The McDonald's Ballarat FNL is pleased to announce the details of Week Three of the Carlton Draught Finals Series. 

After a thrilling one-point victory at City Oval, Ballarat moves through to the Preliminary Final to play Sebastopol in a blockbuster game. The winner will progress to the 2022 Carlton Draught Senior Men's Grand Final to take on Melton. 

In what has been a thrilling A-Grade Netball finals series, Redan will have Darley to contend with as we wait to see who will face North Ballarat in the 2022 Carlton Draught A-Grade Grand Final.

Preliminary Final day will be held at City Oval, Ballarat with, netball to kick off at 9:00AM and football from 9:55AM.

Returning to the competition and his home club in 2022, Brett polled in 13 of his 16 games. Finishing the count on a massive 29 votes there was no surprise when Brett was announced as the 2022 Henderson Medallist.

Soli became the first Melton South player to claim the coveted McLean Medal for the A-Grade Netball Best & Fairest last night. Soli, who also represents the Samoan national team, polled 21 votes in the count.

The McDonald's Ballarat Football Netball League Senior Fixture for 2022 has been released, with a full fixture of 18 rounds plus finals planned.

The board is pleased to announce the final fixture for the upcoming 2022 McDonald's Ballarat FNL Senior season. 

This season is hoped to build on the momentum from the 2021 season that was cut short, with a full fixture of 18 rounds plus finals planned. 

In keeping with tradition, all clubs will play 16 games and have two scheduled byes. 

Round One kicks off on Saturday 9thApril, while Round Two is split across the following weekends, with Lake Wendouree to host Redan on Good Friday, being the first Round Two game. 

The Queen's Birthday full competition bye will return after being well received in 2021 with Bacchus Marsh hosting Sunbury this weekend as a Round Nine stand-alone game. 

Details of night and twilight games will be advised after discussions with the clubs as we lead up to the start of the season.

21 BFNL junior boys and 18 BFLW girls have been named in the GWV Rebels V/Line Cup squad for 2022. Representing the quality and development of the Ballarat FNL as the peak junior competition in the region.

The AFL Commissions of Goldfields, Western District & Wimmera Mallee, in conjunction with the GWV Rebels are delighted to announce the girls and boys squads to be considered to compete in the 2022 VLine Cup in Shepparton.

The VLine Cup will take place between Monday 19^th Sept and Tuesday 20^th Sept 2022 in Shepparton. The GWV Rebels VLine Cup squad was selected from club, representative and trial games held across all 3 regions.

The coaches of both the girls and boys squads are very excited with the assembled talented players that have been selected in the initial squads.

Training sessions will occur Monday 29^th August, Monday 5^th & 12^th September at Alexandra Oval in Ararat.

ON THE RECORD

SCOOP: Well Macca, so close last year - your impact at the club with organic development over your three years has ticked all the boxes. When do results start to take precedent (to an extent) over pure development. Should that even be a thing at local level in your opinion?  

Brendan McCartney: A good coaching program is developing winners. The learnings and education that comes with loss (while not ideal) are significant. I'm as competitive as anyone but you can't afford to dwell on loss to move forward. When everybody is heading in the right direction, good things will happen. 

SCOOP: The club is not shy on talent and were all available (bar Tom Hotchin) for last year’s grand final. Are there any missing pieces (ideally) that would see the club take the next level?

BM: The missing piece is further development and maturity. The boys did an amazing job last year, they dug in and had a crack every week and were in all bar one or two games.

SCOOP: Three years in and heading into a fourth - give us your thoughts on the level of quality in the BFNL - would it stack up against other premier country leagues?

BM: Just below top shelf but definitely I would like to think we're in the top third going around. Our teams have been very competitive against GFL teams for example over recent years (practice matches).

SCOOP: Could the BFNL have a season where every team plays each other twice or do you think that's too long given it's part time nature. What would be your version of ideal?

BM: Anything with a planned strategy is doable. Variables, ie salary cap would need reviewing and naturally the general cost to clubs and operation of the season would be more expensive. Ideally, not beyond the realms of possibility.

SCOOP: I know how highly you rate Tom Hotchin who has had a wretched run with 2 ACL setbacks, can we expect to see him at any stage impacting the forward line?

BM: Unlikely but we're rapt to have added him into the coaching ranks. Tom is a North Ballarat person, and the players love him.

SCOOP: Tell us about exciting young and new additions Noah Cockerill and Mal White... 

BM: Both have been in pathway programs. Cockerill (Gold Coast academy) made his senior debut as 15yo up in Cairns and has been playing against men for the last three years down back. He's a big strong kid. White (Geelong Falcons) is a super competitive, tough, athletic midfield type who played finals with the Falcons last year.

BM: Pressure, fit and strong.

PROJECTED IMPROVEMENT

BM: Offensively more adventurous. Added depth and height in key areas.

SCOOP: While there's not much in it North Ballarat do have the third hardest draw according to my formula. Double ups with Darley, Melton, East Point and Redan including four trips to the East will challenge McCartney and his young group. Byes in first and last rounds can be interpreted as you see fit (plus or minus). Last year's runners-up H&A season begins in Round 2 v Darley before a road trip in Round 3 to face Melton. Will want to be up and about early. While any bit of luck for North Ballarat will surely be earned this far out, you would assume the Roosters are finals bound again with further improvement under McCartney expected.

The fixture looks a little different for 2025.

With Melton South moving to the RDFNL, all clubs will face each other twice, guaranteeing a season filled with competitive football and netball.

We look forward to seeing some impressive matches across the season both on the field and court.

Round 1 kicks off on Saturday 5th of April 2025. Ballarat will host North Ballarat in the first “Night Match” of the season.

Good Friday football returns to the fixture in 2025, with Bacchus Marsh hosting East Point and Sunbury hosting Redan, followed by the second year running of Lake Wendouree v Ballarat on Anzac Day under lights.

We have some important rounds across the season.

Please take note of these dates, further information will be provided as we near each round.

Round 2 – April the 12th – Wellness Round
Round 3 – April the 25th - Anzac Day
Round 6 & 7 – May 17th & 24th - Indigenous Round
Round 16 – August the 2nd – RMCH Round

Interleague will also make its return in 2025, with the BFNL set to host Hampden for the annual competitions.

INSIDER: Congratulations on making it through to a Grand Final - the response in last week’s Preliminary was emphatic - how’s your confidence levels and the general vibe of the group heading into the big one?

BRENDAN MCCARTNEY: Forgive the run against Darley in SF2 but we're still improving.

INSIDER: Does the 'just another game' cliche fit a Grand Final in your eyes?

BM:Well, it is. It's a game of footy - you do your best - whatever happens, happens. The heightened interest is more external.

INSIDER: It's the club’s first Grand Final appearance since 2015 - have you managed to tick all the boxes since your appointment? Unfortunately, we'll never know how your undefeated 2021 season would end...

BM:Our aim has been to provide a pathway for our younger blokes and we're doing that.

INSIDER: How are you enjoying your return to local footy?

BM:Been great. Had a ball largely due to the quality of people at the club.

INSIDER: From your observations how is the standard of footy in the BFNL - would it stack up around the state?

BM:The good teams play well and would measure up.

INSIDER: Name the #1 non-negotiable we would expect you to write first on the white board?

BM:Attack the ball.

INSIDER: You've one of the more premier ruckman in the comp in Cam McCullum - more broadly, how do you value the importance of the ruckman in modern day footy?

BM:Critical. They've always been super important. First picked.

INSIDER: Who has been the one opposition player that has caused you the most grief in any one game?

BM:Simon Black when I was at the Cats.

INSIDER: What other sport could you coach at a high level if there were no footy?

INSIDER: Your girls are flying undefeated at the moment, what do you attribute to the success of the North Ballarat netball program?

GEORGETTE PAATSCH:Hard working and committed. We really enjoy playing with and for one another and I think that translates to on court success.....oh and the fact that we all like each other is a bonus too!

INSIDER: You meet fellow undefeated team Darley in the Match of the Round this week, how are the confidence levels?

GP:We have an unchanged team from last year and we're quietly confident our connection will hold up. But, they will certainly give us a run that's for sure!

INSIDER: How much training goes on from week to week in preparation for games?

GP:90 mins on Thursday nights are compulsory. Extra training is expected in own time around individual work/life schedule.

INSIDER: Does the group engage in a pre-season regime similar to the football program?

GP:It's not as intense as the men (footy) but there are expectations on the group to maintain a level of fitness in the off season.

INSIDER: Considering all clubs are essentially netball and football clubs now, how do you rate - firstly the inclusiveness and secondly the importance of the Netball program to local clubs?  

GP:North are really good and I’m aware Sebastopol have a great culture / team environment as well. More and more footballers are catching some of the netball too which is a real positive.

INSIDER: How do you think the standard of the Ballarat (A Grade) competition stacks up against other regions across Victoria?

GP:Really strong. I played 10+ years in the Geelong FNL and I’m sure we could match it with the top sides over there.

INSIDER: What other sport could you play at a high level if there were no netball?

GP:AFL - yeah, i'd give footy a go!

NED NASH:Maccas’ (Brendan McCartney’s) idea. Practice match theory, add a string to the bow. Was once a forward in juniors.
