

Wins have been hard to come by for both teams this season — both showing glimpses of well-executed, finals-worthy football, but neither able to convert consistently.

Redan has had the edge in recent history, winning four of their last five and six of their past nine encounters with the Lakers.

However, last season told a different story — each side claimed a narrow win on their home turf, proving there's not much separating them when they bring their best.

Injury has continued to plague the Lions, with coach Gary Learmonth digging deep into the club's youth stocks to fill key roles.

It's created opportunity but has also tested Redan’s depth week in and week out.

For Rohan Brown and the Lakers, success this season isn’t solely defined by wins — but on paper, this is one of their best chances to bank four points.

At close to full strength, and facing a depleted Redan outfit sitting just one rung above them on the ladder, Lake Wendouree will need to leave nothing in the tank.

Winning the clearances is step one, but for the Lakers, they simply need to generate more forward entries.

Angus Gove has done plenty of work rebounding out of the backline, but it’ll be the likes of Will Clark and Kynan Raven that need to impact the other end by delivering the ball inside 50 with purpose.

For the Lions, winning the contested footy will be crucial — an area where Jake Connolly and Brody Pope have led the charge this year.

Redan have managed to get the ball inside 50 consistently enough, but it’s conversion that’s let them down.

Accuracy in front of goal will be a major focus if they’re to take control of this one.

With both clubs desperate for a win, expect a spirited clash between two proud sides.

The first week of finals presents us with three blockbuster games all with their own intriguing storylines this coming weekend.

We've waited 105 days for this rematch, and it comes in the form of a mouthwatering qualifying final - can't wait!

Round 6 is a far cry from the hustle, bustle and pressure of a final but in fairness, May 18th went pretty close!

What an outstanding home and away season for these two, losing just three games between them.

The Kangas could find themselves a little stiff not to finish top with just the two losses but that is the current landscape when the Bloods are involved.

Despite finishing second, the Kangas have plenty of upside heading into this bout having beaten the Bloods the last two times including a semi final win last year.

While both of those wins came away from Eastern Oval, Darley Park looms as an undeniable variable for mine to overcome.

East Point have not won at Darley Park for 10 years, that worries me.

If this game were in Ballarat, I would be tipping the Kangas but something tells me the ground and conditions will suit Troy Scoble's planning - he knows the ground so well.

Call it due diligence ahead of time but I guarantee you - observations duly noted.

Even Joe Carmody, a longtime player in the BFNL could barely recall any success at the venue!

But if there was ever a group to break the run of outs for the Kangas at Darley Park, it's this one against the Bloods.

Melton are gettable - the Kangas’ best is arguably better. But can they produce in the white shorts against the season benchmark.

The Bloods, it seems, have been waiting for this day for a while now and I’m not talking weeks, rather 11 months for another crack at a flag that has previously gone awry.

At least Scoble conceded they weren't the best team in it last year, but something tells me that opinion has changed.

The buy-in from the Bloods group is palpable. While they gave every indication last week, they're gettable, so did East Point! Kudos to Ballarat.

Holistically, every bit of blood, sweat and tears shed to this point equate to an unmissable qualifying final, spruik as one for the ages.

As part of the editorial, I’m required to make a choice. I'm leaning to the Bloods but would not be surprised if the Kangas produced the goods following a timely reminder of their mortality last week.

PLAYER WATCH

Defenders
Melton: Adrian Monitto (#45), Riley Walker (#29) and Lachie Phillips (#9)are the genesis in transition for the Bloods. Monitto and Walker especially provide the spread, run, carry and distribution in the absence of Jordy Cotter (#4)and will stretch the ground, making it uncomfortable for the Kangas.

East Point: Jackson Merrett (#1) and Jacob Brown (#4)are the experience and cornerstone of the Kangas’ defence. Merrett ranks fourth for in the comp uncontested marks, fifth for marks and sixth for effective kicks and tenth for kicks. Merrett is the go-to distributor. Brown, not dissimilar to Merrett ranks third in the comp for effective kicks, fourteenth for kicks, fourth for marks AND intercept marks. What is also worthy of note is Brown ranks twenty-second in the comp for handball receives.  

Midfielders
Melton: Jaycob Hickey (#10)averages 27.6 disposals, ranks 9 in the comp for clearances and 11th for goal involvements while (#11) Jack Walkeraverages 26.6 disposals, ranks 8 for goal assists and 13th for centre clearances.

East Point: Matty Johnston (#7)ranks third in the comp for disposals (34.1) and contested possessions. Johnston also features in the top 10 for a host of other KPIs and ranks elite in all areas when the Kangas have possession of the ball. Mikitja Rottumah-Onus (#2)ranks among the top 25 in the comp for clearances, contested possessions, handballs, hard ball gets, ground ball gets, goal assists and involvements. 

Forwards
Melton: Braedan Kight (#7)is the league’s leading goalkicker with 75. Ryan Carter (#23)is fifth on the goalkicking table with 41.

East Point: Bryson McDougall (#12)is second in the league for goals with 67. McDougall has taken more marks inside 50 than other player in the BFNL and ranks second for total contested marks. Strahan Robinson (#30)has 31 goals, ranks elite for contested marks and marks inside 50 (10th).

Haven't the Swans raised a few eyebrows in the back half of the season, unbeaten since round 10 including a win over Sunbury!

A fourth placed finish for the Swans would have surprised even the most loyal of supporter with Melton, East Point and Darley the only teams finishing above them.

For the record Ballarat has played 7 games this year against top six opposition for two wins and a draw, averaging 54 points FOR and 90 points AGAINST with a poor percentage of 60.

Those numbers amount to very little in the here and now following a breakout win over East Point.

Let's just hope the emotional toll of last week’s feat doesn't drain the life out of this young group who find themselves without no ceiling on the 'possible'.

The competition did look up and take notice, you can take that to the bank.

In fact, none more so than Lions’ coach Matty White who said on ‘The Presser’ a month ago he was “happy not to be playing the Swans again,”.

Footy can be an unpredictable vehicle for planning.

Here we are week one of the finals and Sunbury find themselves up the highway for a rendezvous eliminator against the plucky Swans.

Sunbury have lost their last six games against top six opposition and will be challenged again in Ballarat albeit at Sebastopol.

Injuries I’m sure have derailed Matty White's season that started so promisingly.

The loss of key backs in the latter stages and the recent hamstring injury to midfielder Jake Egan hasn't made the assignment any easier.

For Ballarat aren't the same side they were 10 weeks ago.

Chris Maple's group are a bona fide threat to any oppo.

The group are healthy, in form and bat deep.

Tristan Maple, Lachie Dalgleish, Harry Butler, Will Liston, the Rinaldi brothers and Rhys Perry have all gone to another level impacting BFNL games while the staple core of Angus Bade, Marcus Powling and Andrew Hooper present their own set of challenges.

Apologies to the more than capable remainder.

While Sunbury are in with a real chance to progress, momentum for me is with the Swans.

Ballarat: Rhys Perry (#53) has proven to be solid key defender who ranks elite for intercept marks, contested marks, spoils and 1%ers while the experienced rebound and distribution of Lachie Dalgleish (#14)will be crucial for the Swans. Dalgleish averages 18 kicks from his 22 disposals @74% efficiency. Also ranks elite for marks, intercept marks and possessions, rebound 50s and spoils.

Sunbury: Tyson Lever (#4) ranks second in the comp for Intercept marks (4.9), third for marks (9.1), fourth for intercept possessions (10.3), fifth for spoils (4.1) and tenth for rebound 50s (5.5). 

Midfielders
Ballarat: Will Liston (#2)is a two-time club best and fairest winner who ranks elite for disposals (23.2), contested possessions (10.8), clearances (7.1) and Tackles (6.9 - comp rank #10). Tristan Maple (#7)shares his time between half back/mid and knows how to find the footy averaging 29.2 disposals @76% (comp rank #9) A predominant 'kick' (20/29) sees him an integral part of the Swans’ work between the arcs. Maple is also among the elite rankings for intercept possessions, intercept marks and rebound 50s. The Footscray VFL listed product ranks third in the comp for handball receives and fifth for effective kicks.

Sunbury: Josh Guthrie (#5)ranks elite in all categories with the ball - disposals 33.1 @76% efficiency (comp rank #3), clearances (7.4), Inside 50s (4), Marks (5.9), Goal and score involvements (4.4, 7.3). Guthrie ranks 1 in the comp for handballs (17.4) and 6 for ground ball gets 11.2.

Forwards
Ballarat: Andrew Hooper (#4)is the dangerous small forward with 23 goals from 14 games. Harry Butler (#25)has played 7 games this year for the Swans including six wins and a draw. The athletic key forward ranks elite for goal involvements (5.1) and score involvements (7.9) as well as contested marks and ranks 14th for goals (2.3)

Sunbury:Lead up forward Jake Sutton (#14)has kicked 64 goals (comp rank #3) while pressure forward Mitch McLean (#15)finished in 7th with a breakout 40 goal season. The tale of these two speaks for itself - both make up 46.4% of all Sunbury goals.

Ballarat

Darley will start warm favourites on their home deck when they face North Ballarat on Sunday.

Managed trio Matthew Brett, Luther Baker and Matt Denham will return for the Devils who are beginning to resemble something like their best 22 at the right time of the season.

The journey hasn't been smooth sailing for the Roosters either, with a host of key players absent for some, if not all, second half of the season.

While the latest setback, a hamstring injury to Simon McCartin in Round 17 will sideline him for another week, the Roosters’ chances look set for a boost if Riley Polkinghorne (ankle -Round 10) and Ryan Hobbs (hamstring – Round 14) are made available.     

The Roosters’ defence will struggle to match the Devils’ height and aerial presence forward as Brady Wright, Billy Myers and Will Johnson look to capitalise.

Only Noah Cockerill and Liam Deering from the Roosters’ last hit-out in Round 17 resemble any suitable, go-to option.

The fitness of Ryan Hobbs will be crucial to their chances - surely, he's ready to go but will be in need of the run.

The midfield battle is always highly competitive.

The Devils’ combo of Brett Bewley, Luther Baker and Matty Denham is as good as any in the BFNL and will ask questions of a less experienced midfield who know how to find the footy.

Just what advantage the Roosters’ mids can get at the feet of big man Cam McCallum will tell its own story in the aftermath.

Expectations on Polkinghorne in the event of a return will be measured.

The Devils’ defence will need to be on their mettle holding out Roosters’ trio Joel Freeman, Ned Nash and Hugh Trigg.

What is brought to ground will surely open the door for a few speedy Roosters to pounce, removing much of the reliance on Freeman, who is responsible for 45% of North Ballarat's goals in their last four games (18/40).   

While windy, difficult conditions are forecast you can be guaranteed this game will be fought tooth and nail on the inside with very little on offer for the feint hearted.

I expect the Devils to progress with too much firepower for the Roosters who remain essentially in the 'undermanned' space.

North Ballarat: Josh Sparkman (#1)is new to the midfield role after VFL experience -elite for disposals (28.5) and 5th in the comp for handball receives and 7th for intercept possessions (8.9) while Riley Polkinghorne (#27) Ranks 3rd in comp for I50s (6.9), 11th in comp for disposals (29.6) and 3rd for ball up clearances (4.4)

Forwards
Darley: Brady Wright (#15)ranks 8th in the comp for contested marks (2.8) and 14th for Marks I50 (2.6) while the medium sized Will Johnson (#22)can play tall with the forward converting 23 goals in 11 games.

North Ballarat: Joel Freeman (#30)has kicked 18 goals in his last 4 games with three bags of five and a finish of three while Ned Nash (#3) has converted 26 goals in a smaller role.

Season 2021 is just four days away, and amongst those expected to be in the action at the end of the home and away season are the Sunbury Lions. The loss of serious firepower up forward has created opportunities for emerging talent, and Scoop is reserving judgement on how the Lions will shape up as the scoreboard will tell the story.

Scoop’s 2021 prediction: 4th - 6th

EXPECT Sunbury's enviable depth and impressive record at home to be tested in the anticipation of a repeat finals appearance in 2021.

Questions loom large of a Lions forward line that was once plentiful of options. Sunbury's forward stocks are looking depleted at best, given four of their leading five goalkickers from 2019 have moved on. Lachie Bramble (leading goalkicker with 21 goals) will miss all local footy after Hawthorn added the talented midfielder to their AFL list, while Jack Landt (20), Jack Sheehan (13) and Jarrah Maksymow (13) have also left the building. Only half-forward Alec Goodsen (19) remains. The fact is, 77 goals (including Dylan Landt’s 10) out of a season total of 180 kicked in 2019, a massive 44 per cent of the 2019 tally, is a lot to lose.

If that wasn't enough for a hungry Lions list to overcome, star midfielder Mitch Conn faces a weekly fly-in, fly-out scenario after the club confirmed his partner had been promoted and transferred to Sydney for work.

Lions coach Travis Hodgson concedes that while not ideal overall, recent events have been beyond the club’s control.

"While we're in good knick and [have] done near everything right, you can never predict the unpredictable," he said.

"We're still hopeful that on the back of our off-season recruits and growth of our younger blokes [that] the fight for spots remains a healthy one."

In some good news for Lions fans, Hodgson did confirm the recent signing of star ruckman David Kovacevic (St Albans) on a part-time basis to aid top five 2019 Best and Fairest finisher Jayden Eales.

"Eales has been very good for us and adding Kovacevic just takes the pressure off a bit in such a demanding position on the ground, especially in the BFNL," Hodgson said.

"We expect to gain eight to ten games out of a gun who I'm sure everyone who follows BFNL would be familiar with.

“There's no dispute with Kovacevic – A-Grader!"

Sunbury had gained the services of former Port Power Physiotherapist Andrew Hall to run the fitness program pre-COVID; a decision that has already an impact on some of the established stars at the club.

"[Alik] Magin is flying, and new recruit Daniel Toman looks super fit and ready to go," Hodgson said.

Toman (Port Melbourne, Bendigo Gold, Woodend) will slot straight into the midfield, while other newbies, namely Haydn Ross (Riddell - forward/mid), *Harrison Milton-Connell (Port Melbourne, Calder Cannons) and Aaron Christenson (return) will provide the support network for Magin and Jayden Eales. Boom signing Tyson Lever (Coburg) is expected to hold down the number one role in defence at centre half back.

Ross, on the other hand, who was earmarked for a role in the midfield, could find himself forward to fill a shortage of recognised goal scorers. At Riddell in 2018, Ross booted 79 goals to finish the RDFL's leading goalkicker. It’s a move that makes sense.

Unfortunately for the Lions, inside-mid Greg Hay and key swingman Jack Sheehan have opted for another year off. Sources say Hay and Sheehan did not miss footy as much as they thought they would in 2020, joining seasoned campaigners Grant Valles (Old Xaviers), Daylan Kempster (Keilor Park/travel), Jarrah Maksymow (Albury), Jack Landt (Dimboola), Dylan Landt (Doutta Stars), Nathan Bridgland (Riddell) and Will Healy (Sunbury Kangaroos) on a mounting exit list.

There are also confirmed reports that 186cm young gun and 2020 Lions signing Jake Sutton is SANFL bound, most likely to Central Districts. The 19-year-old leaves the club without playing a single game.

But with loss comes opportunity, according to Hodgson.

"There's a real chance for our young talent to step up," he said.

"Luke Goater, Thomas Werner and Jacob Bygate will get their chance."

The Lions have made Clarke Oval a nightmare for visitors over the past two seasons, having won 15 of their last 16 games. Ironically, seven of eight wins at home in 2018 wasn't enough to secure a finals berth. Unbeaten at home in 2019 and a fourth placing on the table with eleven season wins, these Lions are coming with a feverish appetite to improve on the road in 2021 (noting that they won just four of the last 16 games across 2018 and 2019, running at just 25 per cent at the pointy end of the home and away).

For the keen observer weighing progress, we lie in wait, holding judgment and with a cheeky eye fixed fairly on the scoreboard, as there are some undeniable big outs.

Scoop' Reviews the Queen's Birthday Match

It was a huge day at Maddingley Park and there was a lot more than just a belting on-field performance by Bacchus Marsh on display. The Cobras brought Big Freeze 8 to the McDonald's Ballarat FNL in great style and celebrated their 2016 Premiership reunion and Tyson Shea's 250th game.

The Cobras are knocking on the door of the top six following their comprehensive 51-point win over Sunbury in Saturday's standalone Queens Birthday match at Maddingley Park.

A large crowd made the trip in support of the MND cause to witness the pre-game slide fundraiser led by former Western Bulldog champion and local favourite Doug Hawkins. The Cobra crew do a fantastic job in the football community raising money and awareness, earmarking the Queen’s Birthday weekend as their own on the BFNL calendar and drawing the interest of national TV networks Seven and Nine, who covered the event on their news platforms.

On the field, the Cobras put this game to bed early with six unanswered goals in the second quarter to set up a match-winning 47-point lead. For the record, their 10.4-64 score line at the main break was their best return (of any half) this season. And they did it all (on the scoreboard) without inspirational Captain Jake Owen, who has found himself in defence over the last two games in the absence of Jack Williams and Jason Robinson who remain side-lined with injury. Owen was still considered BOG by many in his rebounding role with double figure marks, proving the catalyst in transition, while denying the visitors any impact on the scoreboard.

Cobras ruckman Daniel Burton (2 goals) was back to his Henderson Medal-winning form, dominating at hit-outs and around the ground. Forwards Aaron Willetts and youngster Joel Freeman were rewarded for playing in front, making the most of their opportunities to finish with four goals. Cobra midfielders Harry King, Tom German, Max Eastmure and Jack Parente looked energised in a milestone game response to club legend Tyson Shea's 250th game. Shea too was typically in an under, adrenaline still riding high having run through (carefully!) a dedicated banner with his two children ahead of the opening bounce.

For Sunbury, they look a world away from what their ability suggests on paper, but the future looks bright as they get more games into Cody Bramble, Jake Egan, Jack Newitt, Lachie Urbon and Mitch McLean. Ball magnet and Lions captain Daniel Toman missed a second successive game, which didn’t help the visitors cause, but Harrison Minton-Connell stood up in his absence to be their best player. The Lions struggles continue forward with just the six goals, and all singles despite the inclusion of Essendon VFL listed targets Jake Sutton and Cooper Anderson.

In closing, it was clearly the Cobras’ best team effort of the year with notable contributions from near all 22 players. For Sunbury however, it may well have been their worst.
