It's a big weekend of footy coming ahead of the King's Birthday bye round next week. Round 8 provides the perfect opportunity for teams to head into the break with their tails up and wins on the board.

It’s only the fourth meeting at Maddingley Park in seven seasons, but this Round 9 clash carries huge weight for both Sebastopol and Bacchus Marsh as the competition approaches the halfway mark.

Tony Lockyer’s Burra have been encouraging in the midfield numbers—matching the Cobras for disposals, clearances and contested possessions—but have converted that into just one win.

This weekend offers a prime chance to turn stats into wins.

For the Cobras, a finals berth remains close—their first since 2018—but they simply cannot afford slip-ups against fellow contenders.

Wins against teams like Sebastopol are the building blocks of a sustainable finals push.

The last meeting between these two at Macpherson Park saw Melton dismantle the Lions by 77 points.

But with Sunbury riding a six-game winning streak and in elite form, a repeat performance from the reigning premiers won’t come easy.

A key matchup to watch will be the forward shootout between Jake Sutton and Braeden Kight.

Sutton, the league’s equal leading goalkicker in 2025, is averaging nearly four majors a game and looms large as a match-winner.

Kight, on the other hand, was dominant last time these sides met—booting five goals alongside Jordan Kight’s four in a complete forward clinic.

Troy Scoble’s men continue to find plenty of entries inside 50, but their accuracy has left room for improvement.

And with six of their last 12 encounters decided by 21 points or less, punters can expect another tight battle this weekend.

The Roosters will take confidence from their recent home form against the Devils, winning the past three at Mars Stadium.

With finals now in a much more realistic view and just two points separating them from the top six, this clash looms large for North.

The return of Cam McCallum in the ruck adds crucial experience, especially against Darley’s rising star Lucas Impey, who is averaging 55 hit outs per game.

North’s ability to win clearances should only be strengthened by McCallum’s presence, while Denver Grainger-Barras’ move forward could be a game changer, with a five-goal haul last week showcasing his influence.

Ballarat have claimed five of the past six clashes, including their most recent meeting.

This one, though, feels like it could go either way—with both sides firmly in the hunt for a finals berth.

Despite sitting second last on the ladder, Redan are just a couple of wins outside the top six.

A victory here, followed by a winnable clash with Lake Wendouree next week, could see the Lions suddenly right back in contention.

Meanwhile, Ballarat are only four points clear of North Ballarat but sit behind them in percentage, making a win this weekend just as crucial to keep their finals hopes alive.

The Swans will be boosted by the return of midfielder Paddy Simpson, whose average of 20 disposals and six score involvements per game will be a huge benefit.

For Redan, the inclusion of Lachlan George in recent weeks has brought a much-needed dose of experience, helping steady a team hit hard by injury earlier in the season.

Last time these two met at Eastern Oval, East Point put on a clinic.

Replicating that performance could be essential, especially with a heavyweight clash against ladder-leaders Darley after the break.

Anything less than a big win here could see them lose grip on a top-three spot by the halfway point of the season.

For the Lakers, while the wins column remains empty, it’s all about development and setting measurable goals.

These matchups against elite opposition offer valuable benchmarks—and a chance for some of their consistent contributors to test themselves at the highest level.

Joel O’Connell will likely draw the challenge of limiting Micka Rotumah-Onus, who has been near unstoppable through the midfield.

To suggest both sides need a win is an understatement.

For the Lakers, Saturday will mark 400 days since their las win, albeit a 102-point routing of the Panthers who will hit 100 weeks since their last on field success, a six-point win over the Lakers in their corresponding Round 9 fixture way back in 2022.

For one relieved outfit, the run of outs ends this weekend.

With all respect to Travis Hodgson and the Panthers, they're not in the same conversation as the Lakers despite sharing the same 'zero win' season to date.

The Lakers can boast mini wins, equating to four winning quarters from their 32, the Panthers are 0/28.

While scoring and defending has been a struggle for both sides, it's the Lakers who hold the advantage averaging 21 points MORE per game.

There's a similar pattern on the defensive front with Lakers conceding 33 points on average LESS than the Panthers.

Here's hoping the BFNL's Match of the Round is full of goals and game defining moments - enough for one team at least to savour in celebration and song.

It's all about making the most of an opportunity that beckons for these two sides in front of a keen viewing audience. Given the current landscape, who knows when the next victory salute will come.

It felt all clubs welcomed the Kings Birthday break, but if there was one I had to nominate as a possible exception, it would most certainly be East Point.

Since the Kangas’ bye in Round 2 they've won six games on the trot inflicting Melton and Sunbury with their only losses on the way.

Over the period Joe Carmody's Kangas have averaged near 114 points per game, conceding just 50.5 (avg per game) in the process.

If Gary Learmonth's Redan were looking for flaws in the Kangas camp, maybe something as simple as a break in continuity for the Kangas could provide an edge, especially early.

If the Lions could in fact get the jump, momentum can do wonderous things, especially for a young group that has double figure representation from their Under 19 and Under 17 stocks.   

On the flipside I fear for a young Lions group the break has invigorated the Kangas even further.

Their best is very good.

We've known that at the coal face and forward of the ball for a while, but the assurance found now behind the ball in the name of Jacob Brown and Jackson Merrett gives a new look for the Kangas despite their familiarity and experience.

Bryson McDougall, Strahan Robinson and Jack Jeffrey make up just part of the problems that lie ahead for the Lions given the Johnston brothers, Mickitja Rottumah-Onus and Joe Dodd's form through the midfield.

Needless to add, all are goalkicking mids (27 goals combined).

Learmonth will look for further progress from his young group as another timely footy audit presents in the name of East Point.

Excited for the potential debut of star recruit Lachie Bond (foot) who has not been seen since his four goal highlights reel against Drysdale in a pre-season practice match.

Lachie McLean (knee) who hasn't played all season is also in the mix for a return in a possible double boost for the Lions.

If Chris Maple's young Swans have any aspirations toppling North Ballarat at Mars Stadium, a good start hitting the scoreboard will be paramount.

The hosts have won 21/25 games at the venue since Brendan McCartney took over in 2021.

Ironically Ballarat (2022) was one of those four sides over the journey to upset the narrative, but it will be a much younger Swans outfit endeavouring to upset the winning trend of the Roosters (at home) and the pattern of conviction that comes with it.

Just scoring against the miserly North Ballarat defence has been a struggle for all opponents at Mars Stadium.

Since the start of 2023 the Roosters are 10 wins, two losses, conceding an average just shy of 48 points per game.

Given the cooler conditions forecasted, expect goals, especially for the visitors to come at a premium.

Clearly an improvement on the Swans effort here last year will earmark the bare minimum of expectation, no doubt the experienced Maple won't be beaten on what he already learnt here last year.

The Swans did lead at quarter time on that occasion and were within four points at the half.

The old 'better for longer' adage could not have been more fitting in the aftermath as McCartney's army extended after the break booting seven goals to two.

In the here and now, can the Swans marking game unsettle North Ballarat who are so accountable behind the ball?

The Swans will want to ensure their link up by foot is in order to find a way through especially in the absence of Rhett Montgomery (SANFL).

The Swans are not without a prizefighter’s chance, but I expect the pressure from the hosts at the coalface to prove the overwhelming difference.

The Roosters still have a few important cogs to return - namely Jamie Quick and Simon McCartin. Their presence only enhances the Roosters 'warm favorites' tag.

The King’s Birthday break was timely for these two sides amid a climbing injury toll ahead of their Round 9 clash at the Clarke Oval.

While the Burras’ on field woes, largely beyond their control, has attracted varying degrees of scrutiny, Sunbury copped some misfortune of their own with injuries to Mitch Lewis, Jake Egan, Nathan Doyle and earlier, season ending ACL tear for Tom Scanlon.

Ben Cameron (Coburg) and Harry Minton-Connell (Williamstown) remain in the VFL.

The loss of personnel surely played a role in the Lions’ first loss of the season on the road against the Kangas in Round 8.

Needless to add, Matty White's group was gallant in defeat despite trailing at every change.

Conceding periods of four and five goals in succession really was the difference.

Just what resemblance of each side’s best 22 we see on Saturday will surely play its own part but given the depth of the Lions and season returns of the Burra to date on the win/loss front, it's hard to entertain a conversation in the 'upset' camp.

But that notion will account for very little to Burra leader Tony Lockyer who is fully aware of where his team is at.

You have to admire the popular veteran having made little reference to the changes in personnel, that has clearly impacted the recent perennial finalists.

Sebastopol will arrive in Sunbury with every intention of winning, despite its unlikelihood.

Darley coach Dan Jordan gave the Burra some encouragement after the Devils’ 19-point win in Round 8 suggesting Lockyer's group will test, if not upset a few sides on the way home.

For Matthew White's Sunbury, it will be all about maintaining their good habits that led them to a promising 6-1 start to the season ahead of a Round 10 blockbuster against Melton.

Special mention to Lions’ forward Mitch McLean who is having a breakout season. His 24 goals to date (comp rank #4) has been complemented with 20 forward 50 tackles (Comp rank #1).

Dennis Armfield's touring Cobras will have had a fortnight to identify and plan for their toughest assignment to date. So where do you start?

Sure, Braedan Kight's 41 goals (7 games) fits the 'concern' criteria.

The Bloods’ captain is averaging a goal every 3.5 disposals in 2024 which is truly remarkable for a 16 disposal player. The damage is not limited there either from the x-factor talent.

While Kight is shy of six feet in height, he leads the competition for marks inside 50 (5.1 avg per game), goal involvements (7.9) and ranks 6th for score involvements (9.9).

At the other end you have a dominant Bloods’ back six led by Jordy Cotter who ranks #1 at the club for kicks, efficiency by foot, marks, intercept marks and intercept possessions.

Only Sunbury's Tyson Lever has taken more intercept marks than Cotter. Keeping the ball away from him despite a clear message will be easier said than done.

The Cobras will need a 'spike' in most areas to compete against the relentless Bloods.

Jake Owen's importance is not capped by his contested marking ability alone (Comp rank #2). The star forward ranks #7 in the comp for both goal involvements (6.3 per game) and score involvements (9.6) - worthy of a bona fide match up from the Scoble camp.

Ruckman Luke Goetz leads the Cobras clearly for intercept marks ahead of defenders Jack Parente, Simon La Franchi and Collingwood VFL listed recruit Rye Penny.

Expect the Cobras, like all other BFNL sides to be stretched in the air and at ground level against the competition yardstick and be made to pay on the scoreboard for their inefficiencies.

With a grand final berth on the line, East Point and Darley went toe-to-toe into overtime at Marty Busch Reserve.

It was the Kangaroos who emerged victorious, advancing to their third grand final in five full seasons.

But as we approach the halfway mark of 2025, it’s the Devils who come in as favourites for this cracking Round 9 clash.

While the overall head-to-head between the two is relatively even, a strong trend has emerged — home ground dominance.

Since 2018, these clubs have played ten home-and-away fixtures against each other.

Only one of those games has been won by the away team, with Darley boasting a perfect 4-0 record at home and East Point 5-1 on their turf.

Statistically, the two sides are well matched, though Darley edge ahead slightly in most key areas.

Accuracy in front of goal has been a major weapon for the Devils, while East Point trail — coming off an 18.23 scoreline in Round 8.

That conversion rate must tighten if they want to get a win on the road.

The Roos will be boosted by the return of Matt Johnston and Joe Dodd — two crafty ball users through the midfield — while Darley welcome back the Adam Azzopardi.

Roos defenders Liam Howard and Sam Cue will need to rise to the occasion to stem the Devils’ forward 50 entries.

As with all clashes in Round 9, the Ballarat and Melton matchup highlights just how vital four points are at this point in the season.

For the Bloods, a win secures a top-two position at the halfway mark.

A loss, however, could see them slip as low as fourth in what’s shaping up to be one of the tightest ladders in recent memory.

The Swans currently sit six points clear of sixth-placed Redan, but with injuries piling up and the lowest percentage among the top eight, a loss here could make their second half of the season a serious uphill battle.

Melton has certainly had the upper hand in this rivalry in recent years, winning nine of the past ten encounters.

That said, these sides have only met twice at Alfredton Recreation Reserve since 2019 — with Ballarat winning in 2019 and Melton returning the favour in 2022.

If Ballarat wants to challenge the Bloods, they’ll need to capitalise on their inside 50 entries.

On average, Melton are +10 in that area — a stat that has helped them control games and build scoreboard pressure.

But if there's one area Troy Scoble’s group can target, it’s Melton’s conversion: the Bloods have recorded more points than goals this season, leaving the door ajar for opposition.

Ballarat will unveil an exciting debutant in 16-year-old Emerton Hooper.

His selection is a testament to the strength of the club’s development pathways and the trust they’re placing in their next generation.

Melton, meanwhile, remains largely unchanged, with the only notable omission being Ryan Carter, unavailable due to interstate commitments.

With opportunity knocking for both sides, it’s a massive test for Ballarat’s young and injury-hit outfit — and a chance for Melton to cement their premiership credentials on the road.

There’s plenty on the line in this clash — and not just the four points.

Sunbury sit fourth on the ladder heading into the halfway mark of the season. A win could see them jump into the top two, while a loss wouldn’t knock them out of the four, but it would make a top-three finish much tougher to lock in.

For Bacchus Marsh, a win keeps their finals hopes well and truly alive.

But depending on other Round 9 results, a loss could see them slip out of the six — and suddenly in need of a few upsets in the back half of the year.

Clarke Oval has long been a tough hunting ground for the Cobras, with just three wins there — 2015, 2018, and 2023.

History suggests they’ll need to be at their best to break through once again.

For that to happen, a strong first half is essential.

Sunbury have been the most damaging side offensively this season, leading the league in total scores — thanks largely to the forward trio of Jake Sutton, Daniel Johnston, and Jake Egan.

Slowing their influence will be critical, with Tarkyn Findlay likely handed a key shutdown role.

While Bacchus Marsh have consistently finished games strong, their third quarters have been their Achilles heel.

With the Lions’ ability to score quickly and in bursts, Dennis Armfield’s group will need a complete four-quarter performance to challenge them.

If the Cobras can bring their trademark tackling pressure and disrupt Sunbury’s quick ball movement, they’ll be in with a shot.

But if the Lions bring the same consistent brand they’ve shown so far in 2025, they’ll be hard to stop on home turf.

It’s essentially a must-win for both teams at Marty Busch this weekend.

With just two wins apiece so far, both Clint Proctor and Tony Lockyer would have hoped for more from the opening half of the season.

But despite slow starts, both sides remain in the hunt for finals — and this clash will go a long way to deciding who stays in the race.

Thanks to a stronger percentage, North Ballarat sits just two points outside the six.

A win here could see them leapfrog into a finals position by weekend’s end.

For the Burra, their Round 8 win over Bacchus Marsh has breathed new life into their campaign, and with the gap to sixth spot only four points, it’s games like these that become critical in the chase.

Since the beginning of 2019, Sebastopol has had the edge in this match-up, winning five of their last eight encounters.

They’ve only hosted the Roosters twice at Marty Busch Reserve in that period — both ending in wins for the home side.

The Roosters will be forced to shuffle the magnets with Cam McCallum sidelined through injury.

Expect Ryan Luke to rotate through the middle more frequently, with his support ruck work sure to test Burra big man Liam Stow.

With Lockyer back in the line-up for Sebastopol, centre bounce contests and stoppage clearances should tighten right up.

While neither side boasts a dominant goalkicker, both have benefitted from a healthy spread of contributors up forward.

That makes defensive organisation all the more important, both back six units will need to be switched on, covering all avenues to goal.

Expect intercept marking and team defence structures — like pressing high and zoning back — to be key for both outfits in what could be a low-scoring grind.

With finals on the line and momentum up for grabs, this one looms as a classic scrap between two sides with plenty to prove.

Wins have been hard to come by for both teams this season — both showing glimpses of well-executed, finals-worthy football, but neither able to convert consistently.

Redan has had the edge in recent history, winning four of their last five and six of their past nine encounters with the Lakers.

However, last season told a different story — each side claimed a narrow win on their home turf, proving there's not much separating them when they bring their best.

Injury has continued to plague the Lions, with coach Gary Learmonth digging deep into the club's youth stocks to fill key roles.

It's created opportunity but has also tested Redan’s depth week in and week out.

For Rohan Brown and the Lakers, success this season isn’t solely defined by wins — but on paper, this is one of their best chances to bank four points.

At close to full strength, and facing a depleted Redan outfit sitting just one rung above them on the ladder, Lake Wendouree will need to leave nothing in the tank.

Winning the clearances is step one, but for the Lakers, they simply need to generate more forward entries.

Angus Gove has done plenty of work rebounding out of the backline, but it’ll be the likes of Will Clark and Kynan Raven that need to impact the other end by delivering the ball inside 50 with purpose.

For the Lions, winning the contested footy will be crucial — an area where Jake Connolly and Brody Pope have led the charge this year.

Redan have managed to get the ball inside 50 consistently enough, but it’s conversion that’s let them down.

Accuracy in front of goal will be a major focus if they’re to take control of this one.

With both clubs desperate for a win, expect a spirited clash between two proud sides.

The first week of finals presents us with three blockbuster games all with their own intriguing storylines this coming weekend.

We've waited 105 days for this rematch, and it comes in the form of a mouthwatering qualifying final - can't wait!

Round 6 is a far cry from the hustle, bustle and pressure of a final but in fairness, May 18th went pretty close!

What an outstanding home and away season for these two, losing just three games between them.

The Kangas could find themselves a little stiff not to finish top with just the two losses but that is the current landscape when the Bloods are involved.

Despite finishing second, the Kangas have plenty of upside heading into this bout having beaten the Bloods the last two times including a semi final win last year.

While both of those wins came away from Eastern Oval, Darley Park looms as an undeniable variable for mine to overcome.

East Point have not won at Darley Park for 10 years, that worries me.

If this game were in Ballarat, I would be tipping the Kangas but something tells me the ground and conditions will suit Troy Scoble's planning - he knows the ground so well.

Call it due diligence ahead of time but I guarantee you - observations duly noted.

Even Joe Carmody, a longtime player in the BFNL could barely recall any success at the venue!

But if there was ever a group to break the run of outs for the Kangas at Darley Park, it's this one against the Bloods.

Melton are gettable - the Kangas’ best is arguably better. But can they produce in the white shorts against the season benchmark.

The Bloods, it seems, have been waiting for this day for a while now and I’m not talking weeks, rather 11 months for another crack at a flag that has previously gone awry.

At least Scoble conceded they weren't the best team in it last year, but something tells me that opinion has changed.

The buy-in from the Bloods group is palpable. While they gave every indication last week, they're gettable, so did East Point! Kudos to Ballarat.

Holistically, every bit of blood, sweat and tears shed to this point equate to an unmissable qualifying final, spruik as one for the ages.

As part of the editorial, I’m required to make a choice. I'm leaning to the Bloods but would not be surprised if the Kangas produced the goods following a timely reminder of their mortality last week.

PLAYER WATCH

Defenders
Melton: Adrian Monitto (#45), Riley Walker (#29) and Lachie Phillips (#9)are the genesis in transition for the Bloods. Monitto and Walker especially provide the spread, run, carry and distribution in the absence of Jordy Cotter (#4)and will stretch the ground, making it uncomfortable for the Kangas.

East Point: Jackson Merrett (#1) and Jacob Brown (#4)are the experience and cornerstone of the Kangas’ defence. Merrett ranks fourth for in the comp uncontested marks, fifth for marks and sixth for effective kicks and tenth for kicks. Merrett is the go-to distributor. Brown, not dissimilar to Merrett ranks third in the comp for effective kicks, fourteenth for kicks, fourth for marks AND intercept marks. What is also worthy of note is Brown ranks twenty-second in the comp for handball receives.  

Midfielders
Melton: Jaycob Hickey (#10)averages 27.6 disposals, ranks 9 in the comp for clearances and 11th for goal involvements while (#11) Jack Walkeraverages 26.6 disposals, ranks 8 for goal assists and 13th for centre clearances.

East Point: Matty Johnston (#7)ranks third in the comp for disposals (34.1) and contested possessions. Johnston also features in the top 10 for a host of other KPIs and ranks elite in all areas when the Kangas have possession of the ball. Mikitja Rottumah-Onus (#2)ranks among the top 25 in the comp for clearances, contested possessions, handballs, hard ball gets, ground ball gets, goal assists and involvements. 

Forwards
Melton: Braedan Kight (#7)is the league’s leading goalkicker with 75. Ryan Carter (#23)is fifth on the goalkicking table with 41.

East Point: Bryson McDougall (#12)is second in the league for goals with 67. McDougall has taken more marks inside 50 than other player in the BFNL and ranks second for total contested marks. Strahan Robinson (#30)has 31 goals, ranks elite for contested marks and marks inside 50 (10th).

Haven't the Swans raised a few eyebrows in the back half of the season, unbeaten since round 10 including a win over Sunbury!

A fourth placed finish for the Swans would have surprised even the most loyal of supporter with Melton, East Point and Darley the only teams finishing above them.

For the record Ballarat has played 7 games this year against top six opposition for two wins and a draw, averaging 54 points FOR and 90 points AGAINST with a poor percentage of 60.

Those numbers amount to very little in the here and now following a breakout win over East Point.

Let's just hope the emotional toll of last week’s feat doesn't drain the life out of this young group who find themselves without no ceiling on the 'possible'.

The competition did look up and take notice, you can take that to the bank.

In fact, none more so than Lions’ coach Matty White who said on ‘The Presser’ a month ago he was “happy not to be playing the Swans again,”.

Footy can be an unpredictable vehicle for planning.

Here we are week one of the finals and Sunbury find themselves up the highway for a rendezvous eliminator against the plucky Swans.

Sunbury have lost their last six games against top six opposition and will be challenged again in Ballarat albeit at Sebastopol.

Injuries I’m sure have derailed Matty White's season that started so promisingly.

The loss of key backs in the latter stages and the recent hamstring injury to midfielder Jake Egan hasn't made the assignment any easier.

For Ballarat aren't the same side they were 10 weeks ago.

Chris Maple's group are a bona fide threat to any oppo.

The group are healthy, in form and bat deep.

Tristan Maple, Lachie Dalgleish, Harry Butler, Will Liston, the Rinaldi brothers and Rhys Perry have all gone to another level impacting BFNL games while the staple core of Angus Bade, Marcus Powling and Andrew Hooper present their own set of challenges.

Apologies to the more than capable remainder.

While Sunbury are in with a real chance to progress, momentum for me is with the Swans.

Ballarat: Rhys Perry (#53) has proven to be solid key defender who ranks elite for intercept marks, contested marks, spoils and 1%ers while the experienced rebound and distribution of Lachie Dalgleish (#14)will be crucial for the Swans. Dalgleish averages 18 kicks from his 22 disposals @74% efficiency. Also ranks elite for marks, intercept marks and possessions, rebound 50s and spoils.

Sunbury: Tyson Lever (#4) ranks second in the comp for Intercept marks (4.9), third for marks (9.1), fourth for intercept possessions (10.3), fifth for spoils (4.1) and tenth for rebound 50s (5.5). 

Midfielders
Ballarat: Will Liston (#2)is a two-time club best and fairest winner who ranks elite for disposals (23.2), contested possessions (10.8), clearances (7.1) and Tackles (6.9 - comp rank #10). Tristan Maple (#7)shares his time between half back/mid and knows how to find the footy averaging 29.2 disposals @76% (comp rank #9) A predominant 'kick' (20/29) sees him an integral part of the Swans’ work between the arcs. Maple is also among the elite rankings for intercept possessions, intercept marks and rebound 50s. The Footscray VFL listed product ranks third in the comp for handball receives and fifth for effective kicks.

Sunbury: Josh Guthrie (#5)ranks elite in all categories with the ball - disposals 33.1 @76% efficiency (comp rank #3), clearances (7.4), Inside 50s (4), Marks (5.9), Goal and score involvements (4.4, 7.3). Guthrie ranks 1 in the comp for handballs (17.4) and 6 for ground ball gets 11.2.

Forwards
Ballarat: Andrew Hooper (#4)is the dangerous small forward with 23 goals from 14 games. Harry Butler (#25)has played 7 games this year for the Swans including six wins and a draw. The athletic key forward ranks elite for goal involvements (5.1) and score involvements (7.9) as well as contested marks and ranks 14th for goals (2.3)

Sunbury:Lead up forward Jake Sutton (#14)has kicked 64 goals (comp rank #3) while pressure forward Mitch McLean (#15)finished in 7th with a breakout 40 goal season. The tale of these two speaks for itself - both make up 46.4% of all Sunbury goals.

Ballarat

Darley will start warm favourites on their home deck when they face North Ballarat on Sunday.

Managed trio Matthew Brett, Luther Baker and Matt Denham will return for the Devils who are beginning to resemble something like their best 22 at the right time of the season.

The journey hasn't been smooth sailing for the Roosters either, with a host of key players absent for some, if not all, second half of the season.

While the latest setback, a hamstring injury to Simon McCartin in Round 17 will sideline him for another week, the Roosters’ chances look set for a boost if Riley Polkinghorne (ankle -Round 10) and Ryan Hobbs (hamstring – Round 14) are made available.     

The Roosters’ defence will struggle to match the Devils’ height and aerial presence forward as Brady Wright, Billy Myers and Will Johnson look to capitalise.

Only Noah Cockerill and Liam Deering from the Roosters’ last hit-out in Round 17 resemble any suitable, go-to option.

The fitness of Ryan Hobbs will be crucial to their chances - surely, he's ready to go but will be in need of the run.

The midfield battle is always highly competitive.

The Devils’ combo of Brett Bewley, Luther Baker and Matty Denham is as good as any in the BFNL and will ask questions of a less experienced midfield who know how to find the footy.

Just what advantage the Roosters’ mids can get at the feet of big man Cam McCallum will tell its own story in the aftermath.

Expectations on Polkinghorne in the event of a return will be measured.

The Devils’ defence will need to be on their mettle holding out Roosters’ trio Joel Freeman, Ned Nash and Hugh Trigg.

What is brought to ground will surely open the door for a few speedy Roosters to pounce, removing much of the reliance on Freeman, who is responsible for 45% of North Ballarat's goals in their last four games (18/40).   

While windy, difficult conditions are forecast you can be guaranteed this game will be fought tooth and nail on the inside with very little on offer for the feint hearted.

I expect the Devils to progress with too much firepower for the Roosters who remain essentially in the 'undermanned' space.

Week 1 Finals Football Preview with Scoop

The 2025 BFNL finals series kicks of with a bang as our teams prepare themselves for one of the most closely contested post seasons in recent history.

While the Devils will start warm favourites on their home deck, a Wintery forecast for Saturday's qualifying final will give the visiting Kangas’ chances a timely boost as they endeavour to marshal the troops after an injury marred preparation. 

Up to seven of the nine crucial Kangas that missed their encouraging 12-point loss to the Devils on August 16th are expected to play, confirming there is a bit to play out here despite the minor premiers’ 17-game winning streak.

Conditions should suit the contested nature of the Kangas’ game and possibly reduce the maximum 'spread' damage of star Devils’ mid combo in Brett Bewley and Nick Hind.

Kangas mid and clearance beast Mickitja Rotumah-Onus will thrive in the event of a slow deck with an expected spike in stoppage play while the unenviable task for Liam Canny, a projected run with Brett Bewley role, will be tempered to the 'humanly possible'.    

Looking forward to the front half, 'bang for buck' tussle with Will Johnson (59 goals) and Mickey Edwards (28) for the Devils at one end and the three-pronged Kangas attack of Jacob Brown (47), Bryson McDougall (32, 12 games) and newcomer Jarrod Joyce (11, 6) at the other.

Just who benefits from a potential mouth-watering supply of inside 50s will go a long way deciding this game.

Enter the unheralded defenders.

Will Billy Myers go to Brown? The versatile defender kept Brown goalless for two and a half quarters before his move into the ruck in Round 17.

Brown went onto kick 2.4 with six shots on goal as a timely reminder of his capabilities, not mentioning his four goals per game average over the last six weeks, primarily, in the absence of McDougall.

Werribee VFL listed talent and rebound defender Mace Cousins will aid the cause behind the ball for the Devils alongside elite distributors Myers and Matthew Brett.

Kangas’ coach Joe Carmody will need to be agile with his intent containing Johnston and Edwards, I’m not sure they're 100% convinced of the right way to go on exposed form.

What we do know however, is Jackson Merrett looms the key distributor for the Kangas on the back of his 40+ disposal game - more than half uncontested.

The weight Jordan puts on Merrett’s output It will be a point of interest.

On spec, the Kangas have a handful of key players, either first or second up, having missed a month of footy for an assignment against a hardened Devils outfit who have been prepped to the minute and itching to leave the waiting room for their best flag tilt since 2023.

Darley: Billy Myers (#10) -averages 27 disposals, 17 effective kicks (comp rank 1st) and 8.2 marks (2nd).

East Point: Jordy Johnston (#11)- missed their previous meet in Round 17. Been named the Kangas’ best in seven of last nine games and second best the other two. Averaging 150 ranking points (comp rank 3rd), 28 disposals (13th) including 21 kicks (5th), 8 marks (5th), 8 score involvements (7th), and 6 inside 50s (7th). Darley

Sunbury will ask questions of a young and exuberant Ballarat outfit who pinched the final spot in the six, having come from as low as eighth in the final round of the home and away season.

The test will come early for Ash Baker's Swans on a relatively firm deck expected at Maddingley Park, despite the forecast of rain.

The Swans have been caught napping in first quarters in 2025 with only the Lake Wendouree ranking below them, while the Lions have bettered all bar Darley and East Point with their returns.

Lions pair Jake Sutton (68 goals) and Daniel Johnston (37 goals) will stretch an inexperienced Swans back half, without certain 1v1s will be enough for Baker to settle.

Johnston missed their last meeting when the Lions won narrowly by 9 points at the Clarke Oval and poses the obvious threat for greater separation.

Expect a team defence approach from the Swans, not bound in isolation to the back six or seven but a midfield accountable without the ball to deny freewheeling Sunbury trio Jake Egan, Harry Power and Ben Cameron pressure-free entries.

Recent history says the Swans will get their chance, given the two sides have split their last 10 meets with five wins apiece.

There is plenty to like about the growing band of accumulators and impact at the Swans - Tristan Maple, the Rinaldi brothers, Wyatt Squires and Fraser Perkins will lead the offensive on the ground and Harry Butler and Jack O'Brien in the air.

The core group of ball winners will need a day out on the efficiency front against a very healthy Sunbury outfit, who are peaking at the right time on the back of a 60-point thrashing of reigning premiers Melton.    

While we speculate reservation, wants, needs, if, what’s and maybes, the Swans will not fear Sunbury having won two of their last four meets, including a two-point Elimination Final triumph last year.

When you include two recent wins for the Swans at Maddingley Park (v Bacchus Marsh) from as many visits, the outlook is positive despite the unavoidable underdog tag.

The dangerous Lions have proven to have a match winning quarter in them most weeks.

With a seven-goals-or-more quarter notched under their belts against Darley, East Point and Melton - not to mention a 10 goal third term against the Swans in Round 4, it's hard to deny the best of Matty White's pride is very good.      

Sunbury's depth should prove too much for the bevy even though that theory has proven otherwise on two of the last four occasions.

Reigning premiers Melton will endeavour to put an underwhelming back half of the home and away season behind them and pivot into the present when they take on Bacchus Marsh in Sunday's Elimination Final at Eastern Oval.

Though the prospect of a Cobras upset is very real.

The vibe at Bacchus Marsh under Dennis Armfield has not been higher since their premiership year of 2016 as they embark on a final’s series with all three teams in the mix.

On the contrary, the Bloods have fallen short on expectation and are in need of a major boost both physically and mentally.

The Bloods’ 60-point loss to Sunbury in Round 18 lays testament to the claim.

Bloods’ mentor Troy Scoble is an impressive individual, shrewd leader and premiership coach.

Not even he could have planned for the horror run of injury and unavailability his club has had to endure but he will need to find a way to flip the narrative - and fast!

While all coaches do their best to manage the ups and downs, it's over to the players on Sunday to mount an emphatic response to the messaging.

While the Bloods have just two wins and a draw from their last seven games, the Cobras are just marginally ahead with three wins and will need to find an edge of their own if they're to overcome the perennial finalists.

However, the Cobras will have taken plenty of confidence from their drought breaking win over the Bloods earlier this month without key pillars Jake Owen and Will Lalor.

Owen's return last week was something to behold with his six goals, but don't underestimate the value of Lalor and what he brings in the form of a matchup with Liam or Ryan Carter, who too missed the Round 14 meet.

Liam (30 goals) in particular, is the barometer, with the proven match-winner playing every game thus far.

It's worth noting, in the Bloods’ seven games they missed out on the premiership points in 2025, Carter has been held to seven goals in total.  

The Bloods have enviable experience, ability and trust in their leaders to negotiate a sixth successive finals campaign off on the right foot.

What stands in their way is an eclectic mix of wisdom and youth starved of finals action, until now.

Can the likes of Cobras’ quartet Luke Goetz, Jake McCreery, Jamie Fulton and Owen lead the collective, and draw the best out of a promising band of next gen finals debutants?

I'm not sure Eastern Oval helps the Cobras cause, it's going to be a slow deck, heavy ball and likely to play into the Bloods hands who are confronted with their season mortality for the first time in a longtime. 

ONES TO WATCH

Defenders

Melton: Jordyn Cotter (#4), Harrison Handley (#5), Lachlan Watkins (#8), Lachlan Phillips (#9) and Adrian Monitto (#4) -highly talented quintet who have been the Bloods’ trademark model in transition. 

Bacchus Marsh: Rye Penny (#8) -has a leap of the gods, if he takes a hanger early look out - it gives the Cobras a boost. Had arguably his best game in his two seasons last week. Must back it up given his importance to the back 6/7 and the potency of the opposition around goal, Will Lalor (#15) -timely return after frustrating run with injury. Key back - will get one of the Carters. Big responsibility on young shoulders but up to the task.

Midfielders

Melton: Jack Walker (#11)- classic accumulator, two-way runner, never stops trying, loves the short hit-up and overlap run in transition. Kyle Borg (#16)– 22 goals, star x-factor qualities, speed to burn, excellent both sides, crucial to Bloods fortunes, will have his moments - just how many?

Bacchus Marsh: Luke Goetz (#33) -league’s premier hit-out ruckman - a spike in hits to advantage will only aid the cause, Jake McCreery (#20)– 29 goals,exciting goalkicking mid, explosive with his tackling pressure, Jamie Fulton (#38)- big bodied mid, thumping left foot, played an integral role in the Cobras’ return to finals.

Forwards

Matchwinner, guaranteed to be prepared for his next opponent before they even know they have the job! Smart player who earns his rewards. Liam Carter (#18) -30 goals and Ryan Carter (#23) - 9 goals in 9 games,dangerous premiership forward pairing who cover the ground, support separation, excellent overhead and trusting on goal.

Bacchus Marsh: Jake Owen (#11) - 61 goals from 14 games (comp rank 2nd) -genuine star of the competition - leadership qualities and proven courage – is the Cobras’ most important player. Josh Huxtable (#4) - 25 goals (comp rank 19th),arguably the Cobras cleanest ball user - while a finals debut is the reality, the stage looks perfect for a player with his scope. Was Best on Ground for the BFNL Interleague match versus Hampden League in June.

FOR THE RECORD

• Melton has won nine of their last 10 meetings with Bacchus Marsh.
• The two previous finals meets between these sides were the 1998 and 1999 preliminary finals.

Buckle in for another mesmerising weekend of finals footy coming up with a Grand Final spot on the line and an all-or-nothing clash at City Oval.

If North Ballarat have any reservations about travelling to Darley to take on the Devils, adopt the glass half full approach knowing a 10-win season (4th) has eventuated with a double chance and two opportunities to book a place into the BFNL Grand Final at home on Mars Stadium.

So enough of the byplay, time to focus on two of the form teams of the competition.

The two sides share a win and a loss from their earlier meetings in 2023. August 5^th, their most recent, where the Devils took care of an undermanned Roosters outfit by 34 points.

On that particular day the Roosters were without Jamie Quick, Jack Riding, Harry Loader, Ryan Hobbs and Reggie Palmer. Saturday will unveil arguably Brendan McCartney's best 22 to greet the paddock this year.

Macca's crew arrives with seven wins from their last 10 games but their one win (over Darley) from five games involving the remaining three sides alive in the BFNL race is cause for concern.

Class will not be a problem for the Roosters who are likely to see Sam Glover (Collingwood VFL) and Brock Leonard return from their 17-point win over Redan in the Elimination Final at the expense of veteran Clay Jenkins (knee) and one other (unlucky).

For the record Glover, Quick and Riding have only featured twice in the same team this year for a win and a loss.

Quick, among a handful of Roosters, looks a priority concern for Dan Jordan's Devils given the illusive forward is yet to be held goalless at BFNL level this year.

Throw Stewart Crameri, big man Cal McCullum, Riley Polkinghorne, Tom Bromley Lynch and key posts Hobbs, Harry Loader and Isaac Lovvison into the mix and it's quite easy to make a case for North Ballarat.

Now Darley.

Their obvious toped talent led by Brett Bewley and Billy Myers are in form. The second tier who would welcome being acknowledged as such is growing in numbers by the week as more and more Devils put their hand up to be a part of something special. Dan Jordan's men have won their last eight games on the trot including wins over Melton (twice), North Ballarat and Sebastopol.

While the frugal, well organised nature of the Roosters defence has been broadly acknowledged, the Devils’ defence are sneaking under the radar averaging just 52 points against for their last eight games compared to North Ballarat's 60.5.

There is an advantage to the Devils for scoring (94 average points per game) over the period (Melton South game removed) compared to North Ballarat's 72 avg ppg.

BUT, when taken into account the likely changes ahead of Saturday, you'll find there's little between the two sides - on paper anyway.

Scoop’s tip: Darley

Reigning premiers Melton will have to take the long road if it's to keep their back-to-back flag chances alive with a win over East Point in Sunday's do-or-die First Semi Final at City Oval.

Aaron Tymms, in his last year at the helm of the Bloods, will aim to keep their undefeated season record against all bar Darley alive, hoping to shut out Jackson Merrett's young group early.

The Kangas have answered the call in recent weeks to keep their premiership chances alive with season saving wins over North Ballarat (Rd18) and Sebastopol last week.

And getting it done without their star playmaker Jordy Johnston against Sebastopol with a broken thumb has to be commended.

Their options forward will give the underdog Kangas enough confidence to go toe-to-toe with the Bloods on the scoring front, matching the reigning premiers with eight players inside the top 50 BFNL goalkickers for the season.

Just who can win the midfield battle and provide the greatest number of opportunities will go a long way to validate the result.

The Bloods will look to correct on its failings to capitalise with the aerial dominance around stoppage of ruckman Ben Archard.

For all of the Essendon VFL listed bagman’s returns last week (+88 in the hitouts), the Bloods’ midfield was soundly beaten equating to a landslide inside 50s deficit against the Devils (41-70).

Jackson Merrett will no doubt look to the replay using the Devils’ returns as a blueprint for his side getting it done.

If JJ can make it back, he, Matty Johnston and Joe Dodd are more than capable of matching it with Bloods trio Jono O'Brien, Jack Walker and Lachie Watkins.

The last time these two sides met in Ballarat, albeit on Eastern Oval, the Kangas fell just eight points shy in their Round 7 meet.

While the Kangas led at half time, it was a five-goals-to-two third term that swung momentum back in the Bloods’ favour.

Beating the Bloods is all about playing the minutes, and those minutes well. A lapse as small as the Kangas’ third quarter doings in Round 7 is all that it will take for the Bloods to progress into a preliminary final.

Last week's loss for the Bloods was another reminder they need to find another gear, for the now is shy of their best.

Time to stand up with an emphatic response, call it a rare ‘backs to the wall challenge’ as the no fear Kangas will fancy their own chances despite a third week in a row as pronounced underdogs.

And then there were four. Grand final and prelim spots are on the line this weekend as we enter the second week of finals action.

Keen rivals Melton and Darley meet on Saturday to earn their place in the 2024 McDonald’s BFNL Grand Final.

Forget all the hoo-ha surrounding the venue, the Devils have beaten the Bloods just once on Darley Park in seven years.

The Bloods are a better kicking team on the whole and should relish another opportunity to expose the Devils with their spread as they did in their 67-point demolition job back in Round 7.

Saturday's assignment on the big stage will be a tough ask for Dan Jordan's Devils as the Bloods look to peak after a couple of weeks against top three opposition.

If it's any consolation for Jordan, no team in the BFNL has won three in a row against the Devils over his three-year tenure.

Clutching at straws, I know, but the loyal and faithful will take what they can to build a case.

The Bloods will start deserving favourites given their one loss season and unbeaten run of 12 games, dating back 112 days to Round 6.

Troy Scoble has done a fantastic job in his first season in charge, with the Bloods highly fancied taking out the premiership title by a host of rival coaches - most of whom have been on the wrong end of a Melton thrashing.

However, despite the Bloods near faultless campaign, they do look gettable if the last fortnight is any indication.

Sure, conditions made it difficult to replicate world beaters, but the quarters won were split 4-4 with the Devils and the Kangas.

How Jordan goes about winning the disposal and clearance count will tell its own story in the aftermath, a proven recipe for success in the Bloods’ previous two losses against East Point (Round 6) and Darley (2023 Qualifying Final).

Much of the Devils’ fortunes will rest on the back of their highly talented midfield - their ball use out of clearance and their ability to deny the Bloods an inside 50 count shy of 50.

Comparatively speaking, the numbers in isolation suggest there's not a great deal between the two, giving every indication the result may come down to a battle above the shoulders - who is prepared to work the hardest, execute the basic fundamentals under finals pressure, and have the genuine BELIEF to win a game of significant importance against quality opposition.

Have to lean to the Bloods until proven otherwise in a tight one.

PLAYER WATCH

Defenders
Melton: Adrian Monitto (#45), Riley Walker (#28) and Lachie Phillips (#9)are the genesis in transition for the Bloods. Monitto and Walker especially provide the spread, run, carry and distribution in the absence of Jordy Cotter (#4)and will stretch the ground, making it uncomfortable for the Devils.

Darley: Matthew Brett (#11) -elite for disposals (22.4) and intercept possessions (10.5)

Midfielders
Melton: Jaycob Hickey (#10)averages 27.2 disposals, ranks ninth in the comp for clearances and tenth for goal involvements while Jack Walker (#11)averages 25.9 disposals, ranks 13th for goal assists and 16th for centre clearances.

Darley: Brett Bewley (#2)ranks first in the comp for disposals (39.9) and clearances (10.5), while partner in crime Luther Baker (#7)is rated elite for disposals (25.2), ranks top 10 in the comp for centre clearances, contested possessions, and ground ball gets. 

Forwards
Melton: Braedan Kight (#7)is the league’s leading goalkicker with 76. Ryan Carter (#23)is fifth on the goalkicking table with 41.

Darley: Brady Wright (#15)ranks eight in the comp for contested marks (2.7) and 11th for Marks I50 (2.7) while Will Johnson (#22)as a medium sized, can play tall. Has kicked 24 goals from 12 games.

A spot in the preliminary final beckons for the winner of this matchup between once 'giant killers' East Point and once 'under the radar' Ballarat.

Strangely, the Kangas have lost their last two while the Swans remain unbeaten since Round 10, removing any thoughts of presumed certainty finding a winner.

Joe Carmody's predominately young group have been up for a while and would surely be feeling the effects of a long season having played just 32 players for the season, essentially four less than the Swans, six less of the Devils and seven less of the Bloods.

The watch on Jackson Merrett who left the field in discomfort for a period last week will be a 'watch this space'.

His kicking has been a feature all year, and his inability to take kick-ins late last week in a tight game is a cause for concern.

The Swans come from behind win against Sunbury last week was the topic of conversation as the competition and even the Ballarat Football Netball Club came to terms of what had transpired.

It's been a whirlwind back half season for Chris Maple's Swans and it's about to get serious.

Asleep at the wheel last week for the opening half won't cut it this week against the strength of the Kangas.

What the Swans can take into the game is a spike in self-belief they can win from anywhere and against Sunday's opponent given their recent success over East Point in Round 18.

For the Swans to win, favourable numbers in areas similar to their round 18 meet must be replicated.

Namely disposals (+49), intercept possessions (+15), marks (+54), uncontested marks (+62), tackles (+12).

Winning the clearance and ground ball contest will be a tough ask, a KPI beyond the Swans in Round 18 despite the morale boosting win.

East Point haven't done much wrong, having played for little stakes against the Swans at their last meet and a forgive run loss in tough conditions against the Bloods in the qualifying final.

Somehow, it's now do-or-die and season on the line stuff.

Something tells me the Kangas have scope for more say in what's to play out in season 2024, they're truly in the mix and would start equal favourites in Ballarat if a preliminary final berth was achieved.

Got to get it done against the fearless Swans who arrive full of momentum and without fear.

The Kangas will be tested but should get the job done... shouldn't they?

Defenders
East Point: Jackson Merrett (#1) and Jacob Brown (#4)are the experience and cornerstone of the Kangas’ defence. Merrett ranks second in the comp for uncontested marks, seventh for avg marks and ninth for kicks and effective kicks. Merrett is the go-to distributor. Brown, not dissimilar to Merrett ranks fourth in the comp for effective kicks, 15th for kicks, fifth for marks and seventh for intercept marks. What is also worthy of note is Brown ranks 23rd in the comp for handball receives.  

Ballarat: Rhys Perry (#53)is a solid key defender who ranks elite for intercept marks, contested marks, spoils and 1%s while the experienced rebound and distribution of Lachie Dalgleish (#14)will be crucial for the Swans. Dalgleish averages 18 kicks from his 22 disposals @74% efficiency. Also ranks elite for marks, intercept marks and possessions, rebound 50s and spoils.

Midfielders
East Point: Matty Johnston (#7)ranks third in the comp for avg disposals (33.9) and contested possessions. Johnston also features in the top 10 for a host of other KPIs and ranks elite in all areas when the Kangas have possession of the ball. Mikitja Rottumah-Onus (#2)ranks among the top 25 in the comp for clearances, contested possessions, hard ball gets, ground ball, goal assists/involvements and handballs. 

Ballarat: Will Liston (#2)is a two-time Club B&F winner who ranks elite for disposals (23), contested possessions (10.8), clearances (7.1), Tackles (6.9 - comp rank tenth). Tristan Maple (#7)shares his time between half back/mid and knows how to find the footy averaging 30.2 disposals @74% (comp rank ninth). A predominant 'kick'(20.6/9.6) sees him an integral part of the Swans work between the arcs. Maple is also among the elite rankings for intercept possessions and intercept marks and rebound 50s. The Footscray VFL listed product ranks fourth in the comp for handball receives and fifth for effective kicks.

Forwards
East Point: Bryson McDougall (#12)is second in the league for goals with 70. McDougall has taken more marks I50 than other player in the BFNL and ranks second for total contested marks. Strahan Robinson (#30)has 31 goals, ranks elite for contested marks and marks I50 (9th).

Ballarat: Andrew Hooper (#4)is a dangerous small forward with 25 goals from 15 games. Harry Butler (#25)has played 8 games this year for the Swans including seven wins and a draw. The athletic key forward ranks elite for goal (4.9) and score involvements (7.6) as well as contested marks while averaging two goals per game of his own.

Next up in Scoop's club-by-club predictions is Melton. The Bloods will be feeling the loss of big forward Mark Orr, but with a more settled pre-season and an injury-free start, coach Aaron Tymms is hopeful the club can take the next step in 2021.

Scoop’s 2021 prediction: 4th - 8th

EXPECT Melton to tinker with their forward line set up in 2021 in the absence of key big man Mark Orr who has left the club who left the club due to travel.

While Orr's return on the goal front was modest (19) last season in 2019, the structural advantages and flexibility he brings to the line-up will be sorely missed. Not only will the Bloods look a little smaller going forward they will also need to find a pinch-hitting relief option for Ben Archard in the ruck.

Bloods coach Aaron Tymms acknowledged replacing the club’s 2019 Runner Up Best and Fairest won't be easy. You can also add gun midfielders Shaun Campbell (to Parkside) and more recently Connor Griffiths (to Yarrawonga) into the mix of star exits.

"That trio especially will leave a big hole that's for sure," he said.

"We've been throwing the magnets around a bit over pre-season, trying to find the right mix forward with Orry leaving, and [now] how the midfield group will look for us come Round One.

"I expect we'll see players in different roles this year. We could play Ryan Carter forward, but in my opinion, he's one of the best shut down defenders in the comp."

Bloods fans will expect to be a part of the business end conversation for a third successive season after rising to prominence in 2018 with a runners-up result that exceeded expectation. The writing was on the wall for another tilt at a flag in 2019, but their form by their own standards was patchy at best before falling short to Sebastopol in the penultimate week of finals.

Tymms hopes an uninterrupted pre-season and injury-free list will hold them in good stead early for a tough opening month of footy.

"In 2019, we couldn't even get on our ground until Round One, which wasn't ideal," he said.

"And with Archard and Denham going down early with hamstring injuries, it had us on the back foot a little."

While the Bloods had just five players play every game in 2019, they were matched only by East Point for the fewest number of players used (34), mounting the argument that attrition rate is one thing, and who gets injured is another.

Tymms is hopeful there is enough improvement within the club to take the next step in 2021.

Kevin Klix (Deer Park - small forward), Lachlan Watkins (Coburg, Melton South) and youngster Lachlan Phillips (Western Jets/Melton Centrals - midfield) have been welcoming additions for the Bloods in testing times for all clubs post-COVID, while dangerous forward Jordyn Cotter returns after a lengthy lay off with an injury.

"I know we have a young list, most of the guys are still 21-22 years old, but we think there is enough talent here to give it a shake."

Proven match-winning forward, Braedan Kight, is said to be flying on the track, while experienced trio Ben Archard, Matt Denham and runaway 2019 B&F winner Dyson Stevens are moving freely ahead of the shouldering duties that await them in the new season.     

Shaun Campbell (to Parkside), Daniel Walker (to Melton South), Darren Haby (WRFL), Michael Hibbert (work), Mitch Brockwell (to Diggers Rest) join Orr, Campbell and Griffiths as the other notable absentees for 2021.

Who knows what influence the departed and a difficult draw will have on the Bloods in 2021?
