CONS:FIVE trips to Ballarat, including FOUR in SIX weeks from Round 8 to Round 13, up against North Ballarat Round 8, Lake Wendouree in Round 9, Ballarat in Round 11 and East Point in Round 13

-  Tough draw in the first SIX rounds despite having FOUR at HOME – (Melton South HOME, Sunbury AWAY, Sebastopol HOME, Darley AWAY, East Point HOME, Redan HOME)

- Play FOUR of 2019 Finalists TWICE, including Grand Final duo East Point and Sebastopol, as well as Sunbury and Darley

Comment:They came close in 2018 and 2019 but have lost some key personnel. With (in my opinion) an unfavourable 2021 draw, the Bloods will need to do plenty right to guarantee a finals berth in what is shaping up to be an improving season across the board despite the salary cap reduction.

Melton 2025 Season Preview

With the 2025 season on the horizon, Scoop has caught up with all our senior footy coaches as we build towards an epic Round 1!

First cab off the rank is the reigning premier, Melton, as Troy Scoble gets his team ready for a flag defence.

SCOOP: Well Scobes, you're now officially the hunted following an 18-1 season capped by an emotional premiership win. Back-to-back is a tough ask - do you consider changing a system that is already proven?

TROY SCOBLE: We were really proud of our club’s performance in 2024. Our first year together was planned to be the foundational component of the system. Our players have been a part of this system for (essentially) 19 games. The first part of the season focused on the learning component, while the latter was more about consolidation of those learnings. The 2024 game style was for THAT playing group noting opposition and weather condition variables. All clubs will have changed so we have to continue the build on the foundational components to keep developing our game style with a focus on key areas in each phase of the game.

S: How about the hunger of the players - do you subscribe to the theory there's a natural drop-off with intensity/buy-in after a flag?

TS: My previous experience post premiership success tells me some players are driven for more success and improvement, and some feel fulfilled and don't have as strong internal drive. That's natural and we will go into the new season with that mindset. The 2025 Melton Bloods squad has players wanting to develop their game, wanting to be better players and plenty wanting a taste of what others have experienced. With a large squad, the player who is best prepared to play the role required will be suitably rewarded with their opportunity.

S: Billy Crofts returns after a stint with Geelong and the Western Bulldogs at VFL level - tell us about his player type and likely role.

TS: Billy commenced his VFL career with Geelong when I was there and has really grown as a person and footballer through his time with the Cats and more recently the Western Bulldogs. Billy is an inside mid with speed, power and strength in the contest - can play anywhere. While he remains a Footscray VFL listed player, coming home has been rewarding for the club to continue developing our own and provide Billy with more opportunities to play alongside childhood mates he grew up (playing) with.

S: You lose tireless campaigner Brett McIntrye (travel) - will Jono O'Brien and Josh Stewart assume the ruck duties?

TS: Brett, who will remain connected to the group, was really important for us in 2024 with Jono O’Brien’s injury and Josh Stewart early in the development of his career. While we're excited about having Jono back and the opportunity to keep progressing Josh's footy, we expect to roll a number of players through that role during the year pending the scenario we face.

S: Leading forward Ryan Carter is expected to play just ten games this year - please explain...

TS: Ryan's partner took up an amazing opportunity in Brisbane that the club is genuinely excited for and fully supports. Ryan's connection with the club is really strong, and with a number of return trips to Melbourne we are really pleased he wants to continue his footy with the group he loves so much. We are yet to finalise what that looks like with the amount of games etc, but it will be significant. Ryan has connected with a mate of mine coaching in the QAFL so we know he will have access to quality training. When he is not with us it provides great opportunities for some of our younger key position types to gain senior exposure.

S: Key intercept defender Jordy Cotter (foot) has not been since round nine - how's he tracking for a return?

TS: Jordy was a significant loss to our group. He pushed hard for a finals return but the injury was far more significant than originally thought as he experienced first-hand during his rehab. Jordy supported the group throughout that whole period. He already saw the game well and hopefully there will be some real positives for him to draw on when he returns. Jordy is progressing well through the break and continues to throw himself into making sure he ticks every box for a successful return. Players at his level are very hard to find so we look forward to having him back.

S: Adam Kennedy (GWS) and Jack Watkins (Port Adelaide SANFL) have been spoken to for a possible return - what is the likelihood of acquiring these two?

TS: Jack earned an amazing opportunity to train with Port Adelaide for a Supplementary Selection Period list opportunity and is performing really well. We hope that eventuates and we see Jack in Port colours in 2025. Adam has commenced his post AFL playing career with a Development Coaching role at the Sydney Swans. Both boys supported us strongly throughout 2024 and remain connected to the club and our group. Seeing Adam is more likely than seeing Jack.

S: Jack Walker and Jaycob Hickey play 'high minutes' through the midfield for you - can we expect more of the same or can we expect some new blood rotated through the area?

TS: Our mids play similar game time each week. We rotate a number of players through that bracket on game day which adds to our flexibility. Those two (Jack and Jaykob) may play 'higher minutes' but the reality is - that is their role for us. We have some new additions to our midfield group planned for this year, some returning players, younger players and some guys that will look to add to their existing roles. The more flexibility, the better.

S: Given Melton South's move to the RDFL, do you believe this year's title will be the hardest to win in recent times given you have to play each team twice?

TS: They are all hard to win. I guess playing everyone twice evens up the draw. I anticipate this year’s premiership will be just as challenging as previous years. Exciting season ahead.

Melton 2026 BFNL Preview

With Round 1 fast approaching, Scoop has caught up with all ten senior footy coaches as they prepare for season 2026!

Following a heartbreaking preliminary final exit in season 2025, the Bloods are expected to be one of the big contenders once again this year.

Scoop: Not much went right for you in the back half of last season and you still went mighty close teaching a Grand Final. Is that a motivating factor for the group ahead of 2026 knowing you’re right in the mix?

Troy Scoble: You do get motivated year to year by the previous year’s success or failures to meet your goals. 2025 was quite unique, we faced challenges all year and still with a minute to go in a prelim had an opportunity to play in the grand final. Disappointed to not play in another GF, proud of the year we had and confident our program and finals record are strong.

S: You talk about the importance having a plan B - have we seen it yet? Will you have to go about it differently this campaign to get the results you want?

TS: We have rolled out plan A, B, C and D in the last two years. I think all clubs have a style of footy they wish to play but acknowledge this competition is so even and your style is challenged in game all game.  We have been working on our scenario planning, modes of footy we will play against certain teams in certain situations and what levers we pull when momentum shifts a certain way. You need to evolve your game style year in year out to keep improving.

S: Your defence went from conceding a ridiculous average of 42 points per game in your Premiership year of 2024 to 66 ppg last year. Anything to see here Scobes, or is it merely an inevitable adjustment and levelling out of the numbers?

TS: It’s a fair point and there was a shift in our ability to defend. Some of that was personal, we had four of our back 7 and three of our forward 6 out for the first seven weeks of the season and lost a bit of connection through our divisions. We were unable to defend as high as we would have liked, we tried to get a bit more aggressive in our ball movement also and got exposed defensively at times. It has definitely been a focus through the pre-season.

S: What’s the likelihood of Billy Crofts and Adam Kennedy playing a role this season?

TS: Billy was available to play finals last season pending Footscray’s performance. Fortunately for Billy he won a VFL grand final and the Bulldogs' best and fairest. We expect to see Billy earlier in the season then later in the season. Finals is dependent on the Bulldogs again. Adam we will definitely see throughout the year when fixtures align with Sydney and his Melbourne trips which is exciting for the club.

S: Tell us in a few words about the new arrivals at the Bloods..

TS: Riley Walker returns after a year off. Made an immediate impact as we expect with his speed competitiveness and kicking.

Caleb Burquest: young highly talented running player. Decision making and ball use a highlight through the preseason.

Mitch Brockwell: more experienced player, key defender, returns home after a few years at Diggers Rest. Tough uncompromising.

AREAS OF IMPROVEMENT

TS: Conversion (we hope), we had as many scoring shots as anyone last year but ranked 8th for conversion. Ball movement a preseason focus.

INS & OUTS

In: A. Kennedy (ex Melton junior/GWS AFL), C. Burquest (St Bernard’s VAFA), M. Brockwell (Diggers Rest), R. Walker (back from a year off).

Out: B. Souter (Melton South), B. Mawson (Melton South), J. Cooper (Melton South), L. Heaney (Springbank)

VFL AFFILIATED PLAYERS

VFL: Adrian Monitto (Williamstown) Billy Crofts (Footscray)

PRACTICE MATCH SCHEDULE

CLUB IMPROVERS TIP

TS: North Ballarat

FLAG TIP

Darley Devils

SCOOP SAYS

The challenge for coach Troy Scoble will be to recapture the ‘Brotherhood’ connection that led them to a 19-1 Premiership win in 2024.

Despite losing a few soldiers, the return of Riley Walker, Jaycob Hickey (ankle) and a free moving Jordy Cotter will only strengthen their credentials.

The club should hold no fears for healthy rivals Darley having won four of their last five meets.

It’s all ‘above the shoulders’ for mine that will determine the Bloods’ fate in 2026 - their best is certainly good enough with strong representation across all lines.

Projected finish: 2nd

Melton vs East Point - MATCH PREVIEW

    QUALIFYING FINAL - SATURDAY AUGUST 31ST - 2.15PM @ DARLEY PARK

    - BFNL MATCH OF THE ROUND LIVE VISION WITH FULL COMMENTARY 2PM VIA BFNL MATCH CENTRE -

Last time they met - Melton 78 def. by East Point 83 (MacPherson Park, Round 6 2024)

We've waited 105 days for this rematch, and it comes in the form of a mouthwatering qualifying final - can't wait!

Round 6 is a far cry from the hustle, bustle and pressure of a final but in fairness, May 18th went pretty close!

What an outstanding home and away season for these two, losing just three games between them.

The Kangas could find themselves a little stiff not to finish top with just the two losses but that is the current landscape when the Bloods are involved.

Despite finishing second, the Kangas have plenty of upside heading into this bout having beaten the Bloods the last two times including a semi final win last year.

While both of those wins came away from Eastern Oval, Darley Park looms as an undeniable variable for mine to overcome.

East Point have not won at Darley Park for 10 years, that worries me.

If this game were in Ballarat, I would be tipping the Kangas but something tells me the ground and conditions will suit Troy Scoble's planning - he knows the ground so well.

Call it due diligence ahead of time but I guarantee you - observations duly noted.

Even Joe Carmody, a longtime player in the BFNL could barely recall any success at the venue!

But if there was ever a group to break the run of outs for the Kangas at Darley Park, it's this one against the Bloods.

Melton are gettable - the Kangas’ best is arguably better. But can they produce in the white shorts against the season benchmark.

The Bloods, it seems, have been waiting for this day for a while now and I’m not talking weeks, rather 11 months for another crack at a flag that has previously gone awry.

At least Scoble conceded they weren't the best team in it last year, but something tells me that opinion has changed.

The buy-in from the Bloods group is palpable. While they gave every indication last week, they're gettable, so did East Point! Kudos to Ballarat.

Holistically, every bit of blood, sweat and tears shed to this point equate to an unmissable qualifying final, spruik as one for the ages.

As part of the editorial, I’m required to make a choice. I'm leaning to the Bloods but would not be surprised if the Kangas produced the goods following a timely reminder of their mortality last week.

    PLAYER WATCH

    Defenders
Melton: Adrian Monitto (#45), Riley Walker (#29) and Lachie Phillips (#9) are the genesis in transition for the Bloods. Monitto and Walker especially provide the spread, run, carry and distribution in the absence of Jordy Cotter (#4) and will stretch the ground, making it uncomfortable for the Kangas.

East Point: Jackson Merrett (#1) and Jacob Brown (#4) are the experience and cornerstone of the Kangas’ defence. Merrett ranks fourth for in the comp uncontested marks, fifth for marks and sixth for effective kicks and tenth for kicks. Merrett is the go-to distributor. Brown, not dissimilar to Merrett ranks third in the comp for effective kicks, fourteenth for kicks, fourth for marks AND intercept marks. What is also worthy of note is Brown ranks twenty-second in the comp for handball receives.

    Midfielders
Melton: Jaycob Hickey (#10) averages 27.6 disposals, ranks 9 in the comp for clearances and 11th for goal involvements while (#11) Jack Walker averages 26.6 disposals, ranks 8 for goal assists and 13th for centre clearances.

East PointMatty Johnston (#7) ranks third in the comp for disposals (34.1) and contested possessions. Johnston also features in the top 10 for a host of other KPIs and ranks elite in all areas when the Kangas have possession of the ball. Mikitja Rottumah-Onus (#2) ranks among the top 25 in the comp for clearances, contested possessions, handballs, hard ball gets, ground ball gets, goal assists and involvements.

    Forwards
Melton: Braedan Kight (#7) is the league’s leading goalkicker with 75. Ryan Carter (#23) is fifth on the goalkicking table with 41.

East Point: Bryson McDougall (#12) is second in the league for goals with 67. McDougall has taken more marks inside 50 than other player in the BFNL and ranks second for total contested marks. Strahan Robinson (#30) has 31 goals, ranks elite for contested marks and marks inside 50 (10th).

Netball Weekend Preview - Round 1, 2026

Following a Good Friday teaser, a full slate of Round 1 beckons with grand final rematches, local rivalries and action under lights!

  • Lake Wendouree

  • vs

  • Redan

SATURDAY APRIL 11TH - 2:30PM @ CE BROWN RESERVE

Round 1 A Grade netball kicks off with a highly anticipated clash between Lake Wendouree and Redan, with both sides looking to set the tone early in the 2026 season.

These two teams built a strong rivalry in 2025, with both encounters producing tight contests.

Redan got the upper hand in Round 9 with a narrow four-goal win, before Lake Wendouree responded in Round 17, turning the tables with a convincing nine-goal victory.

With honours split last season, there’s plenty on the line heading into their first meeting this year.

Both Clubs will showcase some fresh faces in 2026, adding an extra layer of intrigue to this matchup.

Lake Wendouree will look to their attacking combination of Addison Funke (GS) and Ebony Porter (GA) to provide scoreboard pressure, while Emma Hawker and Rosie Todd will be key through the midcourt.

Defensively, Audrey Domaille, Remi Hooper and Kate Drew will aim to limit Redan’s scoring opportunities.

Redan, however, boast a strong and dynamic lineup of their own.

Eva Manserra (GS) and Stella Kane (GA) will lead the charge in attack, supported by Stacey Matthews and Grace Manserra through the midcourt.

Their defensive end, featuring Caitlin Farr, Sienna Manserra and Erin Riley, will be crucial in applying pressure and generating turnover ball.

With both teams evenly matched and eager to start their season with a win, expect a fast-paced and competitive contest. Round 1 shapes as an early statement game for both Lake Wendouree and Redan.

  • Melton

  • Bacchus Marsh

SATURDAY APRIL 11TH - 2:30PM @ MACPHERSON PARK

A Grade action sees Melton take on Bacchus Marsh, with both sides entering the season with plenty to prove.

Melton begin a new chapter in 2026 under the guidance of Head Coach Brandon D’Monte.

After falling to Bacchus Marsh in both encounters last season (52–38 and 47–31), Melton will be eager to close the gap and show improvement in this opening round clash.

With several new additions to their lineup, there’s a renewed sense of energy and opportunity within the group.

Their Round 1 side features Hayley Masinalupe Tautasi (GS) and Tiarnah Lloyd-Roeby (GA) leading the attack, while Amelia Cini and Emily Jelesic will be key through the midcourt.

Defensively, Maya Eastwood, Felicia Toleafoa and Nadia Tupou will be tasked with applying pressure and generating turnover ball.

Bacchus Marsh, meanwhile, come into Round 1 with momentum already on their side after securing a win over East Point in the standalone Good Friday Round 0 fixture.

They will be looking to continue that form and build an early-season winning streak, naming an unchanged lineup.

Kimberly Philipps (GS) and Jasmine Paama (GA) will once again lead the scoring efforts, supported by Melissa Prismall and Eliza Moodie through the midcourt.

Defensively, Ella Logan, Georgia Shattock and Avana Hobson will look to restrict Melton’s attacking flow, with Remy Day and Jaimee Walsh providing options off the bench.

While Bacchus Marsh enter the contest as favourites based on recent form and results, Melton’s fresh lineup and new coaching direction make them an exciting prospect.

Expect Melton to come out with intent, while Bacchus Marsh will be focused on maintaining their strong start to the season.

  • North Ballarat

  • vs

  • Ballarat

SATURDAY APRIL 11TH - 2:30PM @ MARS STADIUM

Round 1 A Grade action sees North Ballarat take on Ballarat in what shapes as an intriguing season opener, particularly given their contrasting fortunes in 2025.

North Ballarat had the upper hand in both meetings last year, recording two dominant wins.

They opened their 2025 campaign against Ballarat with a commanding 73–34 victory in Round 1, before backing it up again in Round 11 with a 77–38 result.

Those performances will give North Ballarat plenty of confidence heading into this matchup.

However, Ballarat will be eager to turn the page in 2026, with a refreshed lineup bringing new energy and optimism to the group.

Their Round 1 side features Famke McCallum (GS) and Dakota Blade (GA) in the goal circle, with Ella Shannon, Xara Burge and Jacinta McKenzie forming the midcourt. Defensively, Eliza Burge, Ava Richardson and the bench options will be looking to apply strong pressure and limit North Ballarat’s scoring opportunities.

North Ballarat also enter the season with a new voice at the helm, welcoming Head Coach Maddie Fitzpatrick.

Their Round 1 lineup remains strong, with Maddy Selmon (GS) and Poppy Douglass (GA) leading the attack, while Georgia Bodey and Kelsie Rainbow provide drive through the midcourt.

Defenders Brydi Hutchinson, Milly Simpson and Maggie Smith will be key in maintaining their defensive strength, with Fitzpatrick also named on the bench.

While North Ballarat will start favourites based on last season’s results, Round 1 always brings fresh opportunity.

Ballarat will be keen to close the gap and make an early statement, while North Ballarat will be out to reinforce their standing as one of the competition’s benchmark teams.

SATURDAY APRIL 11TH - 2:30PM @ DARLEY PARK

MATCH OF THE ROUND - WATCH LIVE VIA BFNL.COM.AU

This Round 1 A Grade game will deliver an immediate blockbuster, with Darley and Sunbury going head-to-head in a 2025 Grand Final rematch.

It was Darley who claimed premiership glory last season, edging out Sunbury by five goals in a hard-fought decider.

Across the 2025 home and away season, the two sides shared the honours. Sunbury struck first with a dominant 60–39 win in their opening clash, before Darley responded in Round 10 with an impressive 11-goal victory.

With both teams having proven they can take control, this matchup promises another high-quality contest.

Both sides will be without some key players due to Netball Nationals commitments, however the depth across both lists ensures this will still be a strong, competitive showing.

Darley’s Round 1 lineup features a solid attacking combination in Sarah Mason (GS) and Akira McCormack (GA), with Lucy Taylor and Montanna Holmes driving through the midcourt.

Defensively, Jaimee Smith, Anna Lawley and Matilda Elliot will be tasked with limiting Sunbury’s scoring opportunities, while Shannon Blackman and Sarah Crowley provide depth from the bench.

Sunbury will counter with Caitlyn Hill (GS) and Chelsea Amore (GA) leading the attack, supported by Sarah Croft and Taylor Honey through the midcourt.

Their defensive end, featuring Emily Conn, Eliza Gollant and Elly Randall, will look to apply pressure and create turnover ball, with Emily Gollant, Ava Hellyer and Hollee Cootee offering options from the bench.

With recent history, premiership pride, and Round 1 momentum all on the line, expect a fierce and fast-paced contest.

  • Sebastopol

  • vs

  • East Point

SATURDAY APRIL 11TH - 4:30PM @ MARTY BUSCH RESERVE

Sebastopol and East Point round out the opening weekend of A Grade action, with both sides eager to make an early statement in 2026.

Their matchups in 2025 were evenly split. East Point claimed the first meeting; however Sebastopol responded strongly later in the season, securing a solid 47–35 win.

With both teams having tasted success against each other, this contest shapes as another tight battle.

Sebastopol head into Round 1 with a mix of familiar faces and fresh talent and will be looking to hit the ground running.

Their attacking end features Adut Manyiel (GS) and Laura Bell (GA), while Hannah Atkinson and Tahlia Watts will drive through the midcourt.

Defensively, Nikki Allen, Jami Luhrs and Alice Kain will play a crucial role in disrupting East Point’s flow, with Makayla Wright, Taylor Finch and Sienna Muir providing depth from the bench.

East Point come into the match off the back of a narrow loss to Bacchus Marsh in the standalone Round 0 Good Friday fixture.

While they showed strong passages of play, accuracy in front of goal will be an area of focus heading into this clash.

Their Round 1 lineup sees Keele Hillas (GS) and Jeremi Robinson (GA) combine in attack, supported by Bridey McElligott and Rhiannon White through the midcourt.

Defenders Isabella Stevens, Sarah Augustine and Stella Geljon will be key in applying pressure, with Lily McGuiness, Abby Kinnersly and Tess Geljon offering options off the bench.

With both teams capable of strong performances and keen to start their season on the right note, this shapes as a competitive and evenly matched contest to close out Round 1.

  • Redan

  • vs

  • Sunbury

SATURDAY APRIL 18TH - 2.30PM @ CITY OVAL

Redan and Sunbury will both be hungry for a response in Round 2, with each side coming off a loss in their opening matches of the 2026 season.

Sunbury receive a timely boost with several players returning after competing at Netball Nationals last weekend.

Their inclusion adds depth, experience and composure to an already talented lineup, and they will be eager to bounce back strongly.

Redan, however, will be just as determined to make a statement.

With an impressive and well-rounded squad, they will be looking to go toe-to-toe with Sunbury and prove they can match it with one of the competition’s benchmark sides.

After dropping both encounters to Sunbury in 2025, Redan have added motivation to shift the narrative this season.

  • East Point

  • vs

  • Darley

SATURDAY APRIL 18TH - 2.30PM @ EASTERN OVAL

East Point face a tough challenge in Round 2 as they come up against reigning premiers Darley in a must-watch clash.

It hasn’t been the start East Point were hoping for, dropping their opening two matches of the season.

However, they will be determined to respond this week, focusing on building connection across the court and finding consistency within their dynamic lineup.

With plenty of talent at their disposal, this shapes as an opportunity to reset and gain momentum.

Darley, on the other hand, have picked up right where they left off in 2025.

The reigning premiers opened their 2026 campaign with a comfortable win over Sunbury and will be looking to maintain that momentum.

Having defeated East Point in both meetings last season, they will take confidence into this matchup.

East Point’s attacking end will see Keele Hillas and Jeremi Robinson combine in the goal circle, while Bridey McElligott and Rhiannon White will be key in driving the ball through the midcourt.

Defensively, Isabella Stevens, Sarah Augustine and Stella Geljon will need to apply strong pressure to disrupt Darley’s slick ball movement.

Darley’s strength lies in their balance across the court.

Sarah Crowley and Akira McCormack form a potent shooting combination, with Lucy Taylor and Montana Holmes providing class and control through the midcourt.

Defensively, Jaimee Smith, Anna Lawley and Matilda Elliot will look to create turnovers and limit East Point’s scoring opportunities.

East Point will be eager to turn the tide after two early losses and last year’s results against Darley, but they’ll need to be at their very best to challenge a side that continues to set the benchmark.

  • Lake Wendouree

  • vs

  • Melton

SATURDAY APRIL 18TH - 2.30PM @ CE BROWN RESERVE

Lake Wendouree will look to continue their strong start to the 2026 season when they host Melton in Round 2, with both sides bringing contrasting momentum into the contest.

Lake Wendouree opened their season in dominant fashion, recording a very comfortable win and immediately stamping themselves as a side to watch early in 2026.

Confidence is high, and with a settled group across the court, they will be keen to build on that momentum.

Their recent history against Melton also works in their favour, having taken the points in both meetings in 2025.

Melton, however, return with a significantly strengthened lineup this week, with all players available and a clear hunger to respond after their opening round.

Expect a far more settled and competitive outfit as they look to test one of the competition’s in-form sides.

For Lake Wendouree, their attacking end will once again be led by Addison Funcke and Ebony Porter, who will look to capitalise on strong midcourt drive from Bella Clark and Sadie Cheesman.

In defence, Rosie Todd and Remi Hooper will be key in shutting down entries, with Kate Drew anchoring the goal circle and providing stability under pressure.

Melton’s goal circle will feature the dangerous combination of Hayley Masinalupe and Tiarna Lloyd, supported by Emily Jelesic and Amelia Cini through the midcourt, who will be responsible for controlling tempo and transition.

Defensively, Kiara Boyd and Felecia Resture will be tasked with disrupting Lake Wendouree’s flow, with Nadia Tupou providing a strong presence at goalkeeper.

With Lake Wendouree building momentum and Melton fielding a full-strength lineup for the first time this season, this shapes as a genuine test for both sides.

Netball Weekend Preview - Round 3, 2026

A huge weekend of Netball is in store with the chance continue early season form or buck the trend and cause an upset for some of the underdogs.

  • Ballarat

  • vs

  • Lake Wendouree

SATURDAY APRIL 25TH - 3:30PM @ ALFREDTON RESERVE

Ballarat and Lake Wendouree start off Round 3, with the Lakers entering as clear early favourites based on both recent history and current form.

In 2025, Lake Wendouree controlled both matchups between these sides, and they’ve carried that momentum straight into 2026 with two strong wins to open their campaign.

Ballarat, on the other hand, are still searching for their first points and will be eager to make a statement.

Ballarat’s lineup shows plenty of potential. Dakota Blade and Famke McCallum will lead the attack, while Ava Richardson and Xara Burge will be crucial in linking play through the midcourt.

Defensively, Abbie O’Brien, Eliza Burge and Jacinta McKenzie will need to apply consistent pressure, with Sam Bakes offering flexibility from the bench.

Lake Wendouree, however, look settled and dangerous across all thirds.

Addison Funcke and Ebony Porter provide a strong and reliable combination in the goal circle, while Emma Hawker and Sadie Cheesman drive the play with precision through the midcourt.

Defensively, Rosie Todd, Remi Hooper and Kate Drew form a cohesive unit that has already proven difficult to break down, with Bella Clark and Audrey Domaille adding depth and versatility.

For Ballarat to challenge, they’ll need to bring intensity from the first whistle and maintain it across all four quarters, particularly by disrupting Lake Wendouree’s smooth ball movement.

Lake Wendouree will be focused on continuing their strong start and reinforcing their status as one of the teams to beat in 2026.

While Ballarat’s hunger for a win could spark a lift in performance, Lake Wendouree’s consistency and early-season form make them the team to beat heading into this clash.

  • Sunbury

  • vs

  • Melton

SATURDAY APRIL 25TH - 4:30PM @ CLARKE OVAL

It's an intriguing clash at Clarke Oval as Sunbury take on Melton in what shapes as a test of whether early-season trends will hold firm.

These two sides met twice in 2025, with Sunbury asserting clear dominance on both occasions.

Fast forward to 2026 and the Lions have again shown they’ll be a force, splitting their opening two games with one win and one loss, while Melton are still searching for their first breakthrough after two tough outings.

The big question—can Melton flip the script, or will Sunbury continue their strong hold over this matchup?

Under Kim Bailey, Sunbury look well-balanced right across the court. Charlize Bellette and Lani Fauonuku provide a potent combination in the goal circle, with Bellette’s strong holding game complemented by Fauonuku’s movement and finishing ability.

Through the midcourt, Georgia Hellyer, Tayla Honey and Sarah Croft bring speed and connection, while defensively Eliza Gollant, Elly Randall and Abi Ingles offer plenty of rebound and pressure.

Melton, led by new coach Brandon D’Monte, are still building their identity in 2026. There’s no shortage of talent, with Hayley Masinalupe and Tiarnah Lloyd forming their shooting duo, supported by Amelia Cini and Narena Baker through the midcourt.

Defensively, Kiara Boyd, Felecia Resture and Nadia Tupou will need to be at their absolute best to slow Sunbury’s attacking flow, while Loia Tuafafo adds depth from the bench.

For Melton to challenge, they’ll need to find consistency across four quarters and limit Sunbury’s ability to transition cleanly.

For Sunbury, it’s about continuing their composure and capitalising on their strong connections across the court.

Based on recent history and early form, Sunbury head in as favourites—but if Melton can execute D’Monte’s game plan and lift their defensive intensity, this one could be far more competitive than previous meetings.

  • Darley

  • vs

  • Bacchus Marsh

SATURDAY APRIL 25TH - 4:30PM @ DARLEY PARK

The annual derby between Darley and Bacchus Marsh always brings extra intensity, and Round 3 is no exception with plenty on the line for both sides.

In 2025, Darley had the edge in both encounters, but this season shapes very differently.

Bacchus Marsh has come out firing in 2026 under head coach Nichole Gleeson, registering two wins and a very narrow loss to show they are well and truly in the mix.

They’ll head into this clash confident and ready to challenge a Darley outfit that has set the benchmark in recent years under Shannon Blackman’s strong leadership.

Darley’s strength lies in their cohesion and experience.

Olivia Cawthray and Akira McCormack combine well in the goal circle, offering a mix of strength and accuracy.

Through the midcourt, Lucy Taylor and Montana Holmes drive the play, with Jaimee Smith providing defensive pressure on the wing.

In defence, Anna Lawley and Matilda Elliot are proven performers, while Shannon Blackman adds valuable depth from the bench.

Bacchus Marsh, however, look more dynamic than ever in 2026.

Kimberly Philipps and Jasmine Paama will be key targets in the circle, while Melissa Prismall and Eliza Moodie bring energy and creativity through the midcourt.

Defensively, Ella Logan, Georgia Shattock and Avana Hobson form a solid unit capable of disrupting Darley’s flow, with Brianna De Haas ready to make an impact when called upon.

The key to this matchup will be whether Bacchus Marsh can convert their strong early-season form into a statement win against a side that has had their number in the past.

Darley will be relying on their composure and established connections, while Bacchus Marsh will look to bring intensity and belief to turn the tide.

Expect a fierce, physical contest with plenty of momentum swings. While Darley’s recent dominance can’t be ignored, Bacchus Marsh appears primed to push this one right to the wire—and potentially shake up the derby narrative in 2026.

  • Sebastopol

  • vs

  • Redan

SATURDAY APRIL 25TH - 4:30PM @ MARTY BUSCH RESERVE

Sebastopol host Redan in Round 3 in what shapes as a fascinating clash between early-season form and last year’s results.

In 2025, Redan had the clear upper hand, winning both encounters convincingly. However, 2026 has told a very different story so far. Sebastopol have come out firing with two strong wins and look full of confidence, while Redan are still searching for consistency after two losses to start their campaign.

Right now, the momentum sits firmly with the Burra. Sebastopol are showcasing strong team dynamics and cohesion across the court, making them deserved favourites heading into this matchup.

Makayla Wright and Laura Bell will lead the scoring end for Sebastopol, supported by a hardworking midcourt of Hannah Atkinson and Tahlia Watts. Nikki Allen adds defensive pressure through the wing, while Jami Lurs and Alice Kane anchor the defence, with Tayla Finch and Sienna Muir providing valuable impact off the bench.

Redan, however, will be desperate to respond.

Eva Manserra and Stella Kane form their shooting combination, with Stacey Matthews and Grace Manserra driving through the midcourt.

Caitlin Farr will be key in applying defensive pressure, while Ashlee Smith and Erin Riley hold down the defensive circle.

With Sienna Manserra, Abby Poulton and Kirsten Andrich available to rotate, Redan have depth—they just need to find the right mix.

The key to this game will be whether Sebastopol can maintain their composure and continue their strong ball movement under pressure, or if Redan can lift their intensity and rediscover the form that saw them dominate this matchup in 2025.

Based on current form, Sebastopol go in as deserved favourites. But with Redan eager to prove a point, expect a highly competitive contest with plenty of physicality and intent from both sides.

  • North Ballarat

  • vs

  • East Point

SUNDAY APRIL 26TH - 2:30PM @ MARS STADIUM

The final match of Round 3 sees North Ballarat host East Point in a clash that has historically leaned heavily one way, but with 2026 still in its early stages, both sides have plenty to play for.

North Ballarat has dominated this matchup across 2025 and has carried that momentum straight into this season, opening 2026 with two strong wins and looking every bit the well-drilled outfit once again.

East Point, meanwhile, are still searching for their first win of the year and will be desperate to turn their fortunes around.

The Roosters will head into this clash with an unchanged and settled line-up, a sign of their consistency and growing combinations.

Maddy Selmon and Poppy Douglass lead the shooting end, supported by Georgia Bodey and Kelsie Rainbow through the midcourt.

Defensively, Brydi Hutchinson, Milly Simpson and Maggie Smith provide structure and intercept potential, with Maddie Fitzpatrick adding impact off the bench.

East Point, however, have made a key change through their midcourt this week in search of a spark.

Keele Hillas and Jeremi Robinson will look to lead the scoring, with Rhiannon White and Abby Kinnersly steering the ball through the centre.

Bella Stevens and Stella Geljon anchor the defensive end, with Sarah Augustine in goal defence.

Bridey McElligott and Tess Geljon provide further options from the bench as they look to inject energy and flexibility.

The key question is whether that midcourt adjustment can shift the momentum against a North Ballarat side that is highly structured and in strong form.

The Roosters’ consistency and connection across all thirds have been a major strength, while East Point will be banking on their changes to unlock something different in transition.

North Ballarat go in as clear favourites based on form and history, but East Point will be hoping the tweak in their line-up can finally spark their first win of 2026.

Netball Weekend Preview - Round 4, 2026

Round 4 continues to shape the early narrative of the 2026 season, with several sides either reinforcing their standing or working to close the gap on last year’s finalists.

There’s a strong mix of proven combinations and developing line-ups, making each contest a tactical battle amongst teams.

  • Redan

  • vs

  • Ballarat

SATURDAY MAY 2ND - 2:30PM @ MARTY BUSCH RESERVE

A compelling contest between two sides working to build consistency, this matchup presents an opportunity for both teams to further establish their identity for the 2026 season.

Redan bring a strong core group with proven scoring capability and experience across the court. The combination of Eva Manserra and Stella Kane in the shooting circle provides a reliable scoring outlet, particularly when supplied with quality ball.

Through the midcourt, Stacey Matthews offers composure and leadership, capable of impacting both attacking flow and defensive pressure. In defence, Ashlee Smith and Erin Riley will be key in applying physical pressure and contesting strongly in the air.

Ballarat continues to show encouraging improvement, with their developing connections and growing confidence evident in recent performances. The combination of Famke McCallum and Dakota Blade in the shooting circle proved difficult to contain last round and will again be central to their scoring output.

  • Melton

  • vs

  • Darley

SATURDAY MAY 2ND - 2:30PM @ MACPHERSON PARK

Reigning premiers Darley head into Round 4 as the competition benchmark, continuing to showcase the composure, cohesion, and efficiency that underpinned their 2025 success. Their ability to control tempo through the midcourt and patiently build attacking phases allows them to consistently deliver high-percentage scoring opportunities.

Their defensive unit remains a standout, with Matilda Elliott and Anna Lawley forming a well-drilled combination that forces opposition into high-risk ball. This pressure is amplified by the relentless work rate of Jaimee Smith, who sets the tone defensively up the court.

Melton, meanwhile, continue to build under new leadership and are showing encouraging signs of development. Their defensive pairing of Felicia Resture and Nadia Tupou brings physicality and aerial strength, giving them the capacity to disrupt Darley’s rhythm if they can sustain pressure across all four quarters.

For Melton, the challenge will lie in converting defensive wins into composed attacking transitions and maintaining consistency against a highly structured Darley outfit

  • North Ballarat

  • Vs

  • Sunbury

SATURDAY MAY 2ND - 2:30PM @ MARS STADIUM

A headline fixture of Round 4, this shapes as a finals-quality contest between two genuine premiership contenders, both capable of setting the benchmark for the competition.

North Ballarat have built strong early-season consistency through a settled line-up, sharp midcourt connections, and an aggressive defensive mindset. Their ability to apply pressure across all thirds and force opposition into rushed decisions has been a defining feature.

The inclusion of Ella Hutchinson has strengthened their defensive end, adding intercept presence and aerial strength, while Brydi Hutchinson plays a crucial role through WD in disrupting opposition ball movement and limiting clean transition.

Offensively, North Ballarat’s spacing and timing allow for clean circle entry, giving their shooters every opportunity to convert from strong positions.

Sunbury, however, remain one of the competition’s most complete sides. Their composure with ball in hand, combined with an ability to dictate tempo and minimise error, makes them incredibly difficult to challenge across four quarters.

Through the midcourt, Tayla Honey and Georgia Hellyer provide an effective balance of speed and control, consistently delivering quality ball into the shooting circle. Their adaptability—whether maintaining width or playing direct—adds another layer to their attacking strength.

Defensively, Sunbury operate as a connected unit across the court, reading play exceptionally well and transitioning seamlessly from defence to attack, placing sustained pressure on opposition structures.

KEY MATCH-UP
• Centre court — Rainbow/Bodey vs Honey/Hellyer

WHAT TO WATCH
• Sunbury’s ability to control possession and minimise errors

  • Lake Wendouree

  • vs

  • SEBASTOPOL

SATURDAY MAY 2ND - 2:30PM @ CE BROWN RESERVE

This looms as one of the most intriguing contests of the round, with both Lake Wendouree and Sebastopol entering in strong early-season form and building confidence within their respective systems.

Lake Wendouree have proven they can match it with the competition’s best, combining a dynamic and creative attacking end with a disciplined defensive structure. The movement and synergy of Addison Funcke and Ebony Porter inside the circle allow the Lakers to vary their attacking options, particularly through second-phase play and their ability to reset under pressure.

Defensively, the Lakers are well organised, with Kate Drew anchoring strongly in the goal circle, supported by the athleticism of Remi Hooper and the tireless work rate of Rosie Todd. Their ability to generate turnover ball and convert efficiently will be central to their chances.

Sebastopol have quickly established themselves as one of the competition’s early improvers, playing with speed, confidence, and attacking intent. Their transition game has been a feature, moving the ball quickly and directly through the midcourt to maintain scoreboard pressure.

Hannah Atkinson continues to provide drive and creativity through WA, combining effectively with Tahlia Watts in C, whose work rate and timing to circle edge has been a key pillar of Sebastopol’s attacking flow. This connection allows their shooters to hold strong position and finish with confidence.

Defensively, Alice Kain leads a proactive unit that looks to dictate play, applying early pressure and forcing opposition attackers into less favourable positions.

KEY MATCH-UP
• Midcourt battle — Emma Hawker & Sadie Cheeseman vs Hannah Atkinson & Tahlia Watts

WHAT TO WATCH
• Sebastopol’s confidence and attacking speed

PREDICTION

Seeking Response: Sebastopol, Redan
Developing: Melton, East Point
Wildcard: Bacchus Marsh (post-bye)

  • Bacchus Marsh

  • vs

  • Redan

SATURDAY MAY 9TH - 2.30PM @ MADDINGLEY PARK

Momentum: Even — Opportunity game

This shapes as a crucial matchup for both sides as they look to build consistency and remain in touch with the top five.

Bacchus Marsh return from the bye refreshed and with an opportunity to reset their structures.

Their defensive circle combination of Avana Hobson and Georgia Shattock continues to develop, bringing relentless pressure and a willingness to shut down opposition opportunities.

At the other end, Kimberly Phillips and Jasmine Paama will look to continue their strong form after both shooting around 90% accuracy.

Redan will be eager to respond following their loss to Ballarat.

Stacey Matthews continues to provide leadership and composure through WA, while Erin Riley remains a key presence in defence.

However, sustaining consistency across four quarters will be critical. With youthful speed emerging throughout the side, balancing that with composure and experience may prove important against a refreshed Bacchus Marsh outfit.

Expect a physical and contested game, with both teams likely to prioritise defensive pressure and controlled ball movement.
