BFNL Weekend Preview - Round 5, 2024

Looking ahead to the Round 5 action there is plenty on the line already early on in the 2024 season. With contender or pretender status still up in the air there is everything to play for come Saturday.

  • Darley

  • vs

  • Redan

SATURDAY MAY 11TH - 2.15PM @ DARLEY PARK

- BFNL MATCH OF THE ROUND LIVE WITH FULL COMMENTARY 2PM VIA BFNL MATCH CENTRE -

Last time they met - Darley 79 def. by Redan 97 (Darley Park, Round 10 2023)

The underdog tag won't phase Gary Learmonth's Redan given their recent record over the reigning premiers. And nor will the venue!

For the record the Lions have won four of the last five meetings between the two sides, three of those as underdogs and on three occasions at Darley Park.

The youthful Redan lineup set with the tough assignment will include as many as 10 players still eligible for the Under 19's. Rest assured they're not coming for the experience, rather every intention of winning.

Unfortunately for the Lions I can't see the result ending in anything but an experience. Since the Devils’ upset loss at the hands of Redan (Round 10, 2023),

Dan Jordan's men have gone 10-0 at home with an average winning margin of 62 points! Take the Melton South thrashing (212pts) out and you're still left with a 45+ points advantage.

The Devils are still hitting their straps, striving for the best version of themselves for four quarters.

Jordan is a coach always looking forward but I'm sure the anomalies of recent head-to-head results v Redan has not left the memory bank.

Expect the Devils to be on their mettle, a mission of their own to an extent, putting this game to bed early against a predominantly young group craving for any momentum or sniff of a repeat upset.

PLAYER WATCH
Leigh Spiteri (Darley)
In form small forward dangerous around goal, four & three majors last two weeks.

Riley Collins (Redan)
Sandringham Dragons rep - clean small forward who has impressed in opening few games. Had 15 disposals last week v Sebastopol, 10 contested.

SCOOP’S TIP
Darley

  • Ballarat

SATURDAY MAY 11TH - 2.15PM @ MACPHERSON PARK

Last time they met - Melton 147 def. Ballarat 26 (MacPhersons Park, Round 10 2023)

The Bloods (3-0) return fresh off the bye for a match-up against league improvers Ballarat.

The bye can play tricks on preparation and translate to starts in games and your capacity to run out games given the interruption, albeit just a week.

For this early time of year especially, teams, and players more to the point, would prefer continuity with their footy in the form of a game every week.

Given the part time nature of the competition, sides can slumber in the void of continuity.

Thats what visiting Swans coach Chris Maple will be hoping for when his young group make the trip to MacPherson Park, hopeful any edge will aid their mission.

The Swans endured a lesson from the Devils last week and will be looking for an immediate response, especially early to get the Bloods on the hop.

If the Swans can be up and about early and it translated to the scoreboard, surely it provides the means of an outside 'throw at the stumps' chance.

Forget last year’s visit from the Swans to MacPherson Park, they're an improved proposition in the here and now.

Yep, the Devils got hold of them last week, but Dan Jordan's army were made to play well and earn the 64-point win.

The same will be asked of Troy Scoble's Melton.

What level of threat the Swans pose to the powerful Bloods will be validated on the scoreboard.

The 'W' I anticipate is beyond them. I won't be on my own with that assessment but there's a curiosity out of both camps and more broadly across the competition, the gap size between the two.

Saturday will tell us.

PLAYER WATCH
Ryan Davis (Melton)
Small forward who can fly under the radar (6 goals / 3 games).

Callan Wellings (Ballarat)
Ex Collingwood VFL knows how to find the footy - had 22 disposals last week v Darley.

SCOOP’S TIP

  • Sunbury

  • vs

  • North Ballarat

SATURDAY MAY 11TH - 2.15PM @ CLARKE OVAL

Last time they met - North Ballarat 73 def. Sunbury 61 (Mars Stadium, Round 16 2023)

Hosts Sunbury (3-0) have done everything right ahead of their first hit out against genuine league heavyweights North Ballarat (2-1).

The Lions look well organised under new coach Matty White.

Compliance to team plan demands are being met on the back of thriving fitness levels and the addition of a handful of players all having an impact in their opening three games.

Sure, the Lions had Redan, Melton South, Bacchus Marsh and duly saluted but they look primed for a timely footy audit on their home deck.

North Ballarat will deny Sunbury the 'outside ball' they've been used to in their three wins to date and will be made to earn every possession, forward 50 entry and score.

Can the Lions withstand the frugal nature of Brendan McCartney's group who deny you any easy ball?

Despite finishing runners-up last year, the Roosters have also added impact players to their make up for the 2024 season, and to great effect given the small sample size.

The visitors have had a tough opening month post bye in Round One having already played Darley (W), Melton (L) and the Lakers (W) and should be ready for the next real challenge that is Sunbury on the big ground at Clarke Oval.

The result of this game will not surprise either way.

Sunbury will start deserved underdogs and will need to replicate finals like qualities to get the job done.

Jack Riding returns from Werribee VFL (bye) for North Ballarat and will provide another hurdle for the Lions to overcome despite the absence of Jamie Quick (doubtful).

The Lions are healthy, in-sync and ready for the North Ballarat challenge.

Surely, they're up to it, aren't they?

PLAYER WATCH
Nathan Wood (Sunbury)
Small defender, solid start to the season - had 27 disposals last week v Bacchus Marsh.

Mal White (North Ballarat)
Newcomer on the rise at new club with another solid game last week including 28 disposals and 2 goals v Lake Wendouree.

SCOOP’S TIP
Sunbury

  • Sebastopol

  • vs

  • Bacchus Marsh

SATURDAY MAY 11TH - 2.15PM @ MARTY BUSCH RESERVE

Last time they met - Sebastopol 138 def. Bacchus Marsh 17 (Marty Busch Reserve, Round 1 2023)

Given the Burras (1-3) struggles to start the season the Cobras (1-3) are right in with a chance recording a second win in Ballarat from as many visits in the opening five rounds.

Injuries to key Burra playmakers Lachie Cassidy (calf) and Riley O'Keefe (arm) will aid the Cobras’ cause despite the expected inclusions of Werribee listed pair Jay Dahlhaus and Jesse Clark who have the bye in the VFL.

The absence of Jack Bambury (hamstring) hasn't helped the Burra either.

A change of luck, albeit a win will at least get Sebastopol's season back on track in the short term.

A fourth loss in a row however, will hinder their finals chances despite a favourable draw.

For the Cobras, evidence of growth under Dennis Armfield from week to week is paramount.

Bacchus Marsh will arrive with no excuses, sharing a similar age profile to the hosts and give themselves a genuine hope.

Both sides aren't travelling well on the results front but have had their moments of quality play.

More of 'those' moments surely creates more positivity and confidence for two groups aiming to work their way back squaring the ledger.

Can the Cobras execute on the basic fundamentals for long enough to warrant the four premiership points?

That is their greatest challenge for their efforts without the ball have shown merit.

The Burra on the other hand will be trying everything to avoid a 1-4 start under new coach Tony Lockyer.

PLAYER WATCH
Jed Hill (Sebastopol)
17 disposals last week against Redan. More will be asked of Hill in 2024 between the arcs as he's moved up the ground. More than capable player.

Ethan McKercher (Bacchus Marsh)
Livewire small forward. Doesn't need many possessions to have an impact (21 disp and a goal last week v Sunbury).

SCOOP’S TIP
Sebastopol

  • Lake Wendouree

  • vs

  • East Point

SATURDAY MAY 11TH - 2.15PM @ C.E BROWN RESERVE

Last time they met – Lake Wendouree 23 def. by East Point 145 (CE Brown Reserve, Round 17 2023)

East Point (2-1) travel across town for a meeting with the Lakers (0-4) ahead of their Round 6 'ultimate challenge' on the road against Melton (3-0).

Kangas’ coach Joe Carmody will look to consolidate further on the good habits of the previous two weeks with another big win over the struggling Lakers.

Just how the hosts contain the Johnston brothers, season return pair Mikitja Rottumah-Onus and Jacob Brown and dangerous forward Strahan Robinson and Bryson McDougall looms a four-quarter struggle.

I can see the Lakers matching it with East for two quarters on the whole, take your pick which ones.

Tipping the final margin on the scoreboard will be reflective of the two quarters East Point were able to 'getaway'.

Lakers’ coach Rohan Brown has remained positive throughout despite the four losses and will be looking for a response from his young team that can equate to a few 'mini-wins' in game, against a more fancied visiting party.

Unfortunately, we haven't seen much of Lakers exciting new recruit Jayden Wright (ankle - Round 1) but the progress of tall duo Tom Zampatti and Felix Fogarty will again be on display as the hosts aim to spoil the party for the East Point Kangaroos.

PLAYER WATCH
Angus Gove (Lake Wendouree)
Honest as they come, and you can expect much of the same on the weekend. Had a team high 27 disposals last week v North Ballarat.

Jacob Brown (East Point)
Return game to club last week ended in BOG recognition with his 34 disposals and 16 marks v Melton South.

BFNL Weekend Preview - Round 5, 2025

There will be one eye on premiership favouritism ahead of this weekend with some of the big contenders set to face off, while at the other end of the ladder an inaugural 'W' on the board could kick start a team's season.

SATURDAY MAY 10TH - 2.15PM @ DARLEY PARK

KEY STATS
All matches:

Last win at Darley:
Darley 2019, Ballarat 2022

Last three matches:

2023 - Darley 10.11.71 d Ballarat 3.13.31 @ Ballarat
2024 - Darley 18.11.119 d Ballarat 8.7.55 @ Ballarat

Saturday’s clash at Darley Park sees two sides at different ends of the momentum spectrum — with the Devils riding high after a dominant Round 4 performance, and Ballarat searching for answers after a bruising second-half fadeout.

It’s the first time in four seasons that these two will square off twice during the home and away fixture, and although Darley have had the upper hand in their last two meetings, there’s still a bit of unfinished business between the pair — none more memorable than the 2022 Semi Final classic where the Swans pinched a one-point win.

But history at Darley Park doesn’t favour the visitors.

Ballarat have walked away with the four points on just four of their 19 visits to the ground.

If they’re to re-write that stat, the Swans will need a serious four-quarter effort — something they didn’t produce last week when Sunbury dismantled them after halftime.

Winning the contested ball and cutting off Darley’s clean possession chains will be key, particularly in the middle where the Devils' midfield have been damaging.

Ballarat have shown gradual improvement in defensive pressure, with Zac Haintz holding firm down back and Fraser Perkins bringing tackle pressure around the contest.

But to challenge the Devils, they’ll need to lift their work rate across the ground and limit Darley’s ability to control the air through marks and transition.

Coming off an ample win over Lake Wendouree, Dan Jordan’s Devils look to be hitting their stride. For Ballarat, it’s about rediscovering theirs — and fast.

  • Melton

SATURDAY MAY 10TH - 2.15PM @ CITY OVAL

KEY STATS
All matches:
Redan 24, Melton 20, drawn 1

Last win at Redan:
Redan 2014, Melton 2024

Last three matches:
2022 - Melton 15.8.98 d Redan 13.10.88 @ Redan
2023 - Melton 20.12.132 d Redan 9.11.65 @ Redan
2024 - Melton 14.8.92 d Redan 4.1.25 @ Redan

Fresh off registering their first win of the season, Redan now face a big test early days in the competition — a clash with the reigning premiers and unbeaten Melton.

While Round 4 delivered much-needed relief for the Lions, Melton’s narrow escape against North Ballarat was likely a bit too close for comfort.

That result may only sharpen the Bloods' focus heading into this one.

Redan’s ability to stay in the contest has been underpinned by strong individual form.

Brody Pope continues to impress with his ball-winning ability and work rate, while Jake Connolly’s consistent output across the first month has been a key pillar for the Lions.

But as they prepare to take on one of the competition’s most disciplined outfits, it will take far more than a few standout performances — it’ll require a genuine team-wide lift.

Both sides have shown no trouble in generating inside 50s, but it’s what happens next that may well decide the outcome.

Redan rank lowest in the competition for forward entry efficiency — a stat that simply must improve if they’re to keep this close. Melton’s polished ball movement and dangerous forward setup will take advantage of any wastefulness.

For the Bloods, Jaycob Hickey continues to be one of the quiet drivers of their success, linking play with precision.

Blake Souter’s relentless tackling pressure and regular score involvements have also made him a tough matchup for any side.

Melton will be out to keep their perfect record intact, while Redan will view this as a huge opportunity to take a big scalp and climb closer to the top six.

  • North Ballarat

  • Bacchus Marsh

SATURDAY MAY 10TH - 2.15PM @ MARS STADIUM

KEY STATS
All matches: North Ballarat 50, Bacchus Marsh 11

Last win at North:
North Ballarat 2024, Bacchus Marsh 2017

Last three matches:
2023 - North Ballarat 18.13.121 d Bacchus Marsh 7.11.53 @ Bacchus Marsh
2024 - North Ballarat 11.13.79 d Bacchus Marsh 9.6.60 @ Bacchus Marsh
2024 - North Ballarat 17.14.116 d Bacchus Marsh 5.9.39 @ North Ballarat

Still chasing their first win of the 2025 season, North Ballarat will be hoping home ground history is on their side as they host Bacchus Marsh in what despite early days, looms as a crucial game for both teams’ finals ambitions.

The Roosters have a dominant record over the Cobras at home, having won 27 of their 31 meetings, with Bacchus Marsh last tasting success on North’s turf back in 2017.

With both sides expected to be genuine top six contenders, this clash holds more weight than just four points.

For the Cobras, a win would provide a handy buffer inside the top six — especially with games against Ballarat and Melton coming up.

For Clint Proctor’s North Ballarat, banking four points here would set up a critical next fortnight, with more winnable matches to come against teams outside the top tier.

If North are to get it done, they’ll need to lean into their speed and movement, particularly through the middle of the ground, to sidestep Bacchus Marsh’s trademark tackling pressure and defensive setup.

Improving their efficiency inside 50 will also be a key focus — the Roosters will want more marks inside forward 50 and better conversion than what they managed last week in their loss to Melton.

On the other hand, Dennis Armfield’s Cobras will be looking to patch up their third quarter fade-outs, where they’re yet to get the better of their opposition — and find ways to win more hard ball and contested possession around the ground.

With both teams having plenty to gain, Saturday’s clash could be a defining early chapter in their 2025 campaigns.

Tip: Bacchus Marsh

SATURDAY MAY 10TH - 2.15PM @ MARTY BUSCH RESERVE

Sebastopol 2024, Lake Wendouree 2017

Last three matches:
2023 - Sebastopol 15.12.102 d Lake Wendouree 8.8.56 @ Lake Wendouree
2024 - Sebastopol 17.16.118 d Lake Wendouree 5.8.38 @ Sebastopol
2024 - Sebastopol 11.11.77 d Lake Wendouree 3.7.25 @ Lake Wendouree

It’s a big opportunity for both Sebastopol and Lake Wendouree to finally get on the board in 2025 as two winless sides meet in a crucial early-season clash.

The Burra came agonisingly close last week, falling just two points short of Redan in a contest they were in up to their necks all day.

While still chasing that first win, Sebastopol have shown flashes of finals-quality football — now it’s about sustaining that across four quarters.

For Lake Wendouree, fast starts have been encouraging, but their inability to sustain effort beyond quarter time has rued their chances week after week.

After being blown away in the second half against Darley, the Lakers must focus on stringing together a consistent, competitive performance.

Sebastopol have taken plenty of marks so far this season, but they’re being let down at the source.

To take control of this contest, they'll need to lift in contested ball and improve their forward entries.

Connecting more cleanly with target man Hugo Papst — who has the ability to make a real impact — could go a long way to unlocking scoreboard pressure.

The Lakers have found a big contributor in the ruck in Tom Zampatti, who continues to dominate the hit-outs.

The challenge now is capitalising on his work — gaining possession, maintaining control, and using the ball with more efficiency going forward.

Neither side would have pencilled in Round 5 sitting 9th and 10th on the ladder, but it’s the Burra who have held up better in terms of percentage and competitive consistency.

A win here could spark their campaign and lift them back into the mix for a top six spot.

SATURDAY MAY 10TH - 1.15PM @ CLARKE OVAL

Last three matches:

2024 - East Point 16.6.102 d Sunbury 12.10.82 @ East Point
2024 - East Point 15.5.95 d Sunbury 7.8.50 @ Sunbury

There’s no place like home for Sunbury.

The Lions will be out to defend their record this weekend as they host an unbeaten East Point side in a clash that could have major top four implications.

While the Roos managed to get the better of the Lions on their own turf last season, the head-to-head history slightly favours Sunbury, especially at Clarke Oval - where the home side has consistently found another gear.

East Point enter Round 5 without a blemish, though their upcoming fortnight — featuring both Sunbury and Melton — will truly test their early credentials.

Meanwhile, Sunbury have only dropped their season opener to Darley and have been trending upward since, especially on the stats sheet.

The Lions currently lead the competition for disposals, hard ball gets, and intercept possessions — numbers that reflect their clean use across the ground.

However, the two teams are almost neck and neck in clearances, inside 50s, and contested possessions, making this clash one likely to be decided by moments of efficiency and pressure, rather than dominance.

Both sides typically start strong, so whoever can edge ahead early will have the advantage.

Sunbury’s forward pairing of Jake Sutton and Jake Egan — fresh off five goals apiece — will be major threats.

The Roos’ defensive duo of Liam Howard and Jacob Brown will need to be at their absolute best to curb their influence.

Injury setbacks to Paddy Hannaford and Max Wilson will force East Point into some structural changes, with Joe Dodd expected to return to bolster the side.

A win here won’t just be about four points — it could cement a foothold in the top four and signal early intent for the premiership race.

BFNL Weekend Preview - Round 6, 2023

Get set for a big weekend of games as the BFNL celebrates its Indigenous Round! With plenty of blockbusters across the board, Scoop checks out what there is to look forward to come Saturday.

  • Ballarat

  • vs

  • North Ballarat

SATURDAY MAY 20TH - 2.15PM @ ALFREDTON RECREATION RESERVE

Last time they met - Ballarat 64 def. North Ballarat 60
(Alfredton Recreation Reserve, Round 15 2022)

This game is set to tell us more about North Ballarat, who fell short on expectations again last week with a 20-point loss to East Point.

Despite their 2-3 record heading in, the reality is North Ballarat has won just three of its last 11 games with wins over Melton South, Bacchus Marsh and Redan. Brendan McCartney's boys look a far cry from their Round 13 win last year over eventual premiers Melton.

North Ballarat's best is very good but often reserved for MARS Stadium. On Saturday, the young Swans welcome the Roosters and should hold no fears.

For Chris Maple's young boys another step toward closing the gap between their best and worst footy will be a focus. While McCartney has not said anything public resembling a similar narrative, I suspect they're in the same boat.

This battle will be entertaining, an exciting look into the youth of the BFNL and what it holds for the future, especially for these two sides.

While the Swans averted down the path of youth and have been reluctant to spruik finals for obvious reasons, today looms more as an ideal opportunity for the Roosters to put a game to bed. But that task will come with its challenges, especially on the road.

The contest in the middle should be a ripper with Swans duo Marcus Powling and Will Liston taking on Cam McCullum and Riley Polkinghorne. Jack Riding's availability for North Ballarat will be a point of interest while the return of Tom Hotchin (knee) nears by the day.

Expect North Ballarat to do enough without setting the world on fire as both sides strive for a complete team performance. With that seemingly unachievable in a week, expect some individual brilliance to prove the difference. Given that scenario, it's the Roosters who hold the aces.

Scoop’s tip: North Ballarat

  • Darley

SATURDAY MAY 20TH - 2.15PM @ MELTON RECREATION RESERVE

Last time they met - Darley 82 def. Melton South 56 (Darley Park, Round 12 2022)

Unbeaten Darley will be happy to get through the meeting with bottom side Melton South unscathed, as a top of the table clash looms with Melton in Round 8.

The struggling Panthers are 0-5 to start the season with each loss in excess of 100 points. In fact, the home side hasn't won a game in its last 12 matches.

Darley on the hand are 4-0 and 10-2 in the same timeframe. Only Melton (11-1) has won more over that period, including a premiership and current run of 10 games unbeaten.

Darley second year coach Dan Jordan will be well aware of the plight suffered by Sunbury after their two week build up (Melton South & Lake Wendouree) into the highly anticipated Round 5 meet with the Devils ended in a 56-point disaster.

Jordan will be hopeful any resemblance for his group (vs Melton South Round 6 & vs Lake Wendouree Round 7) into Melton can be avoided. Sunbury booted scores 170+ against the Panthers and Lakers, proving in essence, a false economy.

A handful of tireless Panthers faithfully led by Cody Chapman will keep the Devils honest for a period before the visitors projected weight of possession and forward 50 entries on the small ground takes its toll on the scoreboard.

How the Panthers contain the Devils top end talent in Brett Bewley and Billy Myers will tell its own tale, while a way around the Devils’ defence to score presents its own degree of difficulty.

The visitors average just 47.5 points against (comp rank #2) from their opening four games, all on the road.

One overriding concern for new Panthers coach duo Jason Hamilton and Ryan Hoy is these Devils are just warming up with plenty of scope for improvement.

  • Bacchus Marsh

SATURDAY MAY 20TH - 2.15PM @ MACPHERSON PARK OVAL

Last time they met - Melton 111 def. Bacchus Marsh 35 (MacPhersons Park, Round 12 2022)

Expect the Bloods to continue on their winning ways after this round’s meeting with Bacchus Marsh.

While sharing a common goal, it's fair to say these two are at completely different stages of their journey. The Bloods, under Aaron Tymms are aiming to go back-to-back and sit unbeaten on top of the BFNL table with five wins while the rebuilding Cobras, under new coach Jason Williams, are 10th with a winless start from their four games.

To put the Cobras rebuild into perspective, just six members played in both meetings against Redan (Round 17, 2022) and more recently (Round 4, 2023), essentially five games apart. What we saw of the Cobras in Round 4’s narrow loss to Redan was encouraging, enough almost label last week's bye as untimely.

A stall in momentum looms more likely for the Cobras as they say goodbye to up to six of their Coates Talent League Under 18 representatives who return to Western Jets and GWV Rebels duties.

Depth against the competition benchmark will be exposed, that is a given, but it provides Williams with another sample of size of where the Cobras are at and where greater improvements lie.

The Bloods enviable strength is with their even spread of impact players. Go after two or three, there's another three or four to assume the mantle and get the job done.

When you combine the Bloods even spread of talent with a collective selfless buy-in, the potion equates to an even broader run of success - 10 games unbeaten, including 11 of their last 12 and a drought breaking Premiership.

The Cobras will look to gain the type of learnings only the very best can provide and look to resemble more of Williams vision into the future.

SATURDAY MAY 20TH - 2.15PM @ MARTY BUSCH RECREATION RESERVE

Last time they met - Sebastopol 111 def. Lake Wendouree 65
(Marty Busch Recreation Reserve, Round 17 2022)

Even the most devout Lakers fan would have savoured last week’s win over Melton South, however forecasting Round 6 chances against the Burra could be slim at best.

The Burra sit at 3-1 on the ladder and have been playing some good footy for a while with nine wins from their previous 12 games - their only three losses coming against Melton.

After shrugging off Ballarat in the second half last week, Burra coaching duo Luke Kiel and Michael Columbro will aim to put this game to bed early, removing any residual confidence from the Lakers after ending an 18-game losing streak last weekend.

The Burra have been difficult to score against in first quarters from their opening four games with a 111-23 point (+88) advantage. With games already against Bacchus Marsh (0.2), Melton (1.1), Melton South (0.1) and Ballarat (2.1). Only the Swans have manufactured more than one goal.

So, heed the warning Lakers, file away last week's win with an eye forward to your next success. While it's unlikely to come against a well drilled Burras outfit, you can minimise the damage by starting well.

For the record the Burra are 133-61 (+72) for second quarters but would concede the one-sided nature of their numbers are enhanced having played three of the four bottom sides. This week’s meeting against the Lakers will make it four bottom side meets for the Burra in their five games. They must be champing on the bit for their next like-for-like challenge.

Can the Lakers be the ones to surprise and provide that? Only time will tell, but a fair dinkum crack is what coach Jack Fitzpatrick will ask for and knowing Kiel and Clumbro, would gladly welcome.

Scoop’s tip: Sebastopol

  • Redan

SATURDAY MAY 20th - 2.15PM @ EASTERN OVAL

Last time they met - East Point 109 def. Redan 64
(Eastern Oval, Round 11 2022)

The progressive Kangas will be hoping to deny the Lions four-premiership points and remain firmly inside the top six when the two sides meet on Eastern Oval.

The 2018/19 Premiers will start warm favorites considering the Lions three wins have come against Ballarat (8th), Lake Wendouree (9th) and Bacchus Marsh (10th).

As East Point coach Jackson Merrett nears a return to the playing field he's had a birds-eye view into the potential capabilities of his young group.

The Lions will provide a legitimate challenge as both sides eye a spot in the bottom half of the six.

Merrett's boys could not have been more impressive last week disposing of North Ballarat by 20 points. 30 scoring shots to 20 in favour of the Kangas gives every indication the margin could have been greater.

For Gary Learmonth's Redan some luck on the selection front will only help their cause. Without Lachie George, Cooper Craig-Peters and Liam Hoy last week, the Lions look well shy of their best despite some encouraging performances from the younger brigade in recent weeks.

There were no surprises in the nature of last week’s 67-point loss to Melton, in fact a run against the competition benchmark should hold them in good stead.

The Kangas took care of the Lions at their last meeting, albeit some time ago, but on current form there is not enough evidence to suggest Redan has made up the ground in that time.

For the record, East Point has won four of the last five meetings between the two sides by an average of 48.5 points.

Given what transpired at their last meeting it's hard to fathom visiting Sebastopol's chances of repeating the dose are slim at best.

Ironically it was barely 10 games ago the Burra were seemingly up and about heading into a final’s series on the back of a 22-point win over the Roosters.

Unfortunately for Tony Lockyer's group, barring the 80-point win over the Lakers in Round 1, Burra fans have had little to smile about.

And this week’s assignment doesn't get any easier for the Burra who head to Mars Stadium aiming to avoid a fifth straight loss.

The hosts deserve a forgiven run for their failings on the road against Sunbury last week for they were decimated for reasons beyond their control.

Any resemblance of Brendan McCartney's group to the one that downed the Devils in Round 2 or were within a goal of Melton will likely prove too much for the Burra who have had their own share of bad luck with injury and unavailability.

Given the current landscape McCartney will be just happy banking the win and seeing his players healthy with a response following last week’s disappointment.

And I expect them to do so against a Burra outfit completely bereft of confidence. What confidence they do in fact have will not be enough to trouble the Roosters on their home deck.

Lockyer is a realist, he'll be citing 'mini wins' throughout the afternoon to validate signs of improvement given an upset result is firmly in the 'highly unlikely' basket.

While the thought of the Burra slipping to 1-5 on the win/loss front and entrenched in the bottom three, the Roosters will be keen to return to the winners list themselves, avoiding the unlikely scenario going 2 wins and 3 loses come 5pm.

  • East Point

SATURDAY MAY 18TH - 2.15PM @ MACPHERSON PARK

Last time they met - Melton 85 def. by East Point 86 (City Oval, Semi Final 1 2023)

Who could forget the Kangas’ nail-biting upset win over the Bloods in last year’s Semi Final?

Well, Melton can.

A fresh set of eyes in the name of a coach into the 2024 season has re-invigorated a Bloods list determined to deliver on a range of new goals and KPI's from week to week, confident process will take care of results.

It’s hard to fault Troy Scoble in the infancy of his Bloods’ reign with the club’s unbeaten, superior percentage record from its opening four games.

Only North Ballarat gave them a scare getting within a goal despite the Bloods leading all day.

It's hoped more broadly the same challenges for the Bloods will come in the form of the Kangas because let's face it - only North Ballarat, East Point, Darley and Sunbury look capable, on exposed form, of upsetting Scoble's scrupulous plan.

Kangas’ coach Joe Carmody will be no stranger to the potency of the Bloods outfit especially forward of the ball.

Denying dangerous quartet Braedan Kight (25 goals, comp rank #1), Ryan Carter (12, #9), Kyle Borg (10, #13) and Ryan Davis (8, #15) opportunities around goal won't be easy.

Sure, the direct matchups will have a say, but it's the source, the providers that will determine this result - namely the midfield.

If, and only if, the Kangas midfield can win stoppage and clearance numbers efficiently enough to limit turnover can they be given a chance. And it's in this area they match up well against the Bloods - The Johnston brothers, Mikitja Rottumah-Onus, Alex Molan (if available) and Joe Dodd are more than capable of getting the numbers to warrant advantage.

It's how efficiently they avoid an unforgiving, rebounding Bloods half back line that will ask more their execution and decision-making abilities.

The Kangas have two primary threats forward, Strahan Robinson (14 goals, rank #5), and Bryson McDougall (12, #10) both of whom proved a handful at their last meet, on the back of an efficient midfield without Jordy Johnston.

The result will tell us more about East Point and their credentials after their horror first round failure against the similar opposition Darley, a month ago.

PLAYER WATCH
Braedan Kight (Melton)
Dangerous x-factor forward leading the Tony Locket Medal with 25 goals (4 games). Averaging just under 17 disposals per game means Kight is kicking a goal every 2.68 possessions (avg). Look out!

Matty Johnston (East Point)
Key driver in the Kangas upset Semi-Final win over the Bloods at their last meet. The classy midfielder is averaging 20 kicks, 13 handballs, 7 marks, 7 clearances and 5 inside 50's in 2024.

  • Darley

SATURDAY MAY 18TH - 2.15PM @ CLARKE OVAL

Last time they met - Darley 124 def. Sunbury 79 (Darley Park, Round 18 2023)

Similar to the East Point scenario, this game’s outcome will tell us more about high flying Sunbury (4-0) on their home deck when they meet reigning premiers Darley (4-1).

The Lions have done everything right under new coach Matt White, making the adjustment to team planning and preferred structure look seamless.

Nonetheless, four games in is not enough sample size to get carried away with any forecasting just yet.

Let's see how the Lions perform under the pressure against the likes of Darley, East Point at Eastern Oval (Round 8) and league heavyweights Melton (Round 10).

I'm happy to give decimated North Ballarat a mulligan for their effort last week, due largely for health reasons.

So that leaves the Lions form with a win over Redan (25 points), Melton South and Bacchus Marsh.

In fairness, each of the Lions’ four wins have shown compliance and an heir of dominance that Devils’ coach Dan Jordan cannot ignore.

While Lions forward duo Jake Sutton (20 goals, comp rank #2) and Mitch McLean (13, #6) make up 44% of all Sunbury goals to warrant like for like attention, it's the efficiency of their defence that has seen the greatest improvement on last year.

Tyson Lever, Nathan Wood, Jack Newitt, Jack Hannett, Sean Reilly, newcomers Dean Muir and Jordan Tentonello make up an impressive back seven option and are clearly thriving under the team defence theory with high efficiency numbers.

Their ability to exit cleanly at low risk has been a feature- Wood, Hannett and Muir especially. You know what you're getting with Lever - essentially the licensed beneficiary to rebound pressured or bombed entries with his customary intercept mark game.

However, the likelihood of an experienced Devils’ midfield succumbing to the Lions intentions are slim at best.

In form trio Brett Bewley, Luther Baker and Matt Denham remain the competition yardstick of midfield combos and will stretch the Lions core for output with and without the ball.

The dominance at their two previous meets was palpable, two wins for the Devils by a margin of 40+ points.

Any midfield advantage for the Devils will equate to considerably more entries inside 50 to a feverish forward line eager to put a dent in the Lions new found levels of trust and confidence.

For the record, Sunbury (4-0) have won 15.5 of their 16 quarters to date (comp rank #1), Darley 15/20 (comp rank #3).

PLAYER WATCH
Mitch McLean (Sunbury)
Confident pressure small forward enjoying weight of Lions forward 50 entries. Kicked 13 goals from 4 games (comp rank #6)

Brett Bewley (Darley)
The reigning dual Henderson Medalist even had Lions fans in awe at his last trip to the Clarke Oval with 50 possessions and six goals out of the midfield. Ridiculous numbers!

  • Melton South

SATURDAY MAY 18TH - 2.15PM @ MADDINGLEY PARK

Last time they met - Melton South 20 def. by Bacchus Marsh 126 (Melton Recreation Reserve, Round 15 2023)

Expect Bacchus Marsh (2-3) to consolidate with back-to-back wins and square their win/loss ledger under new coach Dennis Armfield when they host the embattled Panthers at Maddingley Park.

Ironically, it was this corresponding fixture last year that Melton South won their only quarter of the season after leading the Cobras 3.2 to 1.5 at the first change in Round 9.

As it stands, since the beginning of the 2023 season Melton South have won just one of 80 quarters.

To be frank, this meeting gives every indication of how far for the Cobras.

Armfield will not be taking anything for granted as the Cobras remain a work in progress themselves striving for the complete four quarter performance under the former Carlton utility.

There were many encouraging signs for the Cobras witnessed on the road last week in the club’s big win over Sebastopol.

Surely the group needs little motivation to build on those habits in front of a home crowd given a likely win will see them inside the top six come 5pm ahead of their bye in Round 7.

The Cobras, as their form suggests, can vary from matching it with the best for periods by taking the game on with their encouraging run and carry with the ball and frantic pressure to a stagnant, insular brand Armfield is desperate eradicate.

Count on more of the 'positive' Cobras against the struggling Panthers, an all-in attempt to peak again with an eye toward adding another layer of belief and confidence that will prepare them mentally post bye.

Looking forward to seeing the potency, discipline and isolation of the Cobras front half and what that can amount to.

Surely the team first theme will prevail over the want of any individual's agenda and that be validated on the scoreboard.

Given the right service and weight of entries a compliant Cobras outfit could eye something in the 25-goal range on the scoreboard.

For Travis Hodgson's Melton South, another tough day at the office is expected but they can take solace getting more games into progressive young talent, remaining on the path of increased sense and purpose at the level.

PLAYER WATCH
Dennis Armfield (Bacchus Marsh)
Despite his primary role as coach the former Carlton player is averaging a handy 16 disposals and 5.4 score involvements. Also 8 goals, 5 games (comp rank #14)

Cody Chapman (Melton South)
An injury interrupted start to the season has since witnessed a positive return for the Panthers Captain - above average for disposals (19) and elite for tackles (6.7)

  • Lake Wendouree

SATURDAY MAY 18TH - 2.15PM @ CITY OVAL

Last time they met – Lake Wendouree 28 def. by Redan 83 (CE Brown Reserve, Round 15 2023)

Despite a 66-point loss to Darley last week Gary Learmonth’s young Lions will look to replicate their efforts from the last three quarters when they host Lake Wendouree at City Oval.

While the Lions will again be without a few prime movers, they're not short on quality young depth that can come in and fill a role.

At least 10 Under 19 eligible players including two Under 17s tested their mettle against the Devils and performed admirably. Enough to carry further confidence into this matchup against the winless Lakers.

Lions’ forwards Grant Bell (19 goals) and Marty Boyer (7 goals) will look to bounce back and fill their pockets after a tough day at the office in Round 5.

Expect them to be up and about wreaking havoc with a weight of forward 50 entries that will provide them with every chance hitting the scoreboard.

Tipping Lakers duo Brayden Helyar and Angus Gove might be set the task of containment. Both have enjoyed solid starts to their respective seasons despite the 0-5 narrative.

Lakers big men Tom Zampatti and Felix Fogarty will enjoy a distinct height advantage in the ruck in the absence of Taj Bond who is subject to availability with his Coates Talent League commitments.

Looking forward to seeing if Bailey Thompson can add to his innate ability of hitting the scoreboard.

The wiry forward/mid has 12 goals (comp rank #7) to his name from five games and has impressed.

Lakers’ coach Rohan Brown will be wanting a response from his midfield this week up against a youthful Lions combo with the exception of experienced campaigner Lachie George.

Both sides will again have the opportunity to explore the potential of their young groups in what should be an entertaining watch for those in attendance.

Unfortunately for the Lakers, the Lions look well ahead in the progress stakes, hence their unofficial warm favorites tag.

BFNL Weekend Preview - Round 6, 2025

Round 6 is headline by an all anticipated grand final rematch with other important clashes across the league set to shape a tightening ladder.

2024 - Ballarat 11.19.85 d Bacchus Marsh 10.9.69 @ Bacchus Marsh

Picking a winner between Bacchus Marsh and Ballarat has become a tough ask in recent years, with close finishes and home-ground advantage shaping the narrative.

Of their last six meetings, three have been decided by single figures—and notably, five of those have gone the way of the home side.

With both teams sitting inside the top six after five rounds, this Round 6 clash is about more than just four points.

A win adds valuable breathing room from the chasing pack, while a loss could open the door for others to sneak in.

Both sides have had early season reality checks against top-tier opponents, making this a test for their finals credentials.

Ballarat’s strength around the contest has been a standout, led by the presence of Lewis Rinaldi and the intercept work of Zac Haintz.

Their ability to win contested ball and create turnovers will be crucial if they want to stop the Cobras getting off to a strong start—a weakness the Swans have struggled to overcome themselves, having conceded the most first-quarter points in the league.

Conversely, Bacchus Marsh will be focused on avoiding their third-quarter fade.

If they can better capitalise on Luke Goetz’s dominance in the ruck and connect cleanly with their midfielders, they’ll be well-placed to finish strong.

Both Ash Baker and Dennis Armfield will see this as a chance to measure exactly where their sides stand in a tight and unpredictable middle tier of the ladder.

A win won’t just boost confidence—it could be the difference between a top four push and clinging to sixth.

2024 Grand Final - Melton 11.6.72 d East Point 7.13.55 @ City Oval

The long-awaited rematch of last year’s grand final arrives this weekend at Eastern Oval, and while both clubs share a rich recent history—including two flags apiece since 2018—the 2025 clash finds the sides on distinctly different paths.

In their past six meetings, five have been decided by 17 points or less—thrillers that have cemented a fierce rivalry. But this time, East Point face an uphill battle.

The Roos enter the contest under a growing injury cloud.

Key forward Bryson McDougall and explosive midfielder Joe Dodd remain under doubt, while Jacob Brown is a confirmed out—an absence that will be sorely felt given his stellar form to start the year.

The growing unavailability list has begun to test East Point's depth at the worst possible moment.

Melton, on the other hand, appear to be ticking every box in their premiership defence.

Undefeated and clinical, the Bloods’ efficiency with ball in hand has given them the edge over even the most evenly matched opposition.

That’s what separates them from the Roos on the stat sheet—a 1–2% difference across the board, but execution being the telling factor.

With Braedan Kight continuing to be a focal point up forward and adding in the likes of Liam Carter and Jaycob Hickey creating headaches for opposition, Melton’s forward line is primed to exploit the Roos’ depleted backline.

For East Point, the stakes are huge.

Tied on points with fellow contenders Darley and Sunbury, a win here could reassert their credentials. But it’s the Bloods who roll into Round 6 with all the momentum.

2024 - North Ballarat 12.15.87 d Redan 9.7.61 @ Redan

While North Ballarat holds the upper hand in recent matchups—having won eight of their last ten against Redan—history will count for little when these two sides, both hungry for momentum, face off this weekend.

The Roosters remain winless after five rounds despite boasting some of the league’s strongest clearance numbers.

It’s not a question of getting their hands on the footy—it’s what happens next.

Their struggle to transition from stoppage dominance to meaningful inside 50s and scoreboard pressure has proven costly.

The presence of key targets like Hugh Trigg and Josh Morris offers hope.

If they can get better delivery into the forward line, it could be the difference between another missed opportunity and a breakthrough win.

Redan, on the other hand, have shown glimpses of what they’re capable of—especially in opening terms.

They’ve started well in most games this season and even led Melton at half time last week.

But the Lions’ recurring second-half fade-outs have kept them from building any real momentum.

Brody Pope and Rory Gunsser have both shown they can perform across four quarters.

If others follow suit, Redan will be more than just competitive—they’ll be in a position to win.

With both sides sitting outside the top six and the ladder beginning to separate, this clash looms as a genuine must-win for either team to keep their finals hopes alive.

2024 - Darley 7.10.52 d Sebastopol 6.11.47 @ Darley

While Darley hold the overall win tally against Sebastopol, recent history paints a far more even picture.

In fact, the last seven matchups between the two sides have been split almost down the middle—with the Devils taking the most recent four, but by just 6, 17, 19 and 5 points respectively.

Every one of those games could have gone either way.

Sebastopol will enter the clash lifted by a dominant performance against Lake Wendouree, but they’ll need to bring that intensity from the opening bounce—not just the final term—if they want to knock off the Devils.

The Burra forwards will be key.

Young gun Cooper Littlehales was electric last week with five goals, and Hugo Papst continues to be a key target up forward.

But they'll be up against one of the stingiest backlines in the competition.

Billy Myers has led Darley’s defence with composure, intercepting cleanly and limiting opposition inside 50s.

In the midfield, it’s a battle of big names.

Brett Bewley’s 52-touch game last week was a masterclass in accumulation and influence, but Sebastopol’s Lach Cassidy is no stranger to winning the footy and turning games on his own terms.

His ability to apply pressure and find the contested ball could prove pivotal.

Statistically, Darley have a clear edge in winning loose ball and contested possessions—a strength Sebastopol will need to challenge if they want to stay in the hunt.

The Burra simply cannot afford a slow start or lapses across quarters; a four-quarter effort is non-negotiable.

A win here would be a major statement for Sebastopol and could reshape the top-six race.

But for Darley, it’s another opportunity to reinforce their standing as one of the 2025 flag favourites.

2024 - Sunbury 25.12.162 d Lake Wendouree 5.4.34 @ Lake Wendouree

Lake Wendouree and Sunbury meet for the 50th time this weekend—and history strongly favours the visitors.

The Lions have enjoyed the upper hand across the journey and come into this one riding a seven-game winning streak against the Lakers, with those victories coming at an average margin of 71 points.

For the home side, there’s no hiding the size of the challenge ahead.

One critical step in closing the gap? Containing Sunbury’s blistering starts.

The Lions have been the competition’s best first-quarter team in 2025, holding their opponents to just 12 points on average in opening terms.

That early dominance is built off Sunbury’s spread of contributors across the ground.

Tyson Lever continues to thrive on defence with elite intercept work, while Josh Guthrie’s form through the middle has been prolific.

Then there's Jake Sutton—fresh off five final-quarter goals last week—who looms as a major threat up forward.

Expect the Lakers to throw their best stopper at him.

For Lake Wendouree, winning more of the footy and improving forward entries will be crucial.

Getting the ball into the hands of Bayley Thomson inside 50 could offer some hope, but they’ll need a four-quarter lift across the board to stem the bleeding.

Sunbury coach Matt White knows his team must continue building momentum.

After three straight first-week finals exits, locking in a top-two finish is the mission—and a strong win here will edge them closer to a crucial double chance.

2024 - Sunbury 13.10.88 d Sebastopol 3.11.29 @ Sunbury

Sebastopol face one of the competition’s toughest challenges this weekend as they head to Clarke Oval—a venue where they’ve never left victorious in 21 attempts.

History certainly favours the home side, with Sunbury holding a dominant record, winning 36 of the 39 encounters between the two clubs.

Sunbury have been nothing short of clinical since their Round 1 loss to Darley, cementing themselves as one of the early premiership threats.

A trademark of their season so far has been their blistering starts—they lead the league for first-quarter dominance and rarely look back once in control.

Their ability to win the football early, maintain possession through clean hands, and transition forward with precision has made them the competition’s top scoring team.

Sebastopol, with just the one win on the board, have shown patches of what they’re capable of—particularly in strong final quarters.

However, their struggles through the second and third terms have consistently left them with too much ground to recover.

To stand any chance of cracking the Clarke Oval curse, the Burra will need to starve the Lions of opportunity.

Both clubs sit in the top three for goal accuracy, making every inside 50 entry all the more dangerous.

For Sebastopol, restricting Sunbury’s forward entries will be key to limiting the scoreboard pressure.

A major focus will be curbing the influence of Jake Sutton, who has been in epic form with 11 goals in the past two games. Expect Tony Lockyer to identify a defensive match-up capable of reducing his impact.

Winning the hard ball and controlling possession will be the Burra’s pathway into the contest—but against one of the league’s most balanced and disciplined outfits, that path won’t come easy.

2024 - Melton 27.14.176 d Bacchus Marsh 7.8.50 @ Bacchus Marsh

Despite their first loss in nearly a year, Melton return to Round 7 with history still largely in their corner.

Their nine-game winning streak against Bacchus Marsh includes an imposing average margin of 55 points.

But this week’s matchup arrives with more edge than the numbers suggest.

The Cobras will still be stinging after a narrow six-point loss to Ballarat.

A victory here wouldn’t just be a major scalp—it could also give them breathing space from North Ballarat, should the Roosters get up over Lake Wendouree.

For Melton, Round 6’s grand final rematch against East Point exposed a rare vulnerability—particularly around the contest.

While the Bloods remain one of the competition’s best ball users and aerial threats, they’ve been beaten in clearances at times, and that’s where the focus must sharpen.

Feeding the forward line—especially Braedan Kight—will be key.

Held to a season-low one goal in the wet last weekend, Kight had been averaging four per game before then.

Expect a strong response from the star forward, particularly on home turf.

For Bacchus Marsh to push for the upset, their third-quarter form needs a turnaround.

They’re yet to win a third term in 2025—a critical period where games are often won or lost.

Ruckman Luke Goetz continues to give them first use at stoppages, but the Cobras must make the most of those centre clearances by delivering clean ball inside 50.

With Sunbury looming next week, Melton can’t afford to let this one slip. For the Cobras, a win could reshape the narrative of their season.

2024 - North Ballarat 21.17.143 d Lake Wendouree 7.6.48 @ North Ballarat

Fresh from breaking their 2025 winless run, North Ballarat now face a golden opportunity to build momentum and edge closer to the top six when they host Lake Wendouree this weekend.

Despite limited recent meetings—just one in each of the past four seasons—history favours the Roosters.

North have claimed the last three contests by margins exceeding ten goals, and with confidence now growing, they’ll be hungry to keep that streak alive.

While both sides boast similar scoring efficiency this year, North’s advantage lies in their higher volume of inside 50s and slightly stronger goal conversion—key indicators that have helped them stay more competitive on the scoreboard.

The return of Cam McCallum in the ruck adds vital experience for the Roosters.

His presence will likely strengthen North Ballarat’s already solid clearance work and sets up an intriguing ruck duel with Lakers big man Tom Zampatti.

For Lake Wendouree to stay in the contest, tackling pressure will be paramount.

While co-captain Joel O’Connell and Kynan Raven have led the way defensively—averaging over 4 tackles per game each—it’ll take a whole-team lift in intensity to match the Roosters’ ball movement and deny them repeat inside 50s.

With an imposing Round 8 clash against Darley on the horizon, this shapes as a must-win game for North Ballarat’s finals aspirations.

For the Lakers, it’s another opportunity to take a step forward and produce a four-quarter performance that can challenge a resurgent Roosters side.

While the 2025 ladder tells one story, the head-to-head record between Darley and Redan adds an interesting view to this Round 7 clash.

The Devils might be one of the competition’s biggest contenders this season, but Redan have historically had their measure—winning more of their recent encounters before Darley’s big win in their last meeting over a year ago.

That said, history may count for little this weekend.

Darley have been electric to start the season. Dan Jordan’s men have set the standard across the board—leading the competition in disposals, clearances and contested possessions.

Combine that with an elite transition game and an ability to suppress teams with defensive pressure, and it's clear why they’re firmly in the premiership conversation.

Redan, meanwhile, have had a mixed bag of results but have shown glimpses of a team on the rise.

Gary Learmonth’s young side will need to dramatically increase their possession rate if they’re to challenge the Devils on their home turf.

Around the ball, they’ve shown patches of efficiency, particularly in clearing from stoppages, but the challenge this week is maintaining that intensity for four quarters against the Devils’ standard.

Taj Bond and Jake Connolly will need to convert whatever forward chances come their way, as opportunities may be limited.

To stay in the contest, the Lions will need a sharp lift in tackling pressure and a defensive mindset that can limit Darley’s precise forward entries.

It’s a big task for Redan—but one that could define how they shape up.

For Darley, it’s another opportunity to show just how big the gap is between them and the chasing pack.

2024 Semi Final - East Point 7.6.48 d Ballarat 5.12.42 @ City Oval

Take away the early 2024 season clash of these two sides and you’re left with some electric, defining matches.

The sides met twice in three weeks at the latter end of the 2024 season.

The first meeting saw Ballarat shock the competition with a Round 18 win over the Roos, re-shaping the finals race.

Two weeks later, in gruelling conditions, East Point returned the favour and ended Ballarat’s fairy tale run.

Both teams enter the clash with momentum after grinding out single digit wins last weekend.

East Point had the edge in clearances – largely thanks to the efforts of Matt Johnston.

Expect Swans coach Ash Baker to have someone lined up to go with him closely.

For Ballarat, Harry Butler will be one to watch. A big-time performer, Butler has delivered against East Point before and remains a huge asset with his versatility around the ground.

Jacob Brown is expected to return for the Roos after a week off, which adds another dimension to Joe Carmody’s selection options.

With finals spots tightening, this is a big one.

A win for East Point gives them some breathing space inside the top four. A Ballarat win? It makes the top six race even tighter.

BFNL Weekend Preview - Round 8, 2023

A top of the table clash is just one of many tasty fixtures coming up in Round 8, with hotly contested top six spots on the line and elusive rare wins up for grabs.

Scoop previews this weekend's action.

  • Melton

  • vs

  • Darley

SATURDAY JUNE 3RD - 2.15PM @ MACPHERSON PARK

Last time they met - Melton 80 def. Darley 50
(MacPherson Park, Round 4 2022)

Unbeaten league heavyweights Melton and Darley face off in a highly anticipated top of the table clash at MacPherson Park.

For all of the Devils’ progression under second year coach Dan Jordan, a timely footy audit awaits against the reigning premiers. Plenty will need to go right for the hunters, Darley, to walk away with the points come 5pm.

In the event of a seventh straight win on the road ahead of the King's Birthday bye, the Devils will have ended a 2226-day winning drought against the Bloods dating back to April 29 Round 2, 2017 and more broadly, a 16-0 winning run at home for Aaron Tymms' men.

While the Bloods current 7-0 season run has a familiar sense of déjà vu, the jury might still be out to see if they're as strong as last year despite similar returns forward from the Carter brothers and the efforts of Brett McIntyre filling the ruck void in the absence of Ben Archard (now returned) and the departed Mark Orr.

The Bloods have proven to be the competition's blueprint for the soldier in, soldier out theory. Today will be no exception with crucial midfielder Jack Walker set to miss with concussion.

Despite the Bloods’ six-year reign, the Devils have rarely been put to the sword, even in more testing times. Needless to say, the Devils’ failings to post a winning score against the Bloods must be corrected if they're to cause an upset win on Saturday.

Finding avenues to goal will go a long way determining the Devils’ fate, with fine weather expected. Sure, the Devils rank one in offence after seven rounds but four of the clubs six wins have come against the bottom four teams who have just three wins between them.

The Bloods will be buoyed with Archard and Kyle Borg back in the mix, but it’s no guarantee that Tymms' all conquering Bloods will have the game weighted on their terms.

The Devils will need midfield duo Brett Bewley and Luther Baker to provide enough drive to challenge the Bloods enviable depth of riches. There is no denying questions will be asked of the Devils’ defence to contain the Bloods’ barometer trio in the Carter brothers and Braedyn Kight but don’t be surprised if there is a cat thrown amongst the pigeons and the flag favorites are knocked off in a close one.

Scoop’s tip: Darley

  • Sunbury

  • vs

  • Redan

SATURDAY JUNE 3RD - 2.15PM @ CLARKE OVAL

Last time they met - Sunbury 63 def. by Redan 76
(Clarke Oval, Round 7 2022)

Sunbury will look to correct on its previous two slow starts, with a 'statement-like' impression in the first quarter when they host Redan.

While there are doubts on the Sunbury Lions matching it with the top few sides without Tyson Lever (foot), Harrison Minton-Connell (Essendon VFL) and Mitch Lewis (Overseas), Redan are well within their sights.

The visitors too will be without some of their top liners as Lachie George and Liam Hoy endure more time on the sidelines with injury. Redan will be sweating on the availability of Footscray VFL affiliated Cooper Craig-Peters with his selection unknown until Friday. Getting it done on the road without their key mid, George and Hoy will be tough assignment despite a seven-point success at Clarke Oval last year.

Evidently, Craig-Peters missed that game but George and Hoy both featured. To give the visitors some comfort, Sunbury did have Lever, Minton-Connell and Lewis but still fell short.

Just what version we're going to get from these two teams will tell its own story in the aftermath. Both seemingly have patches of minimal impact at stages in games and are prone to conceding back-to-back goals, which would be well known to both camps.

Sunbury simply must get it done at home and rebuild their ruthless Clarke Oval reputation, with the venue once considered a fortress. For the present however, only Lake Wendouree, Bacchus Marsh and North Ballarat have failed to win there over the past two seasons with Sebastopol not making the trip down either.

There's a bit at stake here, as both sides fight for a similar spot in the top six.

Scoop's tip: Sunbury

  • North Ballarat

  • vs

  • Melton South

SATURDAY JUNE 3RD - 2.15PM @ MARS STADIUM

Last time they met - North Ballarat 169 def. Melton South 24
(MARS Stadium, Round 17 2022)

You may well expect a similar result to the last time the Roosters met the Panthers at Mars Stadium.

Brendan McCarney's North Ballarat have an opportunity to capitilise on their good doings over the last fortnight that has resulted in the Roosters winning seven of its past eight quarters, including three over flag fancies Sebastopol last week.

If Roosters’ big man Stewart Crameri does indeed play, there's every reason the bona fide key forward will spend a majority of minutes deep inside 50, giving his ailing groin issue some respite.

Cam McCullum and Riley Polkinghorne will enjoy a day out with the latter the likely beneficiary of McCullum's first tap dominance.

Skillful Roosters’ half forward Jamie Quick is every chance to have a big afternoon in front of goal having kicked 17 goals this year to lead the tally for North. While tips on the margin are purely speculative, a mini win for Melton South would be keeping it under 100 points, a feat they haven’t achieved thus far this season.

Scoop’s tip: North Ballarat

  • Sebastopol

  • vs

  • East Point

SATURDAY JUNE 3RD - 2.15PM @ MARTY BUSCH RESERVE

Last time they met - Sebastopol 68 def. East Point 60
(Marty Busch Reserve, Round 13 2022)

The visiting Kangas will endeavour to back up their near upset performance over competition benchmarks Melton last round when they take on Sebastopol at Marty Busch Reserve, but that will be easier said than done for a young group, especially after such a solid, physical hit-out.

Sebastopol are coming off their own disappointment, finishing 30 points short of North Ballarat and will be eager to atone.

Surely the battle for spots in the Burra line-up is as competitive as ever given their depth, as coaching duo Luke Kiel and Michael Columbro look for a combative response validating their first choice. On paper, the Burra read seriously good, loaded with an enviable blend of talented youth and experience, cherry ripe in the premiership window.

However, sides laden with depth can struggle with ownership, leaving it up to others to carry the slack. If that scenario infiltrates a group, they can be suspect to flat performances. The Burra will not want to be flat against a promising East Point that's for sure so expect Kiel and Columbro to get the response they're after and with it, a much needed scalp in the finals mix.

For Merrett's well led young Kangas, they're progressing in the right direction and will continue to ask questions of any opposition. This time, Sebastopol.

Scoop’s tip: Sebastopol

  • Lake Wendouree

  • vs

  • Bacchus Marsh

SATURDAY JUNE 3RD - 2.15PM @ C.E BROWN RESERVE

Last time they met – Bacchus Marsh 72 def. Lake Wendouree 42
(Maddingley Park, Round 11 2022)

The travelling Cobras front their best winning opportunity of the season to date when they meet the one-win Lakers.

Coincidentally, the Cobras’ six games in 2023 have been against the top six teams on the ladder as they stand. The Lakers draw hasn't been full of luxuries either, with four of their six games coming against the top six.

But recent history will account for very little today as both sides eye a prized win and a chance to sing as one in victory come 5pm.

Finding a winner is tough. The Lakers, similar to the Cobras, have very inexperienced 'bottom halves' of their groups and what returns will come of those are likely to have a significant bearing on the result.

For if it were solely based on top-end talent, I would lean to the Cobras with Jake Owen, Jake McCreery, Luke Goetz, Eamonn Ogden and in-form consistent duo Tyson Shea and Jack Parente. I'm not sure the Lakers 'bat' as deep with their top end, but to use a cricketing vernacular their tail may wag a little more favourably the further down the list you go.

Both sides will look the winners at some stage in this contest and be hopeful recent lapses in games are kept to a minimum for the result here could well be decided by which team manufactures the greater number of chances in a game of momentum.

While the winners are set to rejoice and embrace this rare opportunity for victory, contemplation and despair awaits the losers.

BFNL Weekend Preview - Round 8, 2025

It's a big weekend of footy coming ahead of the King's Birthday bye round next week. Round 8 provides the perfect opportunity for teams to head into the break with their tails up and wins on the board.

  • Bacchus Marsh

  • vs

  • Sebastopol

SATURDAY MAY 31ST - 2.15PM @ MADDINGLEY PARK

KEY STATS
All matches:
Bacchus Marsh 41, Sebastopol 44

At Bacchus:
Bacchus Marsh 2021, Sebastopol 2022

Last three matches:
2022 - Sebastopol 11.2.68 d Bacchus Marsh 9.12.66 @ Bacchus Marsh
2023 - Sebastopol 19.24.138 d Bacchus Marsh 2.5.17 @ Sebastopol
2024 - Bacchus Marsh 17.19.121 d Sebastopol 7.7.49 @ Sebastopol

It’s only the fourth meeting at Maddingley Park in seven seasons, but this Round 9 clash carries huge weight for both Sebastopol and Bacchus Marsh as the competition approaches the halfway mark.

Tony Lockyer’s Burra have been encouraging in the midfield numbers—matching the Cobras for disposals, clearances and contested possessions—but have converted that into just one win.

This weekend offers a prime chance to turn stats into wins.

For the Cobras, a finals berth remains close—their first since 2018—but they simply cannot afford slip-ups against fellow contenders.

Wins against teams like Sebastopol are the building blocks of a sustainable finals push.

The ruck duel looms as a telling battle.

Luke Goetz leads the league with the Cobras on an average of 81 hit-outs per game, to the Burra’s 36.

Sebastopol must scramble second-phase contests and make every clearance count to disrupt Goetz’s supply.

Inside 50s will also be critical.

Bacchus Marsh will look to target Jake Owen, while the Burra will aim to feed Cooper Littlehales.

The side that wins the early entries and capitalises on scoring opportunities will have the edge.

A win for Sebastopol could reignite their flag hopes.

For Bacchus Marsh, four points here would provide vital breathing room inside the top six. Expect intensity, stoppage pressure, and a fight for every ball.

Tip:Bacchus Marsh

  • Melton

  • vs

  • Sunbury

SATURDAY MAY 31ST - 2.15PM @ MACPHERSON PARK

KEY STATS
All matches:
Melton 15, Sunbury 42

Last win at Melton:
Melton 2024, Sunbury 2017

Last three matches:
2023 - Melton 13.11.89 d Sunbury 9.8.62 @ Melton
2024 - Melton 8.11.59 d Sunbury 8.7.55 @ Sunbury
2024 - Melton 17.14.116 d Sunbury 5.9.39 @ Melton

With just two rounds left before the midpoint of the season, the stakes are high as third-placed Melton host second-placed Sunbury in what could be a defining clash for the top end of the ladder.

Both sides sit on 24 points, but it's the Lions' mammoth percentage—almost 50% higher than the Bloods—that has them on the edge of top spot.

The last meeting between these two at Macpherson Park saw Melton dismantle the Lions by 77 points.

But with Sunbury riding a six-game winning streak and in elite form, a repeat performance from the reigning premiers won’t come easy.

A key matchup to watch will be the forward shootout between Jake Sutton and Braeden Kight.

Sutton, the league’s equal leading goalkicker in 2025, is averaging nearly four majors a game and looms large as a match-winner.

Kight, on the other hand, was dominant last time these sides met—booting five goals alongside Jordan Kight’s four in a complete forward clinic.

Troy Scoble’s men continue to find plenty of entries inside 50, but their accuracy has left room for improvement.

Against a ruthless Sunbury side who have converted their chances better than anyone in the competition, inefficiency could prove costly.

Finishing strongly will also be vital.

Sunbury leads the league for both points scored and least points conceded in final quarters, while Melton has only managed to win two last terms all season.

If the Bloods find themselves in a tight one late, they'll need to dig deep to hold off the fast-finishing Lions.

Momentum is with Sunbury, but Melton's pedigree in big games can’t be overlooked.

They’ve shown time and again their ability to lift when it matters most.

Expect a finals-like intensity and a game that could reshape the upper tier of the ladder in weeks to come.

Tip:Melton

  • North Ballarat

  • vs

  • Darley

SATURDAY MAY 31ST - 2.15PM @ MARS STADIUM

KEY STATS
All matches:
North Ballarat 15, Darley 18

Last win at North:
North Ballarat 2024, Darley 2019

Last three matches:
2024 - North Ballarat 5.11.41 d Darley 5.8.38 @ North Ballarat
2024 - Darley 9.13.67 d North Ballarat 8.7.55 @ Darley
2024 - Darley 12.15.87 d North Ballarat 6.5.41 @ Darley

The battle of the black and white is a fierce rivalry, the two meeting no fewer than seven times in just the past two years.

And with six of their last 12 encounters decided by 21 points or less, punters can expect another tight battle this weekend.

The Roosters will take confidence from their recent home form against the Devils, winning the past three at Mars Stadium.

With finals now in a much more realistic view and just two points separating them from the top six, this clash looms large for North.

The return of Cam McCallum in the ruck adds crucial experience, especially against Darley’s rising star Lucas Impey, who is averaging 55 hit outs per game.

North’s ability to win clearances should only be strengthened by McCallum’s presence, while Denver Grainger-Barras’ move forward could be a game changer, with a five-goal haul last week showcasing his influence.

Accuracy will be key—Darley have set the benchmark in front of goal this season, and the Roosters must take full advantage of their opportunities.

Statistically, both sides are even in inside 50s, but Darley have been far more effective on the scoreboard.

Dan Jordan’s Devils remain the competition's most dominant outfit across multiple categories—loose ball gets, contested possessions, and overall efficiency.

The midfield pairing of Nick Hind and Brett Bewley continues to control games with an average of over 36 disposals each per week.

North Ballarat will need to bring both intensity and composure to break through Darley’s defensive structures.

But with momentum on their side, a win here could be their biggest statement yet.

For Darley, it really is a crucial match — with East Point and Sunbury to come, banking four points here could prove pivotal in shaping the top two.

Tip: Darley

  • Redan

  • vs

  • Ballarat

SATURDAY MAY 31ST - 2.15PM @ CITY OVAL

KEY STATS
All matches:
Redan 88, Ballarat 108, drawn 3

Last ten matches:
Redan 5, Ballarat 5

Last three matches:
2023 - Ballarat 13.5.83 d Redan 9.10.64 @ Ballarat
2024 - Ballarat 13.12.90 d Redan 13.9.87 @ Ballarat
2024 - Ballarat 16.13.109 d Redan 5.10.40 @ Redan

This weekend marks the 200th time Ballarat and Redan will square off—a rivalry that dates all the way back to 1942.

Redan held the upper hand in recent history, winning 10 of 11 matchups between 2015 and 2021, but momentum has shifted since.

Ballarat have claimed five of the past six clashes, including their most recent meeting.

This one, though, feels like it could go either way—with both sides firmly in the hunt for a finals berth.

Despite sitting second last on the ladder, Redan are just a couple of wins outside the top six.

A victory here, followed by a winnable clash with Lake Wendouree next week, could see the Lions suddenly right back in contention.

Meanwhile, Ballarat are only four points clear of North Ballarat but sit behind them in percentage, making a win this weekend just as crucial to keep their finals hopes alive.

The Swans will be boosted by the return of midfielder Paddy Simpson, whose average of 20 disposals and six score involvements per game will be a huge benefit.

For Redan, the inclusion of Lachlan George in recent weeks has brought a much-needed dose of experience, helping steady a team hit hard by injury earlier in the season.

The match-up could hinge on two key areas: how the game starts, and how it ends.

Ballarat have won the opening term just once in 2025.

If Redan can replicate their fast starts from early in the year, they could put the Swans on the back foot quickly.

But the Lions have struggled to finish games off, still without a final quarter win this season.

Ballarat’s ability to run out games could prove decisive.

In a milestone clash with major ladder implications, expect a hard-fought contest in a rivalry 200 games deep.

Tip:Redan

  • East Point

  • vs

  • Lake Wendouree

SATURDAY MAY 31ST - 2.15PM @ EASTERN OVAL

KEY STATS
All matches:
East Point 23, Lake Wendouree 16

Last win at Eastern:
East Point 2024, Lake Wendouree 2017

Last three matches:
2023 - East Point 22.13.145 d Lake Wendouree 3.5.23 @ Lake Wendouree
2024 - East Point 17.17.119 d Lake Wendouree 8.6.54 @ Lake Wendouree
2024 - East Point 27.13.175 d Lake Wendouree 2.8.20 @ East Point

With the top four sides locked on 24 points, percentage is a hot topic of the finals conversation.

Currently sitting fourth with the lowest percentage of the bunch, the Roos will be eyeing both four points and a significant boost when they host winless Lake Wendouree this weekend.

Last time these two met at Eastern Oval, East Point put on a clinic.

Replicating that performance could be essential, especially with a heavyweight clash against ladder-leaders Darley after the break.

Anything less than a big win here could see them lose grip on a top-three spot by the halfway point of the season.

For the Lakers, while the wins column remains empty, it’s all about development and setting measurable goals.

These matchups against elite opposition offer valuable benchmarks—and a chance for some of their consistent contributors to test themselves at the highest level.

Joel O’Connell will likely draw the challenge of limiting Micka Rotumah-Onus, who has been near unstoppable through the midfield.

Angus Gove, a standout in defence, faces a different but equally tough assignment: keeping Jordan Johnston and other key Roos forwards from dominating the scoreboard.

In the ruck, Tom Zampatti has proven he can win the hit outs.

The next step for the Lakers is turning those into meaningful clearances and momentum—something East Point’s Joel Van Meel and Ryder Lavery have made a habit of doing with composure and consistency.

With dry conditions forecast, the Lakers must lift their tackling pressure and find a way to slow down East Point’s ball movement.

If the Roos are allowed to transition freely from contest to attack, it could be a long day for the visitors.

For East Point, it’s clear: get the points, boost the percentage, and keep their top-three hopes on track.

BFNL Weekend Preview - Round 9, 2023

After the bye weekend the action is back this Saturday with a number of tantalising contests set to be on display across the competition.

Scoop looks ahead to the Round 9 schedule.

  • Melton South

SATURDAY JUNE 17TH - 2.15PM @ MADDINGLEY PARK

Last time they met – Melton South 35 def. by Bacchus Marsh 67 (Melton Recreation Reserve, Round 13 2022)

Expect the Cobras to make it back-to-back wins when they host the struggling Panthers.

The club is hopeful Cobra fans will turn out in large numbers to witness their second win of the season coinciding with their annual "Fight the Beast" MND Fundraiser where a selected group of Cobra faithful take the plunge down the slide into the icy waters below for the worthy cause.

Despite the Cobras one win season to date, new coach Jason Williams has been relatively pleased with the effort of his under manned group for the most part, giving every indication a big win against the Panthers is on the cards.

If the Cobras midfield can get on top of the visitors early, former Captain Jake Owen can look forward to a big day in front of the sticks.

Any returns for the home side from the AFL's Under 18 pathway competition will only make the Panthers task more difficult as they strive for a first loss of the season under 100 points.

Scoop’s tip: Bacchus Marsh

  • Lake Wendouree

SATURDAY JUNE 17TH - 2.15PM @ EASTERN OVAL

Last time they met – Lake Wendouree 90 def. by East Point 117
(CE Brown Reserve, Round 16 2022)

Seventh placed East Point must win and win well when they host the Lakers.

While Jackson Merrett's boys are knocking on the door of the top six, they sit two games and another 34% behind the fifth placed side in Sunbury. East Point will be hopeful a win will be enough to replace sixth placed Redan who face a testing meet with Sebastopol.

Given the departure of Lakers’ coach Jack Fitzpatrick last week, history says a spike in effort more often follows from the playing group, eager to impress off a fresh start.

Merrett will be hoping to put this game to bed early and deny the one-win Lakers any momentum. For the longer the Lakers remain in the game, the less percentage gain the dangerous Kangas will accumulate.

While the likely match result will not surprise, it will be the nature of the projected Kangas win that will attract the greatest attention.

Scoop’s tip: East Point

  • North Ballarat

  • vs

  • Darley

SATURDAY JUNE 17TH - 2.15PM @ MARS STADIUM

Last time they met - Darley 100 def. North Ballarat 82
(Darley Park, Round 18 2022)

Despite the Devils’ impressive 7-0 run on the road, this match-up looms just as much a danger game for the ladder leaders as it does the hosts.

The Roosters win/loss record under Brendan McCartney at Mars Stadium sits at 14-3, giving every indication a 15th win would not surprise, with their chances set to be buoyed by the likely return of marquee signing Stewart Crameri from injury.

And, when you consider the potential influence of Werribee VFL listed Jack Riding and current BFNL leading goalkicker Jamie Quick (25 goals) forward of centre, the Roosters pose a real handful.

Furthermore, Dan Jordan's boys will have to be at their best around the coal face denying in-form midfield duo Cam McCullum and Riley Polkinghorne first use out of stoppage. The visitors will be without heart and soul inside mid, Luther Baker (hamstring), and will count on an impact contribution from their promoted soldier.

The contest between two of the more astute operators off field with the magnets could also play a role in the outcome. McCartney and Jordan similarly prefer process over match ups - just who gets it done, a game on their terms for longer will surely earn the four points.

The Devils, led by Brett Bewley, Billy Myers, Matthew Brett and Shane Page, have done everything right thus far but something tells me, this game in particular, they're cherry ripe for the taking.

Scoop’s tip: North Ballarat

  • Ballarat

  • vs

  • Sunbury

SATURDAY JUNE 17TH - 2.15PM @ ALFREDTON OVAL

Last time they met - Ballarat 112 def. Sunbury 76
(Alfredton Oval, Round 17 2022)

League improvers Sunbury will be looking to consolidate their place in the top six with a win on the road over Ballarat.

Sure, they'll have to do it without their Captain Tyson Lever and midfielder Mitch Lewis but you're likely to find nearly all sides are shy of their best 22 with the season eight rounds in.

While experienced Swans forward Andrew Hooper (22 goals) poses the Lions greatest threat causing an upset on the goal front, the visitors seemingly hold the aces covering the former Western Bulldog.

Lions’ trio Jake Sutton (17 goals), Cody Brand (14 goals) and ageless go-to-man Leigh Brennan (10 goals) provide enough spread in the front half getting it done on the scoreboard even if Hooper has his way.

Lions’ newcomers Josiah Garisto, RIvva Karpany and Brand are beginning to gel with their team mates and will continue to build on that synergy into the second half of the season.

An all important sixth win beckons for the Lions who will look to start well having trailed at the half in their previous three games (Redan, Bacchus Marsh, Darley).

Sunbury aside, Saturday provides a young Ballarat outfit with another opportunity to ply their trade under coach Chris Maple with an eye on staying in games for longer.

Sunbury will be stiff opposition and are set to start warm favorites to make it a hattrick of wins ahead of another road trip and tougher assignment against Sebastopol in Round 10.

Scoop’s tip: Sunbury

  • Redan

  • vs

  • Sebastopol

SATURDAY JUNE 17TH - 2.15PM @ CITY OVAL

Last time they met - Redan 35 def. by Sebastopol 87
(City Oval, Round 12 2022)

Redan host Sebastopol in an all-important game as both sides aim to keep the wolves from the door. The Lions cling to sixth place on the BFNL table ahead of East Point, who are knocking, while the Burra aim to stay in touch with the top two.

If Sebastopol are fair dinkum and play to their strengths, they should be too good for Redan despite some genuine resistance in Jarrett Giampaolo's milestone 250th game (Congratulations!).

Again, the Lions will have to sweat on the VFL selections of Cooper Craig Peters (Footscray) and Will Madden (Essendon) and have their fingers crossed on whether crucial mid Lachie George is ready to make a return.

Veteran Liam Hoy will miss again. In a nutshell, the Lions fall shy on experience and polish in the absence of the aforementioned to sway an upset result.

For the Burra, they’ll be seeking to broaden their avenues to goal. Hugo Papst (14 goals) has been a real find hitting the scoreboard in a support role for Toby Hutt (20 goals). Too often, Tony Lockyer (8 goals) is the Burras saving grace at either end. What a player. You wouldn't think eight rounds in only Papst and Hutt have kicked more goals.

Despite having played all bottom four sides (4 wins between them), the Burra rank 5th for shots on goal and the same for points scored despite their #1 ranking for goal accuracy.

Clearly, they remain a work in progress, which is a dangerous thought for the remainder of the competition.

BFNL Weekend Preview - Round 9, 2024

After a weekend off, coaches, players and fans alike will all be hungry to get stuck back into the action this Saturday.

  • Lake Wendouree

  • vs

  • Melton South

SATURDAY JUNE 15TH - 2.15PM @ CE BROWN RESERVE

- BFNL MATCH OF THE ROUND LIVE WITH FULL COMMENTARY 2PM VIA BFNL MATCH CENTRE -

Last time they met - Melton South 60 def. by Lake Wendouree 162 (Melton Recreation Reserve, Round 5 2023)

To suggest both sides need a win is an understatement.

For the Lakers, Saturday will mark 400 days since their las win, albeit a 102-point routing of the Panthers who will hit 100 weeks since their last on field success, a six-point win over the Lakers in their corresponding Round 9 fixture way back in 2022.

For one relieved outfit, the run of outs ends this weekend.

With all respect to Travis Hodgson and the Panthers, they're not in the same conversation as the Lakers despite sharing the same 'zero win' season to date.

The Lakers can boast mini wins, equating to four winning quarters from their 32, the Panthers are 0/28.

While scoring and defending has been a struggle for both sides, it's the Lakers who hold the advantage averaging 21 points MORE per game.

There's a similar pattern on the defensive front with Lakers conceding 33 points on average LESS than the Panthers.

Here's hoping the BFNL's Match of the Round is full of goals and game defining moments - enough for one team at least to savour in celebration and song.

It's all about making the most of an opportunity that beckons for these two sides in front of a keen viewing audience. Given the current landscape, who knows when the next victory salute will come.

For The Record
Despite ranking 3rd (Lakers) and 4th (Panthers) for average hitouts per game, it does not correlate to other aerial gains with the clubs ranking 10th and #11th in the competition for contested marks and intercept marks.

Lakers’ utility Bailey Thompson has 16 (comp rank #10) of the Lakers’ 54 season goals (30 %).

SATURDAY JUNE 15TH - 2.15PM @ CITY OVAL

Last time they met - Redan 78 def. by East Point 115 (City Oval, Round 12 2023)

It felt all clubs welcomed the Kings Birthday break, but if there was one I had to nominate as a possible exception, it would most certainly be East Point.

Since the Kangas’ bye in Round 2 they've won six games on the trot inflicting Melton and Sunbury with their only losses on the way.

Over the period Joe Carmody's Kangas have averaged near 114 points per game, conceding just 50.5 (avg per game) in the process.

If Gary Learmonth's Redan were looking for flaws in the Kangas camp, maybe something as simple as a break in continuity for the Kangas could provide an edge, especially early.

If the Lions could in fact get the jump, momentum can do wonderous things, especially for a young group that has double figure representation from their Under 19 and Under 17 stocks.

On the flipside I fear for a young Lions group the break has invigorated the Kangas even further.

Their best is very good.

We've known that at the coal face and forward of the ball for a while, but the assurance found now behind the ball in the name of Jacob Brown and Jackson Merrett gives a new look for the Kangas despite their familiarity and experience.

Bryson McDougall, Strahan Robinson and Jack Jeffrey make up just part of the problems that lie ahead for the Lions given the Johnston brothers, Mickitja Rottumah-Onus and Joe Dodd's form through the midfield.

Needless to add, all are goalkicking mids (27 goals combined).

Learmonth will look for further progress from his young group as another timely footy audit presents in the name of East Point.

Excited for the potential debut of star recruit Lachie Bond (foot) who has not been seen since his four goal highlights reel against Drysdale in a pre-season practice match.

Lachie McLean (knee) who hasn't played all season is also in the mix for a return in a possible double boost for the Lions.

For The Record
While East Point rank #1 for average clearances per game (Redan #8) and #2 for contested ball (Redan #10), Lions midfielder Khy Jess is currently the #1 ranked player in the BFNL for (avg) contested possessions (22 per game).

SATURDAY JUNE 15TH - 2.15PM @ MARS STADIUM

Last time they met - North Ballarat 79 def. Ballarat 40 (Mars Stadium, Round 12 2023)

If Chris Maple's young Swans have any aspirations toppling North Ballarat at Mars Stadium, a good start hitting the scoreboard will be paramount.

The hosts have won 21/25 games at the venue since Brendan McCartney took over in 2021.

Ironically Ballarat (2022) was one of those four sides over the journey to upset the narrative, but it will be a much younger Swans outfit endeavouring to upset the winning trend of the Roosters (at home) and the pattern of conviction that comes with it.

Just scoring against the miserly North Ballarat defence has been a struggle for all opponents at Mars Stadium.

Since the start of 2023 the Roosters are 10 wins, two losses, conceding an average just shy of 48 points per game.

Given the cooler conditions forecasted, expect goals, especially for the visitors to come at a premium.

Clearly an improvement on the Swans effort here last year will earmark the bare minimum of expectation, no doubt the experienced Maple won't be beaten on what he already learnt here last year.

The Swans did lead at quarter time on that occasion and were within four points at the half.

The old 'better for longer' adage could not have been more fitting in the aftermath as McCartney's army extended after the break booting seven goals to two.

In the here and now, can the Swans marking game unsettle North Ballarat who are so accountable behind the ball?

The Swans will want to ensure their link up by foot is in order to find a way through especially in the absence of Rhett Montgomery (SANFL).

The Swans are not without a prizefighter’s chance, but I expect the pressure from the hosts at the coalface to prove the overwhelming difference.

The Roosters still have a few important cogs to return - namely Jamie Quick and Simon McCartin. Their presence only enhances the Roosters 'warm favorites' tag.

For The Record
Ballarat rank #1 for average marks per game (103), North Ballarat 10th (67). On the flipside North Ballarat rank #2 for clearances (48.3), Ballarat 7th (42.9)

  • Sebastopol

SATURDAY JUNE 15TH - 2.15PM @ CLARKE OVAL

Last time they met - Sebastopol 87 def. Sunbury 60 (Marty Busch Reserve, Round 10 2023)

The King’s Birthday break was timely for these two sides amid a climbing injury toll ahead of their Round 9 clash at the Clarke Oval.

While the Burras’ on field woes, largely beyond their control, has attracted varying degrees of scrutiny, Sunbury copped some misfortune of their own with injuries to Mitch Lewis, Jake Egan, Nathan Doyle and earlier, season ending ACL tear for Tom Scanlon.

Ben Cameron (Coburg) and Harry Minton-Connell (Williamstown) remain in the VFL.

The loss of personnel surely played a role in the Lions’ first loss of the season on the road against the Kangas in Round 8.

Needless to add, Matty White's group was gallant in defeat despite trailing at every change.

Conceding periods of four and five goals in succession really was the difference.

Just what resemblance of each side’s best 22 we see on Saturday will surely play its own part but given the depth of the Lions and season returns of the Burra to date on the win/loss front, it's hard to entertain a conversation in the 'upset' camp.

But that notion will account for very little to Burra leader Tony Lockyer who is fully aware of where his team is at.

You have to admire the popular veteran having made little reference to the changes in personnel, that has clearly impacted the recent perennial finalists.

Sebastopol will arrive in Sunbury with every intention of winning, despite its unlikelihood.

Darley coach Dan Jordan gave the Burra some encouragement after the Devils’ 19-point win in Round 8 suggesting Lockyer's group will test, if not upset a few sides on the way home.

For Matthew White's Sunbury, it will be all about maintaining their good habits that led them to a promising 6-1 start to the season ahead of a Round 10 blockbuster against Melton.

Special mention to Lions’ forward Mitch McLean who is having a breakout season. His 24 goals to date (comp rank #4) has been complemented with 20 forward 50 tackles (Comp rank #1).

For The Record
Sunbury rank 1st for Handballs (152.7 avg per game), Sebastopol 6th (128.6). Sebastopol rank 3rd (13.4) for Back 50 tackles, Sunbury 10th (8)

SATURDAY JUNE 15TH - 2.15PM @ MACPHERSON PARK

Last time they met - Bacchus Marsh 54 def. by Melton 93 (Maddingley Park, Round 12 2023)

Flag favorites Melton will look to consolidate their recent run of good form with a win over Bacchus Marsh at MacPhersons Park.

Call this bout an entree for the Bloods ahead of their top of the table clash on the road to Sunbury in Round 10 - a chance to regroup and fine tune after the week off.

Dennis Armfield's touring Cobras will have had a fortnight to identify and plan for their toughest assignment to date. So where do you start?

Sure, Braedan Kight's 41 goals (7 games) fits the 'concern' criteria.

The Bloods’ captain is averaging a goal every 3.5 disposals in 2024 which is truly remarkable for a 16 disposal player. The damage is not limited there either from the x-factor talent.

While Kight is shy of six feet in height, he leads the competition for marks inside 50 (5.1 avg per game), goal involvements (7.9) and ranks 6th for score involvements (9.9).

At the other end you have a dominant Bloods’ back six led by Jordy Cotter who ranks #1 at the club for kicks, efficiency by foot, marks, intercept marks and intercept possessions.

Only Sunbury's Tyson Lever has taken more intercept marks than Cotter. Keeping the ball away from him despite a clear message will be easier said than done.

The Cobras will need a 'spike' in most areas to compete against the relentless Bloods.

Jake Owen's importance is not capped by his contested marking ability alone (Comp rank #2). The star forward ranks #7 in the comp for both goal involvements (6.3 per game) and score involvements (9.6) - worthy of a bona fide match up from the Scoble camp.

Ruckman Luke Goetz leads the Cobras clearly for intercept marks ahead of defenders Jack Parente, Simon La Franchi and Collingwood VFL listed recruit Rye Penny.

Expect the Cobras, like all other BFNL sides to be stretched in the air and at ground level against the competition yardstick and be made to pay on the scoreboard for their inefficiencies.

For The Record
Melton rank #1 for tackles (69.7 avg per game) and Forward 50 tackles (16.3), Bacchus Marsh 9th (59.7) and 8th (10) respectively. The Cobras rank #2 (16.6 avg per game) for contested marks with a slender advantage over the Bloods 5th (13.4).

BFNL Weekend Preview - Round 9, 2025

As we approach the offical halfway mark of the home and away season, each club will have faced one another once to complete the league circuit.

With plenty of valuable wins on the board in Round 9, there will be eyeballs everywhere across the league awaiting results.

2024 Preliminary Final - East Point 11.14.80 d Darley 10.13.73 @ Sebastopol

It was nothing short of an epic battle the last time these two sides met.

With a grand final berth on the line, East Point and Darley went toe-to-toe into overtime at Marty Busch Reserve.

It was the Kangaroos who emerged victorious, advancing to their third grand final in five full seasons.

But as we approach the halfway mark of 2025, it’s the Devils who come in as favourites for this cracking Round 9 clash.

While the overall head-to-head between the two is relatively even, a strong trend has emerged — home ground dominance.

Since 2018, these clubs have played ten home-and-away fixtures against each other.

Only one of those games has been won by the away team, with Darley boasting a perfect 4-0 record at home and East Point 5-1 on their turf.

Statistically, the two sides are well matched, though Darley edge ahead slightly in most key areas.

Accuracy in front of goal has been a major weapon for the Devils, while East Point trail — coming off an 18.23 scoreline in Round 8.

That conversion rate must tighten if they want to get a win on the road.

The Roos will be boosted by the return of Matt Johnston and Joe Dodd — two crafty ball users through the midfield — while Darley welcome back the Adam Azzopardi.

Roos defenders Liam Howard and Sam Cue will need to rise to the occasion to stem the Devils’ forward 50 entries.

At the other end, Darley’s Billy Myers has been the general down back all season, a key part of the league’s stingiest defence.

Forwards Bryson McDougall and Jordan Johnston will need to make the most of every chance that comes their way.

With top-two spots on the line, this shapes as a defining moment in the 2025 season.

It’s been more than a decade since East Point last claimed a win on Darley’s home deck — will history be re-written this weekend?

2023 - Melton 22.15.147 d Ballarat 3.8.26 @ Melton
2024 - Melton 15.6.96 d Ballarat 3.8.26 @ Melton

As with all clashes in Round 9, the Ballarat and Melton matchup highlights just how vital four points are at this point in the season.

For the Bloods, a win secures a top-two position at the halfway mark.

A loss, however, could see them slip as low as fourth in what’s shaping up to be one of the tightest ladders in recent memory.

The Swans currently sit six points clear of sixth-placed Redan, but with injuries piling up and the lowest percentage among the top eight, a loss here could make their second half of the season a serious uphill battle.

Melton has certainly had the upper hand in this rivalry in recent years, winning nine of the past ten encounters.

That said, these sides have only met twice at Alfredton Recreation Reserve since 2019 — with Ballarat winning in 2019 and Melton returning the favour in 2022.

If Ballarat wants to challenge the Bloods, they’ll need to capitalise on their inside 50 entries.

On average, Melton are +10 in that area — a stat that has helped them control games and build scoreboard pressure.

But if there's one area Troy Scoble’s group can target, it’s Melton’s conversion: the Bloods have recorded more points than goals this season, leaving the door ajar for opposition.

Ballarat will unveil an exciting debutant in 16-year-old Emerton Hooper.

His selection is a testament to the strength of the club’s development pathways and the trust they’re placing in their next generation.

Melton, meanwhile, remains largely unchanged, with the only notable omission being Ryan Carter, unavailable due to interstate commitments.

With opportunity knocking for both sides, it’s a massive test for Ballarat’s young and injury-hit outfit — and a chance for Melton to cement their premiership credentials on the road.

2024 - Sunbury 15.10.100 d Bacchus Marsh 13.9.87 @ Sunbury

There’s plenty on the line in this clash — and not just the four points.

Sunbury sit fourth on the ladder heading into the halfway mark of the season. A win could see them jump into the top two, while a loss wouldn’t knock them out of the four, but it would make a top-three finish much tougher to lock in.

For Bacchus Marsh, a win keeps their finals hopes well and truly alive.

But depending on other Round 9 results, a loss could see them slip out of the six — and suddenly in need of a few upsets in the back half of the year.

Clarke Oval has long been a tough hunting ground for the Cobras, with just three wins there — 2015, 2018, and 2023.

History suggests they’ll need to be at their best to break through once again.

For that to happen, a strong first half is essential.

Sunbury have been the most damaging side offensively this season, leading the league in total scores — thanks largely to the forward trio of Jake Sutton, Daniel Johnston, and Jake Egan.

Slowing their influence will be critical, with Tarkyn Findlay likely handed a key shutdown role.

While Bacchus Marsh have consistently finished games strong, their third quarters have been their Achilles heel.

With the Lions’ ability to score quickly and in bursts, Dennis Armfield’s group will need a complete four-quarter performance to challenge them.

If the Cobras can bring their trademark tackling pressure and disrupt Sunbury’s quick ball movement, they’ll be in with a shot.

But if the Lions bring the same consistent brand they’ve shown so far in 2025, they’ll be hard to stop on home turf.

2024 - North Ballarat 20.14.134 d Sebastopol 4.4.28 @ North Ballarat

It’s essentially a must-win for both teams at Marty Busch this weekend.

With just two wins apiece so far, both Clint Proctor and Tony Lockyer would have hoped for more from the opening half of the season.

But despite slow starts, both sides remain in the hunt for finals — and this clash will go a long way to deciding who stays in the race.

Thanks to a stronger percentage, North Ballarat sits just two points outside the six.

A win here could see them leapfrog into a finals position by weekend’s end.

For the Burra, their Round 8 win over Bacchus Marsh has breathed new life into their campaign, and with the gap to sixth spot only four points, it’s games like these that become critical in the chase.

Since the beginning of 2019, Sebastopol has had the edge in this match-up, winning five of their last eight encounters.

They’ve only hosted the Roosters twice at Marty Busch Reserve in that period — both ending in wins for the home side.

The Roosters will be forced to shuffle the magnets with Cam McCallum sidelined through injury.

Expect Ryan Luke to rotate through the middle more frequently, with his support ruck work sure to test Burra big man Liam Stow.

With Lockyer back in the line-up for Sebastopol, centre bounce contests and stoppage clearances should tighten right up.

While neither side boasts a dominant goalkicker, both have benefitted from a healthy spread of contributors up forward.

That makes defensive organisation all the more important, both back six units will need to be switched on, covering all avenues to goal.

Expect intercept marking and team defence structures — like pressing high and zoning back — to be key for both outfits in what could be a low-scoring grind.

With finals on the line and momentum up for grabs, this one looms as a classic scrap between two sides with plenty to prove.

2024 - Lake Wendouree 17.8.110 d Redan 13.15.93 @ Lake Wendouree

Wins have been hard to come by for both teams this season — both showing glimpses of well-executed, finals-worthy football, but neither able to convert consistently.

Redan has had the edge in recent history, winning four of their last five and six of their past nine encounters with the Lakers.

However, last season told a different story — each side claimed a narrow win on their home turf, proving there's not much separating them when they bring their best.

Injury has continued to plague the Lions, with coach Gary Learmonth digging deep into the club's youth stocks to fill key roles.

It's created opportunity but has also tested Redan’s depth week in and week out.

For Rohan Brown and the Lakers, success this season isn’t solely defined by wins — but on paper, this is one of their best chances to bank four points.

At close to full strength, and facing a depleted Redan outfit sitting just one rung above them on the ladder, Lake Wendouree will need to leave nothing in the tank.

Winning the clearances is step one, but for the Lakers, they simply need to generate more forward entries.

Angus Gove has done plenty of work rebounding out of the backline, but it’ll be the likes of Will Clark and Kynan Raven that need to impact the other end by delivering the ball inside 50 with purpose.

For the Lions, winning the contested footy will be crucial — an area where Jake Connolly and Brody Pope have led the charge this year.

Redan have managed to get the ball inside 50 consistently enough, but it’s conversion that’s let them down.

Accuracy in front of goal will be a major focus if they’re to take control of this one.

With both clubs desperate for a win, expect a spirited clash between two proud sides.

BFNL Weekend Review - Netball Week 1 Finals, 2025

An enthralling first week of A Grade finals raised eyebrows across the courts. From heavy-weight battles, dominant wins and upset victories, the weekend's action had it all.

North Ballarat have reminded the BFNL’s premier netball competition that they’re here to go all the way.

Annie McCartin’s Roosters produced a commanding win over the Cobras, extending their lead at every break and proving once again their ability to perform in finals.

With Poppy Douglas returning from overseas on Saturday, youngster Georgia Bodey earned the starting GA bib and more than rose to the occasion.

With goal shooter Maddy Selmon the main target under the post this season, Bodey added a new look to North’s goal ring — shooting 13 from 14 in the first half alongside Selmon’s 14 from 16.

Nichole Gleeson kept her side unchanged through the first half, letting them settle into their first finals appearance in six years.

But trailing by 12 at the main break, she made a series of changes heading into the third and throughout the second half.

Lauren Shankland, part of the winless Cobras line-up last season, was injected into wing attack, while Eliza Moodie shifted from goal defence to goal attack to take some pressure off youngster Jasmine Paama.

McCartin made changes of her own, showing the depth of the Roosters’ line-up.

Douglas slotted into goal attack, feeding Selmon as she has for much of the season, while Stacey Matthews brought fresh legs and plenty of finals experience at wing attack.

By three-quarter time, the margin had stretched to 20.

All Bacchus Marsh could do in the last was fight it out, and to their credit they did.

Kimberley Phillips became a target under the post, opened up by Paama’s movement, and the Cobras managed to take the final term 13–12.

While the season ends here for Bacchus Marsh, making finals probably feels like a win in itself — a sign of what hard work and club culture can build.

North Ballarat, meanwhile, turn their focus to Sunbury as they look to lock in a spot in the 2025 A Grade Grand Final.

If there was a team capable of writing the fairy tale of sixth beating third, we said it would be Lake Wendouree. And on Saturday at Maddingley Park, they did exactly that.

A commanding start from the Lakers was all it took to book their spot in this weekend’s Semi Final 1.

Led by defenders Kate Drew (GK) and Remi Hooper (GD), the Lakers capitalised early, feeding young shooters Ade Funcke (GS) and Ebony Porter (GA), who converted 11 of 16 attempts to Redan’s 6 from 9.

The Lions looked to shift momentum in the second quarter with the injection of recruit Tahlia Thompson into GA.

She made an immediate impact, shooting 6 from 8.

But Courtney McLean’s Lakers had a response of their own, calling on the experience of Mel Allen at GS, who steadied with 4 from 5.

Trailing by four at half-time, Redan threw everything at the contest through the midcourt.

Lily Francis and Sadie Cheeseman fought hard through the centre position, while defenders Erin Riley (GK) and coach Ash Smith (GD) started to generate turnovers in the Lakers’ attack.

The Lions dominated possession, producing 15 scoring shots to the Lakers’ 9, but Allen and Porter were clinical, finishing the quarter at a flawless 100%.

With just two goals in it heading into the last, the game was there for the taking.

Redan clawed back the lead late and looked set to spoil the fairy tale.

But the composure and relentless defence of Lake Wendouree came to the fore, just as it had in the first quarter, sealing the win by a single goal.

The Lakers now continue their dream run as they prepare to face Darley in Semi Final 1 on Sunday.

The qualifying final between Sunbury and Darley could well have been a Grand Final preview.

With the two sides boasting more players than any other team with high-level netball experience, the scoreline reflected the class of netball on display.

Sunbury wasted no time on their journey to back-to-back flags, finding competition leading goal scorer Becca Hicks under the ring, missing not a single shot in the opening term.

Down the other end, Sunbury’s Elly Randall (GK) and Eliza Gollant (GD) were able to double team Darley’s Liv Cawthray (GS) and limit the feeds to the dominate shooter.

However, captain Mon Nagle (GA) lead from the front, providing another scoring option in the goaling ring for her side.

Whilst Shannon Blackman’s side remined unchanged heading into the second term trailing by one, Kim Bailey experimented with the wing defence position across the opening half, seeing who out of Georgia Hellyer, Sarah Croft and Abigail Inglis could provide a shutdown of the speedy Lucy Taylor (WA) and provide connection in transition.

Darley’s reliable duo Anna Lawley (GD) and Matilda Elliott (GK) were able to limit the Sunbury’s feeds to Hicks in the second quarter, covering the high ball beautifully.

Similar to the Devils, it was goal attack Caitlin Hill who then provided the go to option, contributing 7 goals from 9 attempts.

With both Blackman and Bailey having done their homework on how one another’s sides play, changes at the main break were made by both teams.

For the Lions, Croft came into the centre to limit Blackman’s influence and Tayla Honey was moved to wing defence. For the Devils, Ailish McCormack entered the game into wing attack and Lucy Taylor was given the task of combating reigning dual Sally McLean medallist Simona Di Fillipo.

The game started to drift in the hands of Sunbury, extending their lead throughout the third term.

Darley responded though, bringing McCormack into the goal ring, and Jaime Smith back into wing defence.

They clawed the game back to trail by three heading into the last.

As the final quarter progressed, Sunbury extended their lead out to as much as six goals.

But the relentless pressure from the Devils and perhaps complacency from the Lions saw back-to-back turnover through attack.

The Devils capitalised and brought the score back within one.

However, it took one turnover for the Lions to find their rhythm again and remain composed and in control to take a three-goal win.

Darley will now face Lake Wendouree to keep their finals hopes alive, with Sunbury set to take on North Ballarat after Redan’s shock exit.
