INSIDER: Firstly, welcome to the BFNL, what do you know about the competition?

RYE PENNY:Not too much. I went to Bacchus Marsh Grammar and heard a bit about it there, but I expect it to be similar to the Bendigo League.

INSIDER: You're a Collingwood VFL listed player formerly aligned with Gisborne, how did u end up at the Cobras?

RP:Well I have mates here from my school days and Dennis' appointment pretty much got me over the line given he's great mates with Josh Fraser (Collingwood VFL Coach).

INSIDER: Tell us about your experience thus far at Collingwood, are you in the mix for regular selection?

RP:I've played four games as a 23rd man for the Pies and loved it. Selection is tough this year, only five or six listed VFL players are getting an opportunity each week. I'll just have to wait for my opportunity and hopefully I can take it.

INSIDER: The club signed Dennis Armfield to coach the Cobras - tell us about him?

RP:Dennis has been awesome. I've had heaps of coaches over the last few years and for some reason it feels he's a level above. Dennis is really passionate about the club with an emphasis on wanting to make people better.

INSIDER: Name two top priorities the Cobras need to return to finals?

RP:1. Persevere with youth involvement, there is plenty of talent around here. 2. Aggression, will compete.

INSIDER: Who is your harshest footy critic?

RP:Mum! If I don't have 40 possessions and take a couple of hangers, she is in to me!

INSIDER: What other sport could you play at a high level if there were no footy?

RP:Volleyball (played in National league)

INSIDER: In a freakish sense, which player at the club can do things on-field that others can't?

RP:Luke Goetz

INSIDER: Who at the club has the most upside from a junior perspective?

RP:Jack Kovacevic

INSIDER: Who is your favorite footy person at the club?

RP:Shannon Nixon

INSIDER: What's your favorite TV series or Movie at the moment?

RP:Not enough time for that stuff really, I didn't mind the Avatar movies.

INSIDER: Apart from your phone, what can't you leave home without?

RP:Four pairs of clothes because I never really know where I’m going to end up!

INSIDER: Which player would be the last person you'd want to share a room with on a footy trip?

RP:Joel Freeman

INSIDER: If you had to cook for the whole club what would be your signature dish of approval?

RP:Burritos

INSIDER: Who at the club would most likely win a million dollars on a quiz show?

RP:Isaac Nixon

INSIDER: Favorite AFL club and player?

RP:Collingwood, Oleg Markov - I’m trying to emulate my game on his.

INSIDER: If you could add one player to the Cobras list given your time spent in the Bendigo FNL, who would you pick?

RP:Lachie Tardew (Sandhurst midfielder)

INSIDER KNOWLEDGE - In his draft year Penny topped the field in the standing vertical jump and running vertical jump as well as the 20m sprint. Penny's 89cm on the standing vertical jump equaled the all-time combine record set by Aidan Bonar at the 2017 NAB AFL Draft combine.

TOM ZAMPATTI:Sam Walsh (Carlton), Tom McCartin (Sydney)

INSIDER: So why the move to Lakers?

TZ:I'm best mates with Angus Gove and Brayden Helyar - we went to Uni together.

INSIDER: How are you enjoying your time, glad you made the move?

TZ:I'm loving it, good vibe, developing young group. Good foundation for future on-field success

INSIDER: There was much speculation about your knee ahead of your first game in Lakers’ colours. What actually happened?

TZ:I did my ACL for a second time on Anzac day 2022. No luck at all!

INSIDER: You're now playing and going well, what were your first impressions of the BFNL?

TZ:Pretty good standard, grounds and facilities are better in the BFNL, similar levels in top-end talent. GFNL has more depth in playing lists (the bottom six).

INSIDER: Who wins GFNL or BFNL?

TZ:Tough question. Put it this way, I reckon Melton and Darley would play finals but not win it.

INSIDER: What are three non-negotiables we would expect you to write on the whiteboard?

TZ:Play your role, Consistency, Tempo

INSIDER: In a freakish sense, which player at the club can do things on-field that others can't?

TZ:Bailey Thompson

INSIDER: Who at the club has the most upside from a junior perspective?

TZ:Bailey Ryan

INSIDER: Who is the quickest at the club over 30m?

TZ: NOT Angus Gove!

INSIDER: Favorite ground to play on away from Lake Wendouree?

TZ:Eastern Oval

INSIDER: Who is your favorite footy person at the club?

TZ:Gav Maher

INSIDER: Who is the last person you would want to share a room with on a footy trip?

TZ:Bailey Thompson

INSIDER: If you had to cook for the whole club what would be your signature dish of approval?

TZ:Chicken Enchiladas

INSIDER: Who at the club would most likely win a million dollars on a quiz show?

TZ:Angus Gove

INSIDER: Favorite AFL club and player?

TZ:Richmond, Dustin Martin

INSIDER: Tip for the BFNL flag?

TZ:Darley

INSIDER: If you could add three players from other clubs to your list, who would you pick?

TZ:Brett Bewley (Darley), Jordy Johnston (East Point), Ryan Carter (Melton).

INSIDER: Congratulations on the journey so far, mate. Win/loss aside, it's been a tough year for the club. What has a spot in the grand final done for the morale of the Bloods’ family?

TROY SCOBLE: The challenges experienced galvanize and strengthen our connection. Provides genuine feedback to us all that we have a unique environment with genuine people.

INSIDER: Do you think the current playing group is undervalued or underappreciated more broadly given their impeccable win/loss record dating back as far as 2018?

TS: Absolutely. The numbers don’t lie on the group’s performance this home and away season. The acknowledgement or lack thereof is not our concern, seeking external acknowledgement has never been a goal.

INSIDER: If so, should the covid epidemic take some responsibility for us missing out on the Bloods’ full potential through 2020-21?

TS: Great question. The age profile of the group may suggest they lost some opportunities. However, there are other teams over the period that would have felt the same.

INSIDER: You're harder to play against in 2024 – what is the reason behind that? You could look at percentage, depth, maturity of talent, system, anything else?

TS: Combination of all but system, development and trust in the list is the reason. Talent has no influence.

INSIDER: Scoreboard aside, what's the one stat you'd like to win today?

TS: Pressure rating

INSIDER: What is your #1 non-negotiable asked of the players each week?

TS: Know your role, play your role.

INSIDER: Playing group aside, is there another battle going on on-field between coaches - are some harder to play against than others - do some work out your theories better than others where you need to adapt on the run?

TS: There is. Love the challenge. Some terrific coaches in the competition that challenge your coaches’ box, and you build your learning when you coach against them.

INSIDER: It must've been a proud moment seeing both of your boys Max and Chase play senior footy together... how was that reality for you?

TS: As a coach, love seeing players earn opportunities. As a parent, a thrill for our family. Also being a part of five sets of brothers playing in a game is a great memory for them.

INSIDER: Who is your harshest critic?

TS: My wife, Michelle!

INSIDER: Favorite BFNL ground away from MacPherson Park?

TS: Darley Park

INSIDER: What other sport could you coach at a high level if there were no footy?

TS: One trick wonder. None.

INSIDER: In a freakish sense, which player at the club can do things on-field that others can't?

TS: Lachie Phillips

INSIDER: Who at the club has the most upside from a junior perspective?

TS: Blood’s bank is full - too many to individualize!

INSIDER: Who is the most fundamentally skilled player at the club?

TS: Kyle Borg

INSIDER: Who is your favorite footy person at the club?

TS: All of the volunteers

INSIDER: Are you a footy head - how do you consume your footy each week?

TS: I love footy and the strategies that go with it. Watch a bit of AFL, have some good networks.

INSIDER: If you had to cook for the whole club what would be your signature dish of approval?

TS: Some form of meat on a spit.

INSIDER: Invite 5 people whoever you like to sit at the dinner table with you...

TS: My wife Michelle, Roger Federer, Luke Hodge, Tom Brady.

INSIDER: Who at the club would most likely win a million dollars on a quiz show?

TS: Jordy Kight

INSIDER: Who at the club thinks they're funnier than they really are?

TS: Can't answer without offending haha!

INSIDER: Name a player that has any unusual, weird superstitions ahead of game time...

TS: Couple of players (nameless) like to shower pregame!

INSIDER: Favorite AFL club and player?

TS: Hawthorn, Toby Greene

INSIDER: If you could add three players from other BFNL clubs to your list, who would you pick?

TS: Brett Bewley (Darley), Brady Wright (Darley), Riley Polkinghorne (North Ballarat) & Tony Lockyer (Sebastopol).

INSIDER: I said you could only have three! haha

Bacchus Marsh - Season Draw

Over the next two weeks, the BFNL Media's ‘Scoop’ will serve up an in-depth analysis on how your club has fared in the 2021 Season draw, starting today with Bacchus Marsh.

Bacchus Marsh

Draw rating points: 97
2021 draw ranking: #2

Play TWICE: Sunbury, Melton South, North Ballarat, Lake Wendouree, Darley, Redan

Travel WEST: FOUR times - Ballarat (Rd1), Redan (Rd5), North Ballarat (Rd7), Lake Wendouree (Rd16)

WEST 'highway travel' record (2018 & 2019 home and away seasons): Played 9 Won 2 Lost 7 @22% win rate

PROS:

  • FOUR 'HOME' games in a row Rd11 - Rd14 up against Sebastopol, Redan, Melton South, North Ballarat
  • Meet 2019 Grand Finalists East Point and Sebastopol just ONCE
  • Highway travel (west) just ONCE after Rd7 - Lake Wendouree (Rd16)
  • Meet only ONE of the 2019 Finalists in Ballarat (Redan Rd5)
  • Were set to face FIVE Top 6 teams twice in the 2020 draw, but now meet only THREE in 2021

CONS:

  • FOUR 'AWAY' games out of SIX rounds Rd5 - Rd10 up against Redan Rd5, North Ballarat Rd7, Sunbury Rd9, Melton Rd10.
  • No easier HOME game either side of the four AWAY rounds with East Point in Rd4 and 2019 Grand Finalists Sebastopol in Rd11

Comment:

The Cobras will be thrilled with their draw given the nightmare that was planned for them in 2020. Bacchus Marsh are not here to make up the numbers and consider themselves a legitimate top four chance with their new additions over the off season. The draw has absolutely improved their currency, but they're coming from a fair way back. Nonetheless, they'll be smiling at Cobra land.

Bacchus Marsh 2023 Season Preview

With preseason preparations well under way and Round 1 fast approaching, Scoop goes one-on-one with all 11 senior coaches ahead of the 2023 McDonalds BFNL season.

CLUB: Bacchus Marsh

COACH: Jason Williams (1st season)

2022 Home & Away Record: 8th (7-9, 84.93%)

Scoop: Well Jason, your first-year assignment as coach of the Cobras has been made tougher with a number of key players exiting over the off-season. What type of play can we expect from the new group under your tutelage?

Jason Williams: We're setting up to be a side that is hard to move the ball against with an emphasis on pressuring the ball carrier. Offence looms as an exciting prospect for us on the back of youth promotion and potential 'ins'.

S: Talented duo in tall Luke Goetz and small Jake McCreery are welcomed additions. What can you tell us about these two?

JW: Luke is a quality person with a big heart who thrives with interaction. He will be a highly valued and popular clubman. Jake's highlights reel suggests he's capable of anything. He takes pride in his performance and is very excited about wearing the Cobras jumper for the first time.

S: Is the club willing to concede this year a redevelopment phase without focus on win/loss or are you confident overcoming what many predict to be a challenging road ahead?

JW: No, I’m not willing to concede anything until the matter of facts are done. I don't deal in probability, rather certainty.

S: Are you familiar with the BFNL and what have been your first impressions of your new club?

JW: I live in Sunbury and was a junior at the club. I coached a lot of Sunday games last year and was able to see a number of their games. And given my history with the Calder Cannons I’m quite familiar with a few names. As for my first impressions of Bacchus Marsh? - See identified strengths!

S: What are 3 non-negotiables you'd have written on the white board for your players on match day to adhere to?

JW: Pride in the jumper, pride in yourself and show that you care.

S: What are some of the identified strengths of the club?

JW: Off-field infrastructure is in a good space with access to medicos, physios etc. I've been blown away by the quality of people at this club who just want to help and be a part of something they believe in. Also, our junior program is very strong with a number of players vying for NAB league selection.

S: Where do you expect to see your projected improvement come from?

JW: To facilitate a level of enjoyment, club unity and general wellbeing of the club.

S: How has pre-season training looked?

JW: Really good. The feedback has been positive and the buy-in great. The boys have welcomed the change and sensing a complete cultural shift around the place for the better.

S: Who do you expect to be the biggest improvers this year? (Outside of your club)

JW: Darley - Dan Jordan is a high-quality coach, I have enormous respect for him.

S: Who is your flag tip? (Outside of your club)

JW: Darley

KEY INS:

Luke Goetz (Bell Park), Jake Long (Collingwood VFL), Jake McCreery (Cove SA), Matt Smith-Bye (Ballan), Roy George (WA)

Ballarat - Season Draw

Up next in the 2021 club-by-club draw analysis is the season ahead for Ballarat. BFNL Media’s ‘Scoop’ will serve up an in-depth look at the pros and cons of the fixture for each club over the next two weeks.

Ballarat

Draw rating points: 109
2021 draw ranking: #10

Play TWICE: Darley, Lake Wendouree, Melton South, East Point, Sunbury, Sebastopol

Travel EAST: THREE times: Sunbury (Rd6), Melton South (Rd8), Darley (Rd12)

WEST 'highway travel' record (2018 & 2019 home and away seasons): Played 7 Won 1 Lost 6 @16% win rate

PROS:

  • Don't leave Ballarat until Round SIX (v. Sunbury)
  • At home FOUR of SEVEN games Rd4 to Rd11 and Rd10 to the bye, only AWAY against Sunbury Rd6 and Melton South Rd8

CONS:

  • Play FOUR of 2019 Finalists twice including Grand Final duo East Point and Sebastopol (as well as Darley and Sunbury)
  • Finish season with East Point (away), Sunbury (home), Sebastopol (away) - big ask

Comment:

Can't wait to see Josh Gibson in Ballarat colours, what a coup for the club and competition on the whole. However, the Swans draw on paper has done little to enhance their finals chances. I hope I’m wrong. Coach Joe Carmody is a ripper bloke and his positivity over the group, with the addition of Gibson, will stir upset results.

Ballarat FNC 2023 Season Preview

With preseason preparations well under way and Round 1 fast approaching, Scoops goes one-on-one with all 11 senior coaches ahead of the 2023 McDonalds BFNL season.

CLUB: Ballarat

COACH: Chris Maple (1st Season)

2022 Home & Away Record: 2nd (12-4 106.82%)

Scoop: Well Chris, firstly welcome to the BFNL coaching ranks. What were your first impressions of the Swans group?

Chris Maple: There has been a bit of a shift in the age profile. We'll be a lot younger this year. So far, I can tell you they're enthusiastic and eager to learn. Both very encouraging attributes to work with.

S: Is your role primarily to take the group another step beyond a preliminary final or is the focus more on development given some 13 players are expected up from the Under 19s this year?

CM: Well last year we had a much more experienced group and were able to win something in the vicinity of seven games by 10 points or less - all the close ones essentially. My role, given we have a significantly younger list, is to help set up the club, having the right roles in place for sustained future success.

S: Callan Wellings is a welcomed addition from Collingwood VFL. Tell us about him and what we can expect?

CM: He is a good ball user, has excellent leadership skills and is a quality person. Unfortunately for Callan he will miss the first month of the season due to a delayed surgery and travel commitments.

S: Bailey Van de Heuvel joins Geelong's VFL list but remains a Ballarat player. His presence will be a major boost for the group if/when available. What's your preferred position for Bailey given he can play a key role for you across any line?

CM: Defence. You want him where he plays his best footy.

S: You've lost a few impact players from last year, they're never easy to replace. What's a realistic ask for 2023? 12 wins was huge last year given Melton (14 in 2022) and East Point (13 in 2019) are the only other two sides to win 12 or more games in a season over the last 5 years.

CM: As I alluded to earlier, I’m not sure we win as many games last year without the older heads. It's all about getting more games into the younger players - that alone is an improvement wins and losses aside.

S: What are some of the identified strengths of the club?

CM: Quality youth, fit, skilled with healthy blend of experience.

S: Where do you expect to see your projected improvement come from?

CM: Getting more games into younger players.

S: How has pre-season training looked?

CM: The early signs have been encouraging. Enthusiastic bunch all eager to learn.

S: Who do you expect to be the biggest improvers this year? (Outside of your club)

CM: Sunbury or Darley.

S: Who is your flag tip? (Outside of your club)

CM: Melton and Sebastopol are the clear benchmarks.

KEY INS:

C. Wellings (Collingwood VFL), M. Bishop (returning).

KEY OUTS:

S. James (Perth), L. Dawson (Brisbane), A. Domic (Buninyong), J. Dunne (CHFL), J. Blackburn (Barwon Heads), A. McPherson, T. Sutton.

VFL AFFILIATED PLAYERS:

B. Van de Heuvel (Geelong), T. Maple (Footscray), A. Bade (Footscray)

Scoop's Ballarat prediction - 5th -7th
